      On Speed Demos Archive there was a lively thread for bounties. Oh about 7-8 years ago I posted a bounty for Doom 2 being young and dumb for the Doom 2 Ultra-Violence category at 500$ thinking it would never happen. Zero-master eventually accomplished the 23:03 you see in Karl's video so technically I owe Zero-master 500$ but he was nice enough to set it aside.

  • @Midgert89
    @Midgert89 3 ปีที่แล้ว +87

    I love these history videos. As a history teacher myself I love that Doom is one of those games where player contributions will be easily immortalized for decades if not centuries so long as technology does not regress. The DEMO file is really a fantastic tool that allows for a complete duplication of any one speedrun, and one that's easy to preserve aswell. It's similar with how vanilla professional starcraft can be watched in real time since some old tournaments in south korea used demo files aswell.
    Games like doom will endure where other titles will fade into obscurity. I mean who's gonna remember Overwatch or some COD record as clearly as one would a Doom record? Only Doom has a means of preserving gameplay in a away that's accessible and suitable for archiving. When battlenet goes belly up away goes any hope of salvaging first person sources from those "services" called games is gone forever.
    Doom on the other hand, is indeed eternal so keep at it all you absolute legends.

    • @DracXBelmont
      @DracXBelmont 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      while i agree with the majority of this comment, the idea that the history of these games is going to be impossible to document or salvage is just silly when everything is archived on the internet in some form or another these days.
      that, and, well ... overwatch doesn't have a campaign to speedrun or document, so the only history would be tournament matches *anyway*, much like blizzard's other multiplayer experiences, and the most famous and well-known of those are already documented on youtube or some other site.

    • @Midgert89
      @Midgert89 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@DracXBelmont Problem is there is still no way to fully restore entire gameplay sessions like with the demo files, other than large filesize video recordings. The quality of the source material for modern titles will deteriorate as companies invest less and less into maintaining the games they set aside.
      Sure games are more complex and there's other source material, but it's not quite the same thing as having access to an input recording precise down to the last frame.

    • @DracXBelmont
      @DracXBelmont 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Midgert89 Oh, of course not, but I'd argue that even Doom's contemporaries would be difficult to archive / restore gameplay sessions because Doom's demo feature is something that is only very rarely done, with Doom being the main one to do it well. So, it's definitely not something that's inherent to modern gaming, at least in my opinion.

      the issue with comparing overwatch to doom is that overwatch is continually updated meaning even if they had demo support it would be broken over time. if you look at TF2 they had to create an entirley seperate branch of the game that predates jungle inferno due to the rework of the pyro.

    You are THE FIRST person to give me ( Dashiva ) partial credit for map07 pacifist. So I thank you! It started as an argument between speedrunners. It isn't possible. It'll never be done. It can't be done. I provided evidence that with a properly timed and setup SR50 run, it was 100% possible due to the way the engine was coded, and then stx-Vile took that, and literally the next day made it a reality (albeit with a rocket jump twist, which is all his), because he's a beast. I remember fighting the passionate fight that IT WAS TECHNICALLY POSSIBLE with more "realists" and going to bed satisfied that I had made my point in a fight I had NO stakes in. Waking up only to see what he had just done. It was an amazing day for me. Not because my proof motivated someone to make it real, but because it actually happened. map07-pacifist was thought impossible for decades. To be fair, I could never have done it on my own. I was a speed runner, yes, but not in his category. So he gave me a unique opportunity to unleash a "I told you so!" on the speed running community that I would not have been able to obtain on my own. Karl, thanks for being so thorough in your research as to acknowledge my contribution here. It isn't to my knowledge well documented, and Vile never mentioned me in his text file with his run, so that was impressive to me to see all these years later. Big Fan.

    Sub 17½ is such a huge accomplishment, implementing everything nearly perfectly for the entire run. There are so many tricks these days and you have to get them all (and the game itself) right without even a single moderate screw up to reach that time. The record on Looper's channel is truly a marvel to behold and one should go and appreciate the sheer level of skill and consistent execution on it. Can't recommend enough.

    Karl upload s and it makes my day, I really enjoy the content, I love the history behind these awesome timeless games and the wonderful people that dedicated their time to it. Karl is a really good person player and content creator, he is humble and has no ego issues, he doesn't like to brag because he knows there are plenty of other people in the world who are pretty amazing too, he doesn't brag or act like he is the best he respects his fellow gamers and genuinely enjoys their achievements and is happy for them. Lol he did a video list of speedruns, and included himself on the list but never once said that it was him or mention much of the skill it required he kept it simple and if you didn't notice the name you never would have knew it was him and he also didn't fluff it up and make it sound like he was some sort of doom god lmao, great guy I love him, he actually IS an absolute legend!!

    My favorite thing about these types of videos is that they are like a documentary. Like, this is the same caliber as if there was a documentary on the history of Baseball pitcher's speed of throws and styles and how they changed over the century of the sport. The same type of niche appeal, same quality as any big brand documentary maker.

      Big documentary companies really missed out on this whole niche market, but with really popular games like Doom or Super Mario they could still get a huge audience. It's just that all the executives in charge of making the decisions are probably old and clueless.

    -The progression of the runs is astonishing.
    -He said "[insert player] would achieve...this run."
    -He used Unused Song 2 from The Flintstones after showing footage of the final run.
    -The final time shown in the video is absolutely fucking godlike.
    But this time, it's different. Because the other 2 videos like this (the one about The Chasm and the other one about The Slipgate Complex) had final times that physically cannot be beaten (32 and 19 respectively). This one however, looks like it could maybe eventually perhaps possibly even go below 17:00. Maybe. We'll just have to wait and see...

The problem is...I have medical issues that effect my memory and while I'm a damn good player there's no way I could remember all of those precise movements. I have however placed times in terrorist hunts on expert with my team in Rainbow Six Vegas 2 on the Xbox 360. The last time I checked we were still tied for first place but...we did it with only two players the other top 10 teams were full at 4 people. When we tied first place we were practicing and it...just happened. That's why we were not running a full team.
