This is classic Martin - sad song wrapped in a happier package. He rarely comments on the meaning of his songs, but he has said Home is about death. Frontman Dave's heroin addiction naturally gets the headlines, but Martin struggled for 20+ years with alcoholism. The line "Feels like home, I should have known from my first breath" always grabs me. I take this as a reflection on him saying he's never felt secure, even from the time he was born, and death brings that missing feeling. Very sad. I think you should move to "Barrel of a Gun" (also from 1997) next. Many people thought this was Martin writing "for" Dave, and about his problems... but as Martin said "I have my problems too!"
Absolutely incorrect. Home is about him finding his real father. Martin is part black. His father was an American and in the military stationed within the UK. His Mom finally told him that the step father he thought was his real father wasn't. Couldn't imagine having to deal and cope with something so personal and life altering.
Pretty sure the song is about Martin's addiction to alcohol, and his struggle with that. The verse about bed sheets sticking to him sounds a lot like drug or alcohol withdrawal. Would love to see you react to In Your Room. I think it's peak Depeche Mode. The best thing they ever made
Wow, thank you for reviewing this beautiful song. One of DM’s best songs and another superb lead vocal from Martin. This is from the band’s first post Alan Wilder album. Perhaps that accounts for the departure in sound? It is still a wonderful record (“Ultra” - 1997).
"Home" reminds me on a situation, where i found a little very sick stray-cat-baby at the stables. I brought it to my vetenerian, but the only thing he could do for it was give it the final shot. While i was driving back to the stables with that little dead body beside me to bury it there where the short life began, "home" was played at the radio-station..... I was hit so badly ... had to stop and cry heavily. I brought it home....
With Depeche Mode, I think you'll find that every album has it's own unique and very distinct sound. They're an innovative band who are never afraid to experiment and yet still sound very "Depeche".
True. The were one of the few 80s bands to transition to the 90s because they were willing to explore and experiment. They ended up sounding nothing like how they started out
Martin Gore just nails this, live too. I remember being really moved by this when it came out and it marked the first time I realized I was a complete sucker for strings on a rock song. "Ultra" is my favorite DM album, it's wonderfully different. I was one of the people who recommended this song to you and I'm glad you checked it out!
This is the SHORTENED/RADIO EDIT. The album version is WAY BETTER, and didn't cut much of that beautiful music stuff. It's from "Ultra" (1997), them first album after the Alan Wilder's departure which affected the band in SO MANY WAYS (Dave was affected THE MOST by this fact). Most of the fans and the band's personnel were VERY AFRAID if the album WELL EVER BE DONE, cause Dave has suffered from DRUGS (he even died for 2 minutes because of them), and the rest of the guys also suffered from different stuff (Martin from the ALCOHOL, and Andrew - from DEPRESSION). But they still make more music. And so, in that way ULTRA has saved the band.
Yes ultra was such an important album... And underrated... every track on this album was good, some beyond great (like this one) and most people weren't expecting much given Dave's near death and Alan's departure. Home is one of my favorite songs not just of DM'S, but of all time. You're right, this shortened version doesn't do it justice
Some of their other really great singles (If you haven’t already check them out)are: -The Things You Said -Walking In My Shoes -One Caress -Enjoy The Silence -A Question Of Lust
My favourite song of their entire career and there’s so many amazing ones to choose. This one being sung by Martin gives you the difference in his vocal approach to Dave’s. The only reason I would have suggested the album version is because it goes on longer with an extended ending :-)
I'd really like to see a reaction to Halo, one of the more obscure DM songs. Very surprised you haven't done Strangelove, which is an absolute classic DM track. Behind the Wheel and Blasphemous Rumors are other DM gems.
I love your reviews of Depeche Mode. Please keep them coming. They have a huge catalog to choose from. I have been a fan since 1982. I would love to see you review more of their songs. Best Band ever IMO.
Just subscribed! Your reactions are so genuine! Love seeing them! I am a longtime Depeche Mode fan … they have an awesome & wide-ranging catalog! There is a haunting & hypnotic quality to Martin’s vocals … try “One Caress” … it’s a departure but I think you’ll enjoy it ! Let us know! D.
Great reaction! I remember when this video came out (The internet was not common) i was to young to understand how awesome Depeche Mode were but, the video itself caused all sorts of rumors between drug abuse one of the VJ on MTV danced around Dave Gahan looking so sickly (as though he had HIV) Home as a song is very deep but, heartbreaking Ultra as a album is a bit divisive but, it’s also really good but, very dark and sad! I think it deserves more attention as a time capsule of the 90’s that should be taken in as a complete album! It’s one of those albums of the 90’s that has gotten lost in the shuffle but, you can listen to it now and take so much from it (It’s truly timeless) 👍✌️
Greetings from Germany ... I've been a Depeche Mode fan for 35 years. I've seen quite a few reaction videos from Depeche Mode on TH-cam. But I have to tell you. You're one of the few who hit the real core. Recognize the lyrics and compositions ... Thanks for that 🥰🥰🥰
Thank you very much for your reaction bruh. Love that song and the mood and Martins voice. There is another song which is also a bit dark but beautiful - also sung by him - called 'One Caress'. 😌 Hopefully you will hear that someday aswell. "I'm shying from the light, I always loved the night and now you offer me eternal darkness". 😉
I love “One Caress” and would encourage PMD to check that one out - along with “A Question of Lust”, “Shake the Disease”, Walking In My Shoes”... 😁😆. Don’t want to be a pest, but you could really pick any of their songs to review and we’d love it!
💞💞💞 thank you 💞💞💞 watching you react to this made me happy (as it was also one of my requests) and sad because it's one of the most beautiful songs ever and you nailed it again. DM's best songs are best listened to alone, eyes shut. Martin has the voice of an angel, is a true poet and is the soul of this band. I can't wait for you to see a live performance of this because it's even better to watch Martin belt this out on stage (live in Paris being my personal fave). Thank you again.
Ultra album came to life after band almost fell apart (during Devotional Tour). They came back after Dave's struggle with drugs, Martin's fight with alcohol addiction, Andy's depression.Alan left the band that time. You can heard that album is much more mellow.
What a great song. I saw them play this live in Chicago after this album came out. They were able to get a string quartet to play the orchestration, like on the track, instead of using synths. It was fantastic!!!
I'd like to think that the album Ultra really paved the way for that dark, grungy electronica but laced with sensuality and softness in the mid to late 90s. It was released in 1997 to critical acclaim and I always felt like the spiritual brother of Ultra was Massive Attack's Mezzanine released a year later.
I remember when Depeche Mode did first live concert ever in Kyiv (Ukraine) in 2009 (i think) i was there and whole arena was singing this song and then was shouting "Marty, Marty, Mart" for like several minutes, and he had such happy face☺️ one of the best memories of mine ☺️
I am DM's biggest fan ( so I know a thing or two about them) ....here is a small list of what to listen from them on here ( even though you should listen to every album they have ) ....Photographic ( live in Hamburg 1984) , Get the balance right, Everything counts, Blasphemous rumors, Shake the disease, Stripped, Black celebration, A question of lust, A question of time, Behind the wheel, The things you said, Little 15 ......all these are before 1990's Violator and I'll stop here, I'm curious if you'll listen to any of these first, then I'll give you more :)
Such a beautiful song, Depeche Mode truly opened this song for individual interpretation - how we struggle to fine an abode of contentment, our sacred home; whether gay, straight, skin colour, or anything other, all we want is love, happiness, and acceptance. I know that for the song writer himself, Martin Gore, it spoke of defeating alcoholism and finding a reality amongst friends and family in a sober state of mind. However, the lyrics, vocally beautified, applies to any human being attempting to belong and find an identity that is embraced by those pertinent or important enough to embrace and not judge us. As there is always hateful, ignorant human beings, it is about gravitation towards friends, family, a segment of society that makes us feel special, and not an outcast. Such amazingly wonderful sentiment. Definitely one of my favourite songs ever. I love your reaction, and your assessment of the meaning of this track is spectacularly magnificent, you are spot-on. INXS, Duran Duran, & Depeche Mode - three of my most beloved musical acts, thank you so much for the videos, sincerely.
The 90s depeche mode made me more fan of them (albums of my teenhood songs of faith and devotion and ultra (home is from this album) in the 90s depeche became more Rock electronic and more darker .. ps The version of this song in concert believe me is so emotional.
This song is from there Ultra album i recommend "Barrel Of A Gun" It's No Good" or " Insight" those were my favorites from that album though that whole album was fantastic. Great job PMD you are always detailed with your reaction videos
Kinda late to your DM party but I love how you make me feel like I'm hearing their songs for the first time allover again. Been a huge fan of theirs like most of your commenters here. The haunting coda has been edited out of the video version so I suggest you listen to the album version for the full experience. I always listen to this back to back with Bjork's equally haunting song called New World. Please give that song a listen.
Off and on until I was 30 I figure skated and did small competitions. The last competition I did I skated to Home. So many people at the rink would compliment the music then were surprised when I said it was Depeche Mode. For another Martin vocal departure, have you listened to One Caress?
@@MonicaLAlvarez i do not know much about the music industries but Depeche Mode is on an independent label MUTE records so the band's music will not be played by most radio DJs that are being paid by big mainstream music labels. Hence the band's album 'Music For The Masses' is kinda a dig at the mainstream music business (I think?). But yeah I have only being to one DM gig and i was in tears during a couple of their songs hahahhahaa.
Ok, cool. But....in retrospect I would have considered this as my husband and I's wedding song because my interpretation is that home is created by the love of the connection. The video showed a different interpretation...never saw that before. I saw being home as being married and gay and I finally belong and it's ok....
Cool...I also meant to add that when he peaks vocally with "I should have known, with my first breath." It's that moment of saying, why did I ever doubt this could happen? Hope you find your true love....we're going strong after 21 years....
Oh, and for the record our actual wedding song was The Carpenters "We've only just begun". Chosen for its purity, not nostalgia or kitsch or anything else....still a great song
I love when Martin is the lead singer in some of the songs!! He's amazing!!

I think you should move to "Barrel of a Gun" (also from 1997) next. Many people thought this was Martin writing "for" Dave, and about his problems... but as Martin said "I have my problems too!"
That’s such a beautifully tragic line. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
Barrel of a gun is a gem, masterpiece as well
'Barrel' is a powerful song. I like that he said that he has problems too.
Happier package?
Absolutely incorrect. Home is about him finding his real father. Martin is part black. His father was an American and in the military stationed within the UK. His Mom finally told him that the step father he thought was his real father wasn't. Couldn't imagine having to deal and cope with something so personal and life altering.

It's also about his divorce and the negative effect on everyone involved
Fletch revealed that is the song is about death
I really love Waiting For The Night and Surrender
Probably one of my favorite Depeche mode songs :) Can't go wrong :)
"Wrong" now you're talking! Gotta be the official music video though 👌
Great song... Ultra is a fantastic but underrated album. The singles of Ultra are amazing... Also, check out Sister of Night!
I cry every time I hear this song. Martin has a beautiful voice and it blends so well with Dave's.
