What I Do Not Like About Living in Jomtien Pattaya, Thailand

  • There are a few things I do not like about living in Jomtien Thailand. A few people have asked me this question so I thought I would make a video and tell you what I like and do not like about living in Thailand. I talk about everyday things from the price of wine, snow, noise and the beautiful ladies.
If you're looking for a place that combines culture, relaxation and a genuine sense of belonging, then a visit to Jomtien Pattaya Beach should be on your list.

    Leave a “nice” comment. 😎

I don`t see many videos of things people DON`T like about Thailand, so this was refreshing. And it is hard to disagree with you, I recognized all of them, except the snow part.
But I will add a few more. First, the fact that tourist destinations always draw out a few Thais who have criminal intentions. Like scams, or thefts. Just be aware, and hang on to your belongings.
Secondly, the traffic. There are lots of accidents and deaths in Thailand traffic, lots of reckless driving and even drunk driving. Again, be aware, drive safely, always use a helmet when driving motorbike, wear seatbelts, and never drive after drinking.
Third, the different pricing system for Thais and farangs. It may feel a bit unfair, but is of course not a big deal.
I will add a couple of more things to like about Thailand too. First, I hear many say the feeling of freedom driving your own motorbike. Feeling the fresh air against your skin. Lots of farangs never drive motorbike in their own country, but here "everyone" seems to have one. And it`s a good reason for that. Perfect temperature, and it`s just the easiest way to get around.
And secondly, you mentioned Thai food, but I would say the variety of food. At places like Jomtien and Pattaya, Bangkok or Phuket, you can really get everything you can imagine. Dishes from all over the world, and you don`t have to travel far to get it. That alone should be a good reason to come to Thailand. The variety of food from Asia, Europe, Australia, Middle East, America (Mexico). If you go hungry here, you should check your pulse.
One more thing, in Thailand it is so easy to make new friends. People are open for new friendship, with other expats or with Thais. They will invite you into their homes, if you befriend a Thai. In the west, it is a much more "closed" society, where people often don`t even know their neighbors` names..
Just a few things popping into my head, I do have lots more. Thank you for this video, Heath 😊😊

For Snow - Taiwan is a very short flight.
    - Many don't know Taiwan has more than 265 mountains over 3000 m.
In the winter, it's easy to be at a "tropical" beach and quickly drive to snow and sub-alpine environments.

Outrageous of the Bhat bus driver to ask you to leave the bus in the wet weather, carrying shopping, just because he wanted to turn back. Have seen them turn around immediately the bus is empty, which is bad enough and as someone who would be reliant on transport, puts me off the further reaches of Jomtien. You and many others did generous, wonderful work to help struggling people in a time of great need, and although I am sure not for expecting future reward, I share your disappointment that the gratitude was short lived among some people.

maybe another thing to add to the list is the "garbage" people leave on the beach or sidewalk near the beach,,, plastic food dishes, beer bottles, empty ice bags, etc.... sure the next day someone has to clean it,,, but the littering is terrible, especially on weekends when the Thai tourism comes to Jomtien beach ... I agreed with everything you said, but I think you left out a good few negatives I thought would get a mention, that apply to Pattaya mostly but also Jomtien in places. 1. The poor quality of pavements, often very narrow, with multiple holes, broken edges, sticking out bolts / metal, electrical posts often with dodgy wiring running down to torso level that you have to slalom around, making it a trip hazard nightmare especially when negotiating your way past groups of others in the busier parts of town. 2. The open sewers on side streets (at least they were there a decade ago when I last visited). Very stinky. 3. Aggressive packs of Soi dogs (as some others have mentioned). 4. Songkran, which is officially only 1 day long but the Thais treat as a whole week during which you cannot go anywhere without being assaulted with buckets of water sometimes containing solid ice, especially bad if you are on the way out to an air conditioned restaurant or a shopping mall / movie - some ex-pats disappear to elsewhere in Thailand for that week, for good reason. 5. Insane motorbike riders, especially motorbike taxis which can be particularly heart-stopping if you are on the back of one, wondering if your kneecaps are about to go bye-bye. 6. Numerous scams you have to keep an eye out for, often backed up by violence, like the Jet Ski scams, which meant I didn't go near a JetSki any time I was there. 7. Pushy beach sellers who will never leave you alone - 1 actually woke me up while sleeping to try and sell me his trash - me and the concession staff chased him down the beach for that. 8. No prices on items in many shops with constant "discounts" signs in the window, where the sellers try extremely hard to rip you off because you are Falang not Thai. Maybe I'm a bit picky, and I guess you get normalised to a these things if you are an ex-pat, but these stood out to me when I was an occasional visitor. I actually loved the place, the people, the food and the weather, the many times I visited Pattaya, Jomtien, Bangkok and Chiang Mai, with the many positives outshining the negatives, and at the end of each holiday I couldn't wait to get back there again. I was thinking about maybe moving there after retirement, but after a number of years visiting I found that I was getting a little bored with the same old same old holidays and it started to lose its charm, and I realised it wasn't quite for me. But I can''t stop watching TH-cam videos and fantasising about living there.

I have only been there as a tourist on many occasions, the only thing that gets me a bit mad is the lack of respect for pedestrians, no one stops at crossings and they drive through red traffic lights when you have the little green man to cross the road. They need to install some cameras and start enforcing the rules. Having said that it is much worse in Manila, absolutely no chance of getting across the road there.

Sadly you have to learn to drive like a Thai and the point you make is a good one. Thai drivers in the main don't care about pedestrians. Foreign drivers have learned to stop for pedestrians only if it absolutely safe to do so. You could stop and a car or bike could easily overtake you and hit the pedestrian. It seems wrong but they are much safer just waiting for a decent gap in the traffic.

Good question. When I first came here I lived on the darkside and Jomtien was always a nice place I would visit. I was offered a nice condo in a highrise overlooking the beach in Jomtien. I am currently seeing a nice lady who isn't a bar girl. She works and does not need me to support her, so yes, it is possible.

One tip to anyone thinking of visiting. Pattaya is way way way too loud at night. You won’t be able to sleep. So far better to stay in Jomtien beach. It’s about a 5 min baht bus ride to go to Pattaya for the clubs etc etc. plus jomtien beach is nicer.

People also know very little about Thai law and culture as in wearing no top in public, shows of affection in public, also vaping, one small issue with your video,I am not sure there is any specific Thai law that prohibits smoking of cannabis in public, but it can be reported as a public nuisance the same as cigarettes, but I agree that it’s a pain and avoid bars that permit the smoking of weed, last time we spoke about TH-camrs and work permits, how does that work out????

    • @oneendofthailand
      @oneendofthailand  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

I created an informative video about cannabis regulations, but TH-cam marked it as restricted content so I took it down. The regulations specify that cannabis consumption is permitted only within private residences. Action is only taken if reported, as with most nuisance related laws. If you detect the scent of cannabis on your property, including on your balcony, you have the right to report it. However, a quiet word with your neighbour would probably be more effective.

I know what you mean about the widely held perception of Pattaya. Like you, I know it is a misperception and I have decided to live in Jomtien.
Stereotyping in Thailand definitely exists and needs to be more carefully applied. It can be a two-way thing. Sometimes a truism.
BUT, Thailand and its people are wonderful. I love both!
Buddhism is, I believe, a foundation of gentle behaviour and smiles. At the same time, Thai social psychology is complex.
There are good people and "bad" people in all cultures. Personally, I am appalled by some foreigners' attitudes and behaviours evidenced in Thailand when they visit or stay as expats. For my part, I believe I should have made Thailand my home 25 years ago. I have been to Thailand close to twenty times in that 25 years. Never for sex tourism. Many times (yearly) in transit to Europe where I had an apartment, often spending three days each way in Bangkok. Other visits have been for two months duration in the Issan, Phuket, Pattaya and Rayong regions ( respectfully at different times). On different occasions, I have travelled alone, with an ex-partner, my daughters or my brother. I am now 70 years of age and have extensively travelled the world.
Thailand is now my choice to spend my last years.
I will not be in bars with Ferangs who I would never waste my time talking to in my home country, Thailand, or anywhere else for that matter.
Not every Ferang is an arrogant sex tourist, narcissistic racist, and uncouth beer-swilling numbskull slob. (but many are).
Unfortunately, the mighty dollar (and baht) excuses more than should be tolerated by the Thai people in the name of increasing local GDP.
I am confident I will be welcome in my new, future home after I move from the "Land of Clowns". 555
There is so much more of Thailand I want to see and experience before I shuffle off this mortal coil.

I am in Jomtien now and for the next few months, good list Heath! I cycle most days, on a white road bike, I'm sure our paths may cross! Anyways... the questionable driving from farangs and Thai's here annoys me big time. Like that junction in Jomtien with red lights at 7/11, I'd be coming down Kanchana Alley with a green light to come onto main road, so I go ahead... and a baht bus driver is flying along through a red light straight at me as i come onto the beach road, i had to pull the brakes or be hit. Red lights don't mean shit to drivers here. Probably same baht bus driver who threw you out, arsehole... anyways just a bit surprised you didn't mention roads as it's main thing for me, not surprised its one of the highest ranking countries for road deaths.
