  • I am always experimenting and have the latest steps and settings on my website: vipervisuals.net/laser/glasso...
    This is a video of just the steps needed to etch glass yourself on a xTool D1 laser with a 10w head. This is unedited and it only took 12 minutes to do the entire project from cleaning the glass to clean up afterwards, including the burn time. It's fun and easy! I hope you enjoy the same results I am getting. Have fun! The other video is a little more detailed and has a few more tips if you are having any issues. I have used this process on acrylic also. Default 50/50 power and speed.(Higher power at lower speed is creating a nicer effect. See the updated videos. 40mm/s speed - 90 power)
    Glass on the Fly is just that. A quick and easy way to laser etch glass without painting or applying any masking materials.

    I am confused as I am getting interested in the xTool D1, but I am seeing other TH-cam videos where they paint the glass for laser engraving but you don't paint the glass. Is this a personal perference?

    Did you put the side of the glass down with oil on it or facing up? I didn't catch you saying which way you place it? I recently purchased the SnapMaker 2.0, have not used the lazer yet but want to try something like this.

      Hello William. A little oil on the inside of the cup and the backer piece right up against it. An oil sandwich.. Talked to a few lately that have a SnapMaker. May have to look into one.

    Will this machine engrave on mugs or tall glass style with handle with the rotary attachment?

    • @viperdesigned
      @viperdesigned  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It will, but you will need another 3rd party attachment to do it. It holds the cup up and lets the handle swing around. It will take a little creativity, but it can be and has been done. You can search etsy for xTool or D1 attachments.

      The new rotary from xTool looks promising. Thinking of getting a Laser engraver and have been doing a lot of research, and as of now the xTool D1 with air assist and possibly the new 20W laser head is looking to be my choice.

    • @viperdesigned
      @viperdesigned  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      HI Joseph, Thanks for stopping by! I have seen that and did try, but there are so many other dangers with that. Lasers and glues don't get along too well and who knows what kind of toxins that puts off, so I'll stay away from it myself. Clean up isn't much fun either. I know. Just use more chemicals and it's easy. :) I'm working on an update for this now and hope to get it posted soon. Thanks again and you will have fun with it when you get it. They are highly addictive. :)

    How do I find the grey scale to run? Can I do this on the front of a glass mirror. Ty

    • @viperdesigned
      @viperdesigned  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mirrors you will want to do from the backside. You burn the coating off and etch the glass from the back. Be sure to mirror your image so it comes out right. Glass is clear and the laser won't focus on it from the front. There are plenty of people doing them and should a bunch of videos. You don't have to do any special preparations or anything. They are rather simple to do. I have my own grayscales that I use. I have them posted on this page that will be getting moved to my new site soon, vipervisuals.net/laser/downloadables.html

    Hello friend, first, thanks for the video; I have two questions:
    1) The black paper (cardboard) that you use under the glass, is it to replace any black paint (spray) in place of the painting technique?
    2) After you apply the oil to the glass, do you clean it almost completely before etching? Thanks

    • @viperdesigned
      @viperdesigned  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Dan, Thanks! I've been doing these long before the spray paint technique. They couldn't stand the smell.. lol
      The 'etching action' happens between the backing paper and the glass. The laser needs something to hit(focus on, some call it). It goes right through the glass.
      The oil or soap stay on and you engrave with it still on. It helps keep the glass a little cooler and helps move the smoke out from under the glass. It also helps with clean up after.

    Hi! Is that possible the light bounce on the glass and return to the engraving and damage the engraving lens whit this method???

    • @viperdesigned
      @viperdesigned  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not with glass. It is clear and the dark backer stops the beam. If you tried it with a mirror, I'm sure there would be problems. I have a 10w D1 that I got back in Sept without the extra lens and it still works like the day I got it. I do these on a regular basis..

    what is the purpose of the oil? Keep the paper from sticking? I've tried this technique without as much success as this but no oil either.

    • @viperdesigned
      @viperdesigned  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't use anything on smaller pieces. The oil or dish soap help keep the glass cool and help with clean up. Smoke film cleans up easier with it. I have one on the table now and going to do another video. I hear the same thing all the time and don't understand. I just place the backing paper down with the glass on top and go. Couldn't be easier. Some have experimenting with using a piece of painted metal for a backer. Haven't tried it yet but they have been getting impressive results and it's reusable. Paint a FLAT piece of metal black and place your glass on it to engrave.

  • @jamestaylor8509

    Is it etching on the front or backside of the glass?

    • @dkbrown1060
      @dkbrown1060 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The etching is done on the back side of the glass between it and the backer material. You can mirror your image and it will be right on the front. You can use it either way.

    • @viperdesigned
      @viperdesigned  ปีที่แล้ว

      It helps to keep the glass cooler on heavy burn projects and with some posterboards, it helps keep the smoke film from staining the glass. It is easier to clean. I don't use anything on my smaller projects. Latest info is on this page. vipervisuals.net/laser/glassonthefly.html
