Super agree, I LOVE my Steam Deck so much! I also got the non-OLED model (but I was lucky to get it right after the OLED was announced, so I got a nice discount). For some reason, for the first couple of weeks, I had some hand cramps playing it, but after that, it's like I adjusted, and now it's the most comfortable handheld I've ever used.

It’s also worth looking up any games you are playing on a site like steam deck HQ to see if there are setting optimizations. Being able to control the frame rate , and TDP, along with a host of other options, from a simple menu is great for getting the games to run their smoothest, extend the battery and quite the fans for some of the more intensive games. Just dropping the frames from 60 to 50 or 40 makes a huge difference in a lot of games for temps and smooth gameplay without sacrificing much visually since it’s a small screen

You might be able to improve battery life a significant amount by limiting your frame rate in the power settings. This is of course only if you don't mind playing at, for example, 40 fps (or even 30 fps) rather than 60 fps. There is always a trade off regarding power usage. I found that limiting my frame rate to 40 fps improved battery life, made the system run cooler, and (on a related note) reduced fan noise. I would think for most cozy games a lower frame rate would be acceptable. I still use a reduced frame rate on my OLED model after passing my original to my brother.

I have to second this sentiment. Especially for first time buyers, you should absolutely save up the little bit extra for the oled model. The screen alone is worth it, add in that it’s lighter, quieter, cooler with significantly better battery life and it’s a no brainer.

It's worth it. To any new Steam Deck owner or beginner PC gamer, i would always recommend watching some beginner guide like videos. The PC platform is freedom, there are very few to no arbitrary limitations put on the platform. You can basically do anything you want, but with this sort of power there typically comes a bit of tweaking to get the most out of it.

This is exactly me. I'm a handheld gamer for life. For some reason I just straight up hate using keyboard controls and don't enjoy playing with a controller on the tv all that much either 🤷‍♀️ but that has really limited the amount of games I've been able to play over the years. I used to play with my mom's Gameboy color, I had a Nintendo DS that I loved, for awhile I was really only playing some mobile games but I wanted something more, then in recent years I got the switch lite since I had no interest in playing on the tv anyway but the steamdeck is the gaming device I've been dreaming of my whole life even if I didn't know it 😂🙏 I'm saving up for sure.

I got my SteamDeck a year ago followed by the ROG Ally. If I wasn't scared of upgrading the internal storage, I would of gotten the 64 GB Storage version. I went with the 512 GB LCD model. The SteamDeck has improved so vastly with Proton. I also love tinkering with TDP controls to get the most out of my battery. Then this year, I upgraded the internal storage into a 1TB. Now I am conflicted if I want to get the Lenovo Legion Go or the SteamDeck OLED.

I have a dongle that has HDMI, USB, and USB-C ports so I can connect to a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and still power it. I can use it to connect to a TV, use it to play like a PC game, and use it as a PC (highly wouldn't recommend).

You should look into adjusting the built-in power settings on your Steam Deck. You can limit the amount of power the SD will give to a game to increase battery life. For indie games like Stardew Valley it can increase the battery life a ton. The only trade off is for more demanding games it might limit the FPS you get.
There is a beginners guide on how to adjust that here: th-cam.com/video/g6cd6I2hDKo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=6WDcwvxrMHKFTzwi

@@mintendogaming The answer to whether it would be the same on the Steam Deck OLED is sort of both yes and no. The Steam Deck OLED is similarly resistant to "burn in" as the Switch OLED, but because of the HDR feature, it can go much brighter when in HDR mode. This makes it a bit more susceptible to "burn in" of pixels that are more than normal brightness. However, in either case, it's not really a big concern for typical gaming usage patterns. You can see more about it in the latest video on TH-cam from The Phawx, but he does tend to go into quite a bit of technical detail.

I regret buying the steam deck. Should have came with more storage originally, build quality is horrendous and feels super cheap, although more and more games are supported a lot of the deck verified games should not be with how horrible they run or lots of games outright publicly refuse to support the deck due to not wanting to support linux and will ban you or EAC support not existing.
