all of the above songs are so amazing and well worth listening to and reacting, if you chose “enjoy the silence” please chose the LIVE performance from Berlin in 2015.
You’ve no idea how much of a curve ball this was to Depeche Mode fans when it came out. The lead single from their number one (on both sides of the Atlantic) album Songs Of Faith And Devotion. It sounded like nothing they’d ever done before. Bigger and louder, and of course Dave Gahan with long hair. The whole thing was electrifying. Compare this with the smooth electronic subtlety of the previous album, Violator. Everything that had gone into the making of this album, and everything that went into the massive world tour that followed, blew the band apart only for them to come back to life as a three piece and continue to this day (with the tragic passing of Andy Fletcher this year).
Yeah it was an initial "wut?" when I got the 7" single, the two 12" and two CD-singles at home. It's a great song though and the remixes delivered (as usual). :)
Depeche Mode was my bread and butter band growing up. Love them! They have so many different sounds. This was their grunge album and one of the very few albums that I prefer the live version to the studio one. Some other great songs (there are so many) to try: "Enjoy the Silence", "Policy of Truth", "People are People" (old school). Another from this album you may feel is even more badass than this song would be "Rush", but listen to the live version. The opening drums will blow you away! (Or even "Barrel of a gun" on their Ultra album would blow you away too. These guys have a lot of hits and many hidden gems!). Cheers!
Depeche mode are the single biggest synth pop/rock band from the UK ever to break into the USA, they are phenomenal as recording artists and live band! love their work!
Man this takes me back. Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails got me through high school Yeah I realize I’ve just aged myself, but it’s all good 😜 The lead singer David Gahan is very captivating on stage. You’re right he definitely has a swag of his own. I think you would really like Walking in my Shoes. Other songs to check out: Policy of Truth, Enjoy the Silence, World in my Eyes, Never let me Down Again
I Feel You was the first track on the Songs Of Faith And Devotion album, which was significantly different than anything DM had previously delivered. It still remains one of my favourite DM songs. You have to give the track Higher Love a listen to, which is what DM opened the Devotional Tour concerts with back in 1993.
This is a very interesting choice for a first time listen to this band. They are mainly recognized as a synth band. Between 1981 and 1990 they released singles like Just can't get enough (1981), People are people (1984), Strangelove (1987) or Enjoy the silence and Personal Jesus (1990) to name a few. Let's not forget my all time favourite - Policy of truth (1990). This one came in like a wrecking ball to most of the fans. Both their look and the sound were very 180 degrees to what we were used to for more than 10 years.
Tom Green. That was funny! They started as one of the first electronic (synthesizer) based bands, including the drums. Guitar was introduced, and a drummer over time. "Never Let Me Down Again," "Enjoy the Silence," or "It's No Good," are good songs.
Their music is used a lot more in Europe than the US. Another good one that can get overlooked is In Your Room. They have amazing hits all over their catalog! You can find something that just calls to you on nearly every album! And you’d be surprised the people who have said that Depeche Mode influenced their careers! I just love them!
In Your Room (album version), Never Let Me Down Again (101 Live), Black Celebration and Behind The Wheel are some of the many many songs they've released. Glad to see more reactions of Depeche Mode!
One of the most versatile bands of my life. Check out Freelove (video version). You’ll be blown away by the versatility but staying close to their style of music.
If you grew up listening to vinyl, the sound in the beginning of the song is known to you. It’s a needle being slowly ripped across a a 7 or 12 inch record. “Back in my day” it was known as an attention getter. It was a “mic drop” before there were mic drops. (So you understand why it was there). Also, with this album, the band was saying all that 7 inch (record size) dance shit is over (they were considered a “new wave” dance band). This record rip at the beginning was essentially a “welcome to the new Depeche Mode” moment.
I just love your genuine reaction! I especially like that you instinctivly recognized the swagger of the leadsinger Dave Gahan - he makes Depeche Mode just so cool and intense!
🔥 they had so many faces in each album. See violator - songs of faith ( in your room devotional live is a masterpiece btw) then playing the angel that nasty distortion synthetic sound . Absolute pioneers, and their live performances was the best I ever seen. Just as in audio technique as well presentation
They've been around for yonks. Listen to "Enjoy the silence" you might have heard samples from "Just can't get enough" or covers of " Personal Jesus"...💕👌
I became fan of the band when I heard this song for the very first time 30 years ago or so. Good to see enthusiastic reaction decades after the release of this single. :)
Saw them at Dodgers stadium with Nitzer Ebb opening, great show. Dave is a really good singer and front man. So many years of songs - they just keep putting out HEAT - My latest addiction with them is a song from 2017 called No More - also they have a ton of REMIXED stuff out there and it's goooooood
This lead singer was going through a lot of turmoil at this time in his life. He's actually trying to be different than his true self. He was trying to fit into the 1990s grunge scene. He got mixed up with a dangerous woman, started shooting heroin, and almost died before he went to rehab.
I grew up a few miles away from these guys, who hailed from Canvey Island and Basildon area of Essex. The blonde actress in the video famously played the Princess in the 1983 movie Krull. Lysette Anthony... en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lysette_Anthony
You’re right, Depeche Mode IS bad ass! Check out “enjoy the silence”, “precious”, “ behind the wheel”, “strange love”, “blasphemous rumors”… So many more!
First time I heard DM was in the mid 80's on a school bus Was cool as hell, but never thought about them until 5 years later when Arsenio Hall gave them time on his show in 1990 to do Policy of Truth Was the moment I became a fan
If black belts were handed out to producers/writers, Depeche would be 8th Degree Grand Masters. They can make songs like this that are heavily layered without any of the layers conflicting with others. They can also make more simplistic songs like "Waiting for the Night to Fall" or "Only When I Lose Myself" but not compromise any of the gravity of the song.
Depeche mode were around since early 80's maybe late 70's, but have many great songs. A few you might wanna check out would be; Mercy in You, Behind the Wheel, In Your Room, Enjoy the Silence, and Personal Jesus. There's a bunch more, but that's the few I probably listened to the most.
This song was definitely a departure from them (though their sound constantly evolved/still does), so it was an interesting first choice. I loved your observation that you thought it was strange you hadn't heard this song before, since that's pretty much the strange paradox of Depeche Mode -- underappreciated, underrated, yet they have and continue to sell out stadiums worldwide an were inducted to the R&R Hall of Fame two years ago. And swag is the word for Dave Gahan. Can't wait to see what you check out next. I would love to see Behind the Wheel, Stripped, or In Your Room, though everyone seems to start with Enjoy the Silence or People are People (with good reason).
Man, this is a rabbit hole you just got get on ASAP. They are hugely influential and important to how popular music developed in the 80s and early 90s. And, there are so many great, iconic songs from them. They brought the darker hues, the salt, to an otherwise largely pastel coloured, sugar-saturated decade. By the early 90s, Dave Gahan, the vocalist, had moved to LA and befriended the local alternative rock scene - which explains his growing out his hair and his new extra-everything swag. Sadly this album, 1992’s Songs Of Faith And Devotion, would be the last with musical genius Alan Wilder in the band, (drumming in this video). But what an album to go out on - a high point of the 90s for sure. And it marks their artistic and commercial peak. But by then they had a whole decade worth of iconic, groundbreaking and highly influential albums under their belt. The video was - as always - directed by legendary photographer Anton Corbijn, who has shot practically everyone, and even directed a couple of movies. But he is particularly associated with Depeche Mode, as he changed their whole visual style from an early point in their career. ”He made us look cool”, as Dave likes to say. There are too many songs to choose from, but if you want to dip further into this album you have In Your Room, Walking In My Shoes, Condemnation. Next up should be the immediate predecessor to this album, and widely considered their perfect one: Violator (1990). Perhaps start with Personal Jesus, the first single, and go from there. After that, you’re on your own. But expect to stay in this rabbit hole for a while.
Depeche Mode are a super huge band from England. There peak was probably 87-97 . The song Personal Jesus and Enjoy The Silence are the songs that made it the highest on the USA billboards. People Are People is the song that broke DM into mainstream superstardom. When DM tours they still after 40 years a filling stadiums. DM are probably the biggest electronic band ever
It's weird that you have reacted to their most rockin song and my favourite. My suggestion to get the same energy but not rockin is - behind the wheel . After Alan left the band a dark mysterious energy left DM as well.
You jumped into DM at an interesting stage... this was a huge album in 1993, but it was so vastly different than anything they'd ever done before (yet still has the trademark DM sound in some odd way). They formed in 1980 and continue to this day. You should either go all the way to the beginning (1981 - Just Can't Get Enough) or, as most reactors do, keep hitting the peak years 1987-1993 and do Strangelove, Personal Jesus, Enjoy the Silence, Policy of Truth, Walking In My Shoes.
Man, the glasses were "necessary". Dave Gaham, the lead singer was immerse in a world of drugs since mid eighties and this song is from 92 (I think so). He kept on with drugs a few years more wich led him to see Miss Death's eyes very close for a couple of times. He's absolutely clean since then. Martin's (the blond one) problems were around alcohol, but he is doing fine now too. Salud hermano!
* More. Beautiful songs by DM: Home Waiting For The Night The Things You Said See You (from their second album, after Vince Clarke leaved) Somebody (piano and Martin's voice with a night industrial city landscape behind) Stripped * More Hymns & Epic: Never Let Me Down Again Master & Servant World In My Eyes It's No Good Enjoy The Silence
Lol. Dude, you have no idea when you say Dave would be easy to parody on SNL. His dancing during live performances is so gleefully dorky. Absolutely love this band, btw. My all time favorite. Nice choice.
Thanks for listening to one of the not as popular songs as it rings true. Beautiful lyrics and music but not as known as it should be. I so love your channel and all you bring. Again, so happy I subscribed.

Love this group. Listen to Enjoy The Silence, Policy Of Truth, Personal Jesus, Never Let Me Down Again, Useless..I really could go on and on.
'Never let me down again' epic song!!
all of the above songs are so amazing and well worth listening to and reacting, if you chose “enjoy the silence” please chose the LIVE performance from Berlin in 2015.
I BET I GOT STUFF THAT WILL WOW YOU.
1985-1994 Golden Alan Wilder Era.
In Your Room
Depeche Mode is the Ultimate band 💫❤️☝️ thanks for the reaction bro 💫☝️❤️

So true
the leave behind the synthpop of the 80's and we become devotees
Depeche Mode is one of the best artists in the world. So excited to watch your Depeche Mode journey. Wonderful reaction.

I doubt it. Parody on SNL
Depeche mode are the single biggest synth pop/rock band from the UK ever to break into the USA, they are phenomenal as recording artists and live band! love their work!
Depeche Mode is amazing live.
I saw this tour at 18 years old and still remember how the sound felt through my body.
Live in Paris concert amazing.
I go way back to Speak and Spell and Broken Frame. After 40 years plus, I'm still a huge fan.
R.i.p Andrew Fletcher 😔❤️
Man this takes me back. Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails got me through high school Yeah I realize I’ve just aged myself, but it’s all good 😜

Other songs to check out: Policy of Truth, Enjoy the Silence, World in my Eyes, Never let me Down Again
I love love love Depeche Mode. Enjoy the Silence is classic.
The screech at the start was to get back at radio DJs who talked over the beginning of songs
DEPECHE MODE are my all time favorite band, They are worth investing time on.
"Enjoy the Silence, live in Berlin", or "Never Let Me Down Again, live in Berlin". Absolutely majestic. Godspeed, sir.
I Feel You was the first track on the Songs Of Faith And Devotion album, which was significantly different than anything DM had previously delivered. It still remains one of my favourite DM songs. ‘In Your Room’ is a shout. Not the remix though.
@@badhairday_247 I love the version they did on the last tour with the show visuals. It was amazing
This band! Iconic 80’s/90’s!!!!
Listen to the song "wrong". The lyrics hit me so bad when I was kicking my heroine habit 9yrs ago. Loved this band since I was a teenager 💗
If you grew up listening to vinyl, the sound in the beginning of the song is known to you. It’s a needle being slowly ripped across a a 7 or 12 inch record.

This was the first CD I ever bought. I kept thinking that scratchy intro was me doing something wrong.
Love Depeche Mode - synth, pop meets rock - pioneers and amazing live

So many years of songs - they just keep putting out HEAT - My latest addiction with them is a song from 2017 called No More - also they have a ton of REMIXED stuff out there and it's goooooood
It is a brutal futuristic gospel. Just that!
EVERYTHING Depeche Mode did changed music! Plus, just so great for dancing and thinking and making love...
This lead singer was going through a lot of turmoil at this time in his life. He's actually trying to be different than his true self. He was trying to fit into the 1990s grunge scene. He got mixed up with a dangerous woman, started shooting heroin, and almost died before he went to rehab.

If you continually decide...
To faithfully pursue...
Your POLICY OF TRUTH!"
THAT...just happened!
This Track Comes With An Important Message...Depeche Mode "People Are People"
First time I heard DM was in the mid 80's on a school bus
Was cool as hell, but never thought about them until 5 years later when Arsenio Hall gave them time on his show in 1990 to do Policy of Truth
Was the moment I became a fan
Great choice. Great song.
I remember hearing this live in 2013 and the feeling of it reverberating in my whole body.
best band ever, they also have great music videos

My first concert! 1986. Depeche still holds up!
Used so well in the series Sense8 ❤
Enjoy The Silence by them is a CLASSIC
Saw this played live at Crystal palace, london in 1993 ...I think!? My memory isn't what it was😂 best gig ever!!
Depeche Mode's song Personal Jesus has to be the best. Please check it out.
THANK YOU for finding DM!!! Their 101 Live was the first album I bought with my own money. Bloody classic band and VERY underrated.
Glad you got onto and enjoyed this Depeche Mode song!

You can start from their debut album aand moving forth. Just to discover the development they have gone through over their 40+ years
