Music for the Masses is one of the greatest albums ever - certainly of the 80's. The whole thing is utterly memorable. If you drove on a trip to this, you'd never want to stop. The track is so great... and probably only the fifth or sixth best track on the album!
Dave Gahan's baritone vocals are integral; you couldn't have Depeche Mode without them. Though, they have some instrumental songs that slap. Dark, atmospheric, sad dancing! 😭 Thanks for listening. This song is from the album before their masterpiece 'Violator', which I think will win a poll eventually. They had a more Pop sound when this song was made, before going into a Rock vibe. You're right that they're unique, they defined angsty new wave synth. Innovators!
Dave’s voice sets the tone for everything! It sounds so detached yet evocative … like a cat you want to pet that won’t let you! 😂 If you think about it, it represents the allure of an aloof man who is off-putting to women. They are generally used to always having a man’s attention. But Dave’s voice - and dM’s music - is distant. Sensual but distant … and ultimately it leaves you wanting more and more and more. 🥀
Depeche Mode is one of the defining bands of the late 1980s through the 2000s, and they are one of my favorite bands of all time. This album is when they were really starting to delve into their darker side, and this song is so catchy and infectious! They sort of became one of the defacto bands that the Goth crowd adopted as their own. Thanks for reacting to this one and I look forward to seeing more video reactions to Depeche Mode!
I am crazy biased because this is my favorite band of all time. See them 13 times live since 87. Amazing band that have influenced tons of bands. One of the greatest live bands ever. One of the greatest frontmen of all time
Depeche Mode are STILL the best live act out there, hands down. I was lucky enough to see them just over a year ago when I drove 9 hours one-way from central Arkansas in 4/24 at the beginning of their last tour, and it was incredible! (I was thrilled to see the mix of different ages in attendance: not just a bunch of Gen-Xers like myself, although there were plenty of us, but lots of younger people too.) They’ve always been an amazing band live, and I’m impressed with their ability to keep it up still at their age, tbh. Dave and Martin are in their early 60’s now, and Dave is still dancing all over the stage, holding the audience in the palm of his hand the whole time. A DM show isn’t just a concert, it’s an experience. We were there on a Sunday night-many others were in an actual church that evening, but several thousand DM Devotees were having their own religious experience in San Antonio, TX that night. 💜🖤
The Depeche Mode mix of "Behind The Wheel/Route 66" one one of the best things that they've done. I think it was specially made for one of the Sire Records samplers back int eh 80's, but it is fantastic.
I just fell on your reaction video about Depeche Mode. " Music for the masses " is one of the most amazing album. My friend made me listen to one song of Depeche Mode and I immediately fell in love with this group. I have to say that my favorite songs are " Strangelove " and "Halo ". Depeche Mode will forever be one of my favorite groups. 80's STILL rocks baby 🤘🤘🤘❤❤❤
One of my all-time favorite melodies and certainly part of my Top 20 from the 80's. So many great Depeche Mode tracks from their start at the beginning of the 80's with "Just can't get enough" and "Everything counts" and then just cascading with a torrent of great songs from there... Have fun discovering them. Cheers!
This song live from The Rose Bowl is a super hype song to check out the whole crowd is jumping around also Never Let Me Down Again from that tour where Dave gets the whole crowd to do the see of hands was and the ending break
Depeche Mode is one of my all time favourite bands, they never disappoint and are amazing live. Dave Gahan and Martin Gore are geniuses (RIP Fletch) The Violater album is one of the best albums ever
Oh Depeche Mode is definitely a particular flavor. I agree that the Gahan/Gore vocal combination is so distinctive. Tho I find I have to ration out my exposure - it does something very strange & dark to my brain. 😂
That is the beauty of 80's Songs/Music - it can be many things ALL at Once :-D You might have fun checking out some Early Depeche Mode from 80'-81. JUST CAN'T GET ENOUGH was one of their first hits to cross the pond :-D
DM IMHO are so eclectic with how they sound. Spinning music at weddings/parties in the 80s and 90s it was the best to throw on some DM and watch the floor jam. The remix of this with their version of the 60s tune Route 66 is crazy awesome🔥🔥🔥
I am a forever DM fan since they first came out. The best album I have in my collection is " Music for the Masses" . Depeche Mode is still touring. My guys. Every single song they've ever done is forever 🔥 Canadian Grandma Lori. C.
DM pioneered the industrial sound, but also blended it with the utterly human lyrics and the mesmerizing voice of Dave Gahan. Listen through their first FIVE albums to see then develop this utterly unique sound. DM is one of my top 3 bands of all time. You can hear where The Weekend got the inspiration for his recent successful tunes.
I had a New Wave Band back in the day and we opened our set with this song. That said, we played the darker version found on 101. It's the song the opened with on that famous Pasadena concert. That's where we picked up the idea ourselves. It just sets the mood perfectly! But take a listen to that other version. Way darker and more intense. This version is "happier" and "clubier". And yes, this album cemented them as Megastars!
Just about every DM singles has about 10 remixes. Many interesting and different. Very popular in physical sales, very popular on tour, and very popular in the dance clubs.
This track has another 'mix' . . . one I prefer more. And the one that was on the US cd version of 'Music for the Masses' that I always owned. Til it was lifted out of my car !
I read that the band were insistent on the album version of this track have no hi-hat in it. This Shep Pettibone single remix adds loads of extra percussion (as he so often did) and I agree, the original mix on the album hits different. It's darker.
Amazing band, one of the Best consecutive album runs i'm music history! Some Great Reward, Black Celebration, Música for the Masses, Violator (the album you're thinking about in the beginning of the vid), Songs of Faith and Devotion, Ultra. Once of those banda that Always surprises
This is it. This is the song that got me into the Mode and essentially shaped the style of my life. A lost, depressed teen who finally found something that expressed ME. There was nothing out there that looked and sounded like this. dM remains an essential part of my everyday life 35+ years later.
Great choice - note that DMode released official extended 12" mixes of this and other songs of theirs. Never Let Me Down Again has some great mixes as well.
"Strange love" was much better off this same album, They're biggest hit period is from the first album you did called violator, the song is "enjoy the silence" a must. "The world in my eyes" off violator was a banger too. Probably do enjoy the silence next. That's a must and then either strange love or world in my eyes no matter which order you will love both. I know this song you just did was good but it's average compared to a lot of their other stuff.
Today's generation can recreate all sounds that your creative mind can come up with, but they were pioneering back in the 80is. These sounds were so fresh and unique...
This is a remix version for the video, so not quite what you'd read the summary on, but a great version! The original album version is a different mixing of most of the same sounds and without the quicker beat overtop - not a radically different remix, this one is just less moody and has brighter tones than the darker (but not slow) original form. I think this one is great for the bop of it, the original is great for pressing the lyrical meaning better. Both have their strong points! And oh yeah, you def got the meaning of the lyrics. Primary song writer, Martin, until a few songs in recent years is openly a submissive in personal matters and in general personality. Their songs have been heavily on sex or related relationship matters, especially in the early decades, so that's the recurring angle to those subjects. And any day of the week, Dave's lead with Martin's backing vocals are always gold, any DM song/version.
Great Reaction, Guy. DMode was so huge during this time. Summer outdoor concerts. Even my 50.yr old mother and 14 year old sister attended with me. Listen next to the lead single & video from this album ' Strangelove' great dance beat you will enjoy!❤❤❤
DM are an incredible band and as noted below, they influenced tons of music that came after. The album from the last song was Violator, another great album. They have a darker brooding sound, but always with incredible beats. They were a staple of the alternative dance clubs. Along with New Order, they ruled the clubs! Other songs to check out: Strange Love (Blind Mix), Never Let Me Down Again (split mix with an incredible second half outro), Get the Balance Right (Combination Mix), Route 66 (Beatmasters Mix), Halo, Stripped, Breathing in Fumes, It's No Good (incredible song, but album cut, the video loses a lot of the music in the storytelling), Personal Jesus, Barrell of a Gun, Enjoy the Silence... I can go on and on!!!
Get The Balance Right is my fave DM song the extended remix which I have had since it first was released and played at gigs I DJd in the 80s and 90s whenever I could.
Bought this album on release and my impression after the first listen was that every single song sounded familiar... as-in songs that I had known and loved for a long time. The title is the perfect name for it. Edit: This sounds like a remix/remaster but hey, it's Depeche Mode so it's okay by me.
This band was unique up until 1993, and there will probably never be a band that will come even close to them, ever. So it's a huge shame that they ended up the way they did, a lala band. Im still crying over what happen in 1995...
It`s a brilliant track, The album version is my fav. May I put forward a brilliant track from DM "I Feel you" the production is fantastic even now days.
Salvo, since you seem to be somewhat partial to synthpop, I have an absolutely foolproof recommendation for you: Cloud Control by the Swedish group NASA from 1999. An impossibly luscious tune that should have been a galactic gigahit - and could still become one on your channel.
Nice (again) description of the music. Beyond 'techno'. Definitely took that 80s vibe of vaguely Goth ambiguity that Genesis championed and took it forward. Menacing is a good adjective.
I think it would be great to jump to their newest album that came out last year and try Before we drown, the best song on the album. Unlike other big bands, DM have kept doing great music, even if not as great as when they were at their peak. Before we drown is the perfect blend between their classic sound with a modern falvor. You will love it :-)
It always seemed strange for me it took Enjoy The Silence and the Violator album for the world as a whole to notice Depeche Mode's musical brilliance ... For years before Violator they've been creating mindblowing songs after mindblowing songs ...
Love your reactions. Check out Lara Fabian, Adiago, from Lara with love, live version if you want to hear the best female singer in the planet. I subscribed just to hear you react to it…it’s AMAZING!
Do you wanna listen to a really new song for you? "Then check out "Herbert Grönemeyer - Der Weg" live in 2003 with subtitles. This is a german song and I really would like to see your reaction.;-)
Might as well do "Never Let Me Down Again" from the same album next :) Cool seeing you dig bands like Depeche Mode this much!
The aggro mix is better though
Music for the Masses is one of the greatest albums ever - certainly of the 80's. The whole thing is utterly memorable. If you drove on a trip to this, you'd never want to stop. The track is so great... and probably only the fifth or sixth best track on the album!
Yes! "Do you kind of mope when you dance to it?" is the perfect description.
"Strange Love " and "Never let me Down Again " are a must from the same album. ❤🎵

@@paulvolk2111Love "Nothing" and " Little 15".

@@miavega8888 right, the album before Violator

Depeche Mode song "Higher Love."
So true!
Beautiful! But the build and burn of “In Your Room” on that album is the absolute ultimate masterpiece.
OMG and In Your Room
@@wscottwalters74 but the album version. Fuck I love the hole album.

Another Depeche Mode masterpiece.
You have to do Enjoy The Silence as well as Strange Love....
The "panicked" background vocals from Martin harken to the iconic Psycho shower scene soundtrack.
Behind the Wheel comes much better when they combined and did the mix for the two BEHIND THE WHEEL/ROUTE 66 - that is the definitive version
So you are so right.
Spinning that at parties (even weddings) I DJd was awesome.😊
Depeche Mode is one of my all time favourite bands, they never disappoint and are amazing live. Dave Gahan and Martin Gore are geniuses (RIP Fletch) The Violater album is one of the best albums ever
I had forgotten how much I loved this song. And also that I had no idea what he was singing about as a kid.

New Wave, alternative, synth, electronic pop rock. That’s danceable. How’s that?
The version of the song on Music for the Masses album is much creepier than the version they used for the video.

I honestly hate the video version. The album version is pretty different and somehow darker, more atmospheric and better developed.
This is the first time I saw the video. Totally agree with you that the album version is better..
Same with Strangelove. The album/ studio version is much better than the video version.
His voice, to me, has hints of Jim Morrison of The Doors
you need to do People are People....or Never Let me Down Again...Master and Servant for sure
If you are moving slowly backwards through the DM catalog the next logical move would be "Shake the Disease" edgy as Fk. 😉 Genius .
