True, but it still did a nice job as far as damage and penetration. So as a defensive round in states where semi-auto rifles are banned, it would have still been adequate. That being said, .357 SP rounds are definitely nicer, but I could see where someone concerned with over-penetration would perhaps want to go with a .38 Special round.

@@ToolsandTargets I remembered that longer barrels mean more friction, and that means softer lead. Bullets that are slower out of pistols are going to be harder when they find their target, so less deformation and mushrooming. I think it's fully half of the equation. Keep up the good work, Sir. We're all very grateful for your efforts.

Very good video! And yes, I was not surprised a bit. The 180 44Mag is not designed for that velocity. Knew it was going to come apart. Unless going to a 240gr JSP, they're likely to come apart. One of the reasons I sold my 44Mag levergun.
The 357Mag and the 38hp, well, I expected both to do well. One reason why I cast a 160gr Keith SWC HP for both. Brutal on the hogs and coyotes that roam around my woods. Only thing meaner is my Henry Big Boy in 45 Colt. A 255gr cast SWC from a 20" barrel is a genuine hoss!

That 44 bullet was designed for pistol barrel lengths. The rifles extra barrel length made the velocity too high for that bullet speed, hence the coming apart issue. A 240 grain or higher bullet would perform far better from that rifle.

Nice test to perform! I agree with your assessment of all three rounds. The one that surprised me the most was the .44 Magnum. It hit the gel block with incredible force. Yet the depth was so shallow. While the .38 Special gets considerably less boost in performance compared to the magnums, I've noticed that(at least in standard pressure rounds) they are incredibly quiet. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your tests like this with the lever action .357 Mag.

Been looking for this test, seems like a soft point is the optimal hunting cartridge for 357 rifle. Great expansion and penetration. Would be curious how PMC stacks up against Federal or Remington in a soft point. I was a little surprised at the velocity of the PMC 357 158 gr, thought it would be a little higher. 20" barrel might actually be slowing it down a little, 16 - 17 inches seems to be the optimal length for velocity.

.38 Special ammo isn't likely or usually loaded with powders that continue to respond to added barrel length after about 16" inches quite like magnum ammo is. If you were loading your own however, there are powders that would give you a little more velocity potential out of longer barrels. Probably squeak another 50 to 75 FPS out of a +P 158 and still be "normal" for +P pressure. Something a Buffalo Bore or similar would do. Essentially getting low end mag revolver performance by using . 38 Special +P ammo in a carbine.

Not surprised on thst 185 grain 44 magnum bullet. It was far to light and traveling way to fast out of a carbine length barrel. It is better suited to pistol length barrels.
If you using a 44 magnum out of a rifle barrel, you need at least a 240 grain or heavier bullet. That should reduce the velocity a good deal and give better performance out of tour rifle carbine.

Hornady has the right idea, offering XTP Mag bullets for use in higher velocity application (lever guns, .460 S&W Mag, etc), but so far they haven't added the magnum XTP option to .44 caliber or .357 caliber, only .452 and .500 calibers. The XTP Mag bullet is supposed to be much tougher to deal with higher velocity impacts.
Lesser bullets typically blow to bits.

That .357 load is deer hunting class in a 20" carbine. The .38 Special is a home defense load by any measure. The .44 mag is pretty "iffy" on penetration for anything other than self defense. Devastating might be a way to describe that .44 mag. but not a deer or bear load.

Absolutely not surprised at all on any of your three loads tests.
At rifle velocities in that 44 magnum 180 grain as exspected would come apart. That light weight bullet was designed for pistol velocities in shorter barrels at around 1300 to 1350 fps and not 1900 plus fps.
A 240 or greater bullet in a 44 magnum rifle might perform better, get good penetration and hold together due to lower velocities.

As slow as .38 was kinda neat ..357 mag wow nice penetration and good expansion ..357 is just awesome

The 357 Mag 158gr JSP seems to be a good Home Defense round or Hawg & deer round with in 100 yds ..
The 38spl 158gr LSWCHP isn’t really a weak round.. as you mentioned in the video… a bit of misunderstanding on your part … the 38 alphabet round as it is called in certain circles is quite a performer in a 4 inch revolver .. the projectile does some pretty odd things inside a person when it hits bone ..
but as u saw .. even with the lower velocity.. basically performed similar to the 357 mag round .. I keep the 38spl LSWCHP round loaded in my Ruger Security Six
    As for the 44mag
I use nuthin less than a 240gr bullet

Unfortunately there isn't a lot of reviews on the PMC 44 mag 180gr, yours being one of the very few videos on it. I have the Taurus raging hunter 44 mag 8.37" barrel. I just ordered some of the 44 mag pmc. My brother has a chrono so I'll find out what it does with the 8.37" barrel.

Could you test the Federal American Eagle 357 Magnum 158 grain Softpoint from the Rifle ,from what I am seeing they are about $35.00 for a box of 50 rounds.
Might be a good relatively inexpensive Deer hunting round for the 357 carbine?
Heck, might be a good defensive round as well !

Brother, I am very curious about a couple of loads from a rifle. One is the .38spl FBI load which I think might be very interesting. The other is a weird one but I am a curious cat. That is the .38spl HBWC target load. I know they probably wouldn't feed but if you could single load it would be interesting to see what that soft WC would do at higher velocity.

I prefer the 357, I can always shoot 38 that are less expensive. I wonder what a buffalo boar 357 magnum hot load would do out of the 20” barrel. Thanks keep up the good work!

I got some pmc 357mag jhp in 150gr, haven't gave them a shot yet, box of 50 and have nickel plating casing and it looks like they may just match the bronze Pmc you're testing.. very impressive. Your video gave great detail and we enjoyed your personality along with it! You have some nice Henry's too. Mine is the big boy All Weather in 357mag/.38spl and doing research on the .38. Need to cycle +p in 158gr or more for the Henry and that made better choices for us to make sure we got the right ammo for wife n boys to fire out. Thank you and have fun making more videos! Try another ammo test with federal premium hammerdown 357mag in 170gr bhp? Would love to see a gel test on them as well please.. we bought 2 boxes and waiting for them in the mail. Be safe and walk well.

Thank you sir! Absolutely love these Henry rifles. I actually want to add an all-weather to my collection in .45 Colt since I don't have a .45 Colt or all-weather yet. Figured I would kill two birds with one stone. I'll see if I can dig up some .357 Hammer Down. I know I have some in .327 mag but can't remember what all .357 I do have.😎👍

@Tools&Targets I watch a lot of ammunition videos and we like yours! Clean fun, great details and no cussing! Most young adults testing ammo all have potty mouths and turns us off quickly.. we are trying to teach our boys about our guns and safety, but cannot let them watch a young buck shoot his pie hole off and disrupts the teaching. Thanks if you do decide to try out them hammerdowns.. Haven't seen much of being tested like you do. Ya them all weather's are some sweet rifles.. I'll be looking into a 30/30 for the Elk hunts and probably pass down the 357mag to the boys but we wanna make they use sound ammo...

That 38 special is probably a little faster out of a 16" barrel, because it is running out of juice before it leaves a 20" barrel. All in all, a great video though!
