So while the thought of a automatic trans makes many of us sad and/or sick to our stomachs.... Having the option for it opens the door for a lot of people. I've been driving and tuning Japanese cars since the early 90's. Along the way i have met some really cool and passionate car enthusiasts who were unable to drive cars with a manual trans because of different disabilities or health issues. If you've ever been to large car events or SCCA race weekends I'm sure you've noticed at least one person in a wheelchair. Having been to a dozen or so SEMA shows over the years, I've met quite a few car fans who were either in wheelchairs or Jazzys etc- who built some really cool cars that were equipped with auto transmissions out of necessity. One of my closest friends has MS and has lost movement in both legs, but owns a number of JDM cars that HAD to be anto trans in order for him to drive them. He actually sent me a text with the link to this video LOL!

Being a 8 speed, i figured the gearing would be different (like you said you were in the same gear through a corner in both the auto and manual) enough to make advantage of extra gears and having the ratios closer to help the engine stay in peak power.
At the end of the day, Toyota is a business, and if offering an auto helps it sell more cars then that's great. Still having a manual to pick from should keep the enthusiasts happy. I can understand losing the 'exclusivity' of a manual only line up will upset the fan boys, but as long as there's the option for either transmission they shouldn't complain. Don't like auto? I used to be all "manual is better/best". All my cars have been 5 speeds. But then I started driving my wife's wrangler....and I could turn my music up and just drive. I couldn't really do that in my cobalt ss. I have realized the benefits of a good auto. I really like the golf transmission, I don't really need to use the paddles, just stomp and go. All while having the fender sound system pushing some bangers.
Why would you get upset if Toyota added an extra option so that more people get to enjoy a great car? Go buy the manual and don't gate keep the experience.
As a 50yr old dude with a bad left knee, this appeals to me more than the manual. I wouldn't track it...well I wouldn't track enough to worry about the car being an auto. If I wanted a track car it wouldn't be this it would be something less expensive and RWD. I live in Denver and do a lot of driving in traffic and I REALLY want a WRX STI but the shifting kills my knee so I'm in a Lexus IS350 AWD. Its a great car with power and reliability. Now that this car has the auto I may be looking for a new car.
Why? They don't even have a halo car anymore. They aren't interested in placating the enthusiasts, it seems like they're about to go the way of mitsubishi.
As a daily city driver...a GR developed auto is fantastic. Finally saw one at the local dealership and the trunk is a bit smaller than expected. Love everything else about it though
If I bought a GR, I would probably want manual just for the fun of it, but for my Corolla Hatch SE daily I got a manual just for the convenience. I could see a market for this for people who DO actually want to use a GR as a daily. My hatch is sportier than most with some mods, but I am really happy I got the auto due to driving in stop and go traffic and on the interstate mostly. Having that option for a fast daily that can be both a grocery getter and a track car for somebody that wants to do that makes sense.
I LOVE my ZF8 transmission in my BMW 328d and it's fantastic. Love it as a torque converter auto. Sure, I wish they made 328ds in manual, but the auto was good enough for me to be okay letting go of a manual.
One thing I am not looking forward to is now when these things hit the used market you'll have to filter out all of the automatic to find a manual. And let's be real, they'll mostly be automatics by that time. That's what I loved about shopping for my fiesta ST, they are all manual
I'd definitely consider the auto. I've owned 18 cars in 40 years, most of them with a stick. Then I had a great experience with a couple of 2-series with autos (the 228i being FAR more fun than the M240i that followed), decided I missed a manual, and bought a '22 Si. Great car, but two years in and I'm thoroughly over it. For a weekend car, manual without question. For a daily that sits in heavy traffic half the time, nope.
Should be manual only as the Civic Si and Type R have been. It’s great to see a specific model vehicle and just know the transmission & the spec of it. When I’m in my Si, I like people knowing I can handle a 3rd pedal and a shift. That is why I picked up the C5 Z06 too. No “options”.
Listen a manual car is great don’t get me wrong, I own one now a BRZ that I daily. I live in Jacksonville Florida so honestly it’s not very comfortable; it’s not a killer but I would enjoy the car a lot more if it was auto paddle shifter. The 10speed mustang is a dream to drive honestly… it’s got the ability to drift still, it’s faster in the straight line, it’s easier on the legs and hips idk to be honest I grew up a manual guy but these new 8-10 speed autos are awesome for the street.
I was thinking sweet. My wife always wanted a corolla. Now we can get one because she can't drive a manual. I get to tell her it's an AWD corolla for the winter so it's safer.
People are going to be in support of the auto until the take rate on the auto forces the discontinuation of the manual just saying it’s definitely a possibility
Don't fall for that, here in Brazil they start putting autos on the sport version end some years after pulled the plug on the manual all together, only the cheap 1.0 litter 3 cylinders economic cars are sold with manual transition now, I'm stuck with my 2019 entry level Civic (last year and only model sold with a manual transmission here)
Sounds like the paddle shifters are pretty responsive. Some vehicles with paddles have a terrible delay where there paddles are not really useable. Pretty nice.
I’m surprised not many people are discussing the paddles. If they are going through the trouble of putting in an auto trans and tuning it and touting it has quick shifts, why keep the same plastic paddles as every other Toyota. They couldn’t be bothered with spending a little more for some good feeling paddles, it baffles me.
Not sure how it is over in the US market but here in Aus the i30N and Elantra N have been dominating performance car sales (auto and manuals). The only things you see at track days and mountain runs are N cars. Why though? Because the price to performance ratio + track warranty has sold them. The GR and Type R are too expensive to compete in Aus. What a shame as I’d love to see more competition, but it’s fair to say Hyundai has won the hearts of most enthusiasts down under.

It's not the transfer case, it's the rear diff. Which the ultimate issue is something in Toyota's programming predicting it overheating. So not even aftermarket cooling fixes the issue.

HELLL NO! Cars worth 35k TOPS in my eyes....aint no way these r worth more than a Mustang GT or a new used Challenger Scat Pack SRT
I don’t know why they made an automatic version. It would have been cool to say it only comes in manual. Especially with today’s technology the car does most of it itself.
Then, this car would fall like the others, which were manual only. It is not a smart play.
@@pokedrago on god my opinion doesn’t matter my car is 21 years old and my e36 is 31 years old. I’m not buying new cars because I am broke. Bro I’m an idiot on the internet I’m aware that it ain’t smart business wise but I don’t care I think it’s cooler for people who want the car to have to learn an ancient art that is being lost.
Is it because you’re worried that people buying the automatic version will cause Toyota to discontinue the manual version?
@@faheemabbas3965 truth be told in my mind you buy a GR because you are an enthusiast. If you don’t know how to drive manual the GR Corolla is so new and filled with technology you can learn by driving it. I’m pretty sure the auto version is gonna help Toyota make money so they can continue to sell the manual versions and continue to innovate. I’m just speaking as a guy on the internet that drives manual and auto and I see the car as an enthusiast car it just makes sense that it would be more popular as a manual only. But again the auto will only help not hurt
@@E46_wagonlover Keep in mind these modern autos aren't the slush boxes of yesterday. Modern autos and DCTs shift so much faster than any human can, and they don't have too worry about hitting that dreaded money shift. As someone did with a GR, and ended up with a $14k shop bill.
Honestly it's pretty cool what Gazoo cooked up here. This new auto not only shifts fast, but it has a system similar that Porsche has in the new 911 PDK, it detects when you're going into corners, and adjust the shift points to maximize your exit speed.
Cant blame them; they need to reach the american buyer somehow.
I luv ❤Toyota .......Cape Town South Africa 🎉
Plus more of an aftermarket for it!
That trans shifts slow without the paddles
Wish you would've added lap times.
Fun street car but falsely advertised as track capable when the transfer case overheats in sometimes less than 10 minutes and you go into FWD. Ask me how I know… Civic Type R has been a much better platform so far. There is still some thermal management issues, but I’m not dealing with a car going AWD to FWD on its own…
It's not the transfer case, it's the rear diff. Which the ultimate issue is something in Toyota's programming predicting it overheating. So not even aftermarket cooling fixes the issue.
How wide is it with mirrors included
I mean the zf isn’t a dct and is amazing. Auto trans have come a looong way. Any overheating like the 23-24 MY
In german motorway 🛣️ none speed limit.
GR Yaris 1.6L turbo can do multiple runs without the car going flame 🔥.
But for GR Corolla 1.6L Turbo issues with internal that failed & that's why it totaled 🔥. There's no warranty coverage, news on multiple websites says Toyota USA ignoring the complaints & blamed the owner.
-
What about the Toyota USA GR Corolla 1.6L Turbo 3cylinder that bust into 🔥 ?
Are those issues still ongoing without any warranty? or recall? (*Yes*)
Or is it just US Toyota Quality issues to be blamed?
And also 2025 US GR Corolla didn't update the dashboard layout worst with that infotainment rob visibility.
Just look at the 2020 Toyota GR 1.6L Turbo 3cylinder didn't have any news that the car goes to flame 🔥.
2025 GR Yaris Improvement facelift & interior massive update from previous model.
Big change "the dash layout is you don't have the old infotainment sitting proud on the dash" it's actually 5cm lower & that means you get better visibility.
I just have a feeling that overpowered motor isn’t going to last, hope I’m wrong, it’s to pricey
Should start new segment called 'let's talk about it'
It will make a good parts car
Nice I’m going to buy one
