Just want to thank you so much for sharing the trick with us where you don't have to remove the shaft. I wasn't able to remove the shaft because the nut holding it in place was stuck and in a weird angle where I couldn't remove. I ended up just replacing the top part like you did and it worked amazing! Thank you for saving me from having to call a plumber!
Great video. Clear, concise and accurate. I started having a hissing valve the other day as well and knew for sure I was going to need to replace the whole valve assembly. Nice to see other options about replacing the gasket or cleaning it. Super neat tip about only replacing the top portion of the new fill valve as I would normally remove the entire assembly from the bowl and that was always messy.
Thanks for the feedback! I have replaced the entire assembly with the base in the past, but I figured this time I would just replace the top portion. I wasn't sure if it was going to work and luckily it did. I shouldn't have waited so long to replace it, the water was spraying out and onto the wall and it bubbled up the paint, haha.

After watching the video I went and purchased the seal and also the new fill valve. Just like the video I tried the new seal and it did not fix the problem. Thanks for making this video. I took a pick and cleaned out the chunks, noise stopped.
Great advice Miguel. As someone who does maintenance, I would strongly suggest that the shank be replaced as well. Those too get sediment particles trapped inside of them. Thanks for sharing your methods.
If that shank has several years on it, I agree, replace it. In addition to sediment the rubber washer sealing it also breaks down over time. I only had a couple of years with it so I was confident in leaving the shank in.
@@ChavezDIY You can also replace the rubber washer without replacing the shank. Great video - thank you. I had this exact same sequence of "non-fixes" before replacing the top part of the valve :-)
Brilliant man! Fixed. Only comment is the water line trick doesn’t work for me. when i pour water on the bowl it basically flushes leaving very little water in the bowl.
You're welcome! I waited longer than I should have to fix it. The valves was spraying water out of the back of the tank cover and onto my wall. So my paint peeled off the wall right behind the tank cover, hehe.

Super helpful! I had mine changed out in 6 minutes! (Would’ve gone quicker, but the plastic ring was a tight fit over the bottom ridge, had a hard time with that.
Oh shit !!! When I always change these things, I take out the whole shaft too at the bottom of the tank. I did not know you can keep the existing shaft and just put the new top part of the fluidmaster on it.
I didn't know either, it was a lucky guess on my end when I was changing it out. Keep the shank and box in case that rubber gasket on the shank gets old and leaks.
Great to hear this was helpful! First time I had a hissing problem it was just debris, but this second time, when I made this video, I had a hunch it was going to be more. Cheers to quiet toilets!
Good to hear! I had bigger stressors than this so I put it off, haha. I kinda regret it since it damaged the paint on my wall from the water sprinkling on it.
If I could only get that clear plastic ring to move up on the old fill valve. Tried a few times to get it to slide up so I can swap out the parts without having to remove the shank, but no luck. Any advice on getting that stubborn ring to move up?
The ring is probably stuck due to hard water calcium deposits. I was able to do it by hand, twist it back and forth as you lift it up. I suppose if you can't move the ring up by hand, then maybe that's a sign you should just remove the whole shank.

@@ChavezDIY I just replaced my fill valve. I bought a new one in home depot... after i installed it, the tank was losing water slowly every 15-30 mins and i found out my new flapper was the problem... put the old flapper back and my tank wasn't losing water anymore! fixed it thanks!
I just replaced my damaged rubber valve seal after 16 years of toilet use to stop it from hissing. However, I'm noticing afterwards that lots of little black rubber pieces are floating around in the water inside the tank. Will my new rubber valve seal will be damaged again soon if I don't clean all that out?
I think you will be fine if you don't clean that out. The rubber pieces will just flush down the toilet and go down the drain. If you want, you can just take them out of the tank, the water is clean.
Miguel Thanks man the first one worked, it had debre, but I did want to ask for ur opinion, I too recently bought the Fluidmaster 400A and alone installing it, I turned off the water from the bottom empty the tank went to unscrew the valve pump, but the kicker is even after securing the water pressure soon as o unscrew the bottom hose water came gushing out would not stop, till it dawn on me I went outside to turn off the water lever, not the one thas outside by sidewalk since I live in a studio think these people did something that made for our water not to turn off directly when completely turning off bottom on toilet. So my question is isn't it supposed to turn off when I shut the main water line within side our home? Do you think I had to go outside to turn the lever? i mean it defeats the whole purpose of having the emergency shut-off line yes? so I ask for ur opinion? thanks again Amigo for the Hissing tip totally worked.
When you shut the valve that's a couple feet away from the toilet, it stops the water from flowing in your toilet. If you had to shut off the water line going to your whole apartment, then something is wrong with the valve that's next to your toilet. Could be that the valve is broken from inside and its not shutting off the water. Try to turn it in both directions and if it doesnt stop the flow of the water, then it needs to be replaced. To test to see if it shuts off the water, turn the valve to shut off the water, then flush the toilet and if the tank doesn't refill, you know its off.
@@ChavezDIY : LoL yeah i figured there's something wrong, when the I shut the toilet water off, and put the one foot hose in a decent size bucket, and when I saw it didn't stop, after well lets say I had to lay a big towl on the door to try an stop it, I knew this wasn't right, so I ran outside where the landlord has her washing machine and there's a Shut off leveler soon as I pull it down water stopped, I was also thinking I hope I don't have to go out the the streen on the side walk and turn it off from there but didn't go that far. I can't get the water to shut off. I think the knob is stuck in place (21 years old). Can you replace the toilet fill valve without shutting off the water if you do what you did and only replace the top 1/2?
You have to shut off the water because as soon as you remove the top part of the valve, the water will squirt straight up like a fountain. You will need to shut off the water to your whole place and then open a faucet to release the water pressure.
@@ChavezDIY Thanks, I changed it today (only the top 1/2 like you did), but mainly because everything else was too corroded to get off. There are a TON of bubbles coming from the bottom 1/2 when I flush the toilet (inside the tank, near the bottom part I did not remove) - not sure if that means anything. At any rate, now I have to figure out how to get teh water valves off and change them, they are GREEN and SUPER corroded.
The bubbles might mean there's an air leak somewhere. You can try sealing it by tightening the plastic nut that's threaded to the bottom half (the shank) under the tank on the outside. If that doesn't work, you might as well go ahead and replace the bottom half too. The corrosion can be removed with a wire brush or some plumber's abrasive grit roll, just take your time and be persistent. I use WD-40 or some PB blaster to help remove corroded threaded valves. I don't know what your valve looks like but if you're able to remove it, take it to Home Depot and the guys in the plumbing aisle can help you find the replacement.
@@ChavezDIY That is what I was thinking (air). I will replace the bottom half when I do the water valves, but I couldn't get it off, hence why I just did the top half like you. It is REALLY on there (21 years worth) of corrosion. I am not sure how I can get it off, I don't want to break the pipe coming out of the wall.
I'm getting a loud sshhhh sound after flushing while water flowing. Can hear throughout small house. Not foghorn. Not hammer. Any ideas. My first step is to replace tap at wall. It's a new toilet but old tap.
The house I live in was built in 1947 and I can hear the water going through the pipes when the toilet is refilling the tank after a flush. The noise stops when the tank finishes filling up. I think there are still some old pipes down under the house. I noticed that the plumber's that installed the copper piping from the main line and into the house left excessive solder in some joints and this causes turbulence in the pipes and maybe that explains I've had two pinhole leaks in the copper piping in the front yard. I have no plumbing experience, but I enjoy watching this youtuber, Got2Learn, check out this video: th-cam.com/video/FbkE0HhEHVY/w-d-xo.html
Mine has started doing that too, but we've just had our first 100+ degree days. Could be coincidence, but the water in all of our pipes is definitely hot to the touch. No hiss, no hammer, no leak, just loudish high pitched fluid sound. Not sure over here.
Great vid, thank you! But I have an issue...the top portion of my fill valve will not budge...I have a Western toilet with fill valve part # A1250430019. Any advice? I appreciate it!
If you can't remove the top by itself, just remove the whole top and bottom together. Shut off the water supply, then flush the toilet and the water will drain from the tank. Use a sponge to remove any leftover water in the tank. Then you can remove the whole fill valve from the bottom of the tank.
EDIT: i found the term, ppl call it a Phantom Flush since the water level goes down without flushing reall quick question, hope this reaches you as im about to order the parts tomorrow i shut off the water while my toilet was hissing, i havent flushed and i wanted the fill tube to stop spraying for the mean time until i bought the parts, however, i came to find the tank's level is low, obviously didnt refill cause the water is shut off, but does that mean it is leaking and going straight to the trap since i havent done anything to it?
The water may be leaking out from the flush valve, the large rubber stopper inside the tank that opens when you flush. The water that leaks from the tank to the bowl via the flush valve, eventually goes down the trap. To test and see if that flush valve is leaking, you can use food coloring or other colored liquid or powder, and pour it into the tank. Wait a couple of hours or overnight for slow leaks. If you see the coloring go down into the bowl area, then your flush valve needs to be replaced to fix the phantom flush.
@@ChavezDIY for some reason it never went into the bowl even though i did the water dye trick, i did mark the level with a pencil and i noticed it was going down very slowly until it emptied it way below i ordered the same one you had on amazon with a stopper on it as well cause of the phantom flushes
If you have a new valve and there is no debris at the top, then check to see if the water pressure is too high from the supply line. The valve coming out of the wall should have a way to open or close it. If the sound is loud, close the valve a little and see if that decreases the noise.
I tightened the water valve on the wall but i could still see the water lesking into the toilet and the water in the tank keeps dropping and filling up back again.i slackened the chain on the flapper properly and its a new performance flopper that came with the fill falve.i am messing with this thing the whole day.i put some powder spice in the tank to see if it would go to the leak but it didnt

Perfect video! Thanks

This helped me today. Thank u

Great video, thanks!

EDIT: i found the term, ppl call it a Phantom Flush since the water level goes down without flushing
reall quick question, hope this reaches you as im about to order the parts tomorrow
i shut off the water while my toilet was hissing, i havent flushed and i wanted the fill tube to stop spraying for the mean time until i bought the parts, however, i came to find the tank's level is low, obviously didnt refill cause the water is shut off, but does that mean it is leaking and going straight to the trap since i havent done anything to it?
The water may be leaking out from the flush valve, the large rubber stopper inside the tank that opens when you flush. The water that leaks from the tank to the bowl via the flush valve, eventually goes down the trap. To test and see if that flush valve is leaking, you can use food coloring or other colored liquid or powder, and pour it into the tank. Wait a couple of hours or overnight for slow leaks. If you see the coloring go down into the bowl area, then your flush valve needs to be replaced to fix the phantom flush.
@@ChavezDIY for some reason it never went into the bowl even though i did the water dye trick, i did mark the level with a pencil and i noticed it was going down very slowly until it emptied it way below
i ordered the same one you had on amazon with a stopper on it as well cause of the phantom flushes
To the point! Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! =)
Good job
Thank you! =)
Thank you!

thanks... i got so tired of this shit at 6 am i had to go look up a video lmao
Hahaha! I know what you mean, I got tired of it too!
Very helpful
Glad it helped! Cheers to a quiet toilet!
Thanks! Just fixed it :)
Awesome! Congratulations on doing it yourself!
I just installed a new fill valve and it keeps making these hissing noise like its running water every 3minutes or so
If you have a new valve and there is no debris at the top, then check to see if the water pressure is too high from the supply line.
Used the method of taking the cover off the top and broke one of the plastic clips that hold the cover in place. ☹️
Sorry to hear that. I'm assuming the cover still stays on with the broke clip. It should still be functional.
Nice.
😎😎
This just saved me $7 and a whole lot of cussing
Awesome!! 😁😎👍🏻
Fixed in 35 mins (including the trip to Home Depot) for $14.
That's awesome! =)
I don't know what the problem is and don't touch it
If something is wrong with the valve, try replacing it.
Thank you!
