    I love how he's a lawyer and didn't seem too read the fine print when he bought the land 🤣

    • @KnightsWithoutATable
      @KnightsWithoutATable 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      The lawyer should have known what the zoning rules were for the property they bought and not been such an idiot about the business arrangement. Taking down trees and bucking them up for lumber takes a lot of hard work even with modern tools and hay can't be cut without the equipment to reap it, bail it, and transport it. If the lawyer really wanted to have a more profit driven use of the land he could have leased the fields out to a rancher in exchange for a fair share of purely grass feed beef and/or lamb and the cost of keeping the fences in good condition.

      Perhaps, but the town rezoning the property as residential now means he can subdivide it and likely sell off the 40 acres for well over what he paid for the entire property.

    Lawyer story: Love this one. Generally speaking, farmers as a class are a VERY SAVVY group of people who have to keep up with many federal, state and local laws/regulations which directly affect what and how they do their jobs. Many of them are also very well educated, having bachelor's and master's degrees in agriculture. They may not be specifically trained in the law as a lawyer should be, but they are very aware of the laws that affect them and their neighbors.

    The inventory story at the tire store: this seems to be a seriously unfortaint reality in most large work environments that require dedicated inventory control people, sales and operations managers that have never done inventory before have no idea what the job is or how vital it is to their metrics. You can usually tell how well managed a warehouse or large store work environment is just by looking at how organized the place is and if the inventory controllers are good/happy at their job.

    • @ghyslainabel
      @ghyslainabel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It is not just inventory. I had a job, once, that was a mix of data entry, testing, software development. After a couple of years, my team was reduced to me. By that time, I was at my fourth team leader. I was doing my job so well that I was invisible to the management. When I changed job, I used my last 2 weeks cleaning my plate as much as possible so no input from that team (with 0 member after I leave) would be needed for at least a month. Since business slows down in Summer, it took 4 months before my absence was felt. I heard it created so chaos, but they could not call me back.

    • @thepretzel2
      @thepretzel2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed. I work at a warehouse myself. They do have a system for their inventory, but it could definitely be tweaked by quite a bit. The way it works is that every piece of stock has a SINGLE place it's meant to be in. If it cant be put there, it goes to overstock (end of each aisle it's meant to go in), if THAT'S full, it goes to the overflow area. As of now, overflow hasnt gotten full, but the way we keep stockpiling stock, it probably will eventually, unless we get a decent amount of staff.
      A good portion of the overstock/flow could probably go up, but we barely have the staff just to pick everything going out, so the overstock/flow just keeps getting built up and up.
      Another big problem I've been seeing is that there HAZMAT in the regular bins. Those are supposed to be in a single spot in the warehouse, for obvious reasons, but somehow, someone decided to put those in the regular bins. Anytime it's spotted, it's fixed right away. Something like that, if not caught before going out, can cost the company AND the driver $5K each for the mistake.

    I've actually got the same situation as the tire inventory guy where I work. Slightly different, but similar enough. We've got multiple shops that handle multiple tasks, all with their own management, and I'm just an engineer in one of the engineering groups. One of our shops handles all sorts of temporary equipment that gets installed and removed to help projects get done safely. One guy in that shop took it upon himself to see all of the broken equipment shoved off to the side, and start fixing it in his spare time. He eventually made that his full time job, and has been doing that job for close to 30 years. He's probably going to retire in the next few years, and he's the ONLY person who's EVER done that job, and they're not sticking anyone with him to learn the ropes and take over when he leaves. On top of that, he bought all of his own tools and equipment, which are critical to the job he does, and he's taking them with him when he retires, because they belong to him, not the shop. So when he retires, the shop is suddenly going to be stuck with throwing someone in who doesn't know the ropes, and they're going to have a pair of pliers, and if they're lucky, a hammer, to try and do the job that required an entire garage full of tools. I can see the writing on the wall, and I mention it to my own management from time to time, but we're all outside that guy's chain of command, so there's not really anything we can do about it but watch, even though we WILL have to deal with none of the equipment working.

    $300 a month to heat a mansion in winter?! That's pocket change. He'd need a bloody ton of insulation to spend that little. Growing up we lived in a drafty late 1800s house. My dad put the first insulation in the attic. That place was cold in the winter! Dad kept the place at 65° on threat of pain of death if you touched the thermostat. We spent $600 - $1,000 a year to heat a 1,300 (or smaller} sq. foot house. My dad would have danced a jig to spend just $300! You should have seen the furnace. It was a slap dash conversion of a coal fired boiler. About as fuel efficient as my 1968 Toronado.

    When I opened a popular box store on Black Friday people tried blocking me from the door. "There's a line" blah blah blah. I held up my lunch bag and people reluctantly move. Followed by the customers trying to push their way into the store when I entered. People are obnoxious. I could NEVER work in retail anymore. I'd get fired for calling out people's poor behavior and lies.

    ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
    The first story reminds me off one from California many, many years ago when gas was in short supply and rationed
    There is a long line of cars waiting at the Gas Station with people standing around cars and getting angry at the wait.
    A small car starts driving past and everyone starts yelling at the driver and threatening him (He is a small man)
    So, he backs up and a few minutes later here he comes again, same result screaming yelling. etc.
    The 3rd time this happens he gets out of his car and starts to walk past the mob, a big bruiser picks him up and shoves and almost throws him to the back where he trips and falls.
    He gets up dusts himself off and yells, If you keep doing that, I will never open the station!

    On that last story.
    Used to be a projection manager at a theater before everyone went digital. Assembled the prints, took care of swapping out the slides for 25 theaters, coordinated with everyone who needed a little direction to keep things chugging along. I "joked" about being the unofficial den mother every Thursday night, because whenever ANYONE had a question about anything in the booth on Thursday, they came to me. I didn't always have the answer, but I did always know whom to speak with for the answer. So... den mother.
    In my 7th year with this company, I was given Thanksgiving off. Without asking for it. Color me shocked, but I rolled with it. Enjoyed a laid back meal with family.
    Then went to work to update the slides, which had about twice the usual number of slides (ah, Pepsi! How I don't miss your slides...) Pepsi alone was 18 slides. I did my usual marking of the slides on my own time rather than on company time. Made swapping them out so much easier...! Still, checking the chart for where to put the new and what was leaving took time. Swapping took time. I received an hour and a half of holiday pay. Naturally, the boss who paid for 50 hours of unexpected holiday pay wanted to know why I'd even come in. "Because we're paid $3,000,000 a year for the slides, and I don't want to spend the next month correcting upside down, backwards, or misplaced slides." He had no response to that. Next week, he asked me to account for all my time on the clock.
    Only once.
    Filled a 3x3" Post-it with time spent on calls, directing people, working on print building, questions asked, more calls, building, directing... Until the end of the night, I didn't spend more than 45 minutes on anything, and usually 10-15 minute blocks.
    I didn't take breaks, either.

    On the other side of the coin, you have aggressive till operators. This happened a long time ago. I was in a green grocer's in a large shopping centre. The season was summer so tomatoes were very ripe. Even the cheaper ones. There was a mixture of regular tomatoes as well as truss tomatoes that were a bit more expensive. I got to the till and the girl (probably in her late teens) got uppity with me and said the tomatoes I had looked too red to be the cheap ones. She thought I picked the truss tomatoes off the vines that are still attached and wanted to pass them off as the cheaper ones. She took the tomatoes and stormed off to the back of the shop where the tomatoes were being sold. She came back and rang them up as the cheaper tomatoes. I stood there and looked at her without saying a word. She rang them up as if nothing was amiss and that she didn't basically accuse me of what amounts to stealing. I stood there for a few minutes looking at her. Not a word of apology. I then I walked away after paying still shaking my head. I hope she will think twice before accusing someone of being underhanded.

    Story 5: GIrlfriend is not relationship material. If she is that insecure about another guy around, she will be worse just being in the same room with her a woman who she perceives her boyfriend as finding more attractive, whether he actually does or not. I dated someone like that, briefly. It was very difficult even going to movies that had nude scenes in them because she didn't like me watching.

Nipping the issue by forwarding the e-mails and other messages to the common box, with note that work is done in the order it is received by the managed mailbox I have found gets people doing it... especially when they contact you directly, and you are away... and they get put behind other work days/weeks later because they tried to sidestep the procedure.

    That farmer lawyer story sounds a lot like a guy who moved to my town...he insulted and angered all the local farmers lied and tried to cheat locals thinking he was smarter then them. Now he's been running a failing farm business for 5 years. He didn't understand our zoning or by laws for businesses and boy did that backfire. No one in town will support his business and he can't get a catering or liquor liscense....because my town has a bylaw that neighbors have to write off approval of out of zone businesses...the guy didn't really want to run a farm he wanted to have a venue with a farm theme...but he couldn't get any of those signatures because of angering and insulting all the neighbors. He also hired some out of state farm workers who screwed him over big time. He had to sell his entire beef heard because his hired farm hand didn't purchase feed for the winter but took the money and ran and none of the locals would sell him their feed because he also refused to let them cut the hay and split it like the previous owner. No one would cut his fields either so never move to a new place and insult the locals...the guy was just in the paper for inadequate keeping of livestock because he hires incompetent people. Cows screaming for days in labor with no vet called to assist labor...hundreds of chicken shoved in tiny pens with a farm dog...farming isn't about just making money its a community.
