    Informative, I learned a lot from this but surely all you needed was a wooden "back" circle with a wider outer diameter to level out the turn

    • @thelaserchannel1
      @thelaserchannel1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching- I thought this too but the diameter of the large rim of the glass must match the large diameter of the of the wooden donut so the glass doesn't hop while turning- then the glass surface can be made level to the laser to keep focus. Have a great day!

    I have a similar set up to engrave glasses, but I found some simple ways of fixing them. I got a handful of rare earth magnets from Harbor Freight. I made an L shaped guide to hold my rotary drive in place which is about one inch thick and skirts around the backside and right side of my rotary. It has magnets inset to hold it in place. I have a 4 inch wide wedge with inset magnets that I use to raise the back side of the rotary drive. The magnets hold everything in place to my sheet metal base. I use my magnets to hold work in place while I'm engraving or cutting. They are cheap and work great. Good video! thanks

    • @thelaserchannel1
      @thelaserchannel1  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Cindy- I haven't cover engraving tumblers on the channel- yet. On thick coated tumblers like YETI start with 55mm/s at 90% power and other tumblers 55mm/s at 50% power- the brand and color of the tumbler will greatly affect the settings. It's always recommended to have an extra tumbler for test engraving. After engraving clean with a white "Magic Pad" or something like acetone. Hopefully the listed settings will be a great starting point for you!

    If you are going to do any reasonable volumes with the same type of glass I would resize the wooden donut to make the glass level.

    • @thelaserchannel1
      @thelaserchannel1  ปีที่แล้ว

      The donut does need to be the diameter of the largest part of the glass to make the glass roll straight on the rotary attachment. If the donut is made larger the glass will hop around on the rotary due to the different diameter of the glass and donut. Good question and thank you for asking!

    What machine do you use? I am wondering what the differences are between laser heads and which one I should start with. I see that XTool has a "Two in One" tool. What would be the advantage and/or disadvantage of that tool? - Rick

    • @thelaserchannel1
      @thelaserchannel1  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching! It's nice that Xtool offers the Two in One option, it's one less machine and lowers the overall cost of owning two separate machines; on the flip side there's swapping out the laser modules and the plug in connectors- I can't recall what the connectors look like but I hope they are made to plug and unplug over the life of the machine. In my shop I run Co2, lots of Laser Diode machines, and for metal work I run a 50watt Fiber laser. On option to check out is a Fiber laser in the 20watt power range- the cost is dropping and Fiber lasers are crazy fast and make short work of any metal work.

    So can you do a glass bottles with liquid inside or does it have to be empty?

    • @thelaserchannel1
      @thelaserchannel1  ปีที่แล้ว

      I recommend engraving on empty bottles, but I never tried a filled and sealed bottle. Two things come to mind. 1- Will the liquid inside the bottle heat up and cause the cap to pop off. 2- A big concern would be secondary engraving on the inside of the bottle keeping in mind the engraving process is micro shattering the surface of the glass and I'm not sure I would want to run the risk of tiny bits of the glass inside the bottle. When the glassware has food contact our shop only engraves the non food side.

      Hi Jan Mo- I'm using the D1 10watt non pro version. For Stainless Steel I use black tempera paint to etch the metal. I spray 2-3 light coats of the tempera paint to produce a dark etching using these settings: 5-10 mm/s at 100%. You do not need to use tempera paint but it does produce a much darker finish- hope this helps!

    • @thelaserchannel1
      @thelaserchannel1  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not- but I would recommend engraving the surface closed to the laser module. This means you might need to "Flip Horizontal" to engrave on what would be the "bottom" of the glass if you want the glass with the engraving on the bottom. If your engraving is on the top surface there's no need to "Flip Horizontal". Hope this helps!

    Might be kind of a dumb question for you, but if you were to get a laser engraver with the proper ventilation and enclosure for it, would I be able to leave it unattended in my garage while I work on other things inside? I would really like to get one of these but if I need to be present at all times it’s running I’m not sure it’s for me. I just can’t spend hours a day attending to it just to monitor it. Maybe I could install a smoke detector like you have? Please let me know your thoughts on this, thanks!

    • @thelaserchannel1
      @thelaserchannel1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have a very good question and it's one I hear often! Since making this video I received a Comgrow enclosure; it has a vent hole and is made from flame resistant material- I like it. A machine that's running should not be left unattended- fires can start up in a matter of seconds. There's many stories of people working the laser room and fires starting. Enclosures tend to leak a little smoke and tend to trip smoke detectors. I can only offer to practice safety, be in the laser area at all times, and to find something to pass the time while the laser is running.

    • @thelaserchannel1
      @thelaserchannel1  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a very good question- I and other laser engravers use a paint as a masking agent. Without the paint the laser energy will pass through the glass without marking or engraving the glass. The paint absorbs enough of the laser energy and transfers most of the energy to the glass allowing for the engraving. Diode lasers need an opaque masking agent while Co2 lasers can get by with far less masking agent. Hope this helps!

      Thank you for the info! While I wish all the devices worked- it's "sounding" ;) like more of the issue is with mobile/tablet devices are affected. I would encourage you try a computer- we would love to hear if that works for you! The current video containing xTool information is currently being reviewed for release, xTool requested we run the draft version past them for review. We have updated the audio work flow to hopefully not have this issue again.

    don't you have to mirror the object??

    • @thelaserchannel1
      @thelaserchannel1  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not when engraving on the top surface. I like to practice using blue painters tape at a low power level to check placement and size- this is also a great time to also check if mirroring the image makes sense for the project! Thanks for watching!

      I hear you... is it too soft? I know it sounds a little "tinny". I had a hardware setting off during recording... and didn't realize until post processing. Can you checkout the video with the American flag and let me know if that video is better? th-cam.com/video/E7PYqPQdcrM/w-d-xo.html I'm always striving to make better content!

    Why didn't you just use the black paper in the glass rather than spray paint it?

    • @thelaserchannel1
      @thelaserchannel1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At the time of filming the black tempera paint was the best water based masking method. I've read about the method you mentioned and it would very interesting to try on non- food items. Using the black paper method would engraving the inside of the glass- the food side and it's our shop's practice never to engrave on the food side. Food can collect or stain on the engraving not to mention the engraving is actually micro shattering the glass.

    Why didn't you just turn the glass around so that the taper was a the wide end? Glass would have been straight then. And then flip the image

    • @thelaserchannel1
      @thelaserchannel1  ปีที่แล้ว

      This is the way the glass looks when 4 points of contact to the rotary are the same diameter and the glass is level to the laser head. The glass will roll smoothly on the rotary with the donut- without it the glass will shift and hop on the rotary.

    Interesting how your display is with black card stock but you want us to use cold compound or tempura. Keep your secrets to yourself aye. Also fix the audio. There’s no sounds except static through the whole video

      Thanks for watching- the black card stock is better see the engraving! There is a method of transfer engraving using black card stock but that engraves the inside of the drinkware which is not recommended. Yup- sorry about the audio. All videos after have much better quality- I remixed the audio- here's a link th-cam.com/video/GYKl_dNWznc/w-d-xo.html

      I'm not sure what he's talking about as the sound is excellent to me and the black cardstock was just so you could see the final image. I'm curious as to how this Dollar tree paint washes off as some can be difficult?

      Great vid! Thank you. Curious why the need for special paint. I do not have an air sprayer so I would likely go the route of the spray paint. Any reason that inexpensive black krylon stay paint won’t work just as effectively?

    So I stopped by to see you engrave a glass, I do not have the same laser as you, and I suppose most folks have different Lasers, So why waste time showing me how to adjust your roller, makes no sense. Get to the engraving part , Or perhaps title How to engrave on MY laser. Might look at the Atomstack roller. yours is kind of janky.
