Do I do enough to be worthy of my salary? Yes I'm sure and the people who work with me confirm that.
Am I an enthusiast for this work? No, I'm not.
It's just a way to make a living for me considering my life circumstances.
And why should I be motivated cleaning toilet bowls, facing hidden (sometimes open) disrespect from teachers and students, extra work for free, and physical loads beyond the requirements of the job.
So am I motivated? No and I will immediately change the field of work as soon as something better is exposed.
But I like to go home from work with a clear conscience because I did what I had to do. So I do what I can.

Thank you for sharing your wisdom, Mr. Jeff. You are spot on with this advice.
It was brought to my attention this week that a night shift custodian was taking an hour lunch every night; half hour in the lounge (unpaid) and a half hour going home (paid). I had a conversation with this person, they kept their course of action the same. My superior tasked me to produce a written warning on Thursday, and I'm now scrubbing toilets on a Saturday. The custodian would rather resign than change. You can't modify another person's behavior, only they can.
Thank you for the uplifting message here. I will remember these wise words. Have a blessed day!

      I'm assuming you're a head custodian.
Of course, you can change the worker's behavior!
This is just a management problem. If a worker has plenty of time to eat and go home early, you gotta give him a thoughtful work assignment with something extra within his regular run and responsibility with a fair timing and check on fulfillment.
But if the supervisors or leads don't think about the proper organization of work, leaving the workers the right to do the work as they want and prefer to find fault with the fact that the workers spent a lot of time using restroom or sitting down for a minute to rest, then this is weird.
There was a period in my life after I had covid that I sat down to rest every half hour and still sometimes get dizziness.
But of course, going home earlier without the boss permission is wrong.

@kolbass4319 no I am not a head custodian. I managed a summer crew for several years. Never been a paid head custodian.

I appreciate these so much! Next year I am set to take over the 3 man operation that has run for 30 years at this school. 2 of the elder custodians are retiring or at least that is what they are saying. I will take all of this and use it to be the best leas custodian that I can be and teach the next crew the things I wasn't shown and help them be better than I was in the beginning!

I can't tell you enough how much your videos have helped me. Everything you said in this video about being a lead was right on the money! I started watching your videos about two and a half years ago and you have been an inspiration for me ever since. I know if I am having a bad day I will pull up one of your videos and it take the pressure and stress away. Thank you for validating the work we do!
