Martian Manhunter has been a prominent founding member of the Justice League for decades, standing alongside some of DC Comics' heavy hitters like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Aquaman, and The Flash. The character's popularity is mostly limited to Justice League Unlimited in the DCAU and a handful of DC Animated Movie appearances. He serves as one of the more underrated DC heroes, as he has yet to have a solo movie or series. Martian Manhunter has gotten the short end of the stick in projects like Injustice, Supergirl in the Arrowverse, and Zack Snyder's Justice League. Hopefully, with the emergence of James Gunn's DCU, the character can finally be pushed properly into the public eye.

To why Cyborg replaced Martian Manhunter as one of the founding members of the Justice League is beyond me
Idk about anyone else but Cyborg will always be a founding member of the teen titans to me. Maybe it wasn’t that way in the comics but regardless I love his chemistry with them way more than with the justice league

Putting Cyborg on JL ruined Cyborg's personality. He's kinda a nothing character now. Swapping MM with Cyborg did a great disservice to both characters.

100% agree. Cyborg was so lively, charismatic and a natural leader, plus his relationship with Beast Boy is such a fantastic contrast. We got NONE of that in the New 52

The fact that he's in Death Of Superman to only read Doomsday's mind and be conveniently thrown into a gas station that explodes is funny to me. Like, the dude is on the level of Superman. Wtf?
He could have turned intangible and phased through before he hit the gas station

It doesn't matter to DC. Technically there are other heroes just as powerful and uet better equipped to deal with doomsday e.g. manhunter and wonder woman but dc wont let that happen

While thinking of finding a job to feed himself so he can attend a high school, he suddenly runs into a kid named Rick Jones and behind him is the famous, or infamous, jade giant, The Incredible Hulk.
Well Disney didn't go with the original team of avengers though. The ot characters were wasp ant man, iron man, hulk, Hawkeye, Thor and then captain America when they discovered him in ice. Then back panther and Vision.
Personally I would say that it’s more like taking Colossus and making him an avenger than cyclops but I respect your opinion.
MM is like a fusion of Batman's quiet and stoic demeanor with Superman's alien heritage and kindness, he's my favorite JL member

I don't like how after the new 52 Martian Manhunter is always replaced with Cyborg, more than anything because Cyborg in the Justice League is usually just a computer, they usually take away his personality, charisma and 90% of the interactions with the League is "Cyborg hack this" or "Cyborg do this", Cyborg is 1000 times better as Teen Titan, come on Justice League already has Red Tornado as the robot guy, another one is not necessary.
It also makes me angry because Martian Manhunter and Red Tornado are characters that fit much more with the League, but noooo, put Cyborg in to be the living laptop.
You would be surprised how many people actually don't even know. J'onn is a founding member of the Justice leauge 💀. It's honestly crazy to me, considering he's easily in the top 5 in the leauge (possibly top 5 in the DC as a whole). Definitely deserves more recognition.

People really overlook Martian Manhunter, even in the comics. He has telepathy, shapeshifting, intangibility, invisibility, etc! He’s literally got everyone’s favorite hero’s powers rolled in one!
I actually feel like this is why he's not around much. Op characters are extremely hard to write and even in a lot of comics where he's around he's still sidelined
@@kory7698 I definitely see your point. I think there are ways to incorporate him into stories though, like in Justice League Doom. He has a very exploitable weakness (fire) and I feel like the right writer could really do something with him. I hope James Gunn finds a way to incorporate him into his new universe.

Don't blame the character blame DC comics I love batman but I also love DC comics as a whole. Replacing him with Cyborg was sad. Replacing him with Cyborg and making Cyborg the guy who guards the base or the Justice League's car was even worse. Yeah, J'onn was basically their phone during the Morrison days, but that meant at least he could be there through the whole thing. And if he was knocked out, that was actually a detriment. If you drive your car to the battle, and your car gets broken during the battle, the most you're gonna get is "Oh no. Now I have to walk home."

Cyborg was waaaay cooler with The Teen Titans. He even was considered the "backbone" of the group. I hope James Gunn sends him back to the Titans, or at least with Starfire, Beast Boy and Raven.

I swear Martian Manhunter us probably the most UNDERRATED member of the Justice League. He is not just a founding member of the Justice League but also the heart and soul of the Justice League. I especially fell in love with the character from watching the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited DCAU show's. Jonn is such a multi faceted and complex character that deserves so much more recognition and I truly believe the character deserves either a limited series or short film about the character because there is so much interesting and introspective stories to tell with the character and how he views Earth and his relationship with other superheroes like Superman, as they were both immigrants from the stars bu Jonn sadly had to grasp the tragedy of how he lost his people.
I actually have this pitch for Martain Manhunter animated series set as a homage to classic 1930/40's noir detective stories and sci fi films. My pitch has Jonn established as a detective trying to solve an overarching story about a series of murders that are completely untraceable because the murder is secretly another Martian leading to a deeper look into Martain heritage and lore about Jonn's people. I also have another plot idea for this animated series pitch is that Jonn after arriving on Earth, he would accidentally cause the death of an innocent man names John Jones, and I thought it would be a compelling idea to have Martian Manhunter promise the man in his dieing breath that he'd look after his family by impersonating that man for a couple years essentially stealing his life and raising a new family much like the one he lost on Mars. I think this would be a pretty interesting story to tell with Martian Manhunter and lead to alot of moral and internal conflicts especially with how Jonn as an alien must feel guilty impersonating and honouring the life of another man as his dieing wish. What so you think do you like my idea?
Honestly Martian Manhunter getting superseded by Cyborg has hurt *both* of them as characters.
Martian Manhunter loses one of his most important roles by no longer being a part of the Justice League, causing DC to forget about him ENTIRELY, and Cyborg effectively loses the chance to be a part of the Teen Titans, where he has a much better and more iconic role.
I don't know what stick DC had up their ass when they dropped Martian Manhunter out but they should've taken it out much sooner, now it seems like they don't even know who Martian Manhunter IS.
John Ostrander's run on Martian Manhunter made me really appreciate John in a way outside the Justice League animated series. I guess the big problem with John is that within the comics he always had a lot of superpowers which came off as just Superman but a martian. Yes, I love that his weakness is fire. That's a lot more believable than an irradiated space rock and told a lot of great stories about John's own trauma and his race being destroyed by it.
But I think had the comics gone the Justice League animated series route where John's powers were clearly psychic and shapeshifting I think you could have told some great stories. Because I could picture a TV series or even a movie where John escapes to earth in the 1950s and assumes the identity of a detective and in turn has to navigate Earth. He comes to see Earth as his own home and has to stop an enemy who once destroyed Mars.
Plus, with John being a shapeshifter, it makes it much easier to recast John because he can be anyone. Also, I'd try to get Carl Lumbry involved because he defined John for me as a character.
Martian Manhunter is such wasted potential, he could travel anywhere in the world and fit in. How are they not understanding how useful that is??
I don't think anyone will top Carl Lumbry as Martian Manhunter from the DCAU. He brings a somewhat distant yet soft sounding voice that I feel really fits the character.
I think the reason why they didn't use martian manhunter is because he is very hard and costly to adapt because of his shape shifting powers and natural features

I do agree that Martian Manhunter has not been given his proper respect as of late, and he's so interesting. In many ways, he is the amalgamation of Superman and Batman. Martian Manhunter has had a similar status to Superman by how they are both the supposed last of their respective alien races, but J'onn Jonzz lived his life in Martian culture. J'onn's similarity with Batman is that they both watched their families and would become detectives, but in J'onn's case, he watched his family die as an adult, either due to war or due to a virus that attacked martians psychologically. Martian Manhunter definitely had enough of an interesting story to warrant his own movie, but he just wasn't utilized as much. Some of the best uses of Martian Manhunter are the DCAU, some animated DC movies (Justice League new frontier, Justice League crisis on two earths, Superman Man of tomorrow, etc), and the animated series the Batman. Even Smallville and the CW Supergirl series made good use of Martian Manhunter, even though in Smallville, he was underutilized. The Martian Manhunter was just completely wasted in the snyderverse. The Martian Manhunter definitely deserves more respect.
Even in the injustice games which are some of the biggest for a full dc roster barely include him. The first game he joins as dlc with no part in the story, and the second game he has zero inclusions or even a kameo appearance.

The villain is his brother, but also in his Pre-Crisis stories he has several villains some of which were seen in Young Justice and one had a loose adaptation on JLAS.

Martian Maneater/Malefic/Mala'fa'ak (one of J'onn's brothers besides T'omm J'onzz who wanted to be Martian Kidhunter pre-crisis, but J'onn said no because he didn't want their parents to worry too much...an actual good reason for no sidekick back then, Superman kinda had a few odd reasons though instead of just saying "well I'd like you to do your own thing" at first.)
J'onn also has more weaknesses than just fire...he hates microwave-based lasers and the chemical Z-6...all of which scramble his telepathy and invisibility.

I also think the better idea of J'onn's weakness in books should be chocolate, not fire or Z6 given how much he likes the stuff especially after Billy introduced him to Oreos. This would make it extremely difficult to work on a case, not because his stomach can't handle it, but because he gets as bonkers over it as Daphne Blake does...making it hard for him to focus on using his abilities...and it's a whole lot more readily available than a match. Infact the ideal candies to avoid feeding J'onn? Anything made by the company Mars...and especially if the candy has an intergalactic name such as Milky Ways and Mars Bars...J'onn would go "cuckcoo for coco-puffs" over those two...and then if he looks inside a children's sci-fi book or software game...he might find out he's the favorite superhero of Ralphie Tennelli.

Martian Manhunter is really awesome and really deserves way more love more then ever, heck personally for me nothing would make me happier but to see him back on the justice league and not be on another team which isn't interesting in my opinion.
I think the “problem” with Martian Manhunter and most other characters they try to add to the Justice League like Cyborg and Hawkgirl when getting adapted is what I call 7th member syndrome, as in they are relatively popular characters but don’t have their own set of notable side characters, villains, family (characters with similar powers) or notable stories, granted this could be fixed with a solid ongoing solo series.
I love J'onn like he's so sweet, he was always one of my favorites back when I watched JL/JLU. His calm compassion and cool shapeshifting and intangible abilities drew me instantly to him. The episode where he spends Christmas with Clark and the crossover Static episode lives rent free in my head. It really sucks how both him and Aquaman get so slighted when it comes to being founding members of the Justice League. I really hope they can get proper interpretations together someday, they're two of my favorite og members 🧍🏽
Martian Manhunter need better villains.
I don’t know why, but I always love when Martian Manhunter shows up, he always seems super stoic and wise, very emotionally intelligent, nurturing, innocent, and compassionate, kind of a grandfather figure for the group, that also happens to have godlike powers. Such an underrated superhero
I hate that the reason they replaced J'onn with Victor was that they replaced John Stewart with pasty Jordan so DC needed a new "token. " Thus, I hate the producers with their backhanded racism.
A cool thing about Martian Manhunter learning culture through tv, is that is how I and many other people have learned a new language. I learned English, German and Polish through this and it made me like J'onn a lot.
I wonder if he mastered English in one of the ways most foreign people and children learn it through television depending on if they ever wanted to change his arrival date to keep up with DC's constant bouncing of whenever the Silver Age starts for their "Now". I mean he seems like the guy who would actually buy a vowel.
So many people were giving Zack Snyder, and DC, hell for going with Martian Manhunter instead of John Stewart at the end of ZSJL, but I was honestly so relieved. The Lanterns are ridiculously cool, but my boy J’onn J’onzz deserves to be adapted… it’s just a shame we never got to see more of what he would have been like on the big screen… I seriously hope James Gunn and Peter Safran bring him back into their DCU by the time we get our next Justice League film!

Tbh aquaman doesn’t feel like a great fit for the justice league. He’s only really threatening in the sea and he’s supposed to be ruling Atlantis. It would make sense that he is off on his own and infrequently collaborates with the justice league similar to black panther in marvel.

Shout-out to Carl Lumbly for his work voice acting J'onn in the DCAU. He gave a J'onn a stoic but vulnerable persona- a person who's lost everything, so he keeps his heart hidden and doesn't want to see bad things happen to anyone else. As the series goes on, his tone shifts and he becomes kinder and warmer, showing how humanity's affected him.

My GOAT fr. He’s one of the most disrespected and under appreciated characters in modern times. Personally I would like to see Superman be the reason he comes into public eye and then have them bond as being both aliens foreign to Earth. Manhunter is the heart of the team and allows for very emotional and sentimental moments to occur. It would also be really interesting to see the civil rights movement tied into his background as maybe he arrived during the 1960s and faced heavy prejudice. Manhunter wouldn’t want to see humans go through the same thing that happened on his planet and rightfully he would stand up for those facing violence.
Martian Manhunter and Vision. Both are wise and noble characters with so much potential are instead pushed to the background.

In Human Target Martian Manhunter starts a "physical" relationship with Fire.
Beside the obvious Tom King's kinks like the fact that MM is the sub in the relationship (as seen in the panel "you're the goddamn manhunter") and that the intercorse between them is humiliating for MM (as seen in the most famous panel of MM in Human Target where he sits on the bed after having done things with Fire) there's a way worse thing to add:
MM has a kink to being burned alive.
I wouldn't mind it too much with any other character but MM? The guy that saw both his wife and daughter burn alive before his very eyes, that felt so helpless that this event almost drive him mad and that still suffers because of it has a kink of being burned alive?
That's simply disgusting and depressing

Zero Year for me was the only truly great story of Scott Snyder in his run.

It's strange to say but that story proved that if there is a Batman villain that Scott Snyder knows how to write that has to be Riddler:
In Zero Year he is smug, full of himself, annoying, extremely clever (especially with tech), obsessed with riddles and his look is a bit of a mix between the classic Golden/Silver Age look (with the mask) and the more iconic suit.
The only thing that he lacks is Riddler's deep hatred for Batman and the fact that he perceives that Batman's reputation as the world's greatest detective isn't deserved but it makes sense here cause it is Zero Year, it is supposed to be their first encounter and Batman's first year of activity.
I don't think everything in recent years is bad but i agree that most of it was bad.
If i can suggest you something to read in 2017 Chuck Dixon and Graham Nolan wrote a 12 issue miniseries on Bane called "Bane: Conquest".

I think WB just saw Martian Manhunter as a chance to have one mandatory black member on the team and no one complain about the race swap cause he could just as easily shape-shifting into a black man as much as a white one cause in reality he's green.
So in adaptations where they lack a black hero on the core roster because they are using Hal Jordan instead of John Stewart, or their are few iconic black characters they want to give the CW permission to use, Manhuntter gets chosen every time. But he's not their to be John Jonz the Martian, he's there to be black superman which is why you get wierd scenes where he's in his green body but showing his black human face as if he took off a mask.
Cyborg being added to the team ment to those writers they didn't need a fake black hero anymore, they were just determined to lean on their one really well known iconic one instead. So Martian Manhunter got sidelined.
"But they could have two black characters, theirs no rule against it". Logically yes, but these writers are not governed by logic. An essential part of being a diverse representative is that they are minorities. Putting multiple members on the team representing the minority takes away the minority status on screen because they aren't really alone anymore. So they rarely add more than two.

Or they could have just made cyborg Hal Jordan and Martian manhunter all apart of the core justice league and had 8 founding members including Superman Batman aquaman Wonder Woman and flash. Don’t see how that would have been controversial. Even add hawk girl back in as a 9th founding member.
@YMan-zo5kg what are you talking about? I was talking why Manhunter has disappeared from modern founding rosters of the team from WBs obvious perspective. And your fan pitching a founding roster that doesn't exist in that combination. Cyborg replaced John Jonz in the New 52 and Snyderverse founding roster, he wasn't added beside him. And Hal, John Stewart, and Hawkgirl who has nothing to do with this aren't in the Snyder films at all, and only Hal is in the New 52 roster.
As for "controversy", I don't know where you read me call anything controversial. I was talking about why WB does what they did, not what fans think about all that. They benched Manhunter because the execs came to see him as the black rep roster filler, and Cyborg was upgraded in their eyes to that role.
As for what I think, I think introducing Cyborg in the movies on the adult team and skipping his history with the Teen Titans which he's a pillar of is be as silly as introducing Star Girl, Dr Fate, Alan Scott, Hourman, and Sandman on the Justice Leauge first and not the JSA which they lift up and define.
And agree with this video it's dumb treating Manhunters alien face like a superhero mask he takes off when relaxing at home, but if it weren't for dumb things like that I might be inclined to say his human forms race swap is an example of a good race swap in comics.
And I think the unspoken "no more than 2 black characters" rule WB seems to put on DC is really dumb and needs to go.
And I think because WB sees these characters as pure checkboxes to fill, their approach to using them is often shallow and unsatisfying because they never ask what made these characters work and shine in the first place.
I don't know if that thought is 'controversial' for you or if I share it with many others, it's just what I think.

Both Martian Manhunter and Captain Atom suffer from being written by people who don't understand how Cap's powers work or how MM's fire weakness works

Martian Manhunter should always be a part of the Justice League. To me, he’s always felt like an important figure. He’s not the one you tend to think about as much as the others, but he’s there for a reason.
Cyborg fits the Titans more anyway. The way I’d write it is that Cyborg would eventually leave the Titans and join the League in the future. But using him as a replacement for J’onn is a disrespect to both characters.
Martian Manhunter and Miss Martian are still related in Young Justice, since J'onn sister is M'Gann's mother, and her father is a White Martian, and their kids either came out Green or White. Making the CW versions outliers with them being... romantic.
Back on topic, by making Cyborg a founding member of the JL, he hasn't been given that much of big presence in many stories, in comics and in media, which in retrospect, hurts both him and Martian Manhunter, instead of just one character. Talk about a backfire.
Jonzz NEEDS a movie in the DCU, just show him struggling between his detective work while still being indercover as an alien, and trying to understand how society on Earth is working while grieving his own planet idk, maybe he could be on a case that led to a secret Earth invasion planned by undercover White Martians it could be so cool.

Zack Snyder pushing the characterisation of Superman as an aloof Alien outsider that still cares about the humans around him always felt to me like a better fit for Martian Manhunter as a character.
I miss martian manhunter being s founding member, or really just him in general, he was so great, he's always the heart of the group, he was really cool, he chose to be a black guy, he was my favorite founding member growing up
Manhunter unfortunately adds to the superhero movie troupe of "This way I get more face time!", because he's a shape-shifter. And yes, I also agree how he gets less attention. Also Martian Manhunter works great for a representation of people of color when contrasted with Superman.
Scott Snyder’s justice league run had some problems a few years back, but one thing I loved was the focus it gave to Martian Manhunter. Some of the best material for the character happened in that run.

Outside of Batman, Supes and WW. John Jones Aka the Martian Man Hunter has always been my favorite character that never gets any love and is the most underutilized member in DC. The POTENTIAL with this character.......Its sad to see. Loved his character so much in the animated show and even there he would get the short end of the stick at times.

To be fair to DC or WB for not giving Martian Manhunter solo films or solo shows, he's never really been a solo character, at least not to me. Like, he has had solo stories but his most important role as a vital member to the Justice League (fun fact, the reason DC chose Martian Manhunter was because they didn't want to overexpose their bigger characters, so J'onn was the Superman stand-in while Green Arrow was the Batman stand-in), the glue holding that group together in most iterations, one of the most powerful characters on the team in nearly every lineup, and plays the role of a wise father figure for younger generations. His main solo stories of importance were him waiting for the martians to come for him before he learned he was the last of his race and the introduction of his main villain Ma'alefa'ak. Besides that, he might as well just be a Justice League character, a lot of his character development occurred in the Justice League. It was when he joined the League that he first became a public hero and it was as a member of the League that we saw the character evolve from more distant and alien to more human (and then devolve because DC has no idea what character arcs are).
While it's certainly not impossible to give J'onn his own solo film or show, he certainly works much better in the League. Maybe this is bias and someone who has actually read a Martian Manhunter comic could correct me (I've only read some of the classic stories and the John Ostrander series). If I were to bring Martian Manhunter into film, it would probably be as a major Justice League member only without any solos and his story could take inspiration from what they did with him the DCAU, the last surviving martian after his race was killed by White Martians, becomes a founding member of the Justice League and later coordinates their missions as he grows more and more familiar with Earth. Maybe he can have a very limited supporting cast in those films like King Faraday from New Frontier. Maybe later introduce M'gann and maybe you can give him a solo film then focusing on the relationship between him and a child of the race that destroyed his, showing his forgiveness and selflessness, maybe then we can see more about martian culture and civilization.
Why DC chose to basically remove him from the founding lineup in 2011 is beyond me. There's two ideas I can think of, either they just wanted at least one of the founders to not be white or someone at DC REALLY liked Cyborg. If it's the former, I feel like they could've just used John Stewart instead of Hal Jordan considering John was probably a more popular version of the Green Lantern at the time for non-comic readers with the DCAU.
Also, side note, J'onn and M'gann were related in Young Justice, we just didn't know how until Season 4. The way Young Justice portrays Mars is vastly different from the most common depiction of Mars in DC. Unlike in the comics or the DCAU, the Green Martians were not exterminated by the White Martians, instead Martian society is still thriving with Green and White sharing the planet but white martians being treated as lesser than green martians by the general population. This leads to Ma'alefa'ak's (reimagined as the brother of M'gann and being a white martian) attempt to exterminate the Green Martians which is a plan that is foiled by M'gann, Connor, and Gar. M'gann is the daughter of J'ann M'orzz, the younger green martian sister of J'onn J'onzz. She married M'aatt M'orzz who is a white martian, a relationship that is frowned upon on Mars. While most of their 29 children are Green Martians, M'gann and M'comm (Ma'alefa'ak) were born as white martians. Thus, M'gann is J'onn's biological niece in Young Justice, but typically not in mainstream comics.
The CW really feels like it's written by teenagers who watch any two random characters interact and scream "NOW KISS!"
Martian Manhunter was also Leader of *Justice League Task Force* yes, Justice league had their own Task Force.

Son of Vulcan is old hero but their 2000s iteration, there was a line of Son of Vulcans, they have the power of Fire from when the White Martians experimented on them since ancient times. After Son of Vulcans harnessed the power of Fire they use the power to hunt down White Martians.
The current Son of Vulcan names is Miguel “Mikey” Devante. He only had a mini series, he went into a coma in Titans East and he was last seen Squid squad: El Diablo Alive and well.

Martian Manhunter is way too powerful: super-strength, nigh-invulnerability, superspeed, flight, regeneration, shapeshifting, intangibility, invisibility, telepathy, and get this- heat vision! He was supposed to be vulnerable to fire, why give him heat vision? But Cyborg belongs to Titans, not JL.
Martian Manhunter is one of those things like Thor's hammer. We've wrote ourselves into a corner. The Avengers/Justice League cannot win! We must rewrite this story, but we only have two hours left! Quick, come up with a new power for the Martian. As long as Mjlnir isn't picked up by someone unworthy, as long as it doesn't involve fire, it/he can do it!
Great job on this one! Oh man I absolutely hate everything they did with Martian Manhunter in the supergirl show except one episode from season 4 where he first set up his detective agency. I have to say that was a good episode but otherwise I cringed throughout most of the series and I really hated the Megann ship too! No joke! I’ve recently gotten into ttrpg. And I got popurrí of different kinds of dice with unique colors, sort of. That was done to represent each member of the Justice League. This includes Martian Manhunter. I’m also working on a fan art project of the Justice League as a an rpg party with each member fulfilling the role of each of the major classes. I definitely want to see Martian Manhunter as a Monk.
Given how powerful he is they should be treating him like he’s more of a threat on par with Superman
