Had a landlord once try to not give our deposit back. She said that she had to send someone to clean the mess we left which was BS. I spent a whole week cleaning both the new place and the old place that we were renting from her. Needless to say, she gave me my deposit back when I told her that I had pictures of what that place looked like when we 1st moved in and I would not hesitate to take them to the magistrates office. She even tried to take credit for any upgrades that we made to the house until I told her I still had receipts for when WE purchased them. After that, we found our forever home and left and never looked back. THANK YOU for all you do on this channel. Me and my 10yr old are thoroughly addicted!😂

Honestly, no one tips 30% unless you're hosting a very large get together (e.g. wedding rehearsal dinner) or are feeling overly generous and want to do a good deed for the day. 18% auto gratuity is pretty much the norm these days for parties, although some servers get their panties in a bunch if you tip less than 20%, so you can add anywhere from 2 to 5% on top of the auto.

I never cared about tips tbh as I was making like $1000 every 2 weeks. Tips were my fun money as I was the server that went above and beyond and always took home $300 + a week in tips. The "You can be replaced" boss reminds me of a lady I worked with. She worked for a Doctor for years until he decided to fire her and hire a younger woman at a much lower pay rate. She came to work at our store just to make some money until she figured out what to do next. About a month later she lets us know she's leaving. Turns out the Doctor called her and BEGGED for her to come back. The new lady had screwed everything up (lost patient files, sent the wrong info to insurance companies, etc) and he wanted her back. She went back..... after he gave her a raise and assurance that she'd still get the same hours as before. He said yes.

I did once, and it was the day I decided to go back to the Army. this was c~2006 and a table of 20 came, this was midday on a Sunday, they total ticket was somewhere in the vicinity of $1200. Ok, I thought, I will be working hard but it will be worth it... the entire time I had to wait on them hand and food, break everything down big bird/barny style, ran over to them at their every beck and call, they were so needy it took attention off my other tables, but hey this tip will be the difference between deciding groceries and rent or getting both on the same paycheck. when the dust settled I got a tip of "John 3:16, Jesus saves, even Jew's like you".
I tore off my smock, walked out, confronted them, letting them know that them doing that costs me money (our system deducted "'expected tip" (%10)) from our check and that now I could not get food or rent in and they can take the tip, roll it up and shove it up their self righteous, sanctimonious, and smug asses. They, like all Karens ever went to talk to the manager, when I got the call I knew was coming I had the Army career counselor answer the phone letting my manager know I was going to MEPS in the AM and to take it as if I had quit. Going back to war as a combat arms MOS was less stressful than dealing with church folk. I will also say bless the civil service relief act, I was able to break lease without any issues, and I now work in a very good, well paying job making ends meet very easily.

I recall something my Father told me once about when he went in person to the council offices in order to pay the bi-annual rates, (something he purposely did in person to avoid any kind of shenanigans), and on this occasion the amount came to 5 pence short of a full pound, (i.e. xxx.95p), which he paid to the nearest pound. Having handed the money over, he waited for the 5 pence change to be proffered, to which the cashier rudely stated that it was, 'only 5 pence.' My father immediately retorted that if the amount owed was xxx.05p, and he only paid to the nearest pound, would they accept the same statement of, 'it's only 5 pence', from him? They begrudgingly gave the 5p, and instead of pocketing it, he threw it back and told them to stick it in a charity box.

Eventually all the staff knew me and instead of giving me the paltry change they’d pause over the charity pot with a questioning look at me. I’d smile and nod and in went the change.
But no matter how many times I went there, they all sought my consent before dropping the change into the charity pot.

Because I was wearing a KISS shirt, the clerk assumed I was there to fight the ticket. Anyway, while paying, she has me show proof of insurance, stating the fine was much higher without it. I show it. After paying, I ask how much would it have been without it? She calculates & tells me. Less than I was paying for insurance! Anyway, you're an idiot to drive without insurance. I used to frequent a bar near my house. He had one bartender to was great at the job, but not always punctual. She opened the bar in the afternoons - usually just about the time I would get home from work, and closed it down when the bar closed. On Saturday, they would open about noon-ish, and she would be there for the evening shift. There was one time the owner of the bar was talking about firing her and hiring someone else. That was when his regular customers let him know that if she wasn't there, they would not be there, including me. He did the smart thing and kept her on. After all, you don't want to fire the person all the customers are coming in to see. He did try hiring some other people to try out, but none that had her level of service. Now, she wouldn't take any nonsense from anyone. Always willing to flirt, so long as you kept it polite, but troublemakers would be kicked out, sometimes for the rest of the night, and sometimes banned, depending on whether she thought it was the drink talking, or they were habitual offenders, or had committed a crime, such as stealing from other customers.
There was one time, I had enough to drink to start seeing double. I said to her One J (initial of her first name) is great, and 2 J's are better, but since there are not 2 J's here, I think I better go home. She agreed that would be the wise thing to do.
There was another time when the owner of the bar was bartending and one of the customers started arguing with him about being cut off. He said something like "Some friend you are!" and I approached and said "He is being your friend. He's not banning you, and he is legally responsible if you overdo. Go home and sleep it off, come back tomorrow." I don't know how I got through to him, but he did leave. I had seen him there before, and after that as he was one of the regulars. The owner thanked me for stepping in and defusing the situation.
Just my little story of not shooting yourself in the foot when it comes to running a business.

When a boss says 'you can be replace' that's a 2 way street, ie the employer can be replaced. Statistically, it takes at least a year for an employee to become fully competent at a job -learning all the in's & out's, expectations, equipment intricacies, and to mesh with other employees. Training for even the simplest jobs can be expensive. Figure an employer will spend about 3 months of new employees wages as non-productive training expense plus downtime of personnel doing the training. In other words, it's a stupid threat.

I do not understand about this 'tipping' thing in the USA and Canada. Here in Europe (in my case the UK) people get paid at least the minimum wage, so when I go into a cafe I pay the cost of the meal, eat and then leave. In a restaurant I will probably tip, but that is not expected. Waitresses are paid by their employees, which comes out of the cost of the food. The customers are not expected to pay the wages of the waitresses via tips.

Since the neighbours had called the law on her while she was being considerate by starting her work at 11am on a Sunday (which is apparently not allowed), she then decided to get her revenge by using her noisy pressure washer at the very earliest time on weekdays.
That’s 7:30am instead of 11am. She’s basically doing malicious compliance by starting really early, practically guaranteeing to wake and disturb the neighbours who reported her even though she’d been considerate.
So instead of waiting for the weekend or days she’s off to start at 11am so she wouldn’t disturb anyone’s sleep, she starts doing it the minute it’s legal at 7:30am several days in a row to deliberately wake them up but now they can’t complain because it’s legal.
I have to admit that the neighbours were very stupid. I’m sure if they’d just come to her and been polite they could have worked something out. Instead they ratted her out.
Such sweet payback. I wonder how hard it is for some people to learn that being polite, reasonable and courteous gets a much better chance of getting what you want than being an ass.

As a Canadian expat, when I grew up tipping was something you only did when service was really good, because servers are paid at least minimum wage by law and aren't expected to get their basic pay with tips. Now depending on the province minimum wage might really suck and not be a living wage, so tips become more important, but theoretically it's not like in the USA where servers can legally get paid less than minimum wage because tips.

    • @touchedouche8806
      @touchedouche8806 3 ปีที่แล้ว

As an american….. servers are paid a base lower than minimum, yes. Though by law, if the amount in tips doesnt meet the minimum wage, the establishment pays the difference. And working as one of the higher paid kitchen staff…. A good server made BANK above us. (Your basis is incorrect)

@@touchedouche8806 dude, I don't understand your reason for comment. I'm just saying that in Canada servers aren't required to bend over backwards for a-holes in hopes that they might actually tip so that they can survive. Do some actually do well on tips in the US? Sure, but I guarantee it's inconsistent and there are just as many, if not more that are going hungry because of jerks. In Canada, we do tip for good service, but it's a bonus on a proper wage, not meant to make up for subpar wage. And I've heard of so many stories where employers who don't make up for no tips, because young people don't know better.

There isn't the expectation in Canada to tip a specific percentage. The story about it was where a server was taking advantage of people who didn't know better.
Also, based on the many horror stories I've read on reddit from US servers, about how they were abused not just by customers, but also financially by employers, my assessment seems accurate. Tips are meant to make up for shit pay in the US.

I remember growing up, tipping was seen as mandatory only for good service. Do you job, get paid. You want tips? Earn them by being a good member of the waitstaff. Don't slack off, complain, drag your feet getting my ketchup, then complain that I didn't tip good. Oh, my tips pay your rent? Then act like it. Do your dang job.
Now it's basically mandatory that you tip no matter how poor of a job they do, or how little you actually require of them. But I've always seen tipping as silent consent for the employer to underpay their employees.
But there's also a system for tipping. Table is meant for waitstaff, plate is meant for cook, cup is meant for whoever busses the table when you leave. In theory. I've only ever seen a couple of waitstaff follow that.

When I left, I heard that they were scrambling because almost none of my coworkers (except 1, and she’s the first to admit that she should’ve paid more attention than what she did) had paid attention to what I knew and did. I still am hearing that, 3 years later, a manager asks my 1 coworker that had learned something from me about something and she tells him that there’s 1 person that would’ve known the answer. She said that he always looks like he’s about to cry because he knows the answer. Well, they should’ve treated me better than they did. I was treated like crud while the lazy ones were treated with the utmost respect.
