    OMG.!!! With your Video I just fixed my toilet.!!! I was told by my Plumber I had to call KOHLER for a replacement part and/or call Lowe’s. It’s the weekend so I finally decided to Google how to fix a hissing toilet and clicked on your Video. With your help my toilet is fixed. Thank you

      Hi Sharon,
      Thank you for your comment and positive feedback. I'm so glad to hear your story. Isn't google and TH-cam amazing? Someone who has gone through the same trouble and diagnosed/fixed the issue can then help another person to quickly and easily fix a little problem with relative ease and zero cost. Thank you for supporting my channel. 🙂 Vito Casola - FIX IT Yourself!!

    So I changed the flapper based on another video and still heard the water running. I tried turning the knob which adjusted the water level but didn’t stop the leaking. Just when I thought I’d have to replace the valve I watched this video and took the top of the valve off and cleaned the rubber and plastic (which I doubted would work). Working perfectly and stopped all running water. Thank you!

      Thanks for the comment and positive feedback. I'm glad to hear that this helped solve your issue and that you appreciate how this saved you the hassle and money of calling a plumber. This is precisely why I posted the video because I went through the same exercise of debating whether I had to call plumber, but being a Mechanical Engineer I figured I should be able to figure out what is causing this and with a little investigative work I managed to resolve the issue and figured I should share this so others could benefit. Hi Melissa, Glad you found my video and it was helpful for you. Mine had the same problem, tiny piece of debris. You're so lucky you live in paradise. How is it there now with the pandemic. Last time we visited Hawaii was back in 1999 for our 3 week honeymoon (4 days in Oahu, 8 days in Maui, and a 9 days in Kauai). Still hoping we will be able to visit the islands again some day. @@mahnli Thanks Melissa, That's been the plan for sure, to definitely make it back to Hawaii one day this time check out the Big Island and I'd sure love to Kauai again and if time permitted Maui and Oahu. You're most welcome. The reason I started making these videos was to help people realize most things can be fixed by the homeowner if they just get a little guidance, enough to encourage them to at least try, so I'm glad to hear that in your case it did exactly that. Take care and keep the islands beautiful, it truly is a Paradise on Earth. Vito

    Thank you! I was on my way to bed and ask my husband if he had use the bathroom recently. I heard a hissing sound and when I lifted the lid I saw that water was still running and the hissing sound. Well it’s 3:30am here in the Poconos and there no hardware store open. So I suggest we shut the water off. We look at some TH-cam videos and came across yours. I showed my husband it and he did exactly what was in your video. There was some debris. We had an old brush. He popped it back in and boom it worked. We thought we were gonna have to replace all the guts which are like 2 years old. Thank you so much! Now I can go back to bed and rest soundly. Thank you!!!!

    Thank you so much for this video!!! I watched several on how to stop the toilet running but none of them offered the solution. You suggested cleaning the valve and showed how to take it apart. My toilet is American Standard, so it has a similar assembly. Lo and behold, cleaning the grit out did the trick. My daughter and I worked as a team (she's a nurse) and with tweezers and a dental floss gadget, we got 3 wee stones out of there. It felt like a medical procedure. :). No more hissing or leaking water. Thank you again!! Empowered? You bet!

    I just spent $500 to have the shut off valve replaced and new fill valve. Heard the ghost flush and hissing after the plumber left. I was very upset as the plumber told me if the water still runs then I need a new toilet. Googled this morning and found some debris in the chamber. No more hissing. Fingers crossed no more ghost flushing. Thank you!

      @@FIX-IT-Yourself I definitely still need to have the professional to fix the water shut off valve. That part was busted (20+ years of not turning the valve). It was like $200+ to fix the valve and another $200+ to replace the internal mechanism. I am just happy I didn't have to call them up again. I may have listened to them and replace the toilet. Yikes! Thanks for the video.

    I have to thank you for your video. You were the only ne I found exlaining the FILL VALVE, BUT...... when I was taking everything apart, I discovered something I had only seen one time. I had a "BUBBLE" in the yellow seal. I used a NEEDLE to puncture it and get the WATER out of the bubble which had been holding my seal apart from sealing. Of all thee videos about how to change the round valve in the bottom of the tank, NO ONE had indicated that the valve could be defective and allow a little bubble full of water to cause the tank to slowly leak. Thank you for taking the time to make your video. You did an excellent job.

    When I take the cap off it's spraying lightly underneath out of the top. Is that due to a bad gasket or is the entire assembly broken? It's night so I don't want to mess with it right now in case of emergency the stores are closed. I did remove the washer gave it a good cleaning and flushed water through the valve by turning the water back on and it still hisses and sprays. Thoughts? Can just the valve fill assembly upper portion of this part be replaced?

      Hi Moss, Thank you for your comments, it's really appreciated. I'm glad the video helped you fix your issue. I know it's not the toilet but just the smallest piece of debris that may get stuck inside the valve assembly under the washer and sometimes it will pass through and other times it will get stuck and cause the continuous running of very small amounts of water and you hear the hissing sound. I too was baffled when I first noticed hearing the sound. It was late at night when everything was quite and the furnace wasn't running and when I had to put my head close to the toilet I noticed the hissing and that's when I started exploring where it could be coming from. Anyway I'm glad my experience is helping others. Vito Casola - FIX IT Yourself.!!

    Thanks for stepping through all of the detail - I've done easy fixes on old-style toilets, but finding all of this plastic in a new one I was afraid I was going to break something just trying to make adjustments. (Same "hissing", the fill valve was refusing to close all the way even if I pulled the float up hard; sure enough, taking the top flap apart and brushing everything off was all it took.) Also thanks for the "just turn the water back on only a little at first" - seems obvious but it hadn't occurred to me and is a really good idea.

    Nice. I've replaced the generic fluidmaster kind twice. What I Noticed about those is the entire assembly comes out with the top cap. So it would be easy to just flush and brush it out under some hot faucet water lol. Good thing they are relatively inexpensive so I didn't lose out to much by just replacing them. Still good to know you usually don't need to replace the entire regulator.
    Another common mistake that causes toilets to run is shoving the rubber tube into the overflow drain instead of using some kind of clip that holds it above it. If you shove it into the overflow it ends up syphoning the tank water.

Before I viewed the video I was trying to see how the valve worked but couldn't get past taking the yellow cap off: didn't know how much force where to get it off without breaking something. Likewise the '1/4 turn to the left on the valve' to take it off. Better than trying to pry it out with a screwdriver :)

    Tip on cleaning the intake valve seats worked great. Although I didn't actually see any contaminant on either surface (poor lighting and I didn't want to separate valve from the linkage unless I really had to) wiping both sides of the seal with a cloth then rinsing with clean water has cured the problem. I suggest checking incoming water pressure. There’s only so much force available from the float. I found I had 90 psi at my house! Having a pressure reduction valve installed helped the toilets, the showers no longer feel like sandblasters, and water hammer arrestors now work.

      Hi Alan, Thank you for your comment. I'm sorry, but if that would have been the problem for me then I likley would have done that but since my problem was simple that's unfortunately as far as I needed to go. If my toilet ever needs the center tower repaired or replaced then I may consider making another video of that. Great thing about Google and TH-cam is you should be able to find someone else that had that problem and hopefully made a decent video showing how to fix it. Vito Casola - FIX IT Yourself!!

    I have three toilets in my house with the AquaPiston flush valves. They are sticking and running and I checked and changed the seals. The problem I am having is the piston gets caught on the inside part that snaps into the tank. It is almost like it is welded or melted together. We use no chemical cleaner s of anykind to make this happen. Short of replacing the entire unit, is there a fix and have you see this issue?

      Hi. Thanks you for your comment. That is very strange. I've never experienced anything like this. We also have three of the same toilets and only issue I had was with this one toilet making the hissing sound which I troubleshooted and corrected as per this video. If you do end up figuring out what is causing your issue I'd certainly be interested in knowing if and how you resolve it. Thanks for supporting my channel. Vito Casola - FIX IT Yourself!!

    Great video overall. Did I miss the part where you explain which way you turn the screw to raise or lower the water level? I think it's clockwise to raise and counter clockwise to lower? I think mine is just over filling. I will write back when I figure it out but I'm defintely going to clean it per your video, thanks.

    Hello, I hope you will help me. My KOHLER Highline Classic White WaterSense Toilet keeps running water. Could you advise me on what I might need to do to solve the issue? Actually, the toilet bowl itself fills up way more than it is supposed to fill. I really would appreciate any input because my husband with dementia was just placed in a nursing home (almost $5,000 a month), so I have no choice but to learn to do home repairs myself. I am overwhelmed...

    • @FIX-IT-Yourself
      @FIX-IT-Yourself  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good Morning Donna, I'm sorry to hear about your husband. Regarding your toilet is it the toilet bowl itself that is filling up too much or the tank which holds the water until you flush? If it's the tank then you should be able to adjust the water level height. If you remove the lid on the tank take a photo of the inside of the tank and email it to me at vmcasola@gmail.com and I will see what type of mechanisms you have inside. Then I might be better able to assist you. Vito Casola - FIX IT Yourself.!!

    Can anyone help? I paid someone to replace the entire innerts -taking the tank out- and it’s still makes the hissing sound from time to time (not as badly as before). So it should not have any debris to be cleaned, right? Since the valve is new. The flapper is new. Please help.

      @@FIX-IT-Yourself Not really. The factory installed the floater facing the back wall. So I was struggling and fighting with this damn thing for three nights ready to break everything. I finally moved the justable stem and the water hose in the tank and it gave me just enough room to pop out the gray cap. The reason why I was excited for your video it was the same exact toilet bowl same exact guts! So your video gave me that inspiration. When putting it back I didn’t put it back the way I found it I put it back the way it supposed to be in the middle towards the front of the tank not the back. Thank you again!

    I replaced the fill valve washer, its still making the hissing noise intermittenly, no leaking from the fill cap area.. maybe its the flush value O Ring causing the hissing? I will try also flushing the fill valve first.

    • @FIX-IT-Yourself
      @FIX-IT-Yourself  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Wendy, Thank you for your comment. I guess it could be but I would double check the fill valve area first and make sure to flush out any debris that may have gotten lodged into the rubber seal. Be sure to rub your finger all around the fill valve seal and flush the entire area, as I showed in the video, by putting a small empty margarine or yogurt container upside down and turning on the water to allow a good flush. Then reassembly everything and see if that cures it. If not and you did already replace the inlet valve seal then, yes maybe time to check the flush valve seal by lift it and rubbing your finger around the bottom of the seal and seat to ensure no debris is sitting between them. Good Luck. Vito Casola - FIX IT Yourself.!!
