  • Simple test in both the 4" and 2" barrel of the Federal .357 Magnum Semi-Jacketed Hollow Point ammunition. It is rated at 1,080 FPS from a 4" barrel, so lets see what performance I get through the Jug-or-Not box! Always appreciative of any channel help :)

    Thanks for the video.
    I have been shooting 357 magnum handguns since the early 1970s. My 6-inch Smith & Wesson 357 magnum is my favorite handgun.
    When I searched for handgun ammo that I could use for protection from black bears, feral hogs, and wild dogs while photographing in the wilderness, I tested the following:
    1. HMS Bear Load (180 grain hard cast lead flat-nose)
    2. Federal Premium (180 grain semi-jacketed hollow-point)
    3. Remington (180 grain semi-jacketed hollow-point)
    4. Bitter Root Valley Bear Load (180 grain semi-jacketed hollow-point)
    I shot all four bullets into 1.5 inch thick pine boards.
    The HMS had the deepest penetration (lodged in the last third of the third board).
    The Federal Premium was second (lodged in the last third of the second board with a significant dent in the third board).
    The Remington was third (lodged in the last third of the second board with a slight dent in the third board).
    The Bitter Root was fourth (lodged in the first third of the second board).
    For comparison, I also shot a Western 38 Special (158 grain lead round nose) which lodged in the first board).

    Your recoil tolerance is more than mine. When I fired five of the Remington HTP 180gr SJHP rounds, I felt it from my J-Frame! I think I would consider that a woods load. For example, if I needed to kill a forrest with one shot.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The Remington HTP is rated at 1,145 FPS while the Federal is rated at 1,080 FPS. That being said Remington usually inflates their numbers a tad so I would say both are probably loaded the same. I don't recall what your J-frame is, but the Taurus fully loaded is 24 oz and with one round maybe 22 oz.

    Thanks for this. I was thinking of either getting a snub-nose .357 or .44 wheel gun as a back up carry. This showed me that the 2" barrel will be just fine for that purpose.

    • @GunSam

      When did the smaller less potent backup gun idea start? Why is the backup less of a gun than the main carry?

    • @exothermal.sprocket
      @exothermal.sprocket 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KailuaDoug I'm not accusing YOU, Doug. I'm asking the question. Most people have a very compact and sometimes lower caliber backup, as compared to their main carry piece.

    • @KailuaDoug
      @KailuaDoug 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lifted_Above - understood. Currently my main carry piece is a 45 caliber. I plan on upgrading to a 10 mm when I find one that I like that is more compact in size. I have a 10 mm now, but it’s a long slide, 6 inch Springfield and that won’t work for edc. I wanted to get a wheel gun for a back a piece just in case shit hits the fan. And I wanted that to be more powerful. So I was thinking 44 magnum, or at minimum 357 magnum.

    Heavy rounds for short barrels and light rounds for long barrels. Ligbt rounds have more gun powder to burn and long guns have more barrel to build up pressure (for velocity) as it is being sent from the chamber to the muzzle. I also use this logic when doing AR pistol loads.

    Sam out of all the years i've owned .357 magnum revolvers i never test fire factory 180 gn ammunition because i was told that it was too slow for any real expansion but it appears to do an average enough job at close range from your test, but i do see why manufactures use a 158gn SJHP as a standard heavy weight for the .357 magnum cartridge but i do see some potential for the 180 sjhp for a longer barrel revolver or carbine but with my 202 gn test i was able to get about the same velocity but it was a cast bullet say 1050 fps, this bullet would do great say in the old .357 maximum or .35 Remington rifle. another excellent video Sam.

    • @exothermal.sprocket
      @exothermal.sprocket 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think recoil is dependent moreso on powder quantity than most things. Like you said, a lower capacity due to bullet deeper in casing will mean less powder, and a bullet with higher inertia will give it slightly more time to burn before it leaves the barrel.

I have some 180 gr .lead RNFP 357 Magnum Bear Loads from HSM which I shot in my Henry Carbine and noticed at 50 yards had quite a bit of drop compared to shooting .357 Magnum 158 gr SJSP from Aquila which are fairly robust. It seems the combo of the larger slug and depending on the powder load appears to cause it to slow down over longer range. Stay safe and healthy, sir.

    Good stuff! Good to see you back out there and porting over old tests to the Jug-or-Not approach is good interim approach. These 180's are prolly much to mas mas mas for my considerations. Oddly this only popped up relatively early on Saturday morning having displayed/announced as being *uploaded* 20 minutes prior to my finding it... However yours and Fudmotin's comments are 14 and 7 hours old. Dunno.
    A project I'm percolating on that you might get some mileage and veiws over is experimenting w/cutting down and loading .38 Spcl components @ 38 S&W lengths and step-wise loading up to .38 Spcl-"ish" speeds out of Snubbies. I'm after the assurance and ease of total case extraction/ejection (the ext rod length vs case length issue on J-Frame snubs) and faster/easier speed loader alignment and push/release. I fig'd If I ever make any real numbers that these that I would use exclusively plus p labeled brass in the hopes that no one, years down the road, would test them in a old antique or top break. with everything going on I haven't been able to get out and test in any media, but speeds and pressures are looking good to a just a couple tests of different configs. Edit: I'm using that same die set LB4L sent you back in the day.

    Looks like a good load for hunting or critter defense. The 1.5x expansion is typical of hunting loads. I know a lot of people use 180's for bear defense, but usually hardcast or JSP. The 2.75" 8 shot Redhawk is intriguing in that regard, especially if i move to AK in the future. So is the 4" 41 Mag, since i do not have a DA 41😁. Al, have you tried the Winchester 110 gr loads? They perform pretty well with a little less recoil (assuming that recoil, flash and blast are the main issue). Also, the Hornady CD is loaded 100 fps or so below max, so that may help. I believe the 125 gr Golden Saber is as well. You might also try the Buffalo Bore 38 +p 158 gr LSWCHP (the old FBI load). These are known to hit 1000 fps from snubbies, with good terminal performance. I think Sam's recommendation of the Gold Dot SB load is a good one also. Lots of good ammo out there. Nowadays it mainly comes down to what you can find

      @@troy9477 I keep the the Winchester 110 357 loaded up as a home defense load enough power to take care of what you need to without having to worry about a bullet flying in your next door neighbor house it expands great and little recoil similar to a hotter 38+p. If I could find ammo right now I would buy a couple more boxes off general principal. Now if you got 2 bad guys standing one in front of the other a 158 or 125 mag would do better in other words overpentrate or if you have to go through say a car or wall then yea 158 or 125 non hollow will handle that. I fell in love with 357 cause it's so versatile. Second fav caliber is 22 and they are very underrated for cheap price and let's face it no one wants to get shot from a pellet rifle to a 50 cal lol now one will stop them faster but in real world scenario a 22 in the pocket is better than a 45 at home🤙💯

    I get better accuracy with 180 grain bullets (or 148 grain wadcutters) in both of my snub nose 357 guns. (Both are steel frame, not alloy.). I believe it is because those two bullets have more surface area to engage the barrel rifling and therefore stabilize better than the shorter (lighter) bullets. Moving the same ammunition to the 4” guns shows no difference in accuracy between the 180/148 bullets and 110/125 bullets. Thanks so much for doing the test.

I used to have an older .22 LR Taurus 94, and while it's quality was terrible at the time, it was actually one of the most accurate handguns I owned. I suppose if you have narrowed down the ammo in question and other ammo is fine I wouldn't worry about it, maybe if you can fire a round or two from like 50 yards or whatever your max allowable distance into some cardboard and see how the hole looks. Cardboard shows keyholes better than plain paper in my experience.

    Well...I did it! I bought another revolver.....SW 360 airweight. Scandium with stainless steel wheel and barrel. Already put a thicker grip on it so I’m good to go. What do you think of doing a demonstration of the light weight 86 gr. Fast copper polymer ammo. ARX is one manufacturer I know of . The box says it flys better with better lateral force dispersion ! 1650 fbs. 520 ft.lbs. I’m guessing these ammo. is more practical for long barrel accuracy ? !

      @@mattbrown5511 Yeah, I have a 686 Plus, they are so heavy. I have several large caliber handguns. But the one I carry now is a S&W 637 J-Frame Airweight. It weighs 15 ounces empty. It shoots 38 Special + P. "The old saying is true, the bigger and heavier a handgun is, the more likely it will be left at home". I cannot conceal one of those big guns in Texas in the summer. Even in the WINTER here, hard to conceal. So I usually leave the Big gun in the vehicle and carry the Air-weight "on me". It has an 1 7/8 barrel. Not fun to shoot, but lightweight and S&W Reliable 38 Plus P. That thing will do a lot of damage. BB

    Federal tailored that cartridge for medium game hunting. The expectation is that it will be shot out of a hunting-length revolver (6-9”) or carbine/rifle with a 16” to 24” barrel.
    www.federalpremium.com/handgun/
    All of the major ammo manufacturers have target, hunting and personal defense offerings for 357 magnum. Some 357 cartridges are further slanted toward varmint sized animals and others toward medium game, such as deer or feral pigs.
    www.hornady.com/ammunition/handgun/#!/ Hornady shows you icons to orient customers the applications for which the different cartridges were designed.
    You evaluate everything you test through a personal defense lens. Yes, you get to use and judge the products however you want. However, acknowledge their objectives were not your objectives when you conclude there are better rounds that do meet your objectives.
    Why would you buy Hornady LeverEvolution or Federal HammerDown 357 ammo to shoot through a concealed carry handgun?
    www.federalpremium.com/Ballistics-Calculator Using a ballistics coefficient of .210 and a projected muzzle velocity of 1485 fps from a 20” barrel, zeroing your height max to be +1.5” at 50 yards would expect the -1.5” drop to occur at 105 yards. That’s a decent maximum point blank range for a middle of the pack cartridge. Note that the 100 yard velocity is 1240 fps with 615 fp of energy left to drive the bullet into the target. That’s still more punch at 100 yards than your 2 & 4 inch revolvers developed at splash-back range. Hunting from 25 to 100 yards is where this cartridge does make sense compared to your personal defense best choices.

      If you load them really low they might impact very high, so if you have a gun that shoots low that would work well to fix it. Otherwise i'd personally use a fast powder and just load them the middle of the road.
