The saddest thing about Maul is that he doesn’t hate Obi-Wan. He just latches onto him thinking that he hates him because he knows that he will never be able to get revenge on the man he truly despises, Palpatine.

      @thegoodolddays9193 2 ปีที่แล้ว +648

I think this is what he really wanted to happen anyway. If he had won, he would be even more miserable than he was before.
Short of killing the one that actually wronged him, this was his perfect end. He had his final confrontation and he found peace. He was relieved of his hatred.

    • @skullcruncher76
      @skullcruncher76 ปีที่แล้ว +240

@@thegoodolddays9193, I'd go as far to say that in this end, though it was only for a moment, he found his salvation. He was dominated and learned what hatred was, he was indoctrinated to live an incredibly hateful life. He was bested in combat by Obi. Therefore probably respecting him as an opponent, thus why he won't kill him. He never truly hated Obi Wan. He found redemption in realizing this.
Redemption from the darkside. Like Obi Wan said, Maul was forced into this. Indoctrinated. Which is what makes his final end matter so much more. Instead of going to what the Jedi might call hell, or some sort of punishment in that kind of afterlife. Maul's soul may have been redeemed after finally letting go of his hatred. As Maul said. "He will avenge us".
Maul never wanted to kill Obi Wan. He just wanted a reason to hold onto his hatred. When Maul was defeated, Obi didn't actually land a killing blow. Or so it doesn't seem like it.
Instead, it just seems that Maul simply gave up his will to fight because in that moment he found respite and redemption in realizing that Obi Wan was protecting the chosen one. You can see it in his face and hear it in his voice.
The animators, directors and the one voice actor of Maul. They all did such an incredible job. Maul was the only Character of any show, movie, and anime I've ever seen with THIS much Character development. Unfortunately there will never be another Character in any media or maybe in any book that has such a deep level development.

      Savage>Maul. Allow me to explain:
Savage's death was the only time I cried during the Clone Wars. "Brother, I'm an unworthy apprentice. I'm not like you...I never was." People seem to forget that Savage wasn't naturally a Jedi-killing monster. Savage was a loyal zabrak and a friend before being stripped from his village and turned into a beast by the Nightsisters against his will. For three whole seasons, Savage was a pawn---pushed around and mistreated by his superiors (the Nightsisters, Dooku, etc.). Even Maul treated him like a subordinate more than a brother.
In conclusion, Savage's arc is tragic and underrated. This is why, personally, I think Savage Oppress is a better character than Maul.

Goes to show my favorite thing about Kenobi; Doesn't matter his age or rank, dude always learning and evolving. It's also one of the differences between them - They are both survivors, each one dealt damages to the other, and both lost everything - But Kenobi survived by acceptance and moving on, while Maul survived through his lust for revenge, what kept him perpetually chained in the past.

@@DesolatedChild018 Theres a whole dissection and discussion about this last duel. Firstly, historically its the most "accurate" representation of a duel the universe has ever depicted.
Historical duels between samurai, or really any fencing or bladefighting, really only lasts one exchange, maybe two or three blows max. Two samurai would circle one another, changing stances, looking for an opening, the perfect moment to strike. When the exchange came, there would only be one chance.
And in this duel, Everything leading up to that last fateful exchange was a mind battle, and Obi Wan won before the blow even fell, because he GOADED Darth Maul into doing what he did.
Notice how Obi Wan adopts his signature Soresu style stance.
Then to mock him Maul switches stances to the same one he used before he killed Qui-Gon.
To call his bluff and goad him in, he switches to Qui-Gons Ataru, taking the same stance Qui-Gon used before Maul killed him.
And Maul did not switch his stance, but you can see the realization in his eyes, and the anger, and he fell right into Obi Wans trap.
Besides the fact they are now in the open, which is where Ataru shines, Obi Wan learned from watching Maul kill his master, and spent a lot of time studying, not just that final fight, but Ataru in general. He tricked Maul into making the exact same move again, but instead of falling for the feint that killed Qui Gon, he cuts straight down the center, ending mauls life. Maul had just enough time to realize he wasn't just fighting "A rat in the desert". This is a Jedi "Master" One of the most accomplished and intelligent Jedi masters of the recent era. A Jedi master who survived Order 66. And a Jedi Master on guard duty, which means hes protecting someone extremely important. He totally underestimated and misjudged his opponent.

@@Cryogenius333 In general I've viewed that as Maul's biggest weakness. In every fight he loses he's underestimating someone or trying to look ahead to another fight and start preparing when he really needed to focus on the moment he was in. It's a nice contrast to the idea behind the Jedi as well, since they are supposed to live in the moment by contrast. You can even see when he starts beating these moments, against some of his fights with Obi-Wan when he first returns or against Ahsoka during rebels, where he's really intent on proving himself and showing he isn't as weak as many believe, he does incredibly well. Then he fights Kanan, or fights Ahsoka when he wanted to draw in Anakin and Obi-Wan, and he starts trying to accomplish other objectives because the fight is 'beneath him' and he gets punked by the enemy.

The Duality of Maul and Kenobi is honestly one of the best ones in all of media history.
Maul embodies the 'perfect' sith. He is fueled by anger, by rage, it's what drives him. His desire for revenge not only against Kenobi but also against Sidious towards the end of his life. He's not the perfect Sith, he's not all-powerful, but at his core, he represents the core Sith values perfectly and is probably my favorite example of a true Sith.
Kenobi on the other hand is the perfect Jedi. No quotes there. We all know why. Saw his master and lover die, saw his apprentice and best friend turn to the dark side, yet was never truly tempted. He remained a Jedi every step of the way. He harbors no hatred for Maul, and he showed understanding and compassion when he understood where Maul came from.
Also, something that I noticed watching this video, which I loved. Maul's Sith Eyes. A sith fully embarrassing the Dark Side has his pupils turn Yellow (unless you're Sidious and learned to not show them). Maul's are always bright golden in hatred. Except once: His death. I thought it would be a cool detail and then I noticed it, when he died in the hands of Kenobi, his eyes left that golden rage and had some green return to them. His death is the moment where he was finally at peace, and made peace with Kenobi. Fucking hell I love that character

This “He will avenge us” at the end hits so deep because he realizes that both, him and Obi-Wan, have lost everything because of Darth Vader and the Emperor. Both stories are similar in a certain way and at the end he realizes that they are allied, even tho they have one of the deepest and longest nemesis-relationships ever created. The only hope for both of them is Luke Skywalker.

I only just realized how strong Obi Wan is. He witnessed the death of his beloved master, by Maul. The death of his woman, by Maul. The death of his apprentice and brother, by the dark side. He had every reason to hate Maul, and no one would blame him. Yet he did not kill Maul out of any spite or rage, and he still gave Maul closure at his death. What other character showed that kind of strength?

“The Sith took everything from me, ripped me from my mother’s arms, murdered my brother, used me as a weapon and then cast me aside” wow that is probably the most accurate understanding of the sith and human toxicity as i have ever heard. Maul is a wonderful character because he has been broken so and through it all he has endured and survived. “I am the last survivor and i can thrive in the chaos that will come” he was truly a survivor till he met the one man whose conviction and will was stronger than his own, the same man who bested him so long ago.
What a character arc what a character study on hatred, loss, and revenge.

I love how Maul was built as a throwaway character, literally just a man who grunted, killed a jedi, used 2 sabers and promptly died. But they injected life into this character, so have him blossom form nothing to a bigger character than Grevious. But despite all that, they built his character on being a throwaway. He was rejected and cast aside but he just kept coming back, fueled only by his hatred, hence the name of this video. Truly an amazing character.

Neither wanted to kill the other: Maul only wanted to make Obi Wan suffer so he could understand the same pain and loneliness he felt. Obi Wan was constantly teaching Maul a lesson that the Dark Side was the only thing he could blame for his suffering. Maul and Ahsoka both, to me, showed what being betrayed by the light and dark side can do to one. Both showed the qualities not of an absolute, but of seeing it from both perspectives, just different ideals in how to achieve balance. With Maul being on the darker side of things, and Ahsoka being on the lighter side.
But no matter how saturated he was in the dark side, no matter if he believed in revenge. At the very end, he chose to believe in the prophecy of the chosen one, something you'd NEVER expect for a dark side character.

A movie or spin-off show of Maul's past would be better than the new Skywalker Trilogy. People that never seen the Clone Wars and Rebels wouldn't realise that Darth Maul was forced into the Dark Side would probably have a hard time watching his origin it be heartbreaking because in the end the character would be sympathetic and pitied for what happened to him.
Darth Maul is second to Vader of villainy.
Disney has a problem with there villains doing a 180 in their life. But not saying Vader isn't bad he redeemed himself to save his son that is why he is a good Character.
Maul never changed and that's why is a good character. In Maul's end he said "He will avenge US." Maul didn't do a 180 because Palpatine betrayed him, he was in his own way being a "hero" while being a villain, and that's also why he is a good character. In the end Maul was enlightened to know that both he and the Jedi would be avenged.

The only outside person I believe he truly hates is Obi-Wan who he believes betrayed him (which to be fair he did a bit). As an example: when in legends Darth Vader and Maul had a duel Maul asks "what could you possibly hate enough to defeat me?" And Vader replies "Myself" as he stabs himself through the gut into Maul who is standing behind him.
The fact that Vader's selfhate is virtually the only thing keeping him on the dark side is also the only reason why Luke was able to redeem him: by showing he can be forgiven.

It's hard for me to describe how tragic his fate is. This is such an emotional, such a deep part of a seemingly dark character who survived betrayal, his own death, the death of his brother. Incredibly strong character, with a broken fate. And his words... his last words... he will avenge us... these are not the words of a madman, but of a man who is glad to know that even after his death there will be someone who will settle the score with Palpatine.
To be honest, I burst into tears during this video and while writing this.

The fact that he said "he will avenge us" is a testament that maul never wanted to be a sith but when every emotion inside him fell short of his rage and hatred there was no other road for him to choose but in the end he still wanted to see the fall of Palpatine

In Maul's last moments, I think he was finally able to give up his hatred. His question of "Is he the chosen one?" is so telling in what he has finally come to realize. That Obi-Wan is the protector for this new chosen one. He dies believing that he and Obi-Wan will both finally be avenged for the betrayal they endured at the hands of Sidious. He almost has a sense of peace as he dies. A sense of closure. The purity of Obi-Wan's heart is also seen here. That even this being of darkness and hatred, he is able to connect with. Maul truly is one of the most tragic stories throughout the Star Wars universe. A very well made video.

A man who was taken from his family, trained to be a monster, was cast out for failure, had to claw and fight for survival, reunited with a man he considers his brother, reborn again, struck down by his former master and made to watch the death of said brother, confronted and lost to his nemesis again and again... finds himself dying next to the man he hated for so long. Someone once said Anakin/Vader is the most tragic character in Star Wars. I raise you Maul:
-Abducted as a child and trained to hate Jedi, with the purpose of destroying them
-Almost wins galaxy-defining duel, instead cut in half
-Spends a decade gone mad and living in a garbage dump
-Former master rejects him and kills his brother
-Wins the right to rule a people by their own laws, but is rejected
-Becomes a business owner. Something tragic happens to lose that and find himself stranded on a deserted planet.
-Decides to pass on his knowledge to an apprentice, but is abandoned
-Tracks down his old rival, but is killed by him

The voice acting of maul is just...
At the end of every sentence you can feel the friction as his words land, giving you an insight to the man's pure fury.
And sometimes you hear the pure despair of loneliness, his languish, his pain, his fear, his search for a purpouse that ultimately falls to revenge caused by a lack of other options.
His hatred for kenobi, his fear of sidious pain him so, yet he can not even afford to let go since it's his fuel to power.
After all, what is he going to do without power? How will he defend himself if sidious tracks him down?
A broken, hurt, fearful man who was taught wrong. Someone who could have become so much more, a man who only sought to live, for the sake of being alive rather than living.
Alas he defaulted into causing Kenobi suffering, without an end, he killed his brother, and that wasn't enough. He was flawed, he didn't see the injustice he caused, but rather the one's that were cast upon him.
Rather than trying to help himself recover, to make sure such a thing happens never again, he sought to make others feel what he felt.
I love how Maul doesn't even remember his name, symbolising how greater chunks of his life was taken away.
Truly, a great tribute for such a great character.
