  • Martian Manhunter is has become a very underrated and under-appreciated character in DC Comics over the years and it's quite unfortunate. As I and many other comments in the video will tell you, Manhunter has so much potential to be a fantastic character with so much to offer.

    Martian manhunter works best when He was Jon Jones, working in Middletown police station as detective with Diane maede and them having love -hate relationship and solving weird cases. That's the best portrayal of Martian Manhunter in DC comics.

    I want to add that they don't do enough with him being a detective. It mostly only comes up as a reference. Imagine a run were he has to solve cosmic level mysteries. That's another thing. He just doesn't have enough of his own consistent runs.

    Yeah he totally gets nerfed all the time. Its because he's such a powerful character and most writers are too lazy to write a good enough foil for him.

    I only discovered your channel after this already was out, but as he's arguably my favorite DC hero, here's some of my takes:
    1. Martian Manhunter is Superman taken to further extreme.
    He is very powerful and is limited by one extremely crippling weakness, but he has more different kinds of abilities than Superman (at least since they stopped just making up new powers for Superman like in the older comics) and his weakness is also way more accessible than Superman's. So there is even more creativity available for how to use him in a story, but also a much more believable way to make life difficult for him because his weakness is much more prevalent, you don't keep asking where people keep getting kryptonite from, fire is everywhere.
    He similarly is the last of his kind that escaped his dying world and is an outsider on Earth, but Superman grew up on Earth, looks human, and there are actually various other Kryptonians that survived via other means or were cloned or came from other worlds. Martian Manhunter has... Miss Martian, who is a white Martian rather than a green one, which is potentially a point of conflict depending on the storyline. So Martian Manhunter is much more alone and out of place on Earth, and he experienced the destruction of his world and the loss of his family much more directly than Superman did, such as in the storylines where his weakness to fire is actually the memories/trauma of losing his entire race causing him to mentally shut down.
    2. Like a few people have mentioned already, a storyline focusing on his time in disguise as a detective either before the Justice League is formed or possibly even after as a way to maintain his created human life is perfect for his character and would make a great TV series as well.
    Similar to Superman, a direct physical threat isn't usually the best way to go with a very powerful character (or at least not all the time, and ideally something you build up to), but instead you want to challenge them in other ways and connect strongly into their character and motivations. His powers are very interesting for a detective character (mind powers, shapeshifting, phasing through matter, invisibility, flight, etc...), but at the same time he is very limited by factors such as trying not to blow his cover, having to find evidence and believable ways for how he acquired it even if he knows who the criminal is, trying to fit in with human society, the constant presence of fire in everyday life, and of course the biggest thing: being faced with horrific crimes and tragedy that remind him of his own loss as part of his job (which he may not have much say in if he assumes the identity of someone and therefore has to take up their job to maintain his cover). A character that has to wrestle and work through their own trauma and who is heroic out of a deep empathy of wanting to spare others from what he has gone through while at the same time trying to find a place in the world despite his own otherness and fear of being rejected and driven out of what life he has built so far. And of course the eventual decision to take on an official superhero role and potentially the difficulty of balancing those two parts of his life. There is amazing potential there.
    3. The main reason he is so under-appreciated is because so often when he is featured in a story that the general public/casual fan witnesses, the writers side-step the majority of his core character dilemmas.
    When he is shown as always in hero form, only in team-ups with other heroes, and typically at the Watchtower isolated from people, he is left distant from humanity and from the human experience, which is part of his character, but by leaving him distant it is harder for people to relate to him and learn about and enjoy his character. By putting him into scenarios of regular human life, he becomes way more relatable while not losing that sense of distance because he still feels fundamentally out of place and it will show, if anything even more so due to the contrast. His interaction with Superman's human family in the animated series is a great example of the ideal scenario where he is actually accepted by people and can eventually trust them enough to let down his façade a bit and truly be at ease, but it's obviously is not a common experience for him.

    I like how some adaptions make him start as General Snawick show him getting used to life on earth over time in his show, then have him realize the villain behind the destruction of Mars is back and realizing he alone isn't enough to take down this villan and have him recruit Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and the others to take down the threat and form the Justice League

    J’onn definitely needs better villains. A reoccurring named white Martian would be a good start. Maxima who usually has eyes for Superman might be a good choice to & bring about a Cat woman/ Batman relationship for J’onn. More fights with other notable telepaths like Starro & Despero would also help.
    Some form of fire centric opponent (maybe a magical one?) to take advantage of his weaknesses.
    Also finally a selfish pick, Ares. Yes this would be a team up with Wonder Woman but how has the last son of Mars not yet helped fight God of War Mars? (Plus due to J’onn’s lifespan you could set this at any point in human history).

    Honestly, if they're not honna use him on the Justice League, then Black Adam should form his own. "Martian Manhunter" J'onn J'onzz and other seeming outcasts like "Doctor Fate" Kent Nelson, "Hellblazer" John Constantine, "Etrigan" Jason Blood, Plastic Man, "Green Lantern" Alan Scott, Swamp Thing, and "Green Arrow" Oliver Queen should be the Roster. They deal with all the Mystical and Raw Threats on Earth and in the Multiverse. Maybe, Black Adam leaves to protect his Homeland. You can then have Phantom Stranger join and have Mister Terrific guest appear sometimes. DC already did Justice League Dark with the Magic side of Earth. The Terrifics have been done. This proposed Squad could be named Retribution or something along those lines.

    Martian Manhunter should be a horror comic. He should be a "monster" that hunts and takes down evil humans. The perspective should be on the evil people and we follow them in their evil doings and watch as they grow to fear the threat of the Martian Manhunter who will inevitably get his target. Since it is a horror genre now, he would be allowed to kill these people.

    I totally understand what you mean about the New 52. No one hates DC like DC fans, and when those comics were coming out we were really critical towards them. I'll always say that New 51 was designed to get teenagers to start reading comics and I was a teen and it got me to read comics. So it worked. Then again I can still remember not liking things like Superman and Wonder Woman being a thing. So it had highs and lows.

    I remembered there was one Lego justice league film in which the Legion of doom found Martian Manhunter in area 52 (a facility that replaced area 51) and they took advantage of the rage he had from being captured by humanity to turn him against the justice league. But once he learned how his “saviors” wanted to enslave humanity, he decided to assist the justice league to amend for his error. I think that would be a great way to introduce Martian Manhunter.
    Have him start off as a misguided villain. That gives you a chance to show how powerful he is as he’s able to catch the entire justice league offguard, and when he joins the heroes, it’s not out of love for humanity, but out of guilt, for potentially dooming another world. From there, he could form a legitimate friendship with some members of the league, and chooses to join their ranks and slowly, but surely begins to love earth and it’s people.

    I think the comment that said he needs better villains is true to a lot of superheroes. There are the ones like Batman, Superman and even the Flash, who all have such a great rouges gallery, that you could make a trilogy without using their arch nemesis (could, not should) and there are the superheroes, that either don't have memorable villains, or they don't have enough villains to fill a trilogy, like J'onn J'onzz, Wonder Woman (you can do the old gods, cheetah and then you need to get creative).

    • @tyrellmultimedia
      @tyrellmultimedia  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I think a big problem with a lot of writers today is the lack of creativity with other villains/characters or more obscure characters in the rogues gallery. It feels many people don't like putting in effort to create compelling stories if their name isn't Joker, Lex Luthor, etc.

      @@tyrellmultimedia So true. Even in the DCEU all the villains were the most well known ones. But that was untill James Gunn arrived and gave us his Suicide Squad. Full of obscure characters who would never have made it on the big screen, but now are some of the more popular DC characters (eg. Peacemaker). I hope he'll continue this habit of his into the DCU.

      @@barnabasgalantai4401I think Wonder Woman could definitely hold a trilogy tbh. Ares, Circe and Maxwell Lord would likely do well. Your right about most DC heroes tho. Alot of Marvel ones have this issue as well tbh. Outside of Batman, Spiderman, Flash, X-Men, Justice League, Avengers,(as a team) and Superman alot of heroes are lacking. There are some good rogues galleries like Daredevil, Green Lantern, Moon Knight, Nightwing, Teen Titans, Iron Man, Cap, Wonder Woman, Thor, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Shazam, Hulk etc. but they just don't feel complete tbh.

    hey late to the party, but I got 2 takes and one of them ties into the other. I think that the character martian manhunter is caught up in racism and is a mirror of superman. Like they both are the last of their kind, hailing from another planet with vast great powers, the difference being Supermans blessed to look like us well martian manhunter is green and different. Secondly I think Dc could make a fun thought provoking movie about this concept using martian manhunter as the main character, and still get levity and lighter moments out of it from things like oreos, the television transformation stuff, and could steal the ant man recap scene stuff where manhunters just disguised as different people doing it.

    here is my hot take
    i think if john was to get his own game it should be a detective game
    let me explain
    well i do think johns power set wood work well in an open world action game {witch is what most super hero games are nowadays}
    i think people wood just compare him to superman and just say that is to similar to a superman game
    he also doesn't have an iconic city to call his own
    but he's a detective
    and his abilities are well suited to a detective game
    his camouflage can be used for infiltration
    his shapeshifting abilities can also be used for stealth but can in addition be used to get information out of people
    like in the shapeshifting detective
    and his telepathy can even be used as a hint system
    and i guess it cude have some sort of combat system
    it also wood solve the villain problem
    in an open world action game it wood be excepted that you wood encounter a large amount of villains to fill out the runtime
    but in a detective game you wood only need one
    and that can even be an original character

    He's not terribly interesting, and since we almost only see him as part of an ensemble, he HAS to get nerfed because his power set makes him way too OP...he shares the same issue as Flash...what problem is truly a problem if you have one of those guys standing next to you? Only difference is, they find interesting ways to integrate Flash anyway and it just never feels that way with J'onn...and to state the obvious, he is made redundant by Superman
