    This is a defect that Mazda refuses to take responsibility for. I have a 2013 cx5 grand touring. This is the only problem I’ve had with this car. You make it look simple. I know it’s not. I may try to tackle this issue. Not sure yet. Thanks for sharing this information. Subscribed

    Bill, your video was perfect for replacing the switch. 2 things I would add that I has trouble with. At 2:29, you have to make sure that clip (the one closest to the steering wheel) seats properly when putting it all back together. It did not seat correctly for me, and it caused the shifter sleeve cover to bind up when it was all back together. And make sure the CX-5 is in park when replacing the switch. I didn't, and it would not work correctly. Figured those 2 things out, and it's a perfect repair! Thanks for the excellent video!

    Been suffering from this issue for 2.5 YEARS on my 2014 CX-5 AWD touring. Solved it with $74 piece os spare part I found at my local mazda dealer. You saved me almost $200. Thank you. My car started doing it when at around 40,000 mile mark.

    Just ran into this issue,,,,I did not buy a new switch,,,,I simply put two small slivers of gorilla tape on the limit switch with the rubber bumper or it,,,,,when putting back in park ,shifter moves LEFT engaging that switch,,,,when the rubber bumper wears down to the plastic in will NOT engage...hence the gorilla tape,,,,but this video was awesome in my diag....

    • @bholtzhauser

      @Bill Holtzhauser worked flawless I might add,,,,,rubber bumper was completely worn/gone only in the center,,,,,I'm sure I could have made a new one from something, but sometimes simple is supple...keep it simple......thank you for the compliment my friend

      @shaneadkins4323 after looking at the part after I swapped it I came to the same conclusion. Wish I'd have known and wouldn't have ordered a new one. I'm wondering if you can put a couple passes of electrical tape on the shift handle itself to give it slightly more girth. Either way glad it's fixed but yeah the whole assembly probably doesn't need to be replaced, but just something to address that tiny bit of wear.

    Thank you! Video was perfect! For some reason though my battery died in the process even though it was quick and the only time the accessories were on was to put the shifter in a different position to move the casing. So after I replaced the part I thought I'd done something wrong because the car wouldn't start. I didn't think it was the battery at first, since it doesn't make sense the battery would have died. I went back through the whole process thinking maybe I didn't connect the wires right or had missed something. I hadn't. After a jump and a ride around the neighborhood everything was fine and it seems to be working perfectly a week or so later. Wanted to share in case others had a similar issue.

    This has been a nagging problem in our 2014 CX-5 for at least a year, but was getting worse (more frequent) lately and I was looking for a fix other than taking it to a dealer. While I was out of town recently my wife could not turn off the car, left it as it was in the driveway, so of course dead battery by morning. Your video was just what was needed, thanks so much for the help! The part was $55.95 (Amazon/Avondale Mazda), and it took just 30 minutes to replace the part, start to finish. No problems with the procedure, except that it is difficult to remove the electrical connector from the switch. I was able to get at the connector by rotating it so the connector faced to the right side of the car, and then depressed the little locking lever with a long narrow screwdriver.
    I see that the link you provided to Mazda regarding this issue lead to a service note that itself has a link to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration page showing this as a safety issue. And yet Mazda won't recall this inexpensive part and fix it for their customers, but allows their dealers to charge hundreds to fix the safety issue caused by their defective part. After this issue, and the failure of the rear differential with less than 60K miles (also a common issue with this model/year), pretty unlikely I'll get another Mazda in the future. (They did replace the differential but would not extend the warranty on it. If another one goes out now, my tough luck.)

    • @bholtzhauser
      @bholtzhauser  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am glad you were able to get "this problem" fixed up, I too had the issue one day that I could not get it to shut off all the way early in my experience with this and thought, I can just close the door and walk away and this will time out at some point and turn off... just like you though I came back to a dead battery. I am also disappointment in the way this and other things have gone with Mazda. I really like the car, but I ended up buying a different brand for my wife to drive around ;-)

    Awesome information. I fixed my 2013 CX5 in less than an hour. I bought the part on Amazon for $60 delivered from some Arizona Mazda dealer. The new part had a harder black plastic piece that contacts the shifter than the old one, so hopefully it won’t get chewed up again. Thanks again. Wow. Talk about building confidence. Thanks Bill (and all the commenters) you gave me the confidence that I could do this repair. It probably took about 45min-1hr and the step by step instructions you provided were spot on. Had a couple of short-lived struggles where you said it was tough: pulling out the part, disconnecting the plug, and holding on to the spring (which I dropped but figured out how to put it back on). Nonetheless, they were each overcome. One wish and a very tiny critique would have been to show how you reassemble the gear shift (I had to keep going back and forth on the video to see what I should do next). Overall, GREAT VIDEO! I am so proud of myself and so grateful to you and all the folks who shared comments of success. (BTW: labor charge to install was $140-$175)

      @@dereckrovarissr.3247 My guess is your light is burnt out or you might have jiggled it loose(or maybe not even plugged it back in, see 1:16 in the video) during this task. For a few years before I did this repair, I was driving around with a burnt our light too! When I took this all apart to replace the broken switch, I also replaced the light, I still have the 2nd bulb out in my shed, they would only sell them in two packs. The one I put in is still working :-) But I bet now there is an LED version.
      It is actually a much smaller job to just replace or check the light, you don't have to undo the whole center console, or take the shifter knob off etc. Just pry up the center piece around the shifter and you should be ale to access the light.

My other car is a 25 year old Acura Integra and I'm dealing with tons of broken plastic clips and other pieces right now, including parts of the dashboard. I had to fabricate an aluminum bracket to replace a broken plastic piece from the dashboard to hold the center vent stack a few months ago. I'm wary of how these newer cars will hold up in 20-25 years' time.

    • @bholtzhauser
      @bholtzhauser  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Mark, good luck, this shifter switch is a common problem, the heater core issue is a common issue but maybe not as common, I think it might be due to warm climates don't need to run much through the heater core. So it looks like you might be in a warm climate based on your picture anyway... so once in a while turn the temp knob to something other than max cold, just to keep things moving freely. No guarantee that will help but it makes sense to me based on what I have read. And if you have not had the error code for the temp difference between the two coolant sensors (CEL) PO11A I might even consider flushing the coolant ... even though Mazda says its not needed. But that brings me around to the automatic transmission fluid, Mazda says you don't need to change that either but for me 1st to 2nd gear shift was getting a bit rough, so I found how to change the filter and the fluid (put real Mazda fluid) and that ended up causing my transmission to whine... the wheel side shaft has a shaft bearing that is slightly offset due to a design issue in the housing and it too is a known problem. Unfortunately they are not "safety issues" so generally speaking manufactures are forced by the government to fix/recall safety issues but getting them to do a recall on non-safety issues is almost impossible :-( I still have the CX-5 but getting a new or rebuilt transmission if this whine turns into a functional issue I don't know if I will make another "video" or not ;-)

      Hi Brani1974, the part of the switch that makes contact with the shifter was made of softer material that breaks down over time and usage... and Mazda should have used better materials in the switch. Some people have creatively built that part of their original switch back up vs replacing it. WD40 would likely make problems with the original switch worse(speed up the softening of the rubber like material).

    Mazda needs to get this right. Similar issue on a 2024 cx5 Turbo Signature.

      Hi Jeff, that is the first I have heard of this on the newer Mazdas, sorry that is happening for you.

      @@bholtzhauser Thank you. A weird audio issue (apparently a long standing one with Mazda) in an otherwise terrific car (CX5 Signature Turbo).
      Haven’t found a solution yet, even from dealer.
      Waiting to hear from Mazda. We’ll see.

    That silver u shaped metal bracket is what gives the small wallet/change cubby structure and keeps it from falling into the shifter area. Random fact :)

    Hi, great video. I managed to swap out the defective part. However, when i put the shifter cover assembly on at 3:10. The plastic shifter cover slides out when I put the car in park. Is there a certain way the shifter is supposed to fit that plastic cover?

      I don't really understand what part is sliding out, I guess the little white piece with the spring? There are several other videos out on youtube that cover the same repair, turns out there are a lot of different ways people have approached the taking apart that area, but in the end they all replace the defective switch, and all of them end up dealing with that little spring. Maybe this video will help, they spend more time on showing that piece
