This drill is fantastic. Provides the "ball on a string" feel you sometimes hear about because of the momentum. Add the hanger for wrist conditions (which makes it simpler to visualize what the wrists need to do as compared to the impact snap)and wow!
I have trouble shallowing my downswing so this is a great drill for me. I kept hitting the bucket on my backswing and in order to miss it I felt like I was moving my hands too far to the outside. I moved the bucket and concentrated on keeping my backswing wider than normal and that helped me drop the club inside from the top. Thanks for this great drill!
This has helped me tremendously! Thanks Eric! I'm hitting ball more consistently and for the first time feel like I am on the right path. I have not played in about 6 years, but have been going to the range for the 3 or 4 months and this particular lesson along with some of your other lessons are beginning to pay off.
Been coming over the top for years now !…..really good video, drill and instruction. Went to range used the ball basket exactly as you say - hello baby draw with great ball flight. Many thanks.
Eric your tips are great, straightforward easy to understand. Ive been plating 21 years 8 handicap and very very close to quitting the game for good, dead serious.
This one move had changed my golf swing!! So clever and so easy. I literally watched your video went into my garden and practised a figure of 8 my next three rounds came down by 8 shots!!! My irons and my woods and my driver!! So simple but the most amazing move. Thank you
I had seen a video talking about this some time ago but never gave it much thought until recently. Totally transformed by ability and confidence on the downswing. I wish this had been explained or shown to me 25 years ago. Its so simple. Everyone should practice this.
I'm working on finding different things to shallow and stop coming over the top. Tried this with a soccer ball in the backyard and feels very easy to do. Will take it to the range and hit balls with this method. Hope it helps.
Soccer ball should work great---good one! hope this one helps. Its exaggerated for sure.....but if you're someone who goes too far INSIDE on the BACKSWING which leads to that over the top then FLIPPING that and doing the exact opposite should help change the motion of the shaft Key here is the SHAFT goes OUTSIDE here.....NOT THE HANDS Hope that helps
I look at all your videos. Very sound advice. Just wanted to share my latest attempt to shallow the club. I habitually have a steep downswing when there is a ball in front of me. Take it away and I can shallow the club. On video my right hand stands up out of extension at the top of the swing. It's the "hit" impulse to the max. I've taken two years of lessons at Golf Tec, and no disrespect to them, I still have a steep downswing and can't hit a draw. Today I was fooling around with my grip and found a (possible) correction to my problem. I placed my left hand in a very strong (four knuckle) position, my right closer to neutral, the V aimed at my right eye. To my amazement, my left hand didn't allow the right to push it over and the club shallowed nicely. I still have to work on setup and ball position because the ball was starting straight and moving left, but I'm encouraged. Will have to wait and see if it works on the golf course. Have you run across this in any of your students?
Hey Dan! I would really need to see your before grip and action to confirm what's really going on compared to what you are explaining here. I would also have to see the second grip (where it is compared to what you feel) and see... I have seen a lot of different combinations of grips effect wrist angles and consequentially effect shaft angles.
This a fantastic drill, great video. Something you can do to compliment it, is to stand a fraction open to the target, and you'll feel like in order to hit target, you have to get on the inside even more.
This is a great drill. It is the best way to get the feel for shallowing. I’ve done it with a cone but basically the same this is more descrete on the Range lol 👌🏼
Excellent instruction Eric. I have been playing for 30 years, presently off 3 handicap, but have never really been a student of the swing, never had a lesson and relied purely on feel. However, I can see in this, where my early extension comes from. My swing is exactly what you are trying to cure here. Club head in line with the hands in the takeaway...GOOD...BUT...shaft under the forearm!!! Downswing, the shaft is over the forearm and too steep...and I'm pretty sure that this is the primary cause of my early extension and inconsistency when my timing is off...would you agree?
Thanks Neil! It certainly could be! Would need to see your swings on video to say for sure without any guessing👍 If you don't get it sorted, send us your swings at www.cogornogolf.com and we can fix easily!
Great drill, Eric. I find shallowing the driver with teed up ball is essential and greatly enhances my drives however with my irons I can get quite steep (still approaching from the inside) and hit flush draws. Do you find shallowing is more important for driver vs irons?
Thanks! I would say big picture...it's equally important. Since we are wanting to swing from low and inside and hit UP on the driver, one could argue there's more importance there👍
Great drill Eric..I have a problem with swallowing out the club.not bad with iron..but not to good with driver!..can you do this drill with driver?..thanks
@@CogornoGolf I dare say none of your students can hook the cover off the ball the way I can at times …but i enjoy doing the shallowing drills anyway. I have the hardest time Fading and Slicing.
Hey Eric, some days I can hit the ball really well with the figure 8 feel and sometimes it causes me skank. And reasons why sometimes doing this feel would cause a a slight hozzle strike ?
Hey Eric, you know what’s interesting? I have the opposite issue. If I try to promote a very intentional draw, I’ll take the club away a bit too inside, but in the downswing that correlates to a perfectly shallow swing. Whereas if I takeaway directly back (my normal straight shot) or even outside (to exaggerate a fade), my downswing nets out much steeper. How can I approach fixing this?
If the inside takeaway leads to a perfect downswing.....I would just do that....and be OK with the takeaway being inside. Inside takeaway ONLY a problem IF it causes downswing issues....for you it doesn't....so all good!
Hey Eric, I did this at the range and it felt great, but I took it to the course and I think I forgot to keep rotating my body with my arms connected. Instead I just took my arms back and tried to do the movement you described in the video. Can that cause a slice? Because I was bombing it right all day haha. I even bottomed out my driver a couple times. It felt like I didn't have room is a good way to describe it.
Hey Josh! Thanks for watching!
