We spoke to Kevin last year at Goodwood FOS but it's great to see even more info on the build process and also how the components are standing up to all the abuse. What an amazing opportunity to teardown the engine with BMW M themselves.
We took a little different approach for our road going 1000hp+ builds but also keeping many of the standard parts because BMW did such a good job designing the S58.

@@bigjdm5460unfortunately, no there’s not. Those Tex2k A80 Supras have as much Toyota in them as the A90 Supra does. Once you start going billet block, new internals, overhauled fuel system, etc it’s no longer the same engine so what it can do from there means nothing besides an arbitrary number. S58s already make way more power on a stock rotating assembly than the 2JZ ever did & the DME isn’t even unlocked yet.

Just killed it with this video! I was looking for head gasket information and came across this and got stuck watching and couldn't stop. Unfortunately I think my head gasket is leaking coolant into the cylinders. Stock engine 30k miles no abuse .... but still we have rusty spark plugs, steam coming out the tail pipes and we are using coolant. Not gonna be fun, she loves her car so I'm gonna have to change the head gasket. I might make a video when I do it.

@@madrx2 biggest complaints people have are the S58 has no low end torque, the B58 is much better for daily driving in that aspect. Comps are known to be uncomfortable to ride in due to how stiff the suspension is. I’ve had the pleasure of driving an X3 M40i and it RIPS. Plus very easy to make more hp with. I would recommend a M40i over a comp unless you live in perfect conditions and have a different daily.

    • @pusb_87english63
      @pusb_87english63 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Test drive, then test drive again, as it’s been said the B58 is a better cruiser in the X3M40I, actually better on motorways as well as it stays in gear, but ………
We don’t buy M cars to cruise about, the S58 wants to be revved and comes alive over 4k
I’ve driven to southern Italy and northern Norway in the middle of winter, this car is capable and I prefer it to softer set ups.
I’ve rung its neck round the Nurburgring and it preformed unbelievably, brakes, engine, suspension the lot.
If your looking for a fast SUV that preforms Pull the trigger and don’t look back, if your looking for a cruiser that glides over bumps and rolls round corners, get an X5 Diesel.
      Enjoy 🤝🏻

I agree with 98% of the chart minus the section on parts availability. There are hundreds of manufacturers of aftermarket parts support for the 2jz that are readily available. Even talking OEM parts, your local Lexus / Toyota dealer has a majority of parts available for a 2jz with the cross platforms like IS300 / LC300 etc. You can even buy a complete 2jz gte rotating assembly shortblock right at a dealer.
The S58 / B58 platform are still ramping up on aftermarket support and it's great to see but I still think the 2JZ section should have been 4-5 stars on parts availability

    • @carboydorifutoparty3976

I'd say the B58 would have more parts available than the S58 since it's been out longer(since 2015) and is in more cars(almost 22 at best other than the supra)than the S58(maybe 5-6 at best)but I'd say that due time since Bmw plans to keep the B58 around a bit threw the 2030s also,I'd say they'd have parts(other than bmw updating them)more available for the B58 in the future more than the S58 unless bmw puts the S58 in more platforms/cars they have now.

From a s14 2JZ owner, of course the S58 is a better motor. We're looking at almost 35 years between the two. IMHO, the S58 BETTER be BETTER with that much time and technology. @@Shane-fh4uuno u can make over 700whp+ on stock internals easily with the B58. The 650whp range is dangerous on certain/early gen B58s that came with the weaker hpfps. The B58s with the stronger hpfp(newer ones)can take that but people usually go port once they start tapping into the 700whp+ range. There are multiple B58s making 700+whp easily and stock internal 800whp B58s are slowly becoming more common.

@@carboydorifutoparty3976 This is news to me. I mean I looked it up it is still pretty much consensus that for safety 600-650 is the highest you should go on stock internals. I also spoke to the tuning experts at Westtuned when I had my B58 gen2 bench unlocked and they had a couple supra builds at 1000HP and they said for sure they would not go above 600 HP for safety without fully built engine. Maybe it can handle 650+ on stock internals but it probably won't last long if you are frequently driving it hard.
I plan to keep my car for 100k miles so even with Stage 2 tune I use 91 oct map with 93 oct gas

It has variable timing and lift, so it's only duration away from being able to essentially have the perfect cam for any RPM. People are quick to throw away parts like this on engine builds to simplify engines because all they care about is the peak power figure, but they miss out on a lot of meat under the curve which is much more important than the power output in an engine that actually gets used.

Any engine can be reliable, it’s up to the owner how he/she takes care of their engine. Change the oil on my N54 every 3500 miles and never had a problem, not even a leak. Even my transmission, changed it every 60k miles. Note, I used Amsoil brands. I sold it at 121k miles and its a 2004 car. 🤷‍♂️ its really up to people how they take care of their car to make it reliable.
