You saved me $200. My plumber said that I need to change shut off valve and filling valve. You’re a lifesaver
That’s great! Glad it helped, thanks for watching!
Thank you so much, I'm a 66 year old Canadian woman who used to be a superintendent with 2nd hubby 30 odd years ago when everyone used the old fashioned ballcock toilets, I had a guess on how to fix this newer one but was being careful because I'm now a tenant in an apartment building, shortly after I began listening to your video I realized my guess was 100% right.
That’s great! I’m glad you were able to fix it yourself. Thanks for watching!
I went out and bought some parts for our toilet that was running. Then I saw your video. I tried that adjustment on my toilet and it worked. I will be taking those parts back, unopened. Thanks!!
That’s great! Glad it helped
Thank you so much for this video. I was able to correct an ongoing toilet issue . Without having to pay an expensive plumber, I am pregnant. I am a mother who works full-time. My husband is always gone due to military. Thank you for helping me save that money. God bless
Good for you! I’m so glad the video helped, thanks for watching!
Thanks so much for helping us save time and money with your free tutorial. I really appreciate your kindness.
You’re welcome! thanks for watching
Thank you so much for making the video, I couldn’t figure out exactly what was wrong with my commode or why it kept running. I didn’t know that you could adjust that handle.
👍🏻
I’m glad the video helped, thanks for watching! I have many other diy videos including more toilet repair videos if you’re interested
The hole under the flap also gets accumulation of water lime residue. If you scrub it and the flapper sits level, it will stop the running toilet.
Yes, definitely in areas where the water is high in minerals (hard water) will cause the problem you have described. Thanks for the comment.
Thank you so much! I can't believe how easy that fix was. No parts or tools required. I'm glad I found your video because the first video I watched had me taking the toilet apart, so I was happy that I clicked on the next one which was yours and learned all I really needed to do was turn the knob to lower the water line and my problem was solved. Keep being awesome!
Thanks for watching! Glad the video helped
Same with me, I thought I’m gonna have to call a plumber for sure until I found this video.
This fixed my toilet a few days ago! Thank
you! I got tired of dealing with maitenance people at my apartment who didn't know how to fix it. For me, it was lowering the thing on the left by turning that screw thing. Thank you!
That's great that you fixed it yourself, glad to help!
I love your terminology! The thing with the thing! 💕😂
its currently 3am and I'm watching because my toilet wouldnt stop running. I know enough that I can lift the float cup and it will stop. I tried that, it didnt work. in fact the float cup was already all the way up! I turned off the water for now so I could read up on fixing this whether it is a full fix or temporary. The float and fill valve had been replaced about 4 years ago, which good old Google says 4-5 years is pretty average. I had attempted to fix it then but lacked the proper tools and as luck would have it, something else, more advanced needed attention so we asked the plumber to do both things. I am tempted to ask a professional anyway but the costs are out of reach right now. I am confident I can fix this myself now that I have the tools and plenty of youtube tutorials to assist so long as the problem is the float cup. I am not sure if mine is adjustable but that is something I will experiment with in the daylight hours. Thank you for your video.
You’re right it’s usually the fill valve but could also be that the flapper is worn out or not seating properly, good luck!
Thank you as a woman this helped me fix my problem but when I opened the water ..so much started coming out so fast I got a little bit scared but luckily it stopped. Thank you again
Glad the video helped, thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for making this video, and for including instruction on the older toilet style! I was able to fix mine tonight! Thank you!!!
Glad to help!
Thanks so much! We just had a new well pump installed and the new water pressure must have been overfilling the tank. So, your first suggested adjustment to lower the water level took care of the problem completely! Very grateful for your help and just subscribed.
Glad to help! & thanks for subscribing!
Thank you so much for your simple, straightforward video. You helped me better than the last 3 plumbers. I watched a few videos, and yours was really great for me.
That’s great! I’m glad the video helped, thanks for watching
So helpful, detailed and filled with extra tips. Thank you!
Glad it helped! Thanks for watching
This definitely helped diagnose the problem! had sporadic running every couple minutes... was driving me insane! went out and bought a 10 dollar flapper and now its silent. Thank you!!
You're welcome, glad to help!
Great explanation and how to fix, Thank You!!
Thanks, you saved me some money. I fixed it without having to buy any new parts
Glad it helped! thanks for watching
Excellent! Simple! Effective! Thanks!
You're Welcome! Glad to help!
Thank you for helping me understand how to adjust the water level. I was living with a running toilet for about a month. I am not that handy and this tutorial was a game changer for me. Thanks Again
That's great to hear, glad to help!
Thank you!! I was able to get it to stop by turning the thingy. I had no idea that was there! We've been tapping the floater thing for the last month to make it stop lol. Thank you so much 🙏🏼
That’s great! I’m glad it helped, thanks for watching
Thank you! I appreciate your video! Thanks for posting it. The fill valve instructions here fixed my running water issue. I had to use a screwdriver to turn the screw. Adjusted it until the water was 3/4" below the top of the hollow tube. I had to flush it to see the water level change.
❤ I'm so thrilled this worked.
That's great! I'm glad the video helped, thanks for watching!
Thank you for the video! Just fixed mine right now! Turning the valve anticlockwise helped set the level so no more over running.
Glad it helped, thanks for watching!
Great video, Jensen. The refilling we get on one of our toilets happens about every 20" or so, and lasts for about 10 seconds. Now I know why! The flapper needs replacement. Thanks so much!
That’s great! Glad it helped
Thank you! My was kind of the second reason. The label you read that's inside the tank that talks about the warranty came off. And when I turned the water off and lifted up the flap how you explained. I was able to see the label got sucked down. Thank you for simply explaining that. And I also adjusted with water level it was right at the brim👍👍👍👍😁😁😁
That’s great! I’m glad the video helped, thanks for watching!
I barely touched the screw and it fixed it! Thank you!
That’s great! Glad it helped
Thank you so much! I’m a single mom & thought I needed to depend on my boys for help- nope- not with your wonderful easy help! 😉

This video Saved me! I was prepared to drop $150 to get a plumber out. I turned the fill valve screw counter clockwise like he said and just like that; it stopped!
Thanks for the tip to have water lever an inch below the flush valve
That’s great! I’m glad the video helped!

Brilliant video👍
Thanks!
Great video. My toilet is is: running sporadically after replacing my fill valve. I didn’t realize the flap could be leaking water.
I’ll check it out.
Thank you for the crash course.
Glad to help!
Fixed! Thank you!
Glad to help!
Thanks, first solution worked for me.
Glad it helped!
Thank you! My landlord once took 4 months to replace a screen and 2 weeks to replace an outlet that I use everyday! Now I don't have to call him about the toilet running!
Glad to help!
Thank you, that was helpful.

Glad to help!
Thank you!! Fixed it myself :)
Glad it helped!
Thanks man !
Glad it helped!
Thank you,
I managed to diagnose the phantom flush issue after watching this video.
Glad it helped! Thanks for watching.
Also another thing to look out for is the fill valve hose. If it's pushed into the flush valve too deep it will cause the water to keep running from the fill valve causing the water level to lower and intermittent running every few minutes or so. I had to replace my fill valve since the flush was so weak it wouldn't flush fully. Replaced it and forgot to keep the hose above where it should be, so keep that in mind when replacing the fill valve because it will cause the water to run. Now it works like a charm. A lot better than before.
Thank you! This was my problem exactly.
@@SquishyChameleon Awesome glad to help, it's something that can easily be overlooked if you're not careful.
Thank you! I fixed it!
That’s great! Glad it helped, thanks for watching!
Thank you for the video first solution fixed my problem ✅✅✅✅✅
That’s great! Glad it helped
thank you!
Glad to help!
Thank you @charliegone1652 for your suggestion with the flush valve being to deep. I brought it back up some and it stopped the problem of continuous water running into the tank! Thanks!
You can get black circular gaskets for the flow valve and replace them, instead of the entire unit. The top of those comes right off if you do a 1/4 turn counterclockwise. Swap the gasket out and done.
That’s right, the valve seal. I have another video on that. How to fix a hissing toilet. Thanks for watching!
I just cleaned the flapper, with a rag, it filled up normally. Have to wait and see if this does the job.mine only came on for 20 seconds once in a while, have to be in the bathroom for a while to see if it worked. Thanks for your help tho, plumbers want 129 bucks to come to your door, can't afford that. I bless u tube, its helped me do a few things myself! Love it!
Hopefully cleaning the flapper worked for you. If not they are pretty easy to replace. Thanks for watching!
this helped a lot!!
That’s great! I’m glad it helped.
Genius! lol... I turned the thing and it worked
That’s great! glad it helped
Thanks
Glad to help!
Counterclockwise spin helped me out, thank you so much! 🙏🏼
Glad it helped! thanks for watching
I got an American standard also doing the same thing. Edgemere model. I think it’s different than the one you got although Bowl looks mighty similar. Isn’t even a year old yet.
Just fixed like you showed. I foresee problems down the line though. The float is almost completely submerged before it comes up. Seems like it should be smooth going up. I could be wrong
Float could possibly be getting stuck somehow ie. if tank is insulated sometimes float touches insulation and slows it down or maybe it has a small pin hole allowing water inside float water logging it. Most floats are usually only about half submerged. Good luck!
@@JENSENDIY Thanks for replying. I installed this toilet this past Thanksgiving day (not a wise move looking back when your supply line wont shut off and is dripping running water and the previous hose from supply to toilet comes up exactly one inch too short) so there should be plenty of warranty left. I'll have to ponder what to do.
Again, thanks for replying.
4:15 Great video
NEW SUB
Question, is normal for water to periodically leak from that top black mechanism? I time stamped the video where you tapped on it. I gotta brand new unit, but it seems like every now and then some water leaks underneath that circular part up top for a second or 2.
Your homes water pressure may be too high. Sometimes that causes the leak you have described. Your water pressure should be between 50-70 psi. I have a video on how to lower household water pressure. Thanks for the sub👍
You were correct, it was the Flush Valve level that needed lowering, so Thank YOU!!
But, my plastic screw would only allow me to lower it about 1/4" with a screw driver. I did not want to break the plastic screw by twisting too hard. Any suggestions on lowering it further without breaking the plastic screw assembly??
I have another video, Fluidmaster concealed trap toilet fill valve replacement. You may be able to lower the whole fill valve assembly if it isn’t already but if the toilet has stopped running l would leave it alone if it’s 1/4 “ below.
We will leave it alone as you suggested. Thanks again for your great tips!!
Thanks so much bro. U helped me from getting robbed. Lol
Glad it helped! thanks for watching
Got it adjusted fill 👍
Glad it helped!
The best flapper is Fluidmaster PerforMAX Flush Valve Kit Red/Black Rubber at Ace Hardware.
Thanks for info. Confirmed its not the flap and that other part needs to be replaced. Adjusted to the point where the bobber was completely submerged and still wouldnt stop running until i tapped it a bit.
You could try taking it apart, l have another video (how to fix a hissing toilet) but sometimes the fill valve just needs replacing. Thanks for watching!
When you say to change the part of adjusting the float doesnt work do yoy mean the whole tube thing or just the top part?
Yes it’s best to replace the whole fill valve if adjustment doesn’t work. I do have another video, (Fluidmaster concealed trap toilet fill valve replace in 5 min). Meant mostly for skirted toilets and takes less time as long as you get the identical part. Good luck!
Counterclockwise on the screw was the answer. I tried both ways but was too impatient. Did counter and it was fixed. Total time. Maybe 30 seconds. Thank you
Glad it helped, thanks for watching!
I just replaced all, and still flushing every 20min. What else can be? Thank you for your video!
Sounds like a flapper issue, check chain tension, it should be slightly loose to allow flapper to seal properly. Hope this helps!
Thank you, help me fix my grandpa’s toilet
Glad to help!
can a sporadically running toilet be from the little leak from the valve turn on and off tap beside the toilet
No, this would not be the cause. It's most likely the flapper or fill valve but you could check the supply line from the shut off valve to the toilet tank as sometimes they leak and make it look like the shut off is leaking. Hope this helps!
Changing the valve would do the magic? By the look of it flapper looks good but not sure about if it has some valve seal underneath.
The flapper is what seals so sometimes it looks good but has a small defect where it seals to the plastic rim of the flush valve.
Do the floppers come in different sizes or are they all standard?
2 sizes that I know of, alot of older toilets are 2 inch & newer toilets 3 inch. If you measure the outlet under the flapper that will tell you. Or just take the old flapper to the hardware store with you. Hope this helps!
The chain that is connected to the flapper has started kinking. The flapper was replaced. Am I doing something wrong during replacement?
If this is causing the toilet to run then you may need to remove a few links from the chain. There should be just a little slack on the chain when the flapper is closed. Hope this helps!
Very useful, but I need to change it on the built-in toilet water tank, Much harder! :)
It may need the diaphragm cleaned or replaced in the flush valve. If access is a problem then you may need to do a reno, Good luck!
Hi, we've replaced the flucsh valve, and the flapper, felt the seal area, no nicks, cracks, and the toilet will still run, about 3 seconds every 15 to 20 minutes. any other suggestions?
Make sure the flapper chain has a bit of slack. What you are describing usually means a very small amount of water is getting by the flapper. Good luck!
Thanks for your video. I have watched several videos related to toilet water running but, I haven’t found one that explains what to do if neither of these solutions stop the water from running in your toilet. I have replaced the flapper twice; the first time I used a fancy one with an adjustable orifice to let you “dial in” the water level in the tank. That was a waste of money since I couldn’t adjust it and the water kept running. The second time with just a basic flapper as shown in your video, but water still kept running. And, yes, I did wipe the opening to make sure there wasn’t any buildup. Next I replaced the water fill valve and I thought that did the trick but, after the third flush, water started running into the bowl again. I tried adjusting the water level but still runs. I checked with a friend that builds houses and he said in needed to replace the entire toilet 😏
Any other suggestions to try before I tackle the toilet replacement; which seems excessive and toilets are very expensive nowadays. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
You may need to replace the flush valve assembly which requires removing the tank. So if you do that then you should replace the spud gasket & tank to bowl washers while you have it apart and inspect the tank for any defects. These parts are not too expensive. Good luck!
@@JENSENDIY thank you for your suggestion. Are these available individually without having to buy a toilet. My concern is that my toilet is 14 years old. I’m new at this so am just not sure if they are or aren’t.
@@frankcampos1251 Yes parts are readily available at hardware stores or online. If the water level in tank is below the top of flush valve and toilet still runs that means water is somehow making its way into the bowl. Other possible causes are too high water pressure for fill valve to handle or fill tube from fill valve not properly attached to flush valve. Hope this helps!
@@JENSENDIY thank you for your suggestions. Do you happen to have a video on the flush valve assembly replacement?
@@frankcampos1251 Not for the flush valve but if you watch my short 3 min vid on how to change spud gasket or how to install a toilet you’ll see there is a large nut that needs to be undone under the gasket. Get that undone and you’ll figure it out. Good luck!
