I’ve had my 24 GR Yaris automatic for a couple of months and close to 5kkm. I was super doubtful about the AT, having experience with Toyota’s and Lexus’ sporty automatics from the past, but it truly is fantastic. I’d compare it to a 8hp in BMW’s, speed wise. The gearbox programming in GR Yaris is rather aggressive. It rarely slips on the converter, during steady load it always keeps the revs above 2000 rpm even in Eco mode (about 2500-2800 rpm in sport more). The downshifts are immediate, it can kickdown multiple gears. It’s really impressive in mid range. I’ve noticed it was learning my driving habits for the first 1-2kkm, was occasionally sluggish, but now I can’t fault it. I just wish eco mode was more relaxed for everyday driving. I had my doubts about this gearbox, but it’s fantastic. I don’t think it reduces anything from the driving experience, if anything it helps to utilize massive mid-range surge of the engine. Love it.
"I’d compare it to a 8hp in BMW’s. " You mean the ZF in rear wheel drive BMWs? I understand the GR Corolla has the *same* 8-speed Aisin gearbox as in transverse-engine BMWs and MINIs -- i.e., the same gearbox as in the BMW 128ti, BMW M135 XDrive, BMW M235 XDrive Gran Coupe and recent Mini Cooper S ICE variants.
@@TassieLorenzo Oh no, I meant the ZF 8hp. I had experience with M340i and in the M2, and the shift speed, response and violence (if you will) is quite similar, if not better in the Yaris. That being said, I wish the 1-5 ratios were shorter. I’m not really sure if the UC80 is the same as the models you mentioned, it might be the same family of gearboxes. Though the M135 I drove had definatelly more sluggish response and slower shift times.
Just like when the GTI introduced their dsg, this is going to help to sell more cars. And more cars sold means a longer run of the manual version of this car as well. Every enthusiast car that has only been manual has had a hard time selling, especially within the last decade. The entire ST line at Ford were solid cars but limited themselves to manuals, while great for cred and "real car guy reviews", doesn't keep the lights on for too long.
No it wont. They cant make enough for the demand of only the manual car. Now they will divert some of that production to auto, so those who want manual are still screwed. All theyve done is reallocate away from those who want a manual. Granted, it makes for a much faster track car.
Huge fan of SG and thankful we have a connection to GRC designers. Last GRC videos we were told you would ask about the AWD overheating…. what a waste of an opportunity to push them on the AWD overheating question. No solution in 3rd model year ? I’m an “entry level” driver and 3 track days have lead to 5 overheating sessions. We finally had a chance to have an answer and didn’t even get the question. If it’s an ECU programming question why did they not solve it? If it’s a mechanical issue why are there no solutions?
I appreciate Toyota for making this car, so please don't think I am hating on this car. The #1 problem right now is not the car itself but the dealers that sell them. I keep hearing "Base Price Under $40k" No dealer within 200 miles of my home will sell you a GR with a manual for under that price. I walk into a VW dealer and can get a fully loaded Golf R with DSG for $47k and they will work with you. I have been in both cars. Say what you will about VW but the Golf R for around the same price point (realistically) is just the better value. Keep in mind that most likely 95% of these cars on either side will ever see a race track. Most if any may autocross the car but they will never see a race track anyway. The VW rides better, has more options as standard and is just more comfortable to be in and not to mention bone stock will hit 60 in 4 seconds flat. I am leaning towards the Golf for the dealer experience too. VW comes to me and right away will work with you. Toyota and the GR? This is what we are selling it for with our markup if you don't buy it someone else will mentality just really turns me off. That's been my experience thus far. Haven't bought anything yet, but leaning towards the VW.
I agree. The golf r is overpriced in my opinion but compared to the competition the value is amazing. The interior and reliability is miles ahead of the gr. The golfs take tuned really well too. I miss my mk7 gti, was a phenomenal car, but the cost to upgrade to an r was too much to justify for just adding awd
@@eppyz an F-150 lol. There's too much traffic around for any spirited driving and the roads are terrible for low profiles. My only qualm with it was android auto disconnecting and front wheel drive. It was hard to not spin the tires with a tune. If they made a golf truck I would definitely buy it lol
Toyota has by far the worst dealer experience that I've encountered. You can't even place an order for the car and spec you want like literally every other dealer lets you do. You have to place an allocation and "hope" the dealer can get the car in the spec you want. They don't even have the Toyota reliability excuse to fall back on with the GR Corolla compared to the golf.

So, they made all of these changes to make it a more “track-focused” car, but have not actually fixed the major, dealbreaker problem for track use, the diff overheating assumed value issue? This car has so much potential but this is a very silly thing! The engineer basically said that they designed a $50,000 car for first-timers to do parade laps around a track.
It's really bizzare. It can't be that difficult to fix. At least the Type R cooling issues can be addressed in the aftermarket...although I haven't needed to yet. I can run my FK8 9/10ths at Daytona for full 20 minute sessions without overheating. What's the point of dragging around an AWD system if it's FWD on track?
@@SlowDriverSean They could probably code it out! And promptly grenade the diff. Engineers didn't add that code to be a wet blanket. They know the mechanical limitations and added the fail safe in the ECU to keep the drivetrain from exploding. The GRC is still built to a price point. And frankly, you get a lot for the money, 300HP, four doors, AWD, and good brakes. Sure, it can only handle 15 minutes of hot lapping, but that's better than a lot of cars, even "sporty" ones. If you track a car regularly enough that you need more seat time, it's probably time to upgrade to one of the other GR vehicles and leave the GRC for daily driver duty.
I obviously don't know your situation, but when I was in high school Honda announced the S2000 was coming. I worked hard for scholarships and made sacrifices like living with my parents through college. I got into a job that was paying OK, had no family, and lived in a modest apartment. All this to say I made choices to limit my expenditures and was able to buy my dream car - a used S2000. It was $24k in 2006 money, equivalent to just less than a brand new base GR Corolla in today's money. I kept the S2000 for a dozen years. You may or may not be able to do the same, but here's to hoping you can align your trajectory to allow the purchase of a GR Corolla in the not-too-distant future.
I dig the fact this transmission is an option. I injured my ankle and can’t drive a manual anymore. I like the idea of this over a Golf R, which I’ve never liked the brake feel of. Now if it were only like $40k loaded and it’d be on my short list, $50k is just a bit too much for me right now.

The Golf R is not a particularly fun car to drive though. It's a bunch of work just to make the steering feel and throttle response OK, why VW tune it to be so numb is a mystery. [You can go into the steering module with VCDS and turn off the overly aggressive pull-drift compensation filtering called "straight line running" to get some steering feel back; while there is not that much you can do about the silly time-delay algorithm VW programmed into the throttle, throttle controllers only mask it really. Both of these things (the most basic inputs/outputs being "wrong") would annoy enthusiasts a lot.]

I own a 24 GRC Premium, and my 2 concerns are the 85 mph corpo side problem and the transfer case cooling problem. It isnt even addressed yet for the cooling side of things, which has been a big talking point of owners and enthusiasts alike since the car came out. Im surprised they barely talked about it at all themselves here. If it's not even reading real current temps, just an assumption, surely they could start there?
Its disappointing they didn't fix the diff issue. Sakamoto San pretty much said that it'll overheat for the same users. No sensor. Better cooling. I'll assume they re calibrated their model of load. Hopefully it means you can get a few more laps in.
A 3rd year build with a single issue of overheating and NO answer from Toyota on a response? Ridiculous that they can just dodge the question of a solution

I'd keep the old sway bar with the new setup. Sounds like diff overheat remains the same. Even though I've been racing a long time, I think its still fun on and off track - just needs more rear rotation which is easy enough to change.
My hope is that the upcoming GRMN Corolla will alleviate most of the cooling issues. I feel the 2025 model is more of an update to the transmission kind of based from what I am seeing.

The longer and more we can produce these awesome enthusiast machines the better. Might be my next daily but with a G70 it could be awhile.
To me, if you have a valid reason to not drive manual I get it. For me I'll drive manual until I die or lose limbs, but I don't judge others for getting an auto.
TBH its faster and it looks like they actually tried with this auto instead of just throwing in the same auto of a base corolla with slightly tuned shift mapping. These days autos only suck when nobody cared when they developed it.
Idk them adding coolers is their way of saying we knew it overheated from the start but released it anyways. Also, doesn’t sound like they fixed the overheating transfer case issue…I assume the auto will definitely have a less chance of overheating (if manual mode isn’t used) but still sounds like it wasn’t fixed. I guess we will see. Till then I’ll stick with my manual 24 GRC with fog lights 😎

Should just do Tarmac /Gravel /Snow…… and keep them always variable depending on the type of terrain used. And maybe even a FWD mode…. So you can use a spare tire safely
Not a bad update to this car. 0-60mph is around 6.7sec for the 8-speed automatic. I’d love for Acura to offer either their wonderful 8-speed DCT, or wonder 10-speed in the Integra Type-S.
Makes you wonder why it took so long for Toyota to bring the GR performance option. They realise the auto industry is in huge change and anything to extend current platforms is a win. I think at 50K this will struggle against the Golf R a more complete and proven package. But competition is always good.
It seems like Toyota is learning how to build Subaru’s SH AWD system from 2000s. Maybe Toyota should just work with STI and come out with a collaboration Corolla. It seems like they’ve learned so slowly. The rear differential tuning should be way more advanced than STI and Evo but yet it seems they just figured out. $45k car that barely outperforms a stock WRX
Still sounds like a solid vehicle. I would still go manual. I’m just about a year away from (most likely) selling my ‘13 wrx hatch and using those funds as a down on one of these-potentially.
Few thoughts on this. The gr corolla stands as a hallmark of Toyota deliverying an in house sports option. I think they accomplished what they intended. I do wish they would soup up the gr corolla more and then split a lower fwd lsd option with this motor and actually make it a civic si brawler. Arguably the civic si (forgive me chat but it's for the argument point) is the ideal babys first sports car. It's reliable. Simple. Under 30( (barely) and it has the driving dynamic attention from a team who cares about the driver/car interaction. Swelling to 50k isn't entry level that's almost day 2 or middle of the road. 50k is a mustang gt or a Nissan z. My thoughts anyways I'm grateful to see into 2025 we have some spunky ice cars. And we will still have them for at least a few more years
I want one of these with 17 snow tires this winter so bad. I suspect the transfer case issues would melt away in snow driving. Roof rack and some skis ftw!
2 nit-picks, piano black on the interior needs to go, scratches easily and is super reflective, and all GRC's should have the bigger wing they offer. No GRC should have that dinky small wing.
I have to wonder if the change from being a fixed 50:50 split in track mode is there way of not having to fix the issue of it going into FWD after a few laps. I think this may be the first 8sp auto I have ever seen where every single gear is an underdrive. Not even 8th gear is 1:1.
Is the civic type R overpriced as well? What car with this level of performance isn’t overpriced? Elantra N is your only go to and even Hyundai techs say it won’t last. The Toyota brand carries this car for sure. Hope they don’t let ppl down.

I'm bothered by the story that a GR Corolla owner's car caught fire under the hood, and Toyota allegedly denied any warranty coverage due to third party records that the car had exceeded 85 mph. 85!
40k for this is ridiculous. If subaru can sell you a wrx for low 30s... This is ridiculous. This car will get cancelled soon enough anyway when dealers still mark up this thing and treat it as this monolithic super limited edition car...
Except that in its market and price point it’s still an amazing option with the Toyota brand behind it. There’s no dealers sitting on these. Toyota is selling the limited numbers they make as fast as they ship them. If it’s canceled it won’t be from lack of sales based on the 2023/2024 builds.
There are *SO many corners cut* on the Subaru to achieve A low 30s base model! The interior with bargain basement rental car cloth, an engine lifted almost directly from the Subaru Ascent with negligible re-engineering, open front and rear differentials, the feeble Subaru 6-speed manual transmission instead of the Aisin 6-speed that used to come in the STi... When you get to a decently specced model with nice trim, Brembos, Recaros etc like the tS or TR it's mid to high 40's is it not (even though it still has the Subaru gearbox and not the better Aisin manual)?
I have only ever seen a single GR corolla on the streets in Orlando while I'm in my Type R and yet I see R's all over the place. @@aprtur I suppose that's true, but 30k to 40k still is quite the jump
Love it.
Also, no rear differential issues on 15-minute stints on a short, twisty racetrack! So maybe they’ve changed something they won’t communicate.
Correct me if I'm wrong, isn't the Yaris transmission a 9 speed dual clutch?

GTI is priced quite differently and gets more casual buyers. Not this
Does the 2025 GTI still come with a manual?
GTI isn't 49K starting out itll be a tough sell
Sadly, production will probably still be low, and now split 50/50 with 6mt and auto...

I dont track but this turned me off the grc so I went to fl5
It's really bizzare. It can't be that difficult to fix. At least the Type R cooling issues can be addressed in the aftermarket...although I haven't needed to yet.

It seems like Toyota is learning how to build Subaru’s SH AWD system from 2000s. Maybe Toyota should just work with STI and come out with a collaboration Corolla.
Simple.
