Even if people don't like the show, this scene is one of the most emotional scenes in all of star wars imo. Ewan Mcgregors acting and incorporating haydens voice in darth vader was perfect.
@@evilmar2363Well, actually I don't even like TCW and Rebels. I prefer the old EU stuff. So yes, I don't like anything anymore. Not after 2014, and especially not after what they did to my legacy. I mean, my son was a badass Jedi master, and they ruined him.
@@spartacus936 Let's not act like a portion of EU/Legends wasn't hit or miss. I really enjoy legends and I'm pretty upset that some of it is non canon like NULL ARC troopers, but man, it really did fumble the bag for a lot of stuff too lol
@@spartacus936 Also, TCW and Rebels actually takes some stuff from legends and makes it canon like Darth Maul's return, Thrawn, and other things so I can at least thank them for that.
I loved Haden’s delivery. His “I am what remains” sounds so angrily disappointed. He’s a shell of his former self, crippled, burned, every breath he takes is pain as he’s trapped in a mechanical prison, knowing that Obi-Wan bested him. Then as Obi-Wan apologizes to him he gets visibly angrier, like he can’t stand the thought if Obi-Wan pitying him. “I am not your failure, Obi-Wan” had so much impact. This is the kind of stuff I really wanted to see throughout the series.
Vader describes himself in the following way after being sealed in the suit in the Revenge Of The Sith novel: "And you rage and scream and reach through the Force to crush the shadow who has destroyed you, but you are so far less now than what you were, you are more than half machine, you are like a painter gone blind, a composer gone deaf, you can remember where the power was but the power you can touch is only a memory, and so with all your world-destroying fury it is only droids around you that implode, and equipment, and the table on which you were strapped shatters, and in the end, you cannot touch the shadow. In the end you don't even want to. In the end, you do not even want to. In the end, the shadow is all you have left. Because the shadow understands you, the shadow forgives you, the shadow gathers you unto itself-And within your furnace heart, you burn in your own flame.”
What I love about Anakin's "i am not your failure, Obi-Wan" is that he's essentially taking responsibility, and admitting how horrible of a person he's become. So absorbed into self pity, the only person that could ever get him to move forward from that point would be Luke.
@@199950mc I think you’re objectively right, I totally agree that Obi isn’t feeling pity towards Anakin - he’s feeling responsible for the downfall, feeling he could’ve prevented it, should’ve seen it coming, but most of all heartbreak because of the way things used to be vs the person/zombie before him now. I think it’s a reflection of Anakin/Vader that he chooses to see all of that as “pity”
Obi Wan's apology isn't just for Anakin's burning on Mustafar. It is for everything... The Jedi taking Anakin away from his mother, the Jedi manipulating and using Anakin, their failure to promote him to Master, their reluctance to help him in his fears regarding Padme's death, in his own inability to look after Anakin and guard him from the dark side. Such a powerful line.
He’s apologizing for even the result of it all. How anakin had to go through everything and do everything he did for the dark side just for him to find some sort of help for his doomed wife.
Don't hate me for this comment but Obi Wan should've clocked about Anakin and Padme while he still had the chance to intervene - he failed to sense something was up and mainly focused on his relationship with Palpatine during ROTS of who was the only one (ofcourse for all the wrong reasons) Anakin's sole confidant so ofcourse that's where his allegiance would end up. Obi Wan did fail Anakin for being short sighted, Qui Gon would've handled it early if it even became anything under his watch.
When I see Vader now, I only feel pity and sadness for him. The good person who was once Anakin spent his life being bound to others; first to Watto on Tatooine, then to the Jedi Order, then to the Emperor (who acted like his friend, but who was his worst enemy). He lost his mother and his wife to death. He lost his physical body to amputations, burns, and a metal torture suit. He never knew his kids. He became a tragic villain. He had the worst life one could possibly have. In the end, only his son's love truly freed him and allowed him to go back to the light.
@@abdulbah2176 As is every evil being. They could do the same about Palpatine, but as the Star Wars saga revolves around the Skywalkers, that probably won't happen. Palpatine is like the Joker: You can't really film an origin story about him without blurring the lines between mania and reality.
“I am not your failure, Obi-Wan. You didn’t kill Anakin Skywalker… I did” Such a good line. You have that bit hope of Anakin delivering the first line when his eyes are back to normal, but as soon as he says “I did” his eyes transition back to yellow as Vader
I had the feeling that for a bit, Anakin came back to life.. Like he didn't want Obi-Wan to have any guilt... Like: "i fucked up bro, don't worry about me, it's not your fault.. i'll be fine"
@@toavinariantsoarakotondrao4497 I felt that too. Vader absolved Obi-Wan of any guilt, while still maintaining that they are to be enemies. It’s a beautiful scene just like the drama of the saber duels in the original trilogy.
These lines are perfect for Episode 4, when Luke asked Obi Wan how did his father died...remember Obi Wan said about Vader "he betrayed and murdered your father". 👏
There are so many parallels in this scene that tie together so beautifully... - Obi-wan saying once more, that "he will do what he must". - Obi wan exposing half of Vader's face, just alike Ashoka did in Rebels, and in that moment they both saw Anakin. - The blue light on Anakin's face showing the good that is still in him, something that Padme, Obi-wan and Ashoka thought to be true. - Vader saying to Obi-wan, "then you will die" as he lights up his saber just like he told Ashoka. - Obi wan saying my friend is "truly dead" as luke said his father was "truly dead". - Obi wan calling Vader, "Darth". Which is huge as he accepts his brother is gone and when they next meet on the Death Star many years later he only refers to him as Darth. - Vader screaming Obi-wan like Maul did. Kenobi really has that effect on they sith he chops up. The cinematography, the voice transitions, the blue lighting on Anakin's face then red when Vader returns... This scene has genuinely added to the Skywalker story which is something that hasn't happened since Star Wars the Clone Wars. Incredible.
@@dadian803 Obi-Wan says that his friend is truly dead and 14+ years later on the forest moon of Endor, Luke Skywalker replies the same line to Darth Vader that his father is truly dead.
Man Darth Vader has to have one of the best story arcs out there like the character development is so good you can't help but feel bad for both obi wan and Anakin and what they have both lost and went through
It’s even more tragic because Vader is Anakin. He’s so broken and far gone down that he can’t turn back because nothing will change if he did. Obi telling him that “his friend is truly dead” hits home also because Luke says the same thing to him “My father is truly dead” to then be followed up with Vader saying it’s too late for him is just heartbreaking. I’ve believed Vader was him and now you can see it clearly. So much hatred towards himself for the things he’s done that he can’t see anything but destruction to find purpose. A truly masterful episode!

There was still conflict in him here. Luke was the catalyst anakin needed. He knew there was no coming back and nothing left. He even felt used and betrayed by palpatine... Anakin was never gone fully.
Also the reflection of the lights of their blades on Anakin when we was talking. The brief moment when he showed the slight empathy toward Obi-Wan the reflection was from the blue blade, but when the anger came back the reflection was red. Anakin wanted to kill Obi-Wan, but he had just enough sympathy for Obi-Wan to try and release him from his guilt for turning to the dark side.

I’m a precuels fan, these films are my introduction to this universe, and I admit, I don’t like the series but that line, after all these years, I need that.
Hayden’s smile when he says he killed Anakin Skywalker is honestly terrifying, and it’s just scary as hell to think that Vader is possibly smiling under the mask when he does horrendous acts.
I don’t think it necessarily means he smiles when doing those acts, just when he’s talking about Anakin/the Jedi because he hates them so much. Everything else is an outlier
Bruh I literally almost cried at this scene. Idk why. But Ewan acting in this scene just broke me. And hearing vader scream obi wan at the end. It was sounding like a broken man who was begging obi wan to please kill him and end his suffering or he’s gonna keep coming after him. Anakin wants out of that suffering. But obi wan can’t bring himself to kill him. And now vader hates him even more for letting him stay in that prison. I loved it. Hayden did a great job giving us the broken version of anakin. Which that was also I wanted to see on top of flash backs if you bringing hayden back. And Disney nailed that. This was the final straw where obi wan has finally gave up on anakin. That he is more machine now then man. Twisted and evil. And also cleaned up obi wan telling Luke that vader betrayed and murdered his father
Yeah because Ewan as Obi Wan in the prequels was always happy and uplifting who looked to the brightside. So hits harder to see him so sad over losing his friend
it made me tear up. it feels way more emotional than what happened at the end of their battle on mustafar. especially with obi wan apoligizing to anakin and leaving vader behind calling him darth. knowing what these two go through and what one of them has become puts alot of weight into this scene.
True. I found his following lines a bit less convincing though- too steadily delivered considering the emotional turmoil he’s going through. I would have loved for him to stutter or for his voice to break a bit
It's even deeper when you realize that it switches actors when it switches "personalities". When James Earl Jones talks it's Vader but when it Hayden it's Anakin.
0:20 the little tilt Obi Wan makes with his head shows literally his heart breaking, it's like he still loves him so much but knows he cannot help him anymore. It's an unconscious movement we use when we desperately want to be close to someone but we can't. This scene omg was so powerful, heartbreaking and also THE SCENE I was craving for all of this years ♥️😭
Hayden was incredible in this scene, You can feel the conflict, there is a bit of Anakin in there that is ashamed of what he has become. "Anakin's gone, I am what remains". There is also some of the blue light shining in signaling this but then after he says I am not your failure Vader takes over again and his voice and expression become darker as the red light covers his face. Absolutely perfect moment. They both nailed this scene people blasting this show are just idiots, it does have some issues but overall it's a fantastic story and this last episode was incredible.
Whats sad is all the star wars movies and shows have issues. The OG's had all kinds of silly moments that didn't really make sense. But that is what makes Star Wars. This series was 100% perfection in every way. All tied back together nicely and setup to leave room for more if needed.
Disney Star Wars has been a mixed bag for me. The new trilogy was atrocious, Mark Hamil knew that. The shows have been much better though, and Rogue One was also really good.
@@jacobfromallstate4963 While I respect the opinion I wouldn't personally say atrocious the biggest problem is they had no plan/roadmap but I still think they got certain things right like Kylo Ren's character and the films had their moments. Still overall the sequel trilogy was indeed disappointing and it had so much potential they just rushed them into production without properly laying the groundwork needed and planning where the story goes and how it's going to work in the overall scheme of the saga.
This scene made me cry. It also made my sci-fi dreams come true to see these two again on screen and getting a dialogue like this. The show may not be perfect.... but this scene was truly beautiful.
I think the show overall was really good. There were some silly moments like the gate he could have just walked past and hiding Leia under the coat, but overall it was a great ride. The kid did a good job embodying a little Leia, the early sprouts of the Rebel alliance were interesting and the stakes always felt high despite the fact we knew how it would end for the primary three characters. Reva is a good set piece both for how the darkside breeds arrogance and how quickly darkside acolytes would turn on and disown each other, Owen and Beru were very likable in the scenes they had and the set pieces were awesome
@@Britskee2003 I feel you Britney. I've been a fan of Star Wars since I was a kid and this was the fight/dialogue I've waited for my whole life. Truly something else!

@@Steve23415 same. Anakin already had this kind of smile back then... The only difference is that, back then, he was not so scarified you couldn't pierce through emotions. To me ? This was the very last bit of Anakin that was remaining... The same that shall reappear years later.
Without realising it, Vader gave Obi-Wan the closure that he needed. It's heartbreaking, but at least now Obi-Wan will be able to honor the memory of the friend he lost. I just hope that if there's a second season, they include flashbacks to the clone wars of happier times. I just can't get over this. Best fictional friendship/brotherhood/rivalry in history for me.
Yeah, he finally blamed himself above everything else for what happened, but still can’t let it all go and wants to destroy Obi Wan almost as if to finally bury anakin for good
I really want a second season, just one more mission of tattooine for Obi Wan would be great. Could also focus on him training with Qui Gon and giving us a deep look at that side of the force.
Well to be fair the L Vader took here is exactly the reason he became calm, and the absolute nightmare of destruction we all know and love. He realized that he was the problem, and instead of hating Obi Wan more than life itself he hates himself more than life itself.
Easily one of the greatest scenes in Star Wars history, Ewan Mcgregors acting was on point. The shifting of Anakins voice back to Vader’s was a brilliant divide!
I love how Anakins tragedy is one of the greatest fictionary examples of hitting rock bottom and not going back because he realized there’s no changing what he has done but in the end before he reaches the his end he is able to redeem himself even if it was only truly witnessed by his only son if this story was written thousand of years ago it would be seen as a biblical tale
People really did not give Hayden credit for how well he emotes with his facial expressions when the prequels first came out. His best moments were in Revenge of the Sith.
0:49 “I am not your failure, Obi-Wan.” For a second it sounded like Anakin broke through Vader to speak, telling Obi Wan that he didn’t fail him. but when Vader’s voice synthesizer and vocoder re-registered when he said Obi-wan’s name, I felt like Vader quickly took over and overwhelmed Anakin again.

“Obi-Wan once thought as you did” This scene gives more meaning to that line, in this series Kenobi refers to him as Anikan because he believes that he is still in there somewhere, in this scene he Vader tells him that Anikan is dead. Now Kenobi beleived that Anikan truly is too far gone and now knows he’s Vader which is why he then refers to him as Darth just like in A New Hope
I cried during this scene, Hayden and Ewan knocked it out of the park as they are not Vader and Kenobi but Master and Apprentice recollecting on how things used to be not to mention how Anakin's voice came and went during this conversation, just so well done. It was also eerie seeing him smile when he says he destroyed Anakin and Obi-Wan calling him Darth. Fantastic episode and I hope that we get a 2nd season.
This was a good series and I thoroughly enjoyed it but do we really need a 2nd season? Everything that could be told was told. The only thing I would've liked to see was an adaptation of the comic where Obi Wan fights Krrsantan otherwise, there isn't much else to tell.
It was heartbreaking when Obi Wan referred to him as his friend Anakin at the beginning of the conversation, but by the end of the conversation he said goodbye Darth. A very powerful moment indeed.
This will forever prove that it was not Hayden’s fault for how Anakin was portrayed during the prequels. He is fantastic. As well as Ewan. This is what I’ve needed since 2005.
I never got the hate, because if you see it closely, the Anakin character is just as "charismatic" as a teenager mass shooter. It is portrayed exactly as an Anakin should be, very insecure, codependent, but with too much power for his own good.
@@NathanLorenzana Except that's not at all what they were shooting for, that's why it gets the hate. It being retroactively fitting doesn't change the fact that they wrote Anakin thinking he would come off as genuinely cool and suave when they made his dialogue so ass. The hate is specifically because he comes off as a creepy teenage mass shooter when the writers meant for him to come off as a mix of James Bond and King Arthur.
The thing that sticks out to me in this scene is that Anakin is setting Obi-Wan free. Obi-Wan is a prisoner of his own guilt, and Anakin knows that. Saying Vader killed Anakin instead of Obi-Wan is Anakin's way of saying, "I forgive you."
And in a new hope Obi-Wan sets Vader free. in some way. He got his Win against Obi-Wan. He doesn't have to prove himself anymore. And his hatred for Obi-Wan doesn't matter anymore. He is now concentrated on his Son who Obi-Wan actually kind of brought to him as well. Ofc Luke eventually sets Anakin free, but Obi-Wan helped on the way to make it happen.
That look in anakins eyes when he says you didn't kill anakin Skywalker... I did. It was so creepy and twisted... it was like a dagger through Ben..... such a powerful scene. Debra Chow really nailed this along with Hayden who finally got to have his own take on the role as well
As I remember right Ewan was executive producer of that episode so I wouldn't give Chow too much credit - especially after the bullshit she created with that entire series.
Disney really nailed the relationship between vader and obiwan Anakin had nothing left, he lost his wife, (still thinks he lost his child) lost his mother, lost his master, lost his moral compass, there is nothing left, Vader is all that remains, and Vader will destroy every ghost of Anakins past to forever seal his fate. Obiwan, haunted by the ghost of his former friend and pupil, he feels such sorrow and remorse for what happened, and what he had done to Anakin and still, even after seeing that Anakin was no more, that there was nothing left in him but the desire for malice and destruction, he could not bear to kill him.
I love the distortion of Vader’s voice after his helmet broke. You can hear Vader’s iconic voice but also Anakin’s. The amount of feelings I felt watching this scene was extraordinary. God, I love this series.
Yup, been waiting for this scene for decades and I didn’t even know I needed it. Seeing what can happen to a person as gifted and compassionate as Anakin Skywalker when they allow themselves to be manipulated and turn to darkness is truly haunting. Now I will ALWAYS see Hayden’s face underneath the mask instead of anyone else - Hayden IS Darth Vader!
This seriously is one of the most touching and emotional moments in Star Wars period. I’ve rewatched this scene countless times and not once does it ever fail to have the same impact as the first time watching. Just the mix of Anakins voice with Vader’s is absolutely fenonminole
You can really hear and see how lost Anakin has become, when he says, “you didn’t kill Anakin Skywalker, I did” he says it with a smile. Not because he is proud of who he has become, but because he knows how much hearing that hurts Obi-Wan. He is delighted to see his former master in pain, because for Vader, pain is all there is. All he wants now is for Obi-Wan is to feel what he now feels all the time before cutting him down. To have his *revenge*
Yeah, but in trying to hurt obi-wan and prove that obi-wan has no hold over him he actually frees him from a lot of the pain and guilt that he has felt about what happened on mustafar and to anakin in general.
I do think he is proud - not of who he has become but that it were his decisions that made him that way. Despite that I agree it is probably also the delight about sowing conflict in his master. Darth Vader has had some great quips throughout his appearances, but they're not just color commentary, they're one of his weapons. He plants stories in his enemies minds: Stories of fear, stories of anger, stories of despair. 1) "I find your lack of faith disturbing": Fear. His force choke is a reminder that Admiral Motti should believe in Vaders ability and intention to destroy everybody who gets in his way. In other words: Motti can choose between faith and death. 2) "No - I am your father": Courage to tell the truth. This is something Palpatine has used on Anakin as well: The old trick of saying the enemy is afraid of the truth, so they bend it to their needs. We, the Sith, are powerful and courageous enough to face the truth. 3) "If you will not turn to the dark side, then perhaps she will": Despair. A narrative that pushes you to abandon convictions for a short-term victory - while making it seem as if you were actually still following your values, just in a broader sense: You love your sister, so when you slaughter your father in rage in order to save her, you're still a good guy! 4) "You didn't kill Anakin, I did." Despair: Obiwan is given the choice to either accept Vaders interpretation - but that would mean falsely refusing his own responsibility - or to take complete responsibility. After all, Vader talks about "killing Anakin", which of course is in itself factually wrong. But with his harsh wording it looks like either Obiwan was solely to blame or he had nothing to do with it: Only a Sith thinks in extremes. Of course there is the middle-ground of accepting partial responsibility, which is the path Obiwan apparently chose: If he had accepted that none of this was his fault, he probably could have killed Vader instead of turning his back and leaving.
They had some good moments. I think overall this series was entertaining. I'm interested in hearing what you don't enjoy? I found it entertaining and nice to link events. Maybe not groundbreaking but decent
@@Reliant1864 Yeah! This is gonna be long so I apologize in advance. Basically, my main complaints come from the poor choreography and questionable writing decisions for the show. The chases involving Leia were pretty bad - a little too cartoony. Unnecessary parkour during the rooftop chase, subpar writing in episode 4 (I definitely think that was the weakest link), especially how the guy went from not wanting to help and then immediately changing his mind. I wasn’t really onboard with Reva, but episode 5 helped me empathize with her character a bit more. She’s definitely not my favorite character, but I feel it was a little too far into the series to really form a connection to her. Between the really lighthearted scenes with Leia, and the polar opposite scenes with Vader rampaging and people getting cut in half, I really didn’t know who the primary audience was. I know every show has their moments where it’s got an overall dark tone with some light moments, but this seemed to be half and half which just made it awkward, in my opinion. Lastly, the sets felt fake for the most part (which they were). I can only think of 4 places that felt like they were in the location (Tatooine, the planet where they had their first duel, Nur, and the Coruscant scenes.) It felt like they did too much CGI for the Jabiim sequences. In short, I didn’t have a problem with the story in and of itself, it was the way they told it. I can't help but crying every time i watch this scene . Their sadness. His pain. His despersonalization. The forced acceptance obi wan has to do that anakin won't come back. The impotence, the feeling that he could have done something more to help him.
This is one of the few times in SW that anyone has ever apologized (at least, on this level). Mace Windu never apologized to Boba Fett. Anakin didn't apologize to Luke after he turned back to the light. So for Obi-Wan to tell Anakin "I'm sorry" is huge, not just for the series, but for the saga as a whole.
That’s why the prequel trilogy cements Luke Skywalker’s significance in the grand scheme of things. The fall of the Jedi, the rise of the Empire, and the war that came out of it was a result of - as Padme put it - “a failure to listen.” Everyone was so caught up in their ego that no one could admit fault or responsibility that conflict emerged as a result.
"You didn't kill Anakin Skywalker. I did." Having that cut show Anakin as Obi-Wan knew him. A brave, wonderful man who always put others above himself. Really puts it into perspective that he essentially created a split personality because he couldn't face his actions.
The way they use the light of the lightsabers here is absolutely masterful. The blue on Vaders face as he tells Obi-Wan that he wasn’t his failure to it turning red as he says he’s the one that killed Anakin Skywalker as his hatred rises back up within him. Absolute art
If you've ever known someone who has thrown their life away due to their destructive habits, this scene truly wrecks you. So sad to see somebody fall so far believing even still they're right and that they're lost. It makes his redemption through Luke that much more powerful. Such a tragic story.
Right at the first time he says “Anakin” after he cuts open his helmet, you can absolutely see the start of a smile towards the end of the shot. Watch his eyes! I feel like in seeing Anakin’s face, its a little reminder that this is indeed Anakin he is fighting. Almost as if there’s a glimmer of hope that his friend is still in there, but from that optimism comes Vader’s tragic comments that declare Anakin is gone, and not only was Anakin let down from outside himself (the council, the republic, Obi-wan) &c.) , but Vader destroyed him within himself. After this is when we see Ben’s heart truly break, and the division mentioned in A New Hope is made that “He betrayed and murdered your father.” This got me. Oh man.
The "betrayed" part I never truly got. But now seeing how truly Vader betrayed Anakin, is more in the sense that the promises of the dark side only brought him sorrow in the end. Betrayed finally hits home here, because then Vader comes and kills whatever could he left of Anakin. Brilliant really.
The best scene in Star Wars history. Can’t honestly think of any scene that made me this emotional. The acting, the evil, the emotional response from Obi-Wan. Unreal
Anakin had such a tragic life, it's sickening. He had a good heart and wanted the best for the people he cared about, but was mistreated all of his life. In the end, his strong attachement to other people became his undoing. That's also what makes him so relatable; he's human.
In Ep 4 recall when Ben said the line "Only the master of evil Darth". I like how that ties in here. He is no longer Anakin to Ben but now Darth Vader from this point forward. Always wondered how that would be handled. Love the show or hate it, it is paying liberties to the finer details.
It’s so funny I never wrapped my head around it until I recently rewatch ANH but you don’t realize Kenobi referencing Vader as Anakin bc this whole scene explains it all. “You can’t win Darth”. “If you strike me down Darth I shall become more powerful than u can imagine”
I do not know how a star wars "fan" could hate this show. It added so much to the characters/universe/originals and didn't break canon. Some people literally wake up foaming at the mouth over Disney.
"*Blue illumination* "I am not your failure....Obi-Wan" -- Anakin speaking and absolving Obi-Wan of guilt. "You.... did not kill.... Anakin Skywalker...." slowly shrinking back into the darkness, but Anakin was still there. "I did." -- 100% Darth Vader as it changed to red illumination. People can say what they want, but this waa fantastic. That whole scene and dialogue sequence was a masterpeice in attention to detail. You could even see how his facial expression softed right as he was going into "I am not your failure... Obi-Wan". Outstanding.
Both Ewan and Hayden fucking nailed this scene. I don't think I've ever felt such strong emotions between two fictional characters. The crack in his voice when he said "I'm sorry" just broke me
You can actually see the blue glow from obi-wan's lightsaber glowing on vader/anakin's face, which represents part of anakin is back, as he was sort of nicer telling kenobi he didn't kill anakin, but then the red glow comes back as vader takes over and says,"I did"
One of the best scenes in star wars history. Literal tears to my eyes. You have to understand anakin/vaders pain. All he wanted was to protect the one he loved most from dying. He grew up a slave alongside his mother who slaved for years to yet have anakin to watch her die. He never had a father, only a father figure witch happened to be the most evil man in the galaxy. The jedi did fail anakin, they didn’t put their faith in the prophecy, they put it in politics. Poor obi-wan had to watch all of this happen before his eyes, having to kill his best friend. And now seeing him suffer with so much rage and hate.
And this is exactly why I hate it when evil is explained. It ruins the effect. Darth Vader was this scary, dark, evil force, and you did not know why. He just was. You didn't know why he breathed like that. He just did, and the effect worked great. Now that it's explained, every time I watch Star Wars and I see Darth Vader, I know he is just the young kid with a breathing apparatus that didn't have a daddy. It completely ruins Darth Vader.
@@Michael-jw6et Except this isn't a horror film, nothing important is lost when you give a character a deeper backstory. Before his weird breathing was explained it just came off as "He makes scary noises just for the sake of being more intimidating, George Lucas obviously didn't think of a reason he just wanted a unique villain." We didn't need to see the fucker as a child but the fact that Vader wears that suit and sounds like he's wearing an iron lung because he was chopped up and thrown into some goddamn lava makes him a cooler character. "Evil" unexplained is just a bland villain. A fucking five year old can create a "bad guy" who breathes scary, wears all black, a helmet that looks like a skull, and chokes people with space magic, and your stance is "That's actually the best version of a villain, the five year old's best attempt one."
Honestly what shocked and scared me the most was when Vader said “you didn’t kill Anakin skywalker... I did”. And that freaking smile he did as if Vader took pride in killing Anakin. It also shows how Vader and Anakin are two completely different people. Also another part that got me was when Vader screamed for Obi wan. Like he wanted him to either finish him off or let Vader kill him. It’s almost a mirror to Obi wan leaving Anakin to burn on Mustafar.
Vader and Anakin are not two different people. Anakin thinks he's Vader, but knows he is not. It's a façade to help justify that he is a new person, and allow him to be a monster. He always has been Anakin, he just drives that part of his personality out with the rage and hate he has been left with.
@@Ragnell56 Memories and experiences are what defines an individual's identity, Vader suppresses the memories and experiences of Anakin Skywalker, thus becoming a new person altogether, as the title of Darth exists for the very purpose of cutting away one's former identity, fully embracing the dark side in it's entirety. People change throughout the years, the core remains the same, but new neurons constantly appear and change.
Arguably the deepest moment in entertainment in a long time. Being familiar with each character's history as well as that of their relationship - I truly felt that apology. Okay, I guess Obi wan is one of my favorite characters from now on.
When he screams for Obi-Wan, I feel like it's not just his hatred of Obi-Wan but it's like a cry for help, that he's become this cyborg that can barely live and function without the cybernetics and suit, he's constantly suffering not just because of Obi-Wan leaving him to burn because he lost everything he loved, all because of the Emperor's manipulations causing doubt to eat away at him until he turned to the dark side, believing it to be the only way to save what he loves
Vader telling Obi-Wan: "I'm not your failure" basically means: you did not fail me, it's not your fault. I brought all of this on myself. the death of my wife and children and the grave injuries I sustained. So Anakin, in a moment of light, tried comforting Obi-Wan because of his huge guilt over Anakin's fall.
@searoof When watching the OV then yes I would kinda agree. But in the german dub its clearly Anakin being a normal person for a few seconds and being empathetic with Obi-wan. The blue light on his face also symbolized the light side of the force which quickly fades after that one moment of clarity.
@searoof This scene is going to be debated for years because so much was left unsaid. My take on it is that it was Anakin in a brief moment of empathy/clarity/light saying "I am not your failure, Obi Wan," but then he snapped back to the dark for the rest of it.
I've rewatched this 5 times now. This exchange was better than I hoped. I gave up. This was PERFECT.. if only the rest of the show had been this good. This scene needed Hayden and Ewan on set together....thank you, both for coming back. We needed you
This scene was so epic. So many of the comments here have nailed it. Both actors absolutely got it right here. I hope we get some more Vader played by him in some of the upcoming series or something. Just too cool to not have more.
Obi-Wan says "then my friend is truly dead" thats related to what luke says later: "then my father is truly dead". I like how it makes this line more powerful so it could lead to Anakin's return.
The cinematography of this fight was so so bad. The 3d turning camera during the fight just sucks. Such a bad decision. In the prequels the fights were much better because they used a camera that only moved 2d.
What kills me, what truly breaks me with this scene. Isn't the words being sad, or the poetry in motion, not even the call backs to the original and prequel trilogy. What does me in is the tears that formed in Obi's eyes whilst looking at Vader. It was enough to send me into tears the whole rest of the night.
Even if people don't like the show, this scene is one of the most emotional scenes in all of star wars imo. Ewan Mcgregors acting and incorporating haydens voice in darth vader was perfect.
In fact, I don't like the show. But this is a very beautiful scene, I can't deny it.

Also, TCW and Rebels actually takes some stuff from legends and makes it canon like Darth Maul's return, Thrawn, and other things so I can at least thank them for that.
Don't think obi pitied him at all it was sorrow for him losing his brother and seeing what's become of him
What I love about Anakin's "i am not your failure, Obi-Wan" is that he's essentially taking responsibility, and admitting how horrible of a person he's become. So absorbed into self pity, the only person that could ever get him to move forward from that point would be Luke.
@@199950mc sure, that’s kinda the definition of what it means to pity someone. That’s why I really liked Hayden’s delivery of the line.
Seriously they really went “Fuck you got ours” and were surprised it went to shit
He’s apologizing for even the result of it all. How anakin had to go through everything and do everything he did for the dark side just for him to find some sort of help for his doomed wife.
The Jedi saved Anakin from slavery. The downfall was Qui Gon's untimely demise. In which he should have raised Anakin.
And for what Palpatine put him through.
😪
Vader at this point is just a pathetic being, powerful but yet broken in ways that would never be repaired
😭😭😭😭😭

@@abdulbah2176 As is every evil being. They could do the same about Palpatine, but as the Star Wars saga revolves around the Skywalkers, that probably won't happen. Palpatine is like the Joker: You can't really film an origin story about him without blurring the lines between mania and reality.
“I am not your failure, Obi-Wan. You didn’t kill Anakin Skywalker… I did”
Such a good line.
His eyes only look normal. Intentional by the director of course, but his eyes are always yellow this entire scene.
Just like in rebels when he talks to Ashoka 😭
Incredible.

Amazing how Hayden can show so much emotion with just his left eye and a few spoken lines. Love this scene so much..

“Obi-Wan once thought as you did”
This scene gives more meaning to that line, in this series Kenobi refers to him as Anikan because he believes that he is still in there somewhere, in this scene he Vader tells him that Anikan is dead.

@@lukeemson350 exactly
Of course there is the middle-ground of accepting partial responsibility, which is the path Obiwan apparently chose:
If he had accepted that none of this was his fault, he probably could have killed Vader instead of turning his back and leaving.
Haven’t been the biggest fan of this show but holy CRAP did this scene get me in the feels.

After seeing their budget, though, I can understand why (they had less than $100,000,000 to make it).

@Iván Queirolo There are answers to both plot holes. It's simply that Leia forgot Obi-Wan. And this take on it is absolutely superb. Bravo!
And Disney never apologized for their crap writing.
Yoda never apologized to Palpatine for an attempted coup.

Oh man.
Yes, was hoping they’d have a chat like this. When he apologized I lost it, perhaps I draw too many parallels to my own life.

Anakin had such a tragic life, it's sickening. He had a good heart and wanted the best for the people he cared about, but was mistreated all of his life. In the end, his strong attachement to other people became his undoing. That's also what makes him so relatable; he's human.

Both Ewan and Hayden fucking nailed this scene. I don't think I've ever felt such strong emotions between two fictional characters.
The crack in his voice when he said "I'm sorry" just broke me
This scene gave me the chills bro, it just truely shows how broken Anakin is, and how far he fell.
A fucking five year old can create a "bad guy" who breathes scary, wears all black, a helmet that looks like a skull, and chokes people with space magic, and your stance is "That's actually the best version of a villain, the five year old's best attempt one."
why was "im sorry, im sorry anakin, for all of it" something that i felt like ive been waiting to hear my whole life...
@@Ragnell56 they really are

When he screams for Obi-Wan, I feel like it's not just his hatred of Obi-Wan but it's like a cry for help, that he's become this cyborg that can barely live and function without the cybernetics and suit, he's constantly suffering not just because of Obi-Wan leaving him to burn because he lost everything he loved, all because of the Emperor's manipulations causing doubt to eat away at him until he turned to the dark side, believing it to be the only way to save what he loves
It’s so sad because his love and compassion is what drove annakin to the darkside but by succumbing to he lost it even for his best friend and mentor
My take on it is that it was Anakin in a brief moment of empathy/clarity/light saying "I am not your failure, Obi Wan," but then he snapped back to the dark for the rest of it.
such a powerful scene, this actually made me tear up this morning
1:05 I wish his voice here transitioned to vader's voice when he said "I did"
In Portuguese-Brazilian dub, there was a voice transition between Anakin and Vader in this part. Too bad it's not in the original one 😢
0:56, the "I did" gave me chills first time seeing it
this fight was so god damn good. Such a beautiful fight in a way
it was good it wasn’t that good calm down
@@GUY-on-Earth It was that good
@@GUY-on-Earth guess you're not a star wars fan at all
The cinematography of this fight was so so bad.
In the end obi didn't finish him, still was a jedi and showed compassion and accepted what he did.
