    Dear Dr. McDougall,
Our family has been following your diet advice (which my mom knew and taught us) since the '70's. No cancer, or any health issues, at all and there are over 30 of us now, and some are enjoying good health in their mid 90's. Thank you!!

Hello dr mcdougall. I am a conservative christian truck driver from oklahoma. Since meat eating was allowed and even prescribed in the old testament, i had dismissed veganism. But in the garden, or the more perfect state, there was no meat consumption, so maybe God later allowed it since food might be scarce. Anyway, i try to follow truth wherever it leads and it seems in your life so have you. I respect you for that and i think you may be on to something. Your defense of the historical starch diet makes perfect sense to me. Your medical explanation about MS and autoimmunity was quite compelling. I will play that video for my wife when i get home. She has sarcoidosis and i have hashimotos. The last 2 weeks on the road ive been eating grits for breakfast and beans, rice, mashed potatoes or corn for dinner. I dont even miss meat. Ive moved my belt notch to #6 for the 1st time in years. After watching your video my brother and sister in law are adopting your diet. Thank you dr for standing up to the absolute evil in the medical system. God bless you, sir!

The old school Southern diet -- lots of seasonal veggies slow cooked and eaten with beans, rice, and potatoes is easy to accomplish as long as you leave out the dairy and fat. It's easy to make low fat and delicious cornbread. I have discovered that smoked paprika and garlic will season your greens as well as any kind of sidemeat. Grits with okra and corn and tomatoes have replaced grits with fried eggs and bacon. I'm never hungry and am slowlyand steadily losing weight even though I am still not 100 percent perfect. Hang in there!!! Just as an aside, the traditional Biblical diet is based largely on grains, veggies, fruits, and legumes. Meat was reserved for high holy days. Even people in the middle East now eat lots of veggies for breakfast. Hummus and salad is a typical Israeli breakfast!!

Good on you! People don't think about how God didn't change human biology in any way after they got kicked from the Garden. Humans have always been, and still are, herbivores. You could almost think of it like a challenge from a parent to His children. We were naughty so we were kicked out of the house. We had some rough few thousand years but we made it. Now we've grown up enough that we have the ability and opportunity to make a home very similar to what we had before. We could make a similar Garden and live once again on the beautiful bounty we were always meant to eat.

I haven't consumed dairy for 50 years. My Doc told me I'd develop osteoporosis. At 68, so far so good - perfectly normal bones. I gave up animal products over a dozen years ago. I get my blood drawn every year - all measurements in the normal range and I don't have to take any "elderly-medications". BMI is 23. I eat a whole food plant based diet i.e., McDougall's plan and many of Mary's recipes. I eat whenever I am hungry and eat until I am satiated. I am perfectly healthy. I never diet.
Think about it - do cows drink cows milk? No, they don't. Humans are the only being that consumes the lactations of a different species. None of the grazing mammals of earth - giraffe's, hippos, chimpanzees, deer & elk, elephants, mice, etc. consume milk of any species after weaning. This is a great lifestyle!

I’ve tried cycling veggies, I tried switching up my legume’s- nothing. I’m so gassy, my stomach gets bloated and I get pain. I feel healthy and light in my feet and definitely immediately dropped weight. My stomach just hurts allllll the time.

Returning to watching McDougall lectures after what's been a while, I remember why I found watching them so healing, not just from the physical perspective - if their conclusions are applied. I find them healing to watch because they're a source of truth and because Dr. McDougall is so inspiring in the way he fights for the truth. He's a rebel and a truth teller and I find the presence of rebels and truth tellers most comforting of all when I feel like I'm lost. To be around, be it just in thought, someone who knows what's what and who's not afraid to say it, and to be around someone I can learn from, and who reminds me just how great of a contribution one individual can make to this world, it fills me with feelings of hope. And there's so much love in his communication, love for those whose wellbeing he's tried to save - humans and animals alike - such clear constant displays of love for his family, love for his heroes, love for the planet. So much respect for this man. Wish I could even be 1% of the person he is. Thank you Dr. McDougall.

    Wonderful talk on protein requirements!
I changed from vegetarian to vegan in Oct, 2021 thanks to a utube lecture of John McDougall
What a blessing! I am 65 and a long-distance runner. I am a tennis coach on weekends and never felt fitter! No aches and no knees pain after exercise.
Unfortunately most people don't GET it! And doctors in India are not bothered what their patients eat. And some recommend a high protein diet.
Pediatricians too. Dairy protein for kids is promoted.
When will the world change this wrong Mindset.
Each of us listening to this lecture must quote these truths in whatever way we can!

I don’t think I commented on this talk but it is one of the only places where the science is being brought out for any person, no matter their background, can understand. Not only that, there is solid explanations and examples of primary source material and how anyone can now access and learn about the research papers to check for factual information being given. Learning about one’s own body, its functions and what the processes are for common diseases is so helpful for people to be able to make informed decisions on their health and their family’s health. There is solid explanations much bs out there that learning the tools to not get scammed is essential because in the end people are out there to make money anyway they can, even if it’s made up ideas instead of fact.
This basic intro to protein is the most important thing to learn of because it has the greatest impact on quality of life.
Just being shown what has happened over time to science by industry is an eye opener that lets people start asking questions about how they know things are true.
I would love for science to no longer be trampled for ideas and beliefs that do so much harm.
Thank you for taking the time to teach people the basics that can protect them from being taken advantage of. ❤

I wish my brother would have listened to Dr McDougall and other plant-based doctors. He died a few months ago of pancreatic cancer. He had just retired, was in his mid-60s, and was otherwise seemingly healthy, except for high blood pressure. He ate keto/paleo for the last about 20 years. It's so sad. I tried to give him books, argue sometimes, etc., but he was a stubborn guy who thought he knew better than his little sister (me).

I had high blood pressure the Dr said for me to change my diet and go low sodium and he would check my blood pressure in a month. So when I was I was talking to my sister she told me that maybe I should try the plant based diet that my mom was on. So my mom has became my couch for the diet. Her diet was the starch solution. I have been on this diet that for two months now but not only that but I went back to get my blood pressure at it had been retaken when I was on the starch solution for two weeks and my blood pressure was normal. I not only brought down my blood pressure but I had lost 21 pounds within two weeks. I felt good but then when I weighed myself the next week I gained 10 of those back because I ate pasta all week and cooked some days with oil. So know I am not using oil. I was also walking for those two weeks and ever since the fires started I have not been walked by but doing arrobic exercises in my house.😊

I had trouble qualifying for WIC as my kids were too healthy. In fact after getting WIC as a "prevention" against malnourishment my kids tests were worse. We eventually got qualified for food stamps. One thing I can say from experience that eating fake meat only makes you crave actual animal meat. Which leads you back into old habits of eating. It did me. Then I just kept getting stomach and bowel issues. Why? Real meat and fake meat. Had zero issues eating a starch heavy, plant centered diet. My cholesterol went up and my blood pressure too. So bad the doctors threatened to put me on lots of medication if I didn't get it under control. Guess what I did? Fed the cat the meat and I am going back on a McDougall based diet. I may modify it a bit, but basically right from the books I own. I am sick and tired of being sick and tired. I am currently recovering from several broken bones including my clavicle, which needed surgery to fix. I was on my ebike just slowing down for the light when a skateboarder plowed into me and I woke up in the ICU. I am 64 and I was going to work. Eating the McDougall way has allowed me to heal faster than I was. My first set of X-rays after I got out of the hospital showed minimal healing. I quit the meat and focused on starch and vegetables with some fruit and guess what my next set and the CT showed of my brain which was bruised and bleeding at first. 2 weeks between X-rays CT was 3 weeks between the last one at the hospital and the following one. Healing fast. My shoulder had very limited usage at first and now almost back to normal. I should be released to go back to work on Thursday. 8 weeks since the accident. I am so grateful for you guys. If I was still eating a meat based diet, I sincerely doubt I would be as healthy as I am and ready to work. I am a personal shopper at Walmart. So I lift 44 pounds up to chest high on a regular basis. That is what a case of water weighs or a large sack of pet food. I may have to take it easy for a week or two, but I have tested myself with heavier items and with doing most of the lifting with my left I can manage it. One more week of staying at home and I can go back to work. Thank you so much for everything. My doctor's were amazed at the difference in my healing. They didn't say much, just big smiles on their faces. I didn't get a chance to tell them the secret. If they give me a chance I will for sure. ❤

But of course, just as in a non-vegan diet, you need good nutrition through whole plant foods, and sufficient calories. I went to the doctors last week and my total cholesterol was 300. I told him that I follow a WFPB SOS free diet. He said I must have familial high cholesterol. Is there anything that can help this beside cholesterol medicine. I never thought I’d have to face this. I feel so helpless. I’ve tried so hard to stay off medication. My mother and step father both died in their 50’s and I’ve never met my biological father. Growing up with sick parents I’ve tried my best to avoid this. So upsetting.

How is your weight? Maintaining a lower healthy BMI helps cholesterol levels.

@Joan B Did you lower it without drugs? I thought that I wrote some of your post😂
2 years ago I got 280 cholesterol results. Some doctors said that it must be hereditary because my parents have that, and my weight and BMI was good.
One doctor advised to go on statins ASAP. I was only 40 then, and not planning to deal with more drugs for years to come. The doctor who was treating me agreed with me to keep monitoring my blood, and I decided to change and tweak my diet even more.
After about a year more or less, my cholesterol was 180👍👍👍
So I proved that it is not hereditary for me, and it can be controled and lowered by different diet and nutrition.

My husband is on dialysis. His nephrologist is telling him he needs animal protein now. Is this really necessary?

Have a look at Dr. Neal Barnard's video on reversing kidney damage. (Not sure if McDougall has made videos on this). McDougall and Barnard know each other, so I don't think he will mind me mentioning Barnard....."It's the food" -Heather McDougall
