  • Doom has one of the oldest and most storied speedrunning communities on the planet. Recently, a 20 year old world record on the very first level was beaten. In this video we take a look at the history of this level and the journey that made this new record possible. We also examine in greater detail the small details that make up this speedrun.

      It was only held that long because of the rule of using the ingame timer which counts full seconds. The original record was 9.91 seconds and a number of people beat it over the years, even down to just three frames over 9 seconds (9.085 s), but since the timer only counts full seconds they were officially tied with the record holder.
      Personally I don't like this sort of timing, precisely for this reason. Especially since we can trivially count the number of frames in the demo file for an exact time down to 1/35th of a second. In my opinion, if you beat the previous even by a frame, you deserve the record, instead of having to hit an arbitrary threshold of how much better you need to be to get the record (in this case, 0.91 seconds better).

      Well, it's actually just simple vector math. You just do player player x pos (or y) = velocity + (player acceleration * delta time). Delta time is the time between frames in order to keep updates constant at higher framerates. However, Doom is capped at 35fps so it uses a constant delta time, which is 1/35th a second.

    I have to offer up a little bit of technical information about why SR50 was not achieved for many years as well. It is due to the way computer keyboards read scan codes. There used to be, as far as I was aware, a technical limit. on computer keyboards, as to how many key down events could be read from the keyboard buffer at once. This used to be 3, far as I remember from my old Borland compiler, there was some very concise documentation about this hard limit on Windows 98 SE and DOS Systems. This limit was pretty annoying in emulation software, as an example, old versions of ZSNES included an "L + R + Start + Select" mapping, for the soft reset, because of this computer limitation. You couldn't run diagonally in some games and jump either, as this required "Up Arrow + Right/Left Arrow + Run + Jump" would drop either the Run or Jump key depending on which was pressed first. Upgrades to the computer keyboard standard, and the maturity of the USB standard brought about gaming keyboards with hardware driven capability to allow a computer to read more than 3 key downs at once from the buffer. DOOM will attempt to locate any and all keystrokes. It was written well. That is why it will respond to such a circumstance, although hardware limitations prevented SR50 from happening at the time, this is why the thrust bug was never patched. A hardware limitation exited at the time of the game's release that made the situation technically impossible until keyboard standard updates.

      This is entirely untrue. N-key rollover varied depending on the design of the keyboard, it wasn't a hard and fast limit. Furthermore, it was impossible to use anything other than a PS/2 keyboard for the first SEVERAL YEARS of Doom's life, during which SR50 was most definitely used, because USB keyboards didn't even exist yet!

    • @lupinedreamexpress
      @lupinedreamexpress 5 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      @@linguica Going to have to downvote you. Reason being the stock 3-key rollover was the standard bank data limit for interrupt 0x13h (keyboard) on both the 386 and 486 chipset. This was due to register availability being limited to 2 16 bit registers at the time the interrupt occoured in protected mode. (CX, DX), BX is used to adjust BP/SP and is never adjusted by CPU interrupt, AX is reserved to hold onto the carry for the accumulator. A maximum of 3 keys + shift flags could be sent via INT 13h bank return value. The stack remains unchanged, this is an old intel interrupt standard which has since changed. This was a limit regardless of PS/2 and USB standards (USB of which didn't progress until much later on). If you had a keyboard that could respond to more than 3-key rollovers, you most likely where running a terminate-memory resident driver that stuffs data through the interrupt or hooks it to emulate its presence and provides a compatibility layer to fit the standard.
      Bear in mind these keyboards introduced a software workaround to a hardware problem and as a result always introduced input latency to the equation (bad for the speedrunner, in this case)
      By stock standards, 3-key rollover was the limit. If you had a keyboard that had a driver, sure. I could tell you that keyboards free of the N-key scan code limitation where expensive. Perhaps a few enthusiasts had a hold of such hardware and driver support. Many of us did not. I was still on mail order floppy disks in that day.
      What I said is not "entirely untrue". I stated what the standards where. If you had access to these types of keyboards with proper terminate-memory resident drivers, sure, you could make it work. But it wasn't standard. I can assure you the developers didn't take into account these (non-standard) solutions to the rollover problems at the time.

      I was checking out comments as I had just heard about all this whilst adding random mods to these old DOOM games. I've been doing modifications for a long while now and used to think my mod would never reach completion. Though it's mostly frankenstein'd codes made from other modders put into a single package (thus why I could never truly release any of it for public use due to simple courtesy and respect to the original modders), it was never truly about being accepted by someone else or even making my name appear on a plaque.
      It was for me and me alone. These speedrunners you see in this video? Understand that these guys lost hours upon hours of their lives that they can never get back. Who KNOWS what they have or are still missing out on because of this hobby (or habit, depending on your worldview)? This is a very serious, personal adventure that one goes on. Maybe they are showing off. Maybe that makes them feel good. Wouldn't it you? To feel accepted? Some will do it for just that, but there's more to it than that, deep down.
      You did it for you and you alone. That's sometimes something that many people on this good Earth struggle to do. Often times (too many times, in-fact...), I see people constantly trying to please someone else and not themselves. It's nice you care about someone, but that's not why you were put on this Earth. You were put on this Earth to live, just as everyone else was. Living means doing. Doing means doing what you love. These legends you speak of are not that different from you and I and even though it's hard to think about...They once started right where every new speed runner is starting right now as we speak.
      My mod's nearing completion as we speak (though, with game design/game modification, it's never truly complete, just put on hold lol) and that makes me feel amazing. To think I came this far and learned as much as I did about coding. If I truly wanted to, I could maybe make my own officially released mod some day. No matter how small or big it is, it's what it means to you that counts. Never forget that.
