None of these live versions you listened to match the studio version, (nor are they their best live versions) it's not possible to with the amount of production that went into the studio version. Always listen to the studio version first, especially with metal. It can get pretty messy live and it's hard to capture the sound properly (particularly the heavy stuff)
It’s a shame because this is a really beautiful song, but not the best version. I’m hoping polo will do another version of this song either the studio version or a different version. By the way there are so many people that covered this song.

true story here - the song about James's girlfriend was Kristen. I met her several times. At that time, she was good friends with my girlfriend - but I never really understood how that ever came to be. James was in the hospital in summer 92. I had comped tickets to see them because of who i knew but that show w/ Guns and Roses in Oakland, CA was postponed as James was burned in an on-stage accident w/ some of the pyrotechnics. There is nothing like seeing Metallica live! And James is a master at writing lyrics! While you may not like their songs so much if you aren’t into metal everyone can relate to their lyrics. He puts it down in ways that the listener can always interpret them unto themselves.
This song was their first that wasn't really hard. It came after the band took a year-long break for the singer, James Hetfield, to go through therapy. The result of his therapy, which this song spells out, was that - for the first time in his life - he could take time out from being defensive and hard all the time and be open, gentle, sensitive when he needs to and express his feelings - a true breakthrough for him. This song was a revelation!!! It broke the fans' hearts - we all felt so deeply for James and the pain he went through - and this recovery that allowed him to be sensitive for the first time, to take a break from his anger. And it's lasted. He''s been a changed man ever since. The later song, The Unforgiven, probably also would never have happened if it hadn't been for that year of guided introspection that James took.
Love it, too. They never expected this to be the hit it became. And those were their old voices. There is an official video with their youthful voices. This song has a universal quality that has touched people everywhere---across genres. It has been covered by people from various genres and features some of the most beautiful guitar I've heard in my lifetime (67yo). Thank you for your reaction, POLO. 💜
I fell in love with this song when I was 11 yo. My brother was listening to his "cassettes" lol(this was 1993 or 4 guys) and I was just like omg... that was it. I fell in love with all albums he had. We bought more and more as we got older and saw them live as often as we could.
Damn Polo, I like your rhythm, meaning you are picking up exactly what they are dropping and yes, it does give you goosebumps when it has parallel context!! The thing is most if not all of their songs do! Yes, the anticipation and change ups in tempo are the smoothest transitions I’ve ever seen! It’s really cool to see someone with eclectic taste venture for more. The best ever is Metallica in Moscow - Enter Sandman and Creeping Death will def give you the chills. The Berlin Wall just came down and I think there’s like 1.6 million people in the crowd! To this day still holds the record for the largest live concert. Military helicopters flying over the top, but the crowd and Metallica didn’t have anymore F’s to hand out.
Seek& Destroy was the 1st song I heard by Metallica, in 1991. Been in love with Metallica ever since then. I never leave my apt without Jesus& Metallica
@@missygeno4391 I bought the Kill 'Em All album when it first came out, so I'd have to say that Hit The Lights was the first Metallica song i heard since it's the first track on the album lol. But the first song i fell in love with from that album is Four Horsemen. I think it was a combination of my love for metal, the fact that it was, and is still a great song and lastly my love at the time for professional wrestling, because i was a fan of Ric Flair (Whooooo!), Ole & Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard, known collectively as The Four Horsemen. 🤘🏇🏇🏇🏇

Hey Polo! Just binged trough your reactions and found the Metallica. Seeing someone light up listening to stuff I grew up with is amazing! I've seen Metallica a few times, the first time I saw them was in 1986, I was a teenager and took my 16 yrs old sister with me. They were opening for Ozzy at Riverbend
Love love earth concerts. James Hetfield as one of the best singing voices. You must go take a listen to Live aid from 1986 in Wembley from Queen. Freddie had the best voice ever and I will forever love his songs. Any song will do you pick.
This show was when James got detained at the airport after his plane landed. Airport security detained him for his "taliban-like" facial hair. They band had to perform their set later in the day.
I know many people love live -- but you really should listen to the original studio version, it's far more intense and growly + that's the version everybody got hooked on, which is why they can sing along to this one... ;)
Thank you for playing this, another song played at my son's funeral. His friends appreciated it much, they called themselves the "Nightriders". I LOVE Metallica! I grew up listening to them. My brother, sister, and I literally fell asleep to this album every night for years! Their music will always hold a special spot in my heart. And to this day, whatever feelings I might be struggling with I’ll turn to their music to help get my feet back on level ground. If I’m upset, sad, stressed, angry, overwhelmed or can’t sleep, Metallica just helps me feel better. (and of course when I’m in a good mood it’s always fun to listen to) 💛💛I think you would love VoicePlay’s cover of this song! I am a huge Metallica fan, and I have NEVER like a Metallica cover until VoicePlay’s. It’s amazing! Please please take a look at it 💛💛
Found your channel with Free Bird, will love to see your reaction from a Rock in Spanish Master Band call Soda Stereo, ho for the song Prófugos from Gira me verás volver, it’s an awesome piece from the band with an incredible public
The Metal Rock Ballad. Even Metal rockers wrote love songs. Elton John...said to James Hatfield, that this was beautiful and he wrote this song's piano because it has never been done.
The intro is the first thing I teach guitar students to make it seem accessible and possible. It's a wonderful song for young drummers to learn... but lead guitarists beware that's a hell of a solo.
I've been to so MANY rock shows. None more than Metallica. I've seen them more than anyone else. AC/DC, ZZ Top, Ozzy Osbourn, Zombie, Pearl jam, the List is Long they rock the stadiums. Today's kids don't know how to play music, they allow computers to do it and that is a shame because the truth comes out in the paint, in the music, in the lyrics... art is being lost in the rain... Thank you for opening up your mind and soul and listening to basically the last generation of music that is truth... the rage against the Machine... Instead of being against the powers TOO be, now its against each Other...sad truths.
If you like the song massages from a different band in a different era the band is called kiss and they put it on a song called Beth and that was one of their better songs but yet it was so soft and mellow and so much feelings behind it that it became a classic another one from a different style of band completely from the Eagles it's called Seven Bridges Road that was about melody in harmony when they performed it.
You may have done so by now, but imHo this was just a mere reference to the powerful ballad that the actual studio version is. You MUST get to know that version too :)
if this track does not stir any kind of emotions in a person regardless of what kind of music you represent in my eyes you have no soul. even my late father god rest his soul played this track in his final hours he was very old but appreciated the depth and pure talent this song blasts out.
There is a cover of this song by, of all people, Elton John and Miley Cyrus, but check out the live recording of Miley Cyrus singing with Metallica on the Hoeard Stern show where James talks about how this song came about.
If you want a real mind fk then listen to the Miley Cirus version (with the band no less). That might sound like a joke, but honestly it's worth a watch.
@@poloreacts27 That's the usual reaction to hearing about it, followed by surprise that Miley can actually sing, and has the perfect voice for it. It doesn't hurt that James H is standing next to her making happy noises at the performance.
Lars Ulrich (drums) started the band, Cliff Burton Bass (RIP), Jason Newstead replaced him and recorded the most records. He left over creative differences a decade ago. Dave Mustang (Megadeth) brother in law to James Hetfield (lead vocals/ rhythm guitar), Kirk Hamlet (lead guitar) Former Suicidal Tenancies, and Ozzy Osbourne bassist Robert Trujillo. Who raw talent may be on par with the late Cliff. Touring Europe, asleep in the bus, the driver lost control. Blamed black ice, but James said there wasn't any. Cliff died in accident. of Dave Mustaine was too wild for young 'Alcholica' as they were known. Kicked him out of the band. Oh The young band had responded to an add in a rock magazine for a battle of the bands and had circulated a demo tape and it was rather popular, local DJ's played it on air and people ate it up. Now they turned up to the battle of the bands and as they were about to take the stage the MC asked what thier name was. They realized they never thought of one. So scrambling to announce something je said hmm metal... Metallica James didn't want to sing but as they never found a singer he was stuck with the job
Another song that has unique, relatable lyrics and puts you in the headspace of another person (a homeless person) I'd love to see you react to Pearl Jam-Even Flow
Welcome to the dark side brother... You start on this path, there ain't no turning back you know.. There's a reason their one of the greatest bands of all time, and still are.. Number 7 in the last 12 months of the biggest earning bands , next to Paul McCartney, the rolling stones, and the young lady called Taylor swift.. The studio version, the video is actually them in the studio recording it.. It's a cool video.. Great reaction my friend.🤟😎🙏

You need to check out nothing else matters live performance with hundred piece orchestra
Trust me, react to master of puppets live in Manchester 2019! That was a god level performance!
I second this, and this is a very beutiful feeling to endorse a song 35 years old and being sure nobody will be dissapointed
The Metal Rock Ballad. Even Metal rockers wrote love songs. Elton John...said to James Hatfield, that this was beautiful and he wrote this song's piano because it has never been done.
Check out the Chris Stapleton cover and Miley Cyrus singing with Metallica on Howard Stern both amazing
The intro is the first thing I teach guitar students to make it seem accessible and possible. It's a wonderful song for young drummers to learn... but lead guitarists beware that's a hell of a solo.
🤘💝🤘This was my Wedding song 🎵 🤟✌️
My nephew played this for me on my mom's guitar for my wedding.
Instead of being against the powers TOO be, now its against each
Other...sad truths.
Check out Enter Sandman.. one of their best.. Sweet dreams.. lol
Those that say the version with the San Francisco Symphonic Orchestra are 100% correct
You have to give that a listen.
The Kings 🤘
You may have done so by now, but imHo this was just a mere reference to the powerful ballad that the actual studio version is. You MUST get to know that version too :)
I love it
This was the first dance at my wedding
VoicePlay did their version of this song on my birthday this year. Please do react, it is gorgeous.
This is a nice rendition, but you really need to listen to the live version they did with SF symphony orchestra, from the album S&M.
if this track does not stir any kind of emotions in a person regardless of what kind of music you represent in my eyes you have no soul.
even my late father god rest his soul played this track in his final hours he was very old but appreciated the depth and pure talent this song blasts out.
True
Discovering metallica is about understanding the load and reload albums man
I’m 47. This takes me right back to high school. This is a very soft version of this song though.
The studio setting is way much better
How about "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath video! Love your little wooden doo hitchie in the background.
There is a cover of this song by, of all people, Elton John and Miley Cyrus, but check out the live recording of Miley Cyrus singing with Metallica on the Hoeard Stern show where James talks about how this song came about.
Not sure if it was mentioned, but that intro was a Jimi Hendrix riff
Please listen to the original studio version. It will hit your heart.
They have the best concerts. You need to React to One.
If you want a real mind fk then listen to the Miley Cirus version (with the band no less). That might sound like a joke, but honestly it's worth a watch.
I was laughing reading this 😂
@@poloreacts27 That's the usual reaction to hearing about it, followed by surprise that Miley can actually sing, and has the perfect voice for it. It doesn't hurt that James H is standing next to her making happy noises at the performance.
@@poloreacts27 Personally I prefer Chris Stapleton's version.
I've just listened to it.
Thank you for the discovery 😉
@@poloreacts27 she did it with Metallica on Howard Stern. She’s born to sing Metal. Check it out!
Metallica
James didn't want to sing but as they never found a singer he was stuck with the job
You need to react to Sanatorium. You'll love it.
I'm just glad you didn't start with Enter Sandman, like many others.
Must recommend their song Blackened, or Disposable Heroes.
you should listen to "orion" its only music with no words but it shows the skills that Metallica have
Another song that has unique, relatable lyrics and puts you in the headspace of another person (a homeless person) I'd love to see you react to Pearl Jam-Even Flow
