- If you're residing in Pattaya, Jomtien, or any other part of Thailand, you might find the idea of flying a drone appealing. In the past, obtaining permission was a bit of a challenge, but now, it is more straightforward than ever to fly a drone legally in Thailand. I will guide you through a simple and hassle-free process to ensure you can enjoy flying your drone with complete peace of mind.
There are many opportunities to make fantastic videos here in Thailand as the beautiful landscape looks great from above. Jomtien Beach, Pattaya, Chang Mai... So many places to explore from the air.
NOTES:
All drones in Thailand need to be registered regardless of their weight.
In Thailand, flying above 90 meters or flying after sunset is prohibited.
The registration process can take up to 2 weeks and while it can be started in advance, it can only be finalised when you arrive in Thailand.

Yes it is. The under 250g rule doesn't apply here. I use the the DJI Mini 3 Pro also.

Thanks so much for this awesome info. I feel so relieved taking my drones to Thailand now. May I know how long (max) a one time registration will last before the next registration is required?

Do they check at customs if your drone is registered and have insurence? Or can i just bring it without flying?
No they don't. Bring it without flying? Why bring it?
I just think it´s BS to pay over 150 euros to "be able" to fly your drone. What is the next thing they come up with, should i pay to bring my GoPro as well?@@fromoneendofthailand
150 Euros? Where did you get that figure? Does your GoPro fly through the air and use radio waves? Good luck.
@@NorthSurvivalGoPros aren’t generally known for flying into controlled airspaces or having the immediate potential for causing harm, so no, you don’t need to worry yourself about a registration fee on your GoPro.
That is not what it is about, in sweden where i live we can fly without any problems or paying a bunch of money for flying. I still don't fly in any controlled airspaces even though i havent been forced to pay the goverment a bunch of money for flying a toy with a camera. It would have been ok just to register it (or even not if it falls below 250g like most of europe)
Thailand is always trying to exploit the tourists, for example if i am going to a national park with a thai friend, i have to pay 400 Baht while he needs to pay only 40 Baht, why the f should i pay 10x as much as him for being a tourist. I am taking up the same space as him, and i don´t litter or cause any harm. @@JaredDoyle76

Thank you for sharing Heath, very informative. Registering before arriving is a big plus. Any benefit to using a DJI drone under the 250 gram threshold? Any testing/certification required like in the US?
You're welcome. In Thailand you would need to be registered whatever the weight. Not the same as Europe and the USA.
Hi man!
Thanks for this great video.
One question though, as you’ve mentioned, it takes around 2 weeks to get the permission, but what do you mean with 3-4 days more when you’ve arrived to thailand? is it something i have too collect while in thailand? Or do i write to the insurance company when i’ve arrived to thailand?
Also do you get the permit on your email to show it up if needed, or how does it work?
Cheers!
The last part of the applications needs to be done when you arrive as it needs a scan/photo of your visa stamp and that takes a few days. Yes it can all be done via email.
Thanks for the info king

Thanks a lot for sharing. How long will it take to get the permit if you get it through FEIC? I want to make sure I can get it soon enough before my holiday in Thailand ends XD
You're welcome. Sorry I do not know how long the process will take but I believe it's less than 2 weeks. 👍
Thank You!
You're welcome.
For all the years of me living in and visiting Thailand, the bureaucracy never ceases to astound me, this process cold be so much easier and faster, but for the cost of £60 ish its almost a no brainer to register using feic, my next question i guess is how to renew the permit if you leave the country for example for a week or so and return.
Good question. I will answer but I can not say 100%. As far as I am aware, although your insurance is for one year, the CAAT and NBTC will only grant you a licence until the expiry date of your visa.
@@fromoneendofthailand No I know about the permit being valid for the visa length.
My question was more about renewal process, how is it done? do you have to do a full application again or is there a shorter process for renewals
Yes, renewals are easier as most of the documents remain the same. If you leave the country you would still be covered when you return (if within the validity of your licences of course) @@jasonlee4267
I went to Thailand, I have left and will be returning in the next 2 weeks for another month.

Thanks for the comment and welcome to the channel. Good question. I am not sure, you would need to asked at the time of registering. Certainly do let me know the outcome. 👍
I thought if it was under a certain weight
you don't have to register it ?
In Thailand you do. The under 250 gram exemption doesn't apply here.
Hi! I'm going to travel to Thailand in January. If I pay for this faster FEIC service, how many days does it take after I arrive in Thailand to access the final permit? Thank you !!! 🙂

Hi thanks for the tips! What about the flying zone map? Where can I get it and how do we know which area is a no fly zone?
I don't think there is such a map. The CAAT website lists a few dos and don't. Just just clear of government buildings, royal palaces, military bases and within 7km of an airport. Places like that.
thank you 🙏
Welcome. 👍
Hi Heath…I am looking at flying a drone in Thailand. I have never done this yet..I am a complete newbie! Should I buy one from Australia or buy it in Thailand? Which model is “best” to learn!? Thanks.
IMO, The best drones are the DJI brand but a good budget drone is the SJRC F11 which was the drone I used in my earlier videos (they are about £140 so ideal for a first drone). However, the SJRCs do not come with serial numbers so they are difficult to register without jumping through extra hoops. So maybe a DJI Mini 2 or 3 would be the best choice and you won't grow out of it as the quality of the cameras is excellent. This video may be helpful regarding buying one here. th-cam.com/video/x0NkJBqKq1A/w-d-xo.html
Any info on which places allow you to fly the drone?
You can fly mostly anywhere in Thailand (for now) except the obvious central cities, hospitals, schools, within 6km of an airport, government buildings and military places.
Is there any app to check where can fly the drone ? Thanks a lot
Not that I know of but it's only the obvious places like military bases, palaces, hospitals and stadiums. If you are flying a DJI drone, then the maps should tell you if you are near a no-fly zone.
Thanks Heath, good information. We arrive in Thailand October 24 for 15 days and will be staying mostly in Phuket. I have a DJI Mini SE. Do I still have to register if it is less than 250 grams and if so can you get insurance just for 2 weeks (or a month?), thanks again
Thanks. You would still need to register your drone. The under 250 grams weight makes no difference here. 😎
OK thanks@@fromoneendofthailand
I’m heading there next month, specially pattaya, where can I buy the longer flight batteries? For how much? And specifically for which drone(s)?
Sorry I don't know. Best to Google the model of your drone followed by "fly more batteries". Note that you may only be permitted to return home with a limited number of batteries in your carry-on luggage so check with the airline. Also note that fly more batteries will put your DJI mini over the legal weight for your country's licensing exemption.
Is there any restriction to carry/ bring drone from other country to Thailand?
No.
Thanks for the video- do you need a drone licence too?
Registering gives you a licence.
@@fromoneendofthailand perfect, thanks again 😊
Hello Heath! I went thru the comment to find an answer to my question but I wasn't able to find any.
In a previous comment you said "The permit gets finalized once you are actually in Thailand. This is because they need a photo of your visa or visa waiver stamp to complete the process."
But what if I get the visa prior to coming to Thailand?
I will stay in Kuala Lumpur for a week and I will get my 60d tourist visa from the Thai Embassy in Kuala Lumpur. After getting that visa can I send a scan of it online to FEIC to get the permit? Or do I need to enter Thailand?
I believe they want a photo of your date of entry as they will only grant you a licence up to the maximum possible length of your stay on whatever visa you have. Hope this helps.
I will be going to Thailand for 35 days. I will apply for a visa months before travel. Does this mean that i can get the license before entering the country as visa waiver doesnt apply?
I think they require a photo of your passport page with the stamp. If you drop them an email via their website I find they reply within a day.
On average, how long does it take to get the drone registration?
Normally a couple of weeks. It's been different each time I have done it.
Thanks for this helpful video! :) Im considering buying a drone for my Thailand trip and getting an easy permit makes me lean towards actually getting one. Are there any cities/areas where even with a permit it is not allowed to fly drones?
I'm glad the video was helpful. There are a few no-fly zones in Bangkok around high buildings, events and palaces as you would expect, and obvious places like military areas, but there are no restrictions in the Pattaya/Jomtien area.
@@fromoneendofthailand thanks for the reply☺️ and what about in the islands? Krabi, phiphi, koh samui?

How long does it take to get it registered!
About 2 weeks and then a further few days once you are in Thailand.
So if you register online before you arrive how or what is the finalisation steps when you get to Thailand?
Sending a copy of your entry stamp or visa.
Ok found it.
The Drone Registration Process
Our drone registration service will follow these steps;
1: Buy your Thailand drone insurance from us.
2: We will send a link to apply for the Thailand drone registration service, fill in the form and pay THB 1,498 online. This price includes tax and all government fees.
3: We will then submit your registration to CAAT, this can take around 2 weeks and can be done before you arrive in Thailand.
4: Upon your arrival in Thailand you will need to send us a photo of your immigration stamp in your passport, then we can process your NBTC registration, this can take 2-3 days.
5: We will send your CAAT and NBTC registration certificates once each step is complete. Once both CAAT and NBTC are done then the service is complete and you can legally fly your drone in Thailand.
@@fromoneendofthailand thanks.
Hi Heath, on the insurance it asks for the liability limit. Is there a minimum? Is there a figure you recommended?
The requirement for Thailand is one million Baht. 😎
how long does the final process take when you arrive in Thailand ( I assume that photo of your passport with the entry stamp), I heard that after this it can still take up to 2 weeks ?

Hi heath very informative video, 1 question though you mentioned 1500 bht for registration does that include insurance or 1500 on top of insurance fees?

I am a bit confused. Maybe you can help? If buying used drone in Thailand , cannot seem to register it with NBTC as not on register. I can get it CAAT registered and insurance but not on NBTC as over 30 days in country and not registered. So does this route resolve it? Is it same for Thai nationals?
Not sure on a used drone. I imagine it's already registered with NBTC so just update the owner details with the NBTC .

Not sure if I am out this Friday night. Drop me an email via my website and I'll email you when I go out next. 👍
Can you summarise with how much money it'll cost me to register the drone in Thailand?
Insurance 1600. For the insurance company to register with the CAAT and NBTC it's another 1500, approx.
My first time flying in Thailand, I did all that paperwork myself, it was a pain in the a**. Lots of misinformation and run around too.
Then when I returned about a month and a half later, they had just implemented the OpenSky app. That was cool. I flew right over nana BTS/Sukhumvit area in the middle of the day and got some nice B-roll of the trains and buildings. My condo manager is super cool and wrote me the document saying I could launch from the rooftop. I will say though, the 90m ceiling is a bit of a drag, many of the buildings are higher than that in that area. Also, trying to get permission from certain popular malls along the river is annoying because they don’t seem to know drone laws and give you the run around such as telling you to contact the embassy or the police. I’ll be back in a couple of months so I will once again try to get a sunset shot of said mall and river front scenery. We’ll see how it goes. 🤷🏻♂️
Thanks Heath. I am just passing through Thailand for 3 days and will be travelling with my drone. I don’t intend to fly it as I won’t get the license to fly on time. Would I get my drone confiscated at the airport even if I am not going to fly it?

You would need to register both drones separately.
