      I personally think that 1 billion comes from labor savings. I think SGC got its hands on some impressive manufacturing technology that enabled 1 person to do the work of 100. In addition SGC developed its own supply chain thus greatly reducing the cost.

    Unfortunately, given when she was produced, the X-303 Prometheus was objectively the worst ship in the galaxy. But, that's to be expected. She was a test bed, a first foray into a new chapter of militarization that Earth had never done before, utilizing technologies the Tau'ri still only kinda understood. She's bad because she's old-tech mixed with new-tech mixed with alien-tech which is something the galaxy hasn't seen in eons.

    • @Alexander_Kale
      @Alexander_Kale 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I mean, if we are completely honest, even the 304s were absolutely useless before they got Asgard beams. Their dinky little railguns would not have so much as scratched the shields of a Ha'tak, and even naquadah enhanced warheads were ueseless against Goa'uld shields...
      They are MUCH smaller than a Ha'tak, which probably means smaller and less sophisticated power plant, They still rely on a reaction drive vs the Goa'uld drives which are reactionless, and Earth never managed to develop their own DEWs, nor equip their missiles with reactionless drives.

    • @brunoscarlatto4679
      @brunoscarlatto4679 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Alexander_Kale This is what happens when you let the Air Force design a ship and they build something extremely inefficient. that it was difficult for them to install a giant railgun at the front of the ship, at least that would be more useful than the small cannons that both classes had that seemed more anti-fighter than anything else. Or take the plans of the Iowa, modify them with all the new technology and that's it, that would have been ten times better than the Prometheus

    • @Alexander_Kale
      @Alexander_Kale 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@brunoscarlatto4679 Meanwhile, if you were to hire Navy guys to design what is only a ship in name, they would probably do some other stupid things.
      Though I doubt that any weapon earth had available to them would have been man enough to damage a goa'uld ship. They would have needed to steal some Ha'tak guns and even then, Prometheus being so much smaller means they would not have had the power to actually do something. A Tollan Energy cannon would have worked, but where to get one. ^.^
      Prometheus as a strike carrier to enact some sort of MAD analogue works as an idea. Put a dozen hyperspace capable smaller ships on it, park it somewhere and fill it with nuclear bombs. then make it clear to any Goa'uld with ambition that you will glass their homeworlds should they ever attack earth.

      @brunoscarlatto4679 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Alexander_Kale I know it was not comparable on a technological level, but the lack of standard weapons of a certain power hurt the Prometheus too much. Seriously, it was the only ship that humanity would have at its disposal for at least a few years. Couldn't they have designed something better?
      Not only was it too small for humanity's needs, but it was very lightly armed and defended, which they thought they were going to do with inferior goa'uld shields and such equipment.
      seriously and they say it cost only one billion, it's the cost of a navy destroyer.
      I understand that it was a prototype, but if the survival of humanity depends on that prototype, you create something exaggerated and then adjust it to a standard class.

      @Alexander_Kale 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@brunoscarlatto4679 the answer to "could they not have.." really is a clear and undisputable "no, they really could not". They had no idea what they were doing, they barely had the technology or the resources to get Prometheus working as is and they didn't have anything better in terms of weapons than Railguns.
      Building a bigger ship would not have achieved much of anything either, because again, they had nothing to arm it with.
      When your enemy has a point defense / armor system that can shrug off thermonuclear nukes by the dozen, meanwhile all you have is railguns, then you are somewhat shit out of options.

    Contrasting Prometheus to its successor class, what immediately sticks out is that the daedalus and its sister ships look a lot more functional, whereas the Prometheus hullshape is comprised of pointless fluff.

    • @ReddwarfIV
      @ReddwarfIV 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The engine placement also makes it look incredibly ungainly. Two giant thrusters at the bottom of a really tall tower makes it obvious the centre of thrust doesn't go through the centre of mass.

      I always assumed it looked so janky because it was a half finished alkesh when they turned it into the Prometheus. Sort of just had to bolt on whatever else they needed where ever it would fit. Where as the BC-304s were built from the ground up by humans resulting in a much less messy design.

      @commandoepsilon4664 It had an Al'Kesh hyperdrive, but only after they ejected the original human-built Naquadria powered one.

      Prometheus hull is not based on any alien spaceship, it is one hundred percent a human design, though with a lot of extra stuff tacked on later.

    Up until the Asgard beam weapons were installed on Odyssey the Tauri ships really werent worth much against anythibg bigger than an Alkesh. @@josephryman3799 Yeah they do. They're already integrated into the design and cheap to produce and install compared to changing the designs to remove them. Their power requirements are negligible next to beam weapons, hyperdrive, and shields. They're useful as CIWS and anti-fighter weapons, and are still effective against Alkesh and wraith cruisers. And they're a better-than-nothibg backup to beam weapons if they go down. There's no point in not having them.

    • @magikclaw7458
      @magikclaw7458 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is untrue. The rail guns were very effective against hive ships one on one, but only putting the daedalus on equal footing (due to the shields). There's an episode where the daedalus slugs it out with a hive ship, and both ships end up disabled. The rail guns were also seen as being effective against multiple hatak vessels (usually 3 at a time). They were shown taking damage. They're nowhere near as effective as the beam weapons, and even hatak weapons are more powerful. However, the rail guns are significantly more accurate than the staff cannons of the hataks, and they do damage.
      That being said, the prometheus design could have gotten scaled down to serve a corvette role. Could be made significantly cheaper that way. Have a single ventral hangar bay for 4 fighters, and remove the command tower for a bridge design similar to the daedalus. Consistently Pair 2 as support craft to a daedalus class ship. You would have 24 f302s that way. The daedalus class could serve as a frigate to support future capital ships, as well as the roles it already takes.

    • @d.s.151

      @@magikclaw7458 in the episode you refer to, both ships only end up disabled because the Daedalus opens up on the dart bags as they launch causing secondary explosions which damage the hive, plus plot. If the Daedalus were firing at the hives hull it would do bugger all.
      Regarding a corvette model, why have a hanger bay at all? Corvettes aren't fighter carriers. At best have a hangar / cargo with space for a tel'tak for tactical use / crew escape ship.

      @@d.s.151 Wasn't that also the episode where Caldwell ordered all of his nukes to be fired simultaneously? And if not for Darts that were released to hunt Shephard down after he flew his F-302 and disabled their hyperdive, the hive would've been utterly obliterated. Out of that barrage they fired, only like two nukes got through and by Michael's admission, hive was heavily damaged.
      What i do not understand though is that Daedalus was literally using the precisely same type of nukes that was sent to Abydos during the absolutely first mission through Stargate... The very same type of nuke that killed Ra 10 years before Daedalus was created and before Earth had access to Naquadah, not to mention Naquadria.
      Were they trying to clean up military stockpiles or what? Because there is literally no reason, why they should have used same warhead as they used before SGC as organization was even conceived. It seemed like they focused on enhancing everything but their missiles... Those remained stuck in 80s/90s, while rest of Earth tech was catapulted millennia.

    I always felt that going from the tiny X-302 to the massive X-303 was a huge step -- and the X-303 feeling a bit rough around the edges to the extent that it doesn't even have a reliable hyperdrive still felt very much in line with the overall story. Also, at the time we've been looking at season 6 of the only Stargate show, so there was no immediate need to move the storytelling into space -- which also meant the progression from 303 to 304 felt quite natural -- they kept a lot of the 303 design, but the 304 was clearly a massively overhauled "next generation" vessel.

    It was a prototype and proof of concept; everything was basically bolted on as it became developed/acquired.
    In contrast, the Daedalus and its following ships in the same class were built with these technologies from the ground up, lessons learned in mind, with later models having yet more tech installed as they were built.
    As a parallel, the NX Enterprise from, well, Enterprise also went through the same thing; the Columbia and others that came after her had all the stuff Enterprise had tested built in as they were constructed; same with new tech developed on Earth. Although Enterprise was the flagship of United Earth, it was actually less advanced than the Columbia and others in its own class in just a few years.

      Aye. For context, look at Earths development of the Glider. They started with slapping a USAF sticker on a captured one, and when that didn't work they built one from the ground up. Prometheus is an extension of that fundamental understanding that they had to build their own ships if they wanted the security of operating them without a nasty surprise waiting to rear up.
      The human race had never built a spaceship before. Prometheus was it's first effort of slapping everything together to see if they could make it work. It was in essence a test bed prototype that became 'The best they had' at the time of war and would have been tested in every metric they could think of to build a better ship that was more in line with how the SGC wanted to fight their battles. And it worked. They moved to the 'shell' design instead of the 'tower block' design.

    A civilization's very first starship capable to traveling to another planet and was using damaged and salvaged alien tech isn't holding up to par to already developed ships in the series!!!
    Wwwwaaaahhhh???
    Yea, its kinda to be expected. It was a prototype, if i remember they stated in the show that they already knew it would not hold up to a mothership. It was closer to the role of a screen than a frontline warship.
    That said i loved the design. One of my favorite ships i scifi.

    I don't think this is the worst ship of the franchise, ok it look really weird, but it was a prototype ship from the start, and a prototype usually doesn't looks great, or doesn't work as intended, or sometimes both of them, and the X-303 Prometheus is the perfect example of what a prototype is, it's not good at first but it got many upgrades before the finale product, the BC-304 Daedalus class Battlecruiser design.

  • @kailahmann1823

    it was as bad or good, as it would realistically be: It was full of experimental tech and centuries ahead of the "normal" human development speed. As Selmak commented on the X-301: You can't just put an Air Force sticker on an alien ship…

    It was a prototype using new tech in a new field humans are only starting on built in secret by a government that pinches pennies. It's surprising it worked at all.
    That said, the Prometheus was a good ship for what it was. It did it's job. And it was an important stepping stone to the Daedalus class.

    It's the worst Tau'ri (Earth human) ship sure, but the X-301 was a Goauld Deathglider with USAF weapons hardpoints, comms equipment and cockpit and the X-302 was a human derived design or copy of the X-301 of entirely human designed components. Both the 301 and 302 never had properly working hyperdrives, with the production series F-302 only capable of very short intrasystem jumps and those ships were just fighter/interceptors.
    The Tau'ri never managed to get a hyperdrive of their own design to work, and previously they only ever had working hyperdrive tech on ships of Goauld design until the tech was gifted to them by their Asgard allies. The Tau'ri are basically the same as us in the real world in terms of technological advancement so the fact that they managed to cobble together a ship capable of SSTO, hovering, in-atmosphere flight and almost capable of FTL flight (prior to being gifted Asgard hyperdrives) is amazing. It's like going straight into trying to make your own Concorde after the Wright Brothers proved powered flight was possible and settling for a Boeing 707.
    The BC-304 is pretty much half-Asgard as much as it is Tau'ri. The hyperdrives, shields, transporters and related sensors, and later the weapons are all Asgardian in design and origin. And the BC-304 class was designed to incorporate alien designed components from the get go rather than them being grafted on and jerry rigged to work.

    Best looking ship in the series by far, second only to the Aurora class. Also Prometheus size definitely wasn't 195 meters, because it would be impossible for several 14 meter F302's to fit in any part of it. The true size is atleast 516 meters long. Nothing bad about the ship itself - it was literally the main Earth ship during most of SG1. It would've been cool if they had it also be the main ship that goes to Pegasus and back, but the writers wanted to get rid of it idk why?

  • @watcherzero5256
    @watcherzero5256 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I am stretching my memory, but the Prometheus never defeated a Pyramid ship in a conventional battle did it? It would usually just provide a distraction or covering fire. It had pretty good fighter defences but very weak anti-ship firepower.

    • @meganoobbg3387
      @meganoobbg3387 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Neither did the X304, i think only the Daedalus defeated a wraith hive once, without asgard beam weapons. Although i do remember in Season 7 when Anubis sent 3 motherships, a general told the president: "Prometheus and our fleet of 302's will give im a run for their money.", and even general Hammond agreed - implying that Prometheus could actually take on Ha'tak ships if it needed to. I guess 304's could do the same, just didn't happen.

    Prometheus was only lost because SGC as all the "good" people in Movies is always stupid as fuck. They fired on the Satelite first without scanning for Data first or an option to negotiate... basicly starting a war with the nation controling it since... Prometheus fired first! But then after the return fire just stayed there an die... they should have armed the nukes and just obliterate the capital city of the enamy including the controll center for the weapon! They already started all out war by firing on the satelite so just getting destroyed while doing nothing was stupid! After all it was war with the Ori anyway and the entire Galaxy was at risk.

      Was so dumb the way they left it be destroyed - it's like the authors of the show just wanted to get rid of the ship quickly. Didn't even care about making a good story about it - they also didn't realistically portray how the US military would react to losing a capital ship. I mean it's like they literally forgot about those people with the Ori satelite - that would be like the US IRL not going for revenge after 9/11, but saying "let's forget about it" :D
