This felt so more real than reviewers afraid to say negative things about the car, and the CTR blowout is so real, I worry about daily driving a sidewall that small.
I swapped the 18x7 wheel from a sport touring with some 235/40R18's onto it for daily driving. Still low-profiles, but slightly softer ride and fills out the wells nicely
Fun note is the Corolla AWD is that it does not overheat. There is just a timer in the ECU that counts down during hard driving and when that reaches zero: AWD overheat. The sensor in the rear diff unit doesn't do anything, isn't in the liquid, doesn't change anything unplugged, doesn't change anything with a cooler. The ONLY fix I've ever seen was from Best Motoring for a Yaris episode running the same awd design. There was a UK company (not sure which) that has an ECU mod (piggyback system?) that could be added to the car, and then the AWD timer is bypassed letting you run it in awd for a long time no problem. This Best Motoring episode is 2 years old, so this info has been out for quite a while. But no one really talks about it ever and just keeps blaming the overheating issue which isn't really real. I don't know why Toyota programmed it into the ECU like that, and there is no bypass I'm aware of. There might be some fancy "pedal dance" kind of bypass or access mode in the software, but I've never seen anything. The only think is some add-on thing from the UK from some company unknown ot me but has been around for years as a support for the Yaris that first had this awd system.
While it is software trigger limit there has to be reason for that. Toyota don't want you to run these harder and longer perior doing so will definitely kill is within Warren period. All properly built high perf cars cool these fluids in diff that's the right way.
@@tommynguyen8620 No idea. Outside of the one Best Motoring video from 2 years ago where one tuner for the Yaris (Revolution) was talking about using some system from the UK to defeat the awd overheat cutout, I've never seen anything more about it. I have no idea what company was used, what the system is, or anything. I don't have a Corolla GR, so I'm not really vested to dig into this stuff, just merely stuff I've come across.
@@m4u5 No idea why. There's tuners that have been trying to figure that out, including opening up the system, testing the sensor, making custom parts, adding coolers, all kinds of stuff, and the result has been they have no clue. They're pushing cars up to 400-500hp and don't know why. It's just a timer that counts down in the ECU. That's it. The sensor in the back just sits in air, not even in the liquid and doesn't absolutely nothing. So there's an aftermarket that wants to do stuff with it, beef it up if needed, handle thermals if needed, and they can't bypass the problem. People also seem reluctant to just pull the ECU and toss an aftermarket one in instead to work around it. Folks want a work-around, ideally OEM and of course simple. But from Toyota's side, this is likely something like a gen 2 track mode or something. I don't know. Even Japanese tuners who have started with the Yaris GR we didn't get and have worked through the Yaris and now Corolla don't have Toyota coming out with an OEM bypass of any kind.
Something I heard one tuner say in a Savagegeese video is, "We're just waiting on Ecutek to figure out what the ECU is doing and how to disable it." Apparently the internal logic of the GRC/GRY ECU is extremely complicated and unlike most other Japanese cars, and this feature in particular seems very mysterious and buried deep. I can definitely understand people wanting to go standalone, but it's worth noting that a standalone ECU is illegal on the street basically everywhere, and often comes with some significant drivability penalties. The OEs put a ton of engineering ti.e into making sure the car starts and behaves normally on a -12 degree day with different accessory loads and throttle transients, and no one really has the money to hash those conditions out on a dyno when building a tune from scratch. Flashing a stock ECU lets you keep all those OE nuances, but then add the beans at high load. Plus, again, in a whole bunch of places you won't pass inspection with a Haltech or Megasquirt, and even in non-inspection places, it's technically a Federal crime.
The "pedal dance" was also a thing in the FR-S/BRZ 😆 1. Warm the car up, pull e-brake 3x (leave up on the last pull) 2. Depress brake pedal 3x (holding on the last) 3. Frustratingly repeat until TC and SC magically turn off 🤬 4. Don't turn the car off unless you want to repeat steps 1-3!!!
it's a thing with every Toyota and Lexus product Oh and every Honda and Acura product as well. Did it in my MDX a few times when I wanted to do more of a showy run at rallycross and get the rear end to slide out a bit
I really don't think people underrate it, it is just one of the ugliest sports cars. They took a Crosstrek's styling and moved it into the WRX, which is hideous.
I think the best thing bought gears and gasoline is the fact that they don’t scream at you when they talk, they calmly say what they need to say and that’s all, beautiful work
@ghrtt7 from what i can tell, it doesn't give you as much rear torque as you would want. Which then gives you less lock in the rear lsd, which gives you more understeer
The VB WRX is severely slept on, the looks turn a lot of people away, but the chassis is top notch, and the new FA24 engine is actually VERY reliable, slap some hood suspension (fortune autos) and some basic bolt ons, and you’re running neck and neck with the CTR for 5-10k less, absolute beast of a platform
@@BentoRunner but that’s where you’re wrong, the FA24 has fixed basically every and all problems from other boxers, oilling isn’t an issue, head gaskets haven’t been an issue in years, turbo is strong, no overheating, and if you’re really worried about it, slap and AOS on there and it’ll live forever
@@itsdakumori Thats why FA24 BRZ/86s can bare do high G right turns. So many blown up already. WRX guys are next in line. Stupid ass sideways design. Just build a K series. Which is probably by most BRZ/86 guys do s K swap after the engine goes.
I gave up after waiting 18 months for a GRC and bought a 2023 WRX. Saved myself 20 grand. (Canada) Didnt love the wrx at first until i drove it through a winter. Its the funnest car ive ever driven in snow. And nice to know thst with a couple grand worth of bolt ons i can smoke that toyota. Happy with how this worked out.
Very nice. I got a 2024 Ignition Red Limited WRX six speed for SIX GRAND UNDER msrp and 1% financing. It’s a great car. It’s my seventh brand new WRX. Considered the Golf R but it wasn’t worth the extra 15 grand.
It's not a bad little car! I'm impressed by the GR Corolla. With some fine tuning and mods, this car can be in race shape. But after watching the entire video, I love everything about it. Very real world analysis on these cars, engaging, and actual real time issues experienced on the track. Love his break down of each car while racing the crap out of it to see what's working and what's not. Each car is different and perform in their own respective ways. I think in the end, it's what you're looking for in a track car and what you want to expect out of it.
A popular and inexpensive mod to fix the Civic type R too stiff of a suspension is to install a ADS module from a Integra type S. That's how they should of came out from the factory.
Coby's WRX experience sums up mine. You can just send it and drive it exactly where you want it. It's underpowered for sure but it makes up for it by being so drivable. I love my WRX and being able to have fun for a fraction of the cost. Stock brakes suck tho.
That was very entertaining to watch! I have never driven a car on track and @75 years of age will not ever. I was still very appreciative of Coby's feedback and discussion while driving the cars on track in real time. Thanks for sharing this video with us all!
Coby murdered all the other reviews out there for these cars, completely unbiased professional opinion is awesome to see. Really liking this series and I think more of this stock kind of material would be really fun to watch moving forward, thanks G&G team!
It was bouncy because suspension was on full force rebound at R mode. It goes up but not open fast enough to be ready for another hit. So you have what we call in suspension industry "packing". Clearly seen on C camera mounted on fender when wheel is shown.
Great vid, thanks! Am I the only one here caught up on the fact the these 2 hot hatches can only do 2-3 hot laps on track?? (And not for brake & tire temps, but for actual engine & drivetrain components...)
GRC owner and I’ve driven with CTR on track after many times of miata and s2k driving. Those older cars can go all day no problem. The GRC oil temps get to 280 as quick as they go into fwd mode , and the CTR overheats. I don’t know if it’s emissions? The newer cars are much better cars but just don’t hold up on track.
When you do the pedal dance in the FL5 to defeat the VSC, it also allows you to run outside of +R mode while also allowing the traction/stability to be completely off (something you can normally only do in +R). You could go into Individual mode and set everything into +R (steering, engine response, etc) but the suspension in comfort and still have traction/stability off. It works for bumpy tracks!
Almost bought the GR but ended up with the FL5 a few months back. Much better interior, seats and overall feel. Plus the salesman at the Toyota dealership was lowballing me on my 2022 Bronco trade in, plus he was being kinda an ass.
yeah coilovers and even if they put stiffer sways are not going to do much, Subaru admits new WRX is built on SUV global platform to save costs, WRX is literally built on Ascent SUV chassis so it's already stiff enough, it also uses Ascent 2.4L turbo engine and the Ascent's open diff AWD drivetrain with no LSDs at all, just brakepad torque vectoring.
The engine is not an exact copy of the Ascent with upgraded valve springs and pistons. The engine is built to run at high RPM. However the stock suspension is fairly stiff and runs pretty darn well on track or on a rally course!
@@zombielivesmatter7294yep and you can literally take parts, including the turbo, off the ascent and drop them in. Honestly not a bad way to go if you need future engine parts.
@@elsicario7359 You keep posting this, but the global platform is more rigid than the outgoing VA chassis. It's not like they dropped a superior platform for a bendy "SUV global platform". If there's a criticism to be made, it's that Subaru continues to make this car appeal to masses and not the original fans of the car. That's made it larger and heavier over the years. The softer rear suspension is a result of them chasing the comfort of competitors rather than focusing on performance first.
Hi guys, owner of 2023 WRX here got it brand new. No the new FA24 is not going to blow up on the track with modifications. Mine has all the bolt on’s with a custom tune on 93 pump gas, top of the line Fortune auto suspension sticky tires and all around STI Brembo brakes. Cost on all that and the car $41,000 it has 390 horse 450 torque my car is running circles around type R’s GR Corolla and many other vehicles on the track. And I still paid less than those guys and I’ve had zero issues with the car and now it has 30,000 miles on it. So yeah, if you wanna have a fun car for a daily and a track weapon, WRX is a clear winner. With plenty of money, saved over those two cars and many other competitors, including some M BMWs Porsche, etc.
As a dude lives in Aichi a turf of Toyota, im really surrounded by these beautiful Corolla GR and I must say it’s a solid without known isssues. But I used to own a Honda and their engine is amazing, however I prepare the GR look.
Cobb Stage 2 is $1,900 and it is a significant bump in performance. It makes more power than the STI with quite a bit less money. That, some brake pads, and a baffled oil pan, and you're going to be embarrassing cars that cost quite a bit more. I still wish they gave it proper LSDs, though.
GR Corolla had traction control on the entire time, the car is an entirely different driving experience with TC off. The understeer feeling was definitely the tc in the car limiting power as the rear was sliding, thus causing the car to push the front.
FYI…there is a software update available through your Toyota Dealer for the Telematics System, to prevent it from calling Emergency Services on track. Bit of a known issue.
If the Wrx can have coilovers the CTR should have had bolt ons/tune then to make it a fair comparison… Or he’ll both in stock suspension and both bolt ons/tune
The CTR would be hard pressed to make any better laps on coilovers... they are setup super super well from the factory... I owned an FK8, and most people just ran a set of springs if they wanted a bit less ride height as the suspension setup would actually be worse with coilovers..
Just goes to show you there is no perfect car, especially out of the box… but with money you can certainly get close. Choose your Pokémon er… uh, platform wisely!
Love this video! Lately I was kind of thinking about selling my old Subaru track car for one of these 2 cars because they seemed so track ready from factory and just easier in the end. This video show us again that there is no perfect platform and they all need some tweaking. Thanks :D
Honestly, the plates were the highlight of the video for me when i saw them. The owner sliding in the "lol" on both plates is the cherry on top for me!😂
That was a lot of fun to watch. I hope you'll continue to do events like this one. I am wondering what the factory was thinking making these cars so stiff?
As someone who has had the luck of having both a GR Yaris and now a Honda FL5 and have had both cars on track at least 10+ times each and driven both extensively on the street. The FL5 is hands down the better car in every way , both on and off track , visually and in outright grip and cornering ability. It's important to be in R mode for everything except the suspension to get the best out of the car. After watching this Video it's clear the GR Corolla suffers the same fate as the GR Yaris which is Understeer at the limit (most AWD platforms perform this way unless corrected by geometry mods) , I would have thought Front and Rear LSD on the GR Corolla would of made a big impact but I guess you can't beat a proper suspension setup. Also the Michelin PS4 tyres is not on the same playing field as the Michelin PS4S , The PS4 is a 320 treadwear UHP tyre and the PS4S is 300 treadwear UUHP tyre , the latter being able to handle much more heat and having more outright grip and longevity especially on track before giving up grip and slowing down your lap times. I have had both tyres on and off the track and can attest to this as fact but check out Jonathan from Tyre reviews if you want to know more. For anyone wanting to get a GR Yaris or GR Corolla the best mods you will spend your money on is an Anti Lift Kit and braided brake lines and some camber bolts at the front followed by a proper wheel alignment to introduce more negative camber up front and neutral toe at the rear and that will essentially almost entirely eliminate understeer when pushing it but give a little bit of play at the rear. As for FL5 owners the best mod I have made to my car so far is an 18x9 wheel running 265/35 profile , it is MUCH more comfortable and compliant as a daily due to the lighter wheel with less unsprung mass the car feels faster everywhere , I fitted some Continental Sport Contact 7s and although they wear faster they are the best street tyre I've used so far. Shoutout to Chris on this video for being such a humble person and I appreciate his take on all these cars and showing everyone what they are capable of and what it might be like to own one and how they would handle on a track. This was a good video and I appreciate the style of the content.
WRX all the way. The base model is well tuned to run smooth on the roads and highways. With a mild tune it eats the other two similarly tuned. Safe internals under 450hp.
GR not setup right, needs to be in 50/50, track or sport mode: "One press in track or sport mode gives you expert mode, which seems to be a less agressive stability control program. You can also long press in either of those modes and go one beyond Expert. Select either mode, then hold the button down. You'll see expert mode appear then disappear, but the 3 lights in the tacho remain lit."
I traded my 2019 FK8 type R for a 2023 circuit edition GRC I don’t regret it the GRC fell more mechanical more raw more engaging to drive it is louder you can hear the turbo you can also hear the transmission power wise they both fell about the same only thing is the GRC you need to rev it more if you want to feel the power especially in 3rd gear it feels amazing I test drove a focus RS a STI and a Golf R GRC is a better choice if I have a choice between a FL5 type R and a GRC for the same price I’ll take the Honda but for 8 grand difference I’ll take the GRC plus is nice to have AWD
I mean I'd take the extra safety any day, except they still manage to make these modern behemoths more cramped inside than their 90s predecessors. I'll run my Arosa til it dies.
Just goes to show that purchasing a WRX and add a few mods and you’ll have way more car for your money!! Imagine an engine tune and short shifter as well 🤷♂️
the new VB wrx is impressive for the inexpensive cost and using the Forester and Crosstrek's global platform chassis and entire drivetrain from open front diff to open rear diff and brakepad torque vectoring. If Subaru had brought back the STI to pair with that nice new engine, it would dominate! Cars like the STI and EVO have front limited-slip differential, center DCCD/SAYC, rear limited-slip differential that would have let you taken it a lot more aggressive like you were saying about the Type R over the WRX and GR.
Thanks for some tips on running good times and VIR! Haha! Side note, I never realized there was so much side to side action on sway bars! Very cool to see that suspension do work!
yeah no surprise there, it's a known fact that Subaru openly admits that to save costs they built the new WRX on the SUV global platform so same chassis as Ascent, also exact same open diff drivetrain and engine as Ascent.
@@elsicario7359 Same engine too? It would be nice if the WRX was more free-revving but I guess a 6000rpm redline is "OK". It was a 7000rpm redline on my Australian-spec EJ20G GC8 WRX back in the day (and 8000rpm on JDM 2.0 STis, not that the turbo was sized to make power all the way there!).
@@TassieLorenzo to be honest it was time Subaru made a new engine, the new FA24 is nice, lots of low rpm torque that makes the Ascent and WRX good daily drivers. My GC8 STI revs to 8000rpm, great for track but daily driving gotta rev it out.

Such a good comparison. Too bad the WRX basically has complete custom suspension otherwise this would've been the perfect 3-way shootout. I love the fact there is absolutely no-fluff in this video. I stayed from the first second to the last. Excellent!
I actually was, but lets not be fooled here we all knew even with expensive coilovers the WRX was going to lose to the stock Type R. No matter how expensive coils put on WRX it's still front open diff and rear open diff using brakepads for torque vectoring. Not going to beat a stock Civic Type R that comes with front LSD. Subaru needs the STI model with front LSD, center DCCD diff, and rear LSD.
Coby. To clarify Toyota Sienna 2004-2006 came with all wheel drive. And man they get better fuel economy over just the front wheel drive variant. And they take the weather like a champ. Our awd Sienna is the vehicle that we take when our roads here in Canada are covered in snow and we haven't seen a snow plow for a couple days. 12-18" of snow and the van thinks it's out for a Sunday drive
It would have been great if the Type R's owner had provided some more info on suspension settings. You can easily set the cars Individual Mode to have comfort suspension with +R for the engine, steering, etc. This would have made a big difference and is how most people drive the car.
The message is just an early warning. When it says "AWD is overheated, switching to 2wd mode", its still fine to keep going, it's still AWD. It's when you see "AWD is overheated, 2wd engaged" that is when its actually overheated. It's just Toyota being over careful with its warnings. Also why not in sport mode with traction in "expert" mode? That's at least a second faster and less understeer.
At Willow Springs event my 2022 WRX with coilovers, sway bars, bushings, and 200tw and pushed 1:28 with a pro driver (not me, I'm not as good), it was in line with the GR Corolla times like you guys had. He then took our buddies stock STI just 200tw and he was much faster in the STI at 1:24. He said my new WRX has open front diff and open rear diff and uses brakepads for torque vectoring which he said is fine for a intermediate driver like myself. But he said for a skilled driver a LSD in front and back with the DCCD center diff is a league difference. I'm thinking a driver like you could have taken advantage of it.
well doh no surprise there, Subaru has admitted they built the new WRX on SUV global platform to save costs. New WRX literally built on Ascent chassis and even uses the same engine as Ascent and the Ascent's crappy open diff AWD drivetrain that uses brakepads only for torque vectoring.
At least you enjoy your car for what it is, I'm cool with that. I make fun of the VB kids that because the WRX is all they can afford they talk about the car as if it'll beat my GTR and beat spaceships 🤣
Let's go VB! Haha such and underrated car and I love that I own one 😎 I love Honda and the GR is an amazing car but you can't beat the WRX for the price. Such a fun car and so far it seems to be the best WRX ever made! FA24 is such a good engine.
would love to see Coby give a Golf R and Mini Cooper S JCW a shakedown. As these are 2 great cars in the hatch segment that get often overlooked. The mini especially. I never would have picked a mini as a brand I'd ever own. Especially as a midwestern country boy. But when my grandma passed away and she left me her 09' Clubman S (automatic sadly). I really fell in love with these BMW rebadged front wheel drive forgotten bastards. I learned a lot about driving fast and clean on that car. When i rolled it at my second rally event, I ended up buying a 11' Copper S, this time a 6 speed manual. I drove the piss out of that thing and enjoyed every minute of it. I only did tire and left the rest stock cus it was literally perfect. Also the first car i had that backfired and had audible blowoff as a stock vehicle. I blew the engine up on that one. Great car, not the most reliable engine BMW offered though. Now i have a 22' Cooper S, 7 speed auto (couldn't find a manual and it was a killer deal) and tbh its been fantastic. I still wish everyday i had a manual, but it been the only auto sporty car I've driven where i don't actually think I'm losing driving feel for the performance gain. Plus we have hella traffic here in NOVA and that 11' i had was a leg workout from hell on rt1 and I95.

The "pedal dance" was also a thing in the FR-S/BRZ 😆
1. Warm the car up, pull e-brake 3x (leave up on the last pull)
2. Depress brake pedal 3x (holding on the last)
3. Frustratingly repeat until TC and SC magically turn off 🤬
4. Don't turn the car off unless you want to repeat steps 1-3!!!
it's a thing with every Toyota and Lexus product
Oh and every Honda and Acura product as well. Did it in my MDX a few times when I wanted to do more of a showy run at rallycross and get the rear end to slide out a bit

I really don't think people underrate it, it is just one of the ugliest sports cars. They took a Crosstrek's styling and moved it into the WRX, which is hideous.

Hell yeah! Great video. As a GRC owner I will have to say, the car pushes and scrubs the front a LOT LESS if the traction control is actually off.
@ghrtt7 from what i can tell, it doesn't give you as much rear torque as you would want. Which then gives you less lock in the rear lsd, which gives you more understeer
Yeah exactly, should be driven in 30:70 mode as well
The VB WRX is severely slept on, the looks turn a lot of people away, but the chassis is top notch, and the new FA24 engine is actually VERY reliable, slap some hood suspension (fortune autos) and some basic bolt ons, and you’re running neck and neck with the CTR for 5-10k less, absolute beast of a platform
They definitely should've paint matched the fender arches at the very least. Looks pretty damn good when its done.
Still a dookie subaru engine. Gonna spin a bearing from oil starvation with that stupid as pancake design eventually.

Very nice. I got a 2024 Ignition Red Limited WRX six speed for SIX GRAND UNDER msrp and 1% financing. It’s a great car. It’s my seventh brand new WRX. Considered the Golf R but it wasn’t worth the extra 15 grand.
Love the WRX lurking in the back ground in the intro
Cool video. I think the largest driver of pace difference on the WRX is the tires. Yeah they are low end 200TW tires but they are 200TW tires.
Comparing cars with different tires is idiotic. Every motorcycle track review I used to read in the 2000s put the bikes on the same tires.
coby is one hell of a driver. he was pushing every car to its grip limit you could hear the tire control the whole video
Really appreciate Coby's insight and perspective. As a track person its very useful knowledge to note.

Man... that GR corolla gets better looking every time I look at it!
It was bouncy because suspension was on full force rebound at R mode.
It goes up but not open fast enough to be ready for another hit.
So you have what we call in suspension industry "packing".
Clearly seen on C camera mounted on fender when wheel is shown.
This was an awesome comparison! I never thought I'd be impressed with a Subaru's hot-lap-ability but here I am

M2 vs rs3 vs built golf r
Great vid, thanks!
Am I the only one here caught up on the fact the these 2 hot hatches can only do 2-3 hot laps on track??
(And not for brake & tire temps, but for actual engine & drivetrain components...)
Then they become overheated hatches
GRC owner and I’ve driven with CTR on track after many times of miata and s2k driving. Those older cars can go all day no problem. The GRC oil temps get to 280 as quick as they go into fwd mode , and the CTR overheats. I don’t know if it’s emissions? The newer cars are much better cars but just don’t hold up on track.
Chalk it up to extra heat generated from the snail in the engine bay vs n/a
That's why they are called hot hatches.
I thought +R mode still kept VSA on, albeit more relaxed vs other modes
The first mod for the Corolla should've been fire exstinguisher. #1 no question

That WRX sway bar shifts so much showing how much those fortune autos put in work
yeah coilovers and even if they put stiffer sways are not going to do much, Subaru admits new WRX is built on SUV global platform to save costs, WRX is literally built on Ascent SUV chassis so it's already stiff enough, it also uses Ascent 2.4L turbo engine and the Ascent's open diff AWD drivetrain with no LSDs at all, just brakepad torque vectoring.
@@elsicario7359 you'll be surprised how many VB owners have no idea their car is a Ascent chassis and engine and drivetrain 😅
Toyota used that 911 call info to void the warranty
with another 1k into the wrx, adding an ets intake, and a dmann tune... the wrx would most certainly at least keep up with, if not pass the CTR
but then for $500 you tune the CTR to 380hp 🙄
@zepm7184 have fun with that wheel spin
I was going to post something similar (also a 23 owner). FA24 is a beast and the VB in this test was a $1000 tune away from beating the CTR.

Kind of wish this could be redone with the WRX TR instead of a modified one...but the WRX caught my attention after this
Cobb Stage 2 is $1,900 and it is a significant bump in performance.
This. Obvious oversight
YEP, redo!!
To be fair, its absurd the dance you have to do to regain control over modern cars from the electronic nannies.

The GRC is a nice car but I agree…. FL5 is the way. Picked mine up for below MSRP a couple of months ago and I’ve enjoyed it tremendously since.
I love my VB. 400/450 with just ethanol tune, stock car. 500/500 with hybrid turbo and port injection. Still cost less than CTR and GRC.
That transmission is begging for mercy every time you spool up.
So far so good, stock clutch still at 29k.
If the Wrx can have coilovers the CTR should have had bolt ons/tune then to make it a fair comparison…

Follow up comparison with both on Fortune coilovers and no other changes would be interesting. They both struggled on stock suspension.

Thanks :D
The owners nuber plate game is on point!
Would be cool to do videos and add the times of your own cars like the S2000 (when fixed) and RX-8
wrx camber was setup for track, the other 2 for road, and you need the module from acura to fix suspension on type r

You can also long press in either of those modes and go one beyond Expert. Select either mode, then hold the button down. You'll see expert mode appear then disappear, but the 3 lights in the tacho remain lit."
I traded my 2019 FK8 type R for a 2023 circuit edition GRC I don’t regret it the GRC fell more mechanical more raw more engaging to drive it is louder you can hear the turbo you can also hear the transmission power wise they both fell about the same only thing is the GRC you need to rev it more if you want to feel the power especially in 3rd gear it feels amazing I test drove a focus RS a STI and a Golf R GRC is a better choice if I have a choice between a FL5 type R and a GRC for the same price I’ll take the Honda but for 8 grand difference I’ll take the GRC plus is nice to have AWD

the new VB wrx is impressive for the inexpensive cost and using the Forester and Crosstrek's global platform chassis and entire drivetrain from open front diff to open rear diff and brakepad torque vectoring.
