Let me tell you how cool the E39 540i is. I used to have one, and someone pulled out in front of me when I was doing 70 down the highway. Totaled the car. Later, I was in a drive-thru, and this cutie asked, "What happened to your BMW?" I told her but also mentioned that I walked away uninjured. The only thing she would say is, "Such a cool car." Dear James, About you saying bank robbers drive E39’s in Europe: There is an Interview with some German Police spokesperson who explains that the big heists all ended up using Audi RS6’s as getaways because they have the best suspension and handles best at high speeds. So bank robbers in Germany are going 200 mph down the Autobahn.
There was a period here in Australia where the go to getaway car was the Subaru wrx (gc8), it got so bad we were the first market to have a factory alarm/immobiliser (as an option iirc)
In west europe, Belgium, Netherlands and Germany the RS6 was very popular for their AWD, insane speed and good cargo space for the heist. The RS6 and also 4 were notorious for being stolen all the time. Insurance was crazy expensive
Straight up; foxbody hatchbacks are the best. A little more space, better engine sounds from inside the car, and more weight on the back really helps in the snow
Notch is structurally stronger due to no hatch flexing when you drop the hammer. This is the main reason why most good drag mustangs are notch backs .the car is also inherently a little bit lighter without the extra glass in the back. At one point in my life I owned an 83 GT hatch I can verify that the hatch flex like crazy when the tires spun.
E39 540i6 msport owner here! Great vehicle and platform. Had this car for 6 years, only thing that broke was the coolant tank, swapped to aluminum tank & alternator. Beside regular maintenance of course, brakes, suspension, rubber lines etc
If you are miata/roadster fixated and can't afford the real deal, the Saturn Sky/Pontiac Solstice are both insanely easy to get cheap and have engines with super readily available parts. Biggest issue though is having to change out the timing chain/guides every 80k miles
Inherited my grandfathers tackily red-on-red 93 F150 with the 4.9 I6 he had since new, and my father had a 95. When someone says "pickup truck" the 9th gen F150 is what I imagine everyone pictures, and it's still stylish. The 4.9 is absolutely indestructible, and I'd argue the best option out of all of them unless you're pulling a 5th wheel. Thanks for appreciating my baby James!
Just wanted to hop on to your comment to say I have an F350 with the 7.3 powerstroke. And while it is reliable it's more expensive to maintain. But it also gets better fuel economy. Downside of these trucks is that interior parts are getting harder to find.
Yes! I saw the outline of the pickup and new it had to be the same one I have! I have a 95 eddie bauer f-150 with the 5.0 V8, 2wd, and an 8ft bed! I've had to do a decent amount of work on it, nothing crazy, but I love it to death! And it only had 121k miles!
The SAAB 900i was my family's car when I was a child and I loved that thing. So reliable, too, it always got us everywhere, no matter the weather or how empty the tank was, and never broke down or needed repairs. Obviously a lot of bias and nostalgia, but I have never felt as comfortable and content in another car as that one 🔥
Unpopular opinion: anything older and boxier is a good car. Especially the boring ones like Toyota Camry or Honda Civic. Pretty good gas mileage, comfy, and easier to maintain. Definitely watch out for rust though, and there aren’t many left.
It's cool to be a fan, I've never done that before or experienced what that feels like. But imma keep clicking and watching, I'm glad you're doing your own thing and hope it works out for ya!
I recently sold my 80 series land cruiser. It was the best car I ever owned. I bought it for $9,300 with 250,000 miles. Drove it like I stole it. Jumped it at every chance I could. Drifted it through the mud. Floored it everywhere. Road trips. Camping. Carrying 12 people. Crashed it. Sold it for $12,500 with 274,000 miles. Best high school car anyone can imagine. I know they’re getting more expensive because I’ve lived it. I really hope I can afford one down the line. Literally never once got stuck. But I did upgrade lowk, 2022 ford bronco 2 door Sasquatch high package. Still super dope.
So glad you mentioned the Saab, it definitely doesn't get enough attention. You should check out the Saab 9000 too, amazing car with great power potential!
Is that the same powertrain they borrowed for the SRX for like... a one or two year only option? They offered a 2.8 turbo for a very short time. I've only ever seen one.
@@GrockleTD no worries, after reading my comment again, I understand I could have worded that more clearly, sorry about that! I should have been more clear.
My dad has a 1985 Mustang GT Convertible that is a true 1 of 1. It was inherited from my grandmother that passed away. She and her husband bought it new in Connersville, Indiana in 1985, and to this day, only has 25K miles. I will eventually be the one fortunate enough to get it in the future. It's a really special car, and real car dudes know what it is when they see it. Nice video, bud!
@0Tony1 he does drive it. Multiple times per week. His mom passed away 2 years ago, and she never drove it. Just sat in her garage for whatever reason. When she passed, he got it restored, and has been driving it ever since.
Another good option is any 80s or 90s Japanese minitruck. Hardbodies, Mazda B series's and izuzus are all great and reliable trucks that are often 5 speed i4s with around 85 horsepower. Slow, cheap and incredibly fun
No one is gonna think you're cool driving a stock Isuzu Pup or Nissan Hardbody. A lifted Hilux with cool body stripes and a roll bar in the bed, maybe, but only if they know who Marty McFly is.
That is some SOLID life advice at the end there..I know it's said in a funny manner, but man, the number of people who can't get those basic life skills down is scary! Good message, and great video!
Especially the Wagon CTS, Chefs kiss. I currently have a 2007 V6 cts poverty spec I bought from my grandma. Super plush and has 64k miles on it, pretty nice car if you ignore the creaky GM plastic interior
The Bertone coupe Alfa's have been my dream car since the early 2000's. Vintage Alfa engines were super advance and have a lot in common with modern Honda engines. All aluminum, wet cylinders, over head cams early mechanical fuel injection etc.
Those days are over... The rich (and unoriginal) have discovered that it is a "car enthusiasts" car and drove the prices sky high just so they can pretend they are car enthusiasts. See it all the time. Back in the day they were obtainable...

The classic 900 is awesome. This video does a great job of explaining its uniqueness. I’ve camped in the back of mine and always get compliments when I take it out for a cruise. I did a manual swap and engine rebuild, along with lots of upgrades, on my channel! 🇸🇪
I drive a ‘93 f150 and a ‘93 GT. Just put 31 inch Ko2’s on the f150 and it’s beautiful. It’s easy to work on, pretty reliable, and I always look back at it when I park. I can confirm gas mileage isn’t optimal. About $60 a week for me. My fox is my baby. It’s pretty light and has 300-ish ft/lb torque virtually stock. You drop a gear in that 5-speed and it moves. Also, that pushrod sound with flow masters is just unbeatable in my opinion.
This is the kind of car content we've been needing. I do these comparison in my free time just for kicks, but having someone present it like this is just tasty. Thanx man.
@@sidgreentherhymeofreason I dunno an actual built Sl can give you some more cred. Because no one is doing it. Granted it has to be more built than exhaust, wheels and tires.
Just bought an OBS ford a week ago. Best truck imo. Durable as all hell, simple, cheap to fix and maintain. Doesn’t get better than that. That generation truck it really didn’t matter what engine you had. The 4.9,5.0,5.8,7.3, and 7.5 all were reliable as hell. The E4OD left something to be desired on the other hand lol
I just got a clean, dent free 98 Tahoe. It was the last year of the square body with the rear barn doors. Every time I walk towards it, I always think how awesome it looks. Great list James!
That’s a obs the gmt-400 platform started in April of 87. Not sure if it’s the same for the tahoes but I know for certain that a 98 is 100% a gmt-400 platform. Because 99 was the first year for the gmt-800 platform.
In America you stand out if you drive a European car. In Europe you stand out if you drive and American car. Either way maintenance and parts are expensive since you have to source them from the other side of the planet. 😅
Actually, i think it's better having an european car in US as you have FCP with the lifetime warranty on parts and we don't have that in Europe. Also, FCP prices are not much higher than the prices in Europe, at least for BMW parts
The Saab 9000s i think it was, was a little monster. Used to race it uphill to the houses my friends lived in, that and the 740il BMW were the only ones that could accelerate up the insanely steep hill. 5.0 couldn't, Grand Cherokee couldn't, 289 fastback couldn't. All Trac celica kinda could. Good times.

I ended up with the 5.8, don't think you could go wrong with any of them.
That straight six could def pull a fifth wheel, won’t be fast, but it’ll do it
@ Absolutely it’ll do it. But if I had the fund to pick a truck to pull my 5th wheel, I’m going with a 7.3 PS
@ oh definitely. Better on fuel with the load, better torque, better gearing.
Just wanted to hop on to your comment to say I have an F350 with the 7.3 powerstroke. And while it is reliable it's more expensive to maintain. But it also gets better fuel economy.
Downside of these trucks is that interior parts are getting harder to find.
is everyone going to ignore the fact that Saab had "Swallows loads" in their ad...?
Yes
"Nothing on Earth Comes Close." :)
Just adds to the functionality.
As a Subaru guy, how could say something so controversial and so true?
The car’s coolness stems directly from our masochist spirit for enduring maintenance pain.

Did I miss something? Did James bring up the Saabaru 9-3?

The SAAB 900i was my family's car when I was a child and I loved that thing. So reliable, too, it always got us everywhere, no matter the weather or how empty the tank was, and never broke down or needed repairs. Obviously a lot of bias and nostalgia, but I have never felt as comfortable and content in another car as that one 🔥
HE'S GOT THE MIC!

Hilarious. Seeing how he did the heavy lifting for Donut's rise, he deserves the parting gift.
Former owner of the BMW E39 here. The last one was made in 2003. 2004 was the year they introduced the Bangle butt cars. Nasty
I love that you’re branching out into different topics but I also love that you’re still doing plenty of car stuff.
Unpopular opinion: anything older and boxier is a good car. Especially the boring ones like Toyota Camry or Honda Civic. Pretty good gas mileage, comfy, and easier to maintain. Definitely watch out for rust though, and there aren’t many left.
Apparently I'm the only one who has been surrounded by people who think 50s 60s cars are cool. but everything else is ugly plastic junk.

2007-2012 Saab 93 2.8t with XWD (or the Turbo X variant) is a dream car. Huge potential for big power in a very stylish car.
The xwd performance was cool but you can’t get parts for em anymore :/
Is that the same powertrain they borrowed for the SRX for like... a one or two year only option? They offered a 2.8 turbo for a very short time. I've only ever seen one.

What's the point of having a cool car if you're not even driving it
@0Tony1 he does drive it. Multiple times per week. His mom passed away 2 years ago, and she never drove it. Just sat in her garage for whatever reason. When she passed, he got it restored, and has been driving it ever since.
Frickin love you james!!

Another good option is any 80s or 90s Japanese minitruck. Hardbodies, Mazda B series's and izuzus are all great and reliable trucks that are often 5 speed i4s with around 85 horsepower. Slow, cheap and incredibly fun
81 Hilux! Yuuuuhhhh

My Dad had a '93 Bronco from 93-03. I think we had to fix the power window regulators once every 3 years. They were always broken.

In America you stand out if you drive a European car. In Europe you stand out if you drive and American car. Either way maintenance and parts are expensive since you have to source them from the other side of the planet. 😅
In Europe you definitely stand out if you drive an American car. It does not make you cool though.
@leetorkington2904 in my experience it absolutely does. As long as it's not a Focus or Fiesta with a pop and bang tune
Fact everywhere you stand out if you drive a BMW or Mercedes
Actually, i think it's better having an european car in US as you have FCP with the lifetime warranty on parts and we don't have that in Europe. Also, FCP prices are not much higher than the prices in Europe, at least for BMW parts
