DOOM + DOOM II is now the more optimal way of playing if you want a remastered DOOM port. Unity was good but had bugs like the main menu still being controllable sometimes during gameplay, but the new D-DII port doesn't have bugs like this. It's also got way more customization like official mod support and options to turn on like Pistol Start and Fast Monsters. Definitely get it, it's even free if you own DOOM or DOOM II's Unity ports.
The PSX version of DooM was my fisrt PSX game, haha. I remember the shock of not hearing the familiar sounds of the original DooM when we first played it. Good times.
Because of this video I bought the DOOM classic collection on Steam. It runs super well and is on sale at the moment. Thanks for the Doom content Karl, it inspired me to play it (casually of course).
Karl, speaking as someone with no intention of attempting a speedrun, your videos are always super interesting. And personally I find your content just a bit more interesting than other speedrunning channels, not sure why.
I swear over the Playstation port of Doom. I have nothing but sweet memories of playing that game during the summers of my teenage years, time and time again. A very well made port that was, in fact, my introduction to ambient music. I still listen to that soundtrack from time to time.
Originally, I did not watch these Doom videos because I was not a fan of the game and did not know many of the strategies or mechanics of the game. But recently I started watching them and I have to say that these videos are amazing. The explanations of mechanics, strategies, and speedruns, are easy to understand and very interesting. These videos are amazingly edited and scripted, and this has become one of my favorite TH-cam channels to watch in my free time. Great Job!
The same dude, Aubrey Hodges, would also do the music for Doom 64. Since Doom 64 is a whole new game rather than a port it made Doom 64 feel even more unique, and I'm so glad that as of 2020 it's finally got a proper remaster as believe it or not Doom 64 is what introduced me to the series in the first place.
It's kinda cool seeing him mention the Xbox port. It's how I got into DooM and DooM 2 back in high school. I remember holding the left trigger all the time, it's not as bad as you think for normal gameplay. However, I didn't know there were cheat codes, or a secret level end on hangar. Now I gotta try these, thanks Karl.
9:56 You just reminded me of two games. 1. Scooby Doo: First Fright 2. Scooby Doo Om Swamps These two were my childhood, and a damn good one at that. Thank you Karl, you ARE an Absolute Legend.
When I first watched this video, I was a little bummed hearing about a great official source port on steam. A couple years back, I bought Doom on steam and it ran through dosbox. As it turns out, once this new, official version came out, I got it for free with my Doom purchase all those years ago. That was really cool of them. I thought I would have needed to buy it again.
Just wait until you find out that there's another new official release, with a bunch of new enhancements/mods/etc, which just came out a few weeks ago, and is also free if you've bought the games before. (=
Glad to see so much praise for PSX Doom, still the first thing I think of when I hear "Doom port". Still love spamming the super shotgun on the Doom 1 levels!
Doom 1 on psx was stunning. You missed one also great thing about the port. It was link up. Yes you needed 2 playstation s and 2 tvs and 2 copies of the game but it was well well worth it!
I never had a computer growing up so my first Doom experience was playing a friends copy on the PSX. Lovely game and port, but I do remember feeling ill after watching my friend play for hours. With all that spinning around. :p
Doom on PSX is (based on the gameplay footage in this video) graphically awesome. The lighting effects are immediately apparent, and even though they're primitive today, they look downright amazing for a console port of that time. I LOVE it. That said, the Saturn Doom port has its own history, not entirely unlike the 3DO port, and what I can't grasp is how supposedly the proper Saturn port didn't meet the satisfaction of id. Or at least it was something along those lines. I pray for the day that either we get a working version of the original port or someone comes along and does a proper port so many years after the fact, ala OptiDoom for the 3DO. Which, by the way, is a project that doesn't get enough love.
You should give em a shot doom 1 and 2 are solid games that still hold up. Especially with the unity ports. They're about $5 each if I remember right and you can buy em on pretty much anything, I personally recommend pc or switch. Mostly switch though cause it has a gyro aim feature and it's portable. And these ports actually have official support for some fan campaigns that they've allowed. So if you payed for just one you'd still technically get like 5-6 games because those campaigns are free to download.
It's really fun, the rerelease of the first game is just $5 on your system of choice, and it comes with a bunch of optional bonus mapsets that are really good (ditto for Doom 2). Just remember to turn off Vertical Sync (VSync) in options, as it gives you really bad input lag.
Glad to see PS1 Doom on your list as that was my introduction to Doom despite being maybe 5 or 6 at the time. To this day, I have never forgotten the ammo cheat - X, Triangle, L1, Up, Down, R2, Left, Left
Yep, totally agree. Doom 64 is a great game too, and, partly due I think, to it being an N64 exclusive, it wasn't given the attention it deserves for a very long time
I’m sure you’ve heard this before but as someone that has been through some of the most intense things life can throw at you I can’t tell you how much it means that you start off every video with calling us “you absolute legends”. It makes me feel better than so many “real” things. And I know you don’t know me and I only found this channel about 2 weeks ago but you have been a great thing in my life to distract from all the BS. You suck me into a world where the only thing that matters is shaving off seconds and I can’t thank you enough.
Using the mouse to move feels really out of place for Doom, and clumsy given the varied geometry of the levels, but I've tried using it for Wolfenstein 3D, and it can actually be really good there, it can really let you 'thread the needle' with doors, really fast and reliably.
My first doom contact was on the ps1. You should have given a sample of the sounds in the video, because it is just absolutely amazing. There is also a handful of exclusive levels, which adds A LOT of character to the game, specially the final ones.
Karl, a new Doom milestone had been achieved! JCD, is the first player to complete a Final Doom: Plutonia Experiment on Nightmare with 100% secrets in 1h11m39s after 2127 attempts! I just saw the post, i figured you'd be the kind of person to like those kind of news. Merry Christmas Legend!
Daaaamn that unity port sounds like a very good deal, thank god is cheap here in argentina where every steam game released nowadays is expensive as hell, I'll sure give your challenge a try! Thank you for letting me know of this new port, love ya
The Jaguar version is really solid and underrated. The unique controller allows you to switch to any weapon at any time directly instead of cycling through them in order, which is a big bonus. And of course the Jaguar version formed the basis for the GBA, 32X, 3DO, Saturn, and PS1 ports of Doom; the PS1 version was then the basis for PS1 Final Doom and ultimately Doom 64. Thankfully Carmack saw to the Jaguar port himself or the history of Doom might be very different.
I played the psx version a lot back then... and people underestimate how important the music was. That version was brilliant and that was one of the reason. The music just gave you anxiety while playing, with random screams, etc. No other doom had such a good music for the game.
Love your videos man, I am assuming you have probably heard 100 times over but I would love to hear you explain the Dream cheating case that is going on right now.
Ngl every time I see that intro in Playstation version I kinda tear up. My dad and me play this game every year and the nostalgia always hits me. Not only because this is literally the first game I played as a fricking 6 year old (which definitely didnt traumatize me) and what got me into games. I normally dont like shooting games but this version makes me nostalgic every time. Glad people apricciate this as much as I do
Fun fact. I bought the classic doom pack on steam a while back. Been playing mostly Ultimate doom, but stopped from january to October. When i came back and reinstalled, i thought i had installed something wrong, not realising this was the unity port. Now it makes sense.
I appreciate the Doom videos, but it'd be a nice breath of fresh air to see something super absurd. Like, a history of Souls runs or something. Something away from the N64/90s PC era.
I've never really cared about speedrunning, Doom, or any of that stuff until I've stumbled upon Your channel. Now I want to know everything there is to know about any Doom port there is. Really, really great videos, no matter what the topic is, You always present it in a very, very interesting way. And it's good to be called an absolute legend once in a while :D great job, I hope You'll keep them comin'.
I love Doom. Couldn't speedrun it but I do love the game. Sourceports are important to Doom in general, for speedrunning, modding and so on. The community is still alive and well to this day.
Bro thanks for allowing people to enter the competition through the pinned comment as well as going to the end of the video, it doesn’t even feel like a cheap way to get people watching the whole video
Doom 1 on the GBA lacks some stuff, which is a shame, but it's still Doom in your pocket, which was pretty amazing at the time, and honestly it's still fun. Doom 2 on the GBA has a few quirks, but it's also almost entirely intact, every monster and level is there, and the levels are actually not trimmed very much at all, so it's straight up Doom 2 in your pocket, which I think is a pretty great achievement for the modest hardware. The music also sounds pretty cool on the GBA.
@@BigHuskyGG "solid" isn't quite the right word for a game that can break in entirely new ways at any given moment, lol. even if you know about all the busted mechanics and bugs, places like the crisis city mach speed section can completely destroy even the most experienced speed runner.
@Karl Jobst : Actually, Auto-SR50 is not allowed in Doom speedrun. If you check rules : -using auto sr50 on sourceports that have it is NOT ALLOWED I didnt saw any categories accepting it yet
I don't hate it, but I really don't think it's that great, little variety and no melody. I think it works better for Doom 64, but I still don't find it great.
The reason the Saturn port was compromised was because John Carmack forced it to be. The coder of the Saturn port (forgot his name) originally got 60fps using the Saturn's own hardware to render everything. Unfortunately, John Carmack didn't like the texture warping, and for whatever reason, John didn't want the Saturn's own DSP chips to be used, either, so he forced the Saturn coder to use a column-based renderer with only the CPU doing everything. This is why the Saturn port runs so badly.
Hell yeah, the Playstation port kicked ass. Other than a few missing levels and no Icon of Sin, it's the best Doom port I ever played that isn't a sourceport for the PC. Glad I'm not the only one who appreciated the completely redone soundtrack as well. I love the original Doom tracks, but there's just something about the weird ambient noises on some of the Hell levels that makes the game feel so much more atmospheric. Yes, I know I already sang the Playstation port's praises on the previous video, but it's so good I felt like doing it again. It's a huge part of the memories of my youth, and I'm glad it's appreciated in the community.
I really love the doom videos, can’t beat a cup of tea, biscuit and Karl doom video, rock and roll. Please Keep them coming I respect how much research goes into these videos ! :)
Talking about Doom ports really sparks a place of passion in my heart that I was unaware of. Outside of Unity and DOSBox, I feel like there are five main source ports for PC depending on the compatibility level of the WAD you want to play. An oversimplification would be: for Vanilla WADs - Chocolate Doom for Limit-Removing WADs - Crispy Doom for Boom WADs - PrBoom+ for ZDoom WADs/PK3s/PK7s - GZDoom for ZDoom WADs/PK3s/PK7s on multiplayer - Zandronum Lower compatibility ports tend to be better optimized and more faithful, while more compatible ports tend to have more features. From what I've seen, PrBoom+ is praised for how well-optimized it is; GZDoom is popular because it runs most files; Chocolate Doom is often chosen as a faithful option; Zandronum has new features for multiplayer and is popular for multiplayer mods, and I like Crispy Doom; it has extra features compared to regular Chocolate Doom, so that's what I used to play most of the Classic Doom stuff, including SIGIL. Now I use GZDoom (to run higher-level WADs/PK3s) with configs to make it more Crispy. Moving on! PSX/Saturn Doom's maps I find interesting. There's a certain allure to something similar yet different. Doom 2 is mostly similar except for three levels getting replaced: Wolfenstein is now The Mansion. Grosse is now Club Doom. Icon of Sin is now Redemption Denied. ... Oh wait, and six other maps are missing: Downtown, Industrial Zone, Gotcha!, The Chasm, The Spirit World, and The Living End. Doom 1 is even more different, the E1-E3 maps are from Jaguar/3DO/GBA Doom, so E1M6, E2M2, and everything from E2M5-E3M6 are noticeably different. Tower of Babel is now Hell Gate, and Tower of Babel now replaces Dis; Hell Keep is 100% unrecognizable, and E3M2, E3M9, E4M5, E4M6, E4M7, and E4M9 are also all missing. Also, there's a new finale for Doom 1 in the form of Twilight Descends, The Marshes, and Threshold of Pain. I wish the new and changed levels would get ported to WAD format or even PK3, but I suppose PsyDoom is always an option. I can't exactly play the levels with, say, Combined Arms and Colorful Doom, but it's not like I was going to do that anyway. :P ... Yeah, I think that's basically it. Have a nice day.

Glad to see PS1 Doom getting the love it deserves! What a fantastic game.
Yeah, they cranked the atmosphere up to 11 in that version. Amazing experience for the time. It wasn't the first version of Doom I played, but it was the one I fell in love with.
I played the hell out of both the Doom port and the Final Doom port on my PSX. Absolutely perfect job done by the team on both games.
Yeah they nailed it! 🔨
What a fantastic port of 2 games
@@23Scadu It was the first version i played! To this day, the "actual" doom feels weird and cheesy. The nightmares 4yo me had were intense. Thanks dad.
I think it's really a fantastic thing that a creator/developer can just give away their game to the community to live on and evolve. I wish more did that.
i love how he opens every video with "hello you absolute legends"
I would pay Karl for a sound file I could load into my alarm clock so that every morning I wake up to "Good morning you absolute fucking legend!" Or Karl could also supplement his income by selling actual alarm clocks with this pre-loaded. Lets get this one going guys.
we all do :)
It's branding, but yes I quite like it too.
@@Sheridan2LT you take that back, this wholesome man thinks we're all legends
I watch these videos just for that.
So after almost 20 years i finally know why I was Always invincible in the Doom Port which came with the Doom3 Xbox Version.... I was Holding LT to Run and pressed the fire Key or Others and activated without my knowledge Cheatcodes.
Lol i never understood what all the fuze about Ultra Nightmare was cause of this! 😅
Karl! You're on an absolute tear lately and I can't tell you how happy I am about it. All of your videos are instant clicks from me and are always fascinating
who cares
I just wanted to say: Doom 64 is pretty good too.
Yeah, I was wondering why it didn't show up. There's even a PC Version of Doom 64
DOOM 64 isnt a port, is it?
DOOM 64 isn't a port! It was a wholly new DOOM game.
Well, so I hope we get the "Best It is Doom but it is not Doom" video
My bro just bought an og copy for my n64, psyched to play through it
DOOM + DOOM II is now the more optimal way of playing if you want a remastered DOOM port.
3:43 why is no one talking about the fact that his last name is pizza?
Right lmao. I thought Karl mispronounced Piazza but his last name is really Pizza

Wait what the-
Karl Jobst: "Hello, you absolute legends!"
Me: Ah yes, the famous line is said yet again.
ah yes the floor here is made out of floor
He said it so epicly this time. OMG
Never would have thought that there was good Doom ports after the last video
I think the 360 version of Doom is a pretty good port. Though I'm also bad at Doom, so I probably didn't catch any problems with it.
PlayStation was the only truly great one from the 90's.
Can't believe we are talking about doom after all these years
The PSX version of DooM was my fisrt PSX game, haha. I remember the shock of not hearing the familiar sounds of the original DooM when we first played it. Good times.
Ohh the sequel I've been waiting for came earlier than I could've anticipated
I too came earlier than I could ever have expected
@JJ J lol shut the fuck up dickhead
Because of this video I bought the DOOM classic collection on Steam. It runs super well and is on sale at the moment. Thanks for the Doom content Karl, it inspired me to play it (casually of course).
Karl, speaking as someone with no intention of attempting a speedrun, your videos are always super interesting. And personally I find your content just a bit more interesting than other speedrunning channels, not sure why.
Karl: "you should try to learn something new everyday"
Me: does learning about doom ports count?
I swear over the Playstation port of Doom. I have nothing but sweet memories of playing that game during the summers of my teenage years, time and time again. A very well made port that was, in fact, my introduction to ambient music. I still listen to that soundtrack from time to time.
Ever planning on talking about the port that was just a whole new game, Doom 64?
That's a sequel...
Great game, and every fan of Doom should play it at least once, but I wouldn't call it better.
Great Job!
I absolutely love the music in the PS1 port of Doom, it makes the port pretty unique all things considered.
Plus you can put your own music in the CD drive if your playing on a PS1.
Walls in Doom do not have a single dedicated job. They're integral in controlling movement, especially in terms of speed regulation.
9:56 You just reminded me of two games.
1. Scooby Doo: First Fright
2. Scooby Doo Om Swamps
These two were my childhood, and a damn good one at that.
Great video, really brought back memories seeing the PS1 port as that is what got me into Doom and 1st Person Shooters back in 95.
Never played doom in my life but I love these videos. They are so interesting
@@CRAgamer You can get DOOM 1, 2, 3, and 64 for only 9 dollars right now!
@@narnianninja4964 HOLY FUCK that's a steal. Too bad I already bought em all when they released lol.
Glad to see PS1 Doom on your list as that was my introduction to Doom despite being maybe 5 or 6 at the time. To this day, I have never forgotten the ammo cheat - X, Triangle, L1, Up, Down, R2, Left, Left
PSX Doom is still a brilliant game, and I for one love the dark ambient soundtrack.
Agree. I'm glad it got a sequel in Doom 64.
PS1 doom was considered by John himself to be a superior port, but he did say the PC version was better for controls.
Side by side Doom running on fast 486 is much sharper/cleaner and smoother vs Playstation.
The recent DOOM + DOOM 2 port that replaced the 2020 one is incredible too. I hope people run it too.
Using the mouse to move feels really out of place for Doom, and clumsy given the varied geometry of the levels, but I've tried using it for Wolfenstein 3D, and it can actually be really good there, it can really let you 'thread the needle' with doors, really fast and reliably.
Thanks for showcasing the PSX version! Anyone that speedruns this version is a legend if i say so myself ;)
Great video
- an absolute legend
My first doom contact was on the ps1. You should have given a sample of the sounds in the video, because it is just absolutely amazing.
There is also a handful of exclusive levels, which adds A LOT of character to the game, specially the final ones.
2:50 "so without futher a doom" nice
Karl, a new Doom milestone had been achieved! JCD, is the first player to complete a Final Doom: Plutonia Experiment on Nightmare with 100% secrets in 1h11m39s after 2127 attempts! I just saw the post, i figured you'd be the kind of person to like those kind of news. Merry Christmas Legend!
Waiting on Dream's one.
Daaaamn that unity port sounds like a very good deal, thank god is cheap here in argentina where every steam game released nowadays is expensive as hell, I'll sure give your challenge a try! Thank you for letting me know of this new port, love ya
pov: your waiting for the dream speed run breakdown
@Mr. Teton he’s talking about how Karl is gonna make a video about the dream situation
So entertaining to watch a 15 min long video with such an enthusiastic narrator, you can really tell how much passion Karl has about Doom
When I saw there was a VRDoom, I almost shot my .wad
This Doom speedrunning is so fun to watch and gives me motion sickness a bit at the same time
i only have time to be called a legend today, will be back to see the rest of the video later
Thankfully Carmack saw to the Jaguar port himself or the history of Doom might be very different.
hello karl waiting for your dream video coming from drama alert
I played the psx version a lot back then... and people underestimate how important the music was. That version was brilliant and that was one of the reason. The music just gave you anxiety while playing, with random screams, etc. No other doom had such a good music for the game.
Love your videos man, I am assuming you have probably heard 100 times over but I would love to hear you explain the Dream cheating case that is going on right now.
He already said that he's going to

Ngl every time I see that intro in Playstation version I kinda tear up.
My dad and me play this game every year and the nostalgia always hits me. Not only because this is literally the first game I played as a fricking 6 year old (which definitely didnt traumatize me) and what got me into games. I normally dont like shooting games but this version makes me nostalgic every time. Glad people apricciate this as much as I do
Awesome sm64 ports speedruns when?
Fun fact. I bought the classic doom pack on steam a while back. Been playing mostly Ultimate doom, but stopped from january to October. When i came back and reinstalled, i thought i had installed something wrong, not realising this was the unity port. Now it makes sense.
"Hello you absolute legends!" A great way to start any video!
It's very good!
I appreciate the Doom videos, but it'd be a nice breath of fresh air to see something super absurd. Like, a history of Souls runs or something. Something away from the N64/90s PC era.
Waiting for the dream videos.
Dream video?
I love Doom. Couldn't speedrun it but I do love the game. Sourceports are important to Doom in general, for speedrunning, modding and so on. The community is still alive and well to this day.

Bro thanks for allowing people to enter the competition through the pinned comment as well as going to the end of the video, it doesn’t even feel like a cheap way to get people watching the whole video
Play the gba version and its o.k for non speedrun purposes!
The music also sounds pretty cool on the GBA.
>currently 3.30am in australia
>karl uploads a video
i mean, people speedrun sonic 06, so it's not surprising that people speedrun broken and bad doom ports.
It’s only 2 ports that actually broken (or unfinished). 3do and Saturn. And to be fair no one care about it) SNES port doesn’t count)
sonic 06 is pretty solid for speed running though
@@BigHuskyGG "solid" isn't quite the right word for a game that can break in entirely new ways at any given moment, lol. even if you know about all the busted mechanics and bugs, places like the crisis city mach speed section can completely destroy even the most experienced speed runner.
This video: Inspires me to buy doom on steam

@Mr. Teton popular youtuber called Dream has been accused of cheating on his minecraft speedruns.
Jobst: Doom on GBA has never been broken. It's rock solid.
Carmack: *smiles*
Jobst: ...Because it runs on the Build engine.
Carmack: *smiling stops*
Am I the only one that hates the PSX doom soundtrack with a white hot passion?
Yes
I don't hate it, but I really don't think it's that great, little variety and no melody. I think it works better for Doom 64, but I still don't find it great.
Probably not
The reason the Saturn port was compromised was because John Carmack forced it to be.
An oversimplification would be:
for Vanilla WADs - Chocolate Doom
for Limit-Removing WADs - Crispy Doom
for Boom WADs - PrBoom+
for ZDoom WADs/PK3s/PK7s - GZDoom
for ZDoom WADs/PK3s/PK7s on multiplayer - Zandronum
Lower compatibility ports tend to be better optimized and more faithful, while more compatible ports tend to have more features.
From what I've seen, PrBoom+ is praised for how well-optimized it is; GZDoom is popular because it runs most files; Chocolate Doom is often chosen as a faithful option; Zandronum has new features for multiplayer and is popular for multiplayer mods,
and I like Crispy Doom; it has extra features compared to regular Chocolate Doom, so that's what I used to play most of the Classic Doom stuff, including SIGIL.
Now I use GZDoom (to run higher-level WADs/PK3s) with configs to make it more Crispy.
Moving on!
PSX/Saturn Doom's maps I find interesting. There's a certain allure to something similar yet different.
Doom 2 is mostly similar except for three levels getting replaced:
Wolfenstein is now The Mansion.
...
Yeah, I think that's basically it.
Have a nice day.
Ah I remember this.. it was such an honor for Karl to show my face in front of thousands of people 🙏 Doom will live on forever 🖤
