I totally agree. Plus, she's one of the rare legacy character who's more popular and important to the overall DC lore than their predecessor. Unlike most of the Silver Age characters who had different looks and origins from their Golden Age counterparts i.e. Green Lantern & Flash, Zatanna is a true legacy, gaining her powers, looks, and connections from her father Zatara.
Ok....we'll wait for feminism 4.0 to come along, let her find out her father isn't her father, put her in an incestuous relationship with her brother, and turn a boring/bland background character in an overhyped, overexposed drain on public sanity... But since people gotta "people" we get "House of M ver WTF"....(Wandavision)....... ....now that said....WHY would you want to do that to one of the top 3 female characters DC created????
It's no wonder that not too many people like Zatanna beyond the basic fishnet stockings and bondage level. She's treated as a side character to her father (who's been dead since before she was introduced) or Constantine. She's only ever been relevant as the daughter of her father, a token team member who's there for padding and cannon fodder, or Constantine's fling. Only select few stories really explored who Zatanna is as a character and bothered giving her a personality of her own beyond looking for her "still dead since the last time you checked" father or fixing Constantine's messes.
@@samflood5631 True, but Zachary was part of the Teen Titans in the comic books, so he didn't completely disappear. The thing with Zachary is that you can't introduce him to a show before first introducing Zatanna, because his whole thing is that he's her cousin, and introducing Zatanna is already too much trouble for most DC properties to hassle with.
I know Zatanna by watching shows like DC Super Hero Girls, Justice League Action, and JLU, and I loved the character in those versions. I honestly hope that with the success of 'My Adventures with Superman', characters like Zatanna, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, Flash, and others will get their own shows in this animated universe. I would love to see that.
Yeah Zatanna driven by her personal goal to bring light and happiness with her magic in DC magical world that filled with dark, brooding, depressed people is really high point that make her unique among the DC heroes especially among the magic folks. Also JL Action does also give us an entertaining fight scene where Zatanna have dynamic fight with her stage magician tools like her top hat, cards, handkercief. I think they could take at look at Naruto on how magic fight could be done especially with how character in Naruto shout out their magic spell while also still have cool, dynamic fight. I agree with You that Young Justice Phantom could actually boost Zatanna if they actually care to focus on her character. Focusing on Zatanna being torn apart between her personal driving goal to save her father and her immense rensponsibility as leader to safeguard Earth against impossible odds would be great. Have the segment on how she desperately trying to save her dad with even extreme measures. Also exploring her feels about the protege as her own family could flesh out her character especially with difficult decision she must take on last part of her arc

The 2018 Justice League Dark series by Tynion IV and Ram C established that all magic has a cost which was a recurring theme in its issues. In addition, magic must have a “medium” to pass through such as a helmet, backwards incantations, wands, etc. It’s a good explanation for why Zatanna doesn’t utilize magic without speaking, since the cost is grave when used without doing so.
@@Naruto_fishcakeI might be giving the writers too much credit but I personally think that’s simply because the writers don’t want to create new realms and have to world build on it but that’s just my two cents on the matter
I have long felt Zatanna is a vastly underutilized character to the point where even her basic lore seems underdeveloped when compared to her contemporaries. As one that actively seeks out comics with her presence, I started down the rabbit hole to understand the context of Bring Down the House when I happened upon your video. I've no doubt that James Gunn could easily find a place for her in his DC productions.
I’ve always loved Zatanna a lot since JL/JLU and also Young Justice. I’d love to see her used more. If they bring her into Gunn’s universe they better do her right
Possibly a hot take: For the next justice league run, Zatanna should be one of the founding members. And should be the go-to expert on anything magic for the league.
Four of the founding six are pretty important in various ways so I'd disagree. Batman is the bar you have to clear to be a superhero, Superman is the role model, Green Lantern depends on version much like Flash but they usually work as the Rule book and Moral Compass respectively. Martian Manhunter and Wonder Woman are fairly interchangeable with a few others but they still need to be swapped with powerhouses.
@@thekicker2517saying wonder woman is interchangeable is insane. She’s literally part of the trinity and just like bats and supes is ALWAYS a founding member. This WW downplay has to stop.🤦🏾
No. She's either going to get sidelined by the rest of the members of the League or treated like a background character. I'd make her a consultant but not a mainstay of the team. Give the Justice League Dark more relevance and have her be a founding member alongside Constantine and Madame Xanadu. Since the JLD deals primarily with magic-based threats, there's way more potential to explore her as a character and what exactly magic means to her.

I agree with most of this, but I want to add that when it comes to pairing, she's more often paired with Constantine than Batman, to the point that her fans have been annoyed when she isn't seemingly allowed to stand on her own without him being involved in some way. While I like his character too, he shouldn't be included if she ever gets a solo movie (maybe in a sequel, at least) so people get to learn more of who she is, and so she doesn't come off as Constantine's most famous ex.
@belias360 The problem is that Constantine has a pretty developed backstory, side characters and appears fairly frequently in media while Zee doesn't. So instead of it coming off like a team up every time they're together (think something along the lines of Super Sons) she ends up feeling like one of Constantine's background characters because of how little there is to her compared to him.
Always liked Zatanna. a stage preformer magician themed superhero is rad. Though I wish makers focused more of her magic on stage preformance like magic instead of magic laser beams and stuff. More illusions, throwing. playing cards, sucking peoples into her hat, pulling some monster out of her hat, mirror tricks, etc.
I think a good example of Zatanna mixing with the main heroes is the JL Heroes video game. That JLU episode was great… but Zatanna definitely needs more love along with many other top tier DC heroes.

A very well thought out video talking about all her fanbases biggest issues with DC. Thanks for taking the time to highlight her and getting it so right 🙏🩵
Zatanna is my favorite DC character hands down, no question. I hated how they treated her in Justice League Dark. They did great with her in early Young Justice, until she grew up and had her students which was just dumb.
They tend to make Raven the default magic heavy in stories, media etc. i like zatana DC has so much cool stuff, maybe too much as they clearly dont know what to do with everything.
Thinking about it, yeah if they make her goth looking like they sorta did in the animation recently, she cant out “goth” raven and becomes somewhat redundant. Zatana should fill the middle between Raven and dr fate. Im not sure how u modernise her outfit properlly so it can thread that needle properlly but there are likely good versions in the comics that could be adapted. Just my two cents. Solid video.
The original Trinity was actually Barry Allen, Oliver Queen and Hal Jordan. Back when Oliver was like his tv counterpart back then, and Hal was like his Justice League Origins. The other Trinity was Zatara, Sandman and Dr Fate. Superman was depicted as a rookie at that time, just like Batman and Wonder Woman.
Aside from drooling over her thighs in dc universe online when i was like 14, i never knew who tf she was. DC gonna do something with their roster damn
Weirdly my first introduction to her was the Death Battle she had with Scarlet Witch and that made me more interested with her character I wished there were more things out there that involved her in it as she seems like a really cool and fun character which is always up my alleyway
so many people have wanted female jld members getting their own story too, but the top two in demand are definitely raven and zatanna. like, one of the most powerful magic users just to get nerfed every time when she could literally have been such a huge help in major fights, or raven as the daughter of a literal demon always just being tossed back and forth between the trigon and human side and killed and resurrected, rinse and repeat, really just gets old for me.
I like Zatanna. She is fun and cool character. I think she ends up tie down too much with Batman and Constantine. (In New 52 she was close to femlae Constantine with better social skills) Please bring back Black Canary and Zatanna's friendship back. Don't get me wrong there is wrong about Dinah and Barbara, Dinah and Helena, Dinah and Diana. But since New 52, they barely interract anyone. If we wanted to do street level while making Batman a strong investigative focus in the league instead of just street-level, Green Arrow makes more sense as the "street guy"- literally his own words on JLU...and the whole reason Bruce recruited him in the first place. Action? Probably could have it be a very rare guy that shows up. I mean sure I'm enjoying the Bakers being close with the Wests (and Surge & Animal Girl clearly crush on each other to which Thunderheart finds it weird that her bestie crushes on her brother) in Flash, but why not let Animal Man be the Action Guy? I mean since Animals+Action go together like some Rangers who used to be on Fox Kids that tracks as a major selling point+ Buddy's got plenty of Titan connections as well...as before the Patrol adopted him...BB works with him in some timelines and he's worked with Kori...so Kori, BB & Wally? That's either two gingers and a blonde group of youths or three ginger Titans depending on the timeline...take your pick.
DC Vertigo was heavily focused on the magical side of the DC Universe, unfortunately they started hiring certain people that were more focused on political messaging to write on their stuff and subsequently closed down. It was quite sad, after decades of fantastic titles that really added ocean level depth to the DC universe was gone. Now that all the stuff is just under the DC label, the magical side is literally just a barely mentioned side plot in the DC Universe
Imagine it's a show about Zatana going on tour. It's a mystery with brain-f*ck elements. Am I the only one who thinks it was kinda wasted potential to have Batman and Zatanna be a thing in the comics (they hinted at the idea but it never really got off the ground, closest we got was the Superman/Batman comic run where Zatanna and Batman are in a fantasy where they are married). There's something funny to me about having the most logical, non-magic believing guy in the superhero biz dating one of the most well-known magicians in the DC universe.
Definitely. Dc should give them an elseworld atleast. Damian could use having a magic user like Zatanna around since he is getting involved with magic and demon stuff.
I'm surprised they haven't made a full comic series of Zatanna dealing with the magical threats of the DC Universe, in a similar marketing way they've done with Dr. Strange at Marvel. We're constantly reminded of her father issues that she never seems to grow from until the climax of her shorter series, she's always subjected into the shadow of whoever's book she's being featured in, and besides Paul Dini's perfection with making sure she's fantastically written, some writers make her out to be so weak and bland(I'm looking at you Mariko Tamaki and your self-insert writing!). She's a whimsical hero that could appeal to a simple audience entertained by magical media, she now has enemies that she can rival for a major plot(Brother Night and comically, Fusseli that we got to see in DC SHG), and she always turns her magic into something fun and clever to keep us entertained. I'd LOVE to see her in live-action, but the focus of many major producers care more about an actor's image than they do many stories(and rush so much crap throughout the plot), that I'd rather see her in a solo animated movie or series(PAUL DINIS BROTHER NIGHT STORY 2011 COUGH COUGH) and then let that popularity evolve into a live series. Bring her back into the main Injustice Game series or another DC major game to expand the audience. Give our Zee some love! *That boondocks clip at the end nearly took me out haha*
Zatanna is the most underrated character in DC. Green Lantern is my favorite but Zatanna is more underrated. Also Dr. Light being able to incapacitate the whole Justice League and pull Deathstroke out in Identity crisis is so stupid, the whole fight is as people use it to say Deathstroke somehow beats characters far beyond him even though he lost that fight by the end.
I can see why magic is not a side DC explores much. Unless you're batman or superman, who feature more sci-fi than magic, you're gonna have hard time when receiving attention.
@@noka4033 Magic is in a bad place right now because sci-fi has kicked it out of its place. Like what use is teleportation magic when Batman has a teleportation machine. @@rabbitseason7537someone needs to make an analysis on how "scifi killed magic" it's kinda malicious even...it seems like the scifi world has a grudge against magic because any scientific exploration was considered witchcraft back in medieval & early colonial times
@@rabbitseason7537 because Sci-Fi was popularized as a comic book building tool in the pulp age like Flash Gordon & The Phantom...as well as Jerry & Joe's proto-Supes of Dr. Occult. Here the reasons, sure her design is attractive and distinctive. But then You read her comics or watch Young Justice, You could see how much potential she has. Zee has great personal goal about spreading happiness with her magic, she has whole Homo Magi and Hidden City as lore, her power also could give You a lot of engaging and dynamic fight with visual fest
I personally like her because of her personality. In a world full of grim and overly serious characters, she's fun and boisterous while still remaining competent, and that tends to bounce off other characters pretty well/give us pretty interesting dynamics, like her relationship with Constantine. (Doesn't hurt that she's gorgeous either).
Zatanna's also got roots in Supes' books too...her dad was literally the backup feature in Action from day 1...and is the only reason why Clark can still fly today....he briefly lost the ability as a baby when he flew a little too far, but Zatara restored it knowing Clark was gonna need it. Clark then started attending his shows, and as recently revealed pretended to be him once, but since Kryptonians and magic don't get along...he's even lousy at parlor tricks.
DC ladies who need comics focus and \or an animated series: *WONDER WOMAN* (it's been decades, you've officially run out of excuses for not giving her a cartoon, Kite-Man and Peacemaker have their own shows). Zatanna (Don't turn her into a woman John Constantine, let her be her own thing, maybe they end up working together on a few cases, and their differences of ideology are challenged, but also in a way that doesn't portray Zatanna's idealism as naïveté.) Black Canary (give her a superhero family outside of Green Arrow's) Vixen (expand on the lore of the Tantu Totem, maybe there are other Totems like in the CW shows, but each Totem is connected to a real-life god from an actual African religion (this one would have to be done very carefully and with support from various experts on African cultures.) Faith (have her psychic powers open up mindscapes and she goes on psychic adventures, or lean into the D.E.O. connections and have her question her morals) Natasha Irons\Steel Kimiyo Hoshi\Dr. Light Hawkgirl. (sci-fi fantasy swashbuckling space adventure with her possibly questioning the idea of the reincarnation cycle and whether or not she and Carter are their own individuals outside of being simple reincarnations) Starfire (Sadly, Teen Titans Go has done more for her character outside of the Titans than most DC comics.) Raven (maybe something involving the Nightforce, just written a thousand times better)
My frustation is DC always shoehorning Constantine when the story is focused on Zatanna and the writer tends to make Constantine steal the spotlight from her
Ya know, the funny thing is that the concept of Zatanna and Bruce being close friends originally started in TAS that later got incorporated in the comics during the early 2000s.
I liked the Justice League Dark movie, but using Batman instead of Wonder Woman was annoying especially not using more characters related to the comic. It feels like they dumbed down the whole concept just to reach a more general audience
I was in love at first sight with Zatanna December 1980, with her cover story in DC Blue Ribbon Secret Origins Digest. DC really hasn't given her a good run, and Identity Crisis was criminal maltreatment.

Nah, because then they'll write her going crazy/evil and needing to be put down like a lot of Wanda story arcs.
@@theblocksays Not in that way. Wanda was like that in the comics, Zantana wasn't. I meant in terms of power scale.
She is canonically stronger than wanda
Ok....we'll wait for feminism 4.0 to come along, let her find out her father isn't her father, put her in an incestuous relationship with her brother, and turn a boring/bland background character in an overhyped, overexposed drain on public sanity...
(BTW...House of M...was supposed to be yet another showcase of, "Maybe humans NEED to be a LITTLE PANICKED about what happens if mutants go insane." Like the Onslaught Saga.
But since people gotta "people" we get "House of M ver WTF"....(Wandavision).......
....now that said....WHY would you want to do that to one of the top 3 female characters DC created????
@@jourdonpatron212 Scarlet Witch is much more powerful than Zatanna currently.
What about her cousin Zachary Zatara? He hasn't had any appearances in any show Zatanna's in.
I've felt this way about Zatanna and Magik from Marvel for a long time! At least Magik is showing up more nowadays, but Zatanna def needs more love frfr.
Zatanna is never given enough credit. There is clearly a chance to have a good mystical storyline they have been avoiding. They also keep nerfing her with the “lack of confidence/fear of her power” tropes
I def agree, Zatanna deserves more respect, I also think that Starfire, Raven and Black canary deserve more respect too.
Zatanna is peak. She deserve a lot more attention then just popping up here and there

The magical aspect of DC underated just like the vampire aspect of marvel … it’s there but everyone forgets about it
For real, the supernatural/magic side of comics is always pushed aside in favor of the action side.

It's not that Zantana is undeserving of a solo project, just in this day and age DC WOULD FUMBLE HARD
I honestly hate how they disrespect my girl Zatanna she should be on par with the scarlet witch
I'll take her as a founding member over Cyborg
Four of the founding six are pretty important in various ways so I'd disagree. Batman is the bar you have to clear to be a superhero, Superman is the role model, Green Lantern depends on version much like Flash but they usually work as the Rule book and Moral Compass respectively. Martian Manhunter and Wonder Woman are fairly interchangeable with a few others but they still need to be swapped with powerhouses.

Bro she's iconic asf.
James did say he's gonna bring more underdog characters to the forefront so let's just hope Zatanna is the one of em.

So glad you posted this video, Zatanna really is one of the best magical characters and it’s so sad to see how DC treats her
Always liked Zatanna. a stage preformer magician themed superhero is rad.
Though I wish makers focused more of her magic on stage preformance like magic instead of magic laser beams and stuff. More illusions, throwing. playing cards, sucking peoples into her hat, pulling some monster out of her hat, mirror tricks, etc.
As a zatanna fan, her getting so much disrespect hits me like a bunch of bricks
Then you understand how Wonder Woman fans feel like 😢
I think a good example of Zatanna mixing with the main heroes is the JL Heroes video game. That JLU episode was great… but Zatanna definitely needs more love along with many other top tier DC heroes.

Deathstroke beats up everyone, even people who should be able to kill him in two seconds. He is the Batman of costumed villains.
Zatanna is my favorite DC character hands down, no question. I hated how they treated her in Justice League Dark. They did great with her in early Young Justice, until she grew up and had her students which was just dumb.
Let’s all hope James Gunn and DC Studios to characters like Zatanna and many other great characters.
At least Zatanna got a webtoon before Wonder Woman

They tend to make Raven the default magic heavy in stories, media etc. i like zatana DC has so much cool stuff, maybe too much as they clearly dont know what to do with everything.
Thinking about it, yeah if they make her goth looking like they sorta did in the animation recently, she cant out “goth” raven and becomes somewhat redundant. Zatana should fill the middle between Raven and dr fate. Im not sure how u modernise her outfit properlly so it can thread that needle properlly but there are likely good versions in the comics that could be adapted. Just my two cents. Solid video.
Never forget that the original Trinity was Superman, Sandman and Zatara.
Paul Dini should run DC. Not in film or tv but the entire brand.

so many people have wanted female jld members getting their own story too, but the top two in demand are definitely raven and zatanna. like, one of the most powerful magic users just to get nerfed every time when she could literally have been such a huge help in major fights, or raven as the daughter of a literal demon always just being tossed back and forth between the trigon and human side and killed and resurrected, rinse and repeat, really just gets old for me.

DC Vertigo was heavily focused on the magical side of the DC Universe, unfortunately they started hiring certain people that were more focused on political messaging to write on their stuff and subsequently closed down.

Zatanna is the most underrated character in DC. Green Lantern is my favorite but Zatanna is more underrated. DC ladies who need comics focus and \or an animated series:
*WONDER WOMAN* (it's been decades, you've officially run out of excuses for not giving her a cartoon, Kite-Man and Peacemaker have their own shows).
Zatanna (Don't turn her into a woman John Constantine, let her be her own thing, maybe they end up working together on a few cases, and their differences of ideology are challenged, but also in a way that doesn't portray Zatanna's idealism as naïveté.)
Black Canary (give her a superhero family outside of Green Arrow's)
Vixen (expand on the lore of the Tantu Totem, maybe there are other Totems like in the CW shows, but each Totem is connected to a real-life god from an actual African religion (this one would have to be done very carefully and with support from various experts on African cultures.)
Faith (have her psychic powers open up mindscapes and she goes on psychic adventures, or lean into the D.E.O. connections and have her question her morals)
Natasha Irons\Steel
Kimiyo Hoshi\Dr. Light
Hawkgirl. (sci-fi fantasy swashbuckling space adventure with her possibly questioning the idea of the reincarnation cycle and whether or not she and Carter are their own individuals outside of being simple reincarnations)
Starfire (Sadly, Teen Titans Go has done more for her character outside of the Titans than most DC comics.)
Raven (maybe something involving the Nightforce, just written a thousand times better)
Zatanna with purple hair is the best version for me
My frustation is DC always shoehorning Constantine when the story is focused on Zatanna and the writer tends to make Constantine steal the spotlight from her
Ya know, the funny thing is that the concept of Zatanna and Bruce being close friends originally started in TAS that later got incorporated in the comics during the early 2000s.
I liked the Justice League Dark movie, but using Batman instead of Wonder Woman was annoying especially not using more characters related to the comic. It feels like they dumbed down the whole concept just to reach a more general audience
I like Zatanna and while I do think she deserves better i don't see that happening unless fans ask for more supernatural heroes.
