    Fun fact, one of the reasons that a lot of doom console ports runs poorly is because that except the enemies doom isn't a sprite game engine but a bitmap one(a abridged version is that they use texture and generate the images on the fly).
    When doom launched and even some time later there wasn't any big console that wasn't a sprite based console(where it's gpu was made to handle sprites) so porting to them was difficult

    • @solarflare9078
      @solarflare9078 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The 32X wasn't a sprite based one. The 32X struggles to get 60 FPS on certain 2D games because the background has to be rendered in 3D, lol. Probably explains the high framerate the 32X port had.

  • @SuperBucketbot
    @SuperBucketbot 3 ปีที่แล้ว +133

    For the longest time my only experience with Doom was the SNES port, and I know it looks awful, and is a slog to control, but something about that somehow adds to it for me. It's like how the sluggish tank controls of the first few Resident Evil games makes you feel more helpless. A single cacodemon felt like a huge threat, and (if I recall correctly) not being able to save the game further added to this.
    Nightmare seemed impossible, but trying to slowly crawl through this game as a kid on ultraviolent in one sitting was an amazing experience for me.
    When I play PC I feel like an incredibly powerful supersoldier, who the demons should fear.
    When I played SNES, I felt like an ordinary soldier, who was just barely able to scrape by these terrifying and dangerous demons, by being smarter, and a little lucky.
    Overall I acknowledge PC is superior by miles, especially for speedrunning, but I'll always have a soft spot for my casual snes playthrough.

      You think that's bad? 8 years before Doom, the most popular gaming computer was the C64. If you wanted to shoot scaling sprites at high speeds, you'd need a quarter for Space Harrier at the mall.
      It was the same year that Super Mario Bros 1 landed. Most of America didn't care...yet.
      8 years before that, the Atari 2600 was being outsold, 3-1, by Nintendo's Pong console. The Space Invaders port that saved them wouldn't save them until a few years later.
      8 years before that, none of the tech giants wanted anything to do with Ralph Baer or his brown box. Using machines to play games on a television screen? Sounds like bad sci-fi.
      Novelty aside, what can it do that a real table tennis set can't?

    13:57 fun fact: the entire DOOM soundtrack is just MIDI files, and they sound different depending of the hardware, since they include this almost forgotten piece of tech called "sound cards" (I mean, they're still a thing, ig, but now people just opt for their default sound card instead of a better one, like they'd always do in the 90s), so I suppose the 32x had a very low quality sound card

      Agreed! The soundtrack of that one (and the interesting combination of levels) means it must be covered by Karl!

      PS1 Doom has its own vibe. The soundtrack, slight visual changes and huge amount of levels make it still worth checking out in my opinion.

    • @Runie549
      @Runie549 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@therealpizzagirl Exactly. It, PS1 Final Doom, Doom 64, and Doom 3 are almost their own sub-series within the Doom franchise that lean more towards horror than action (though they still have plenty of action lol), and I love them for it :D

      Doom was the first game I played on the PS1, and is arguably still the best console port of the original game.

    I was hoping you'd make this video soon. Coincidently just last week I broke out Doom on the Jag and started playing it. The no dedicated strafe was annoying. I then bought a pro controller with X, Y, Z and L+R buttons thinking one of them would strafe. Nope, can't outsmart the system.
    I swear the resolution on Doom Jag better when I was a kid. Maybe I'm just used to playing on PC and 360 since then and I'm misremembering. Or maybe the non-HD big screen concealed some of the pixelation back then.
    In any case I was playing Doom Jag and thinking "I wonder if there are people who speedrun Doom on Jag or other consoles? Behold, what timing! Great video. Keep up the good work.

    For reasons I don't fully understand, the 32X port is my favorite version of Doom. It's probably related to my adoration of the console, but something about it is incredibly charming and I always end up playing for hours when I load it up.

    I was born in 1998, my brother and I played Wolfenstein 3D while there was still ADSL connection, he was operating movement and I was controling the mouse, it was epic and we beat the game. Fast forward to high school I couldn't install almost any exe file but could play simple emulators so I played GBA Doom on Informatics class 😁

    I know the story behind John Carmack not wanting to use the dedicated VDP 2 chip for the Saturn version, it could have come out so much better and would have probably trumped the PlayStation version. Console wise? PlayStation one is the best Doom hands down. It was Doom 1 and 2 combined and you also got ultimate Doom later on about a year or two later. Great soundtrack very ambient based and great little touches that make it just run very well. Of course it was based off the Jaguar code but that doesn't mean it lacks the action of the PC version because it is all there. Aside from just a few minor differences. I personally played doom shareware on a Pentium back in the day so I had probably the best experience but having soft hacked the PlayStation classic, one of my ROMs I uploaded to my USB was Doom. I'm extremely happy the PS1 version was not included in the terrible ports video. I can only wait for the awesome ports video! Excellent job Karl you are an absolute Legend! ( at least 50% of your legendary status is the fact that you, like me, also shred some guitar😉).
