Ive heard conflicting things. Many say lucas had the outlines of the full story before making the first movie in 1977. The lack of technology made it very difficult to create what he wanted so he had to start in the middke of the story, also he was only to make one movie at first by contract, so he had to scrap alot of it and try to make a movie that could stand on its own. But apperantly the arch of anakin falling and his children redeeming him was in the original script, not fully fleshed out. Idk what to believe lol
@@cognitivedisability9864 I thought it was pretty well known that Lucas didn't know that Vader was Luke's father until after the original was released? Or maybe he planned to tell the story of Darth Vader but not have him be Luke/Leia's dad?

Lucas had a rough lore written out, he probably gave alec a little background of what obi wans origin was. Still amazing acting for what little he had.
@@mulberry8882 I will concede Lucas had the Lore but Alec Guinness fixed a lot of things. Supposedly the script was a lot more awkward and chunky before. If you want to know the difference watch the painful dialogue in the prequel trilogy vs the original trilogy.
I love how when Obi-Wan says “Don’t seem to remember ever owning a droid”, he’s talking to R2, or it looks that way. It looks as though there’s that sarcastic subtext of, “You and I both know I didn’t own you, we both know who did”
Passage of ownership is a little weird. R2 was a royal Naboo droid, but it's never explained how Anakin and Obi-Wan got ownership of him. I suspect Padme gave R2 to Anakin, but Obi-Wan likely became a co-owner given Anakin's age. With Anakin assumed dead on Mustafar and his wife dying in childbirth, either Obi-Wan and/or Leia would end up as R2. It all depends on laws and how droids are registered to their owner. It seems like merely possessing a droid doesn't automatically grant mastership similar to how the title to a car works. Regardless of the case, it's understandable to see how Obi-Wan might have been registered as R2's owner without knowing it. Or we might be looking into this too closely and that R2 is just lying, which possible given that R2 lied to Luke and C3P0 to trick Luke into removing the restraining bolt.
Luke : woops, my toast fell on the floor... :-( Obi-Wan : Darth Vador used to throw everyone's toast on the floor... the dark side once pushed him to kill your father's toast...

Nah, we just accepted the term; we had heard of clones, knew what the word means. Also, even in 1977, it said, "Star Wars Episode 4" at the start of the scroll; I wanted to know where the first 3 episodes were. I learned in the book, "The Making of The Empire Strikes Back," that George Lucas had nine chapters in mind for the story.
It's crazy. When Luke says the name Obi-wan Kenobi, you can see the stress, emotional trauma, the PTSD of Kenobi in Sir Alec Guiness's face and eyes. And this was around 30 years before the prequels. Insane.
"He was the best star pilot in the galaxy and a cunning warrior... And he was a good friend." These lines never hit me harder than with those flashbacks 😢
Lucas probably thought it was just a neat throwaway line. "What kind of war did his dad fight in? A Clone War? That sounds cool. Oh! The Clone WARS! That sounds even cooler." Dude probably didn't expect to spawn a whole damn 7 season cartoon.
Out of all the "before the dark times" video edits, this is STILL by far the BEST. Although some other versions are longer, with the flashbacks following a more linear recollection of events chronologically, that's not how memory works. Instead, our memories are episodic, segmented, and all appear out of order. This edit displays this fact perfectly. We remember things not in the way they have happened, but in how they made us feel. Words that trigger certain emotions, both of which you haven't heard nor experienced in years cause the most vivid yet random flashbulb images that penetrate the mind without any control of what you see or feel. Great video! Praise to Alec Guinness for the top tier performance. Man is suffering PTSD from movies that had yet to be released in 30 years.
Even though he was not fond of Star Wars...he really committed to giving it his best. That’s a good actor, almost like Mark Hamill learned from him. Even though he doesn’t like the new Disney films, he is giving his best.
I think what Mark Hamill thinks about the new Star Wars movies depends on which click-bait you are reading at that moment. Some articles use quotes taken completely out of context, and I don't believe he has ever said he didn't like the Last Jedi, just that initially he had some doubts *at scripting phase*! He later came out to say he considers TLJ a great movie. The context matters. If he really hated the movie it would have been extremely unprofessional of him to ciritize it during its marketing, no matter who you are.
One of the great things about the original Star Wars movies is their ability to make a simple conversation or even a single line hint at the fact there’s much more to this universe.
I Never really appreciated Alec Guiness' subtle acting until now. The way he pauses and thinks, the sadness in his eyes as if he actually lived through all this. Genius.

I'd argue Obi-Wan was one of the greatest Jedi to ever live, he had so many sad and horrible things happen to him in his life and he still remained a strong and capable master. Not once did he ever even show a chance of turning to the Dark Side. He had so many chances but never took the easy way out
Obi wan is the greatest jedi to have ever lived, and thats because anakin and quigon pushed him to be more than just a jedi. We’re shown early on from phantom that the order was flawed and unwilling to adapt/change.
The Story of Obi-wan is truly a... tragedy. He lost everyone that he loved and people who were around him. They keep haunting his dreams, yet he doesn’t succumb to the darkness of those. He used his own flaws to overcome the darkness.
The fact that he says Darth Vader killed Anakin, and not that Anakin is Darth Vader really says a lot more than just him covering up that he's Luke's father. That in his eyes, that really is the case. How poetic.
@Eredin Glas in return of the Jedi obi-wan as a ghost says to Luke that what he said about Vader killing his father was true from a certain point of view

You realize that Palpatine entered the picture taking the place of a father like figure for him right?
One of the all time greats of acting. The pain and sorrow he captured as an old Ben Kenobi considering the clone wars wasn't even really thought of yet, was incredible. Such phenomenal unmatched talent.
Actors usually are just given notes about their characters, sometimes even great actors take that info and morph it into something of their own. George probably just told Alec Obi-wan was a jedi knight, who has seen war and the atrocities that come with it, he also saw the rise of The Empire and nearly avoided the extinction of the Jedi. His good friend, who was Darth Vader, betrayed him. So Alec being a genius actor understood what someone would feel going through all that and it showed in his performance still many years later.
Guinness was an amazing actor. Probably part of the reason he didn't like Star Wars as he seemed to think that playing a space wizard in a kids movie somehow tarnished his reputation.
Lucas said Guinness wanted to be in Star Wars because it was a fight of Good vs. Evil even when others told him to stay away from it. Never heard of Guinness saying he didn't like the movie and his role in it.
Well, yeah. According to the screenplay writer and choreographer of ROTS, Obi-Wan was an 8/10 in terms of power, while Yoda, Anakin and Sidious were alone in being a 9/10. That basically makes Obi-Wan one of the greatest Jedi of all time in terms of combat prowess alone, and that wasn't even his greatest virtue. The quote applies to him for sure.
As far as I know, Obi-Wan is the best at one of the lightsaber techniques and if I'm not lying to myself, that's the defensive one. He might have not been as force-sensitive as Anakin, but re-watch their battle and notice how Obi-Wan did not get hit once.
@@alonnie1919 Soresu, and he was not just 'a' master at it, but according to Master Windu, yes the guy who kicked Sidious' ass (confirmed by Lucas not to have been a ploy), Obi-Wan is 'THE' mater of Soresu. If anyone wanted to hit Kenobi in battle they'd have to have either flawless Makashi, which is the fencing style and Dooku's style, or even more perfect Ataru, which is the acrobatic style and Yoda's style.
Man... the dialogue of the first movie was so good. I watched this edit 8 years ago when it first came out and it still holds up. Its amazing the story that Lucas was able to tell when you see it this way.

There is something about the english accent that allows them to say "Tell me, young Luke..." without sounding awkward ... older english actors are perfect for jedi master roles ...
But it'd have a lot less weight without Lucas's great prequel trilogy. Imagine making such a thing and having people dislike it for years and years. Very sad.
Alec Guinness is still one of my favourite parts of the original movie to this day. The original Star Wars is the best IMO and although I love ESB, I more often go back to the original.
Let's not kid ourselves, there's still plenty of objective reason to dislike the Prequels for. They were heavily flawed films. But what they had over the Sequels is heart, and love for the story universe it waa set in. Even though I don't much care for the Prequels, and never had, I can still enjoy watching them with my nephews. The Sequels, however, were equal parts malicious, dismissive, and incompetence. @@beenjammin2118 I like to believe if it wasn't for the Clone Wars TV Show, Star Wars wouldn't have been strong as it is now. Clone Wars brought so much more life into the Star Wars Universe. @mike bond then we won't have great characters like jango ,dooku ,yoda and obi wan ,sure it had flaws but its still a story that explains what happened
This is the best explanation I've ever seen of why Obi Wan told a "white lie" to Luke. Obi Wan simply didn't have the heart to tell young Luke the truth.
Technically it wasn't a lie, since it's now canon that Anakin and Vader are two different personalities. When Yoda said Anakin had been consumed by Darth Vader, he was telling the truth. Once he betrayed Mace, Vader became the dominant persona and Anakin was no longer in control of his actions.
Its the pauses that the creator added to this conversation with luke that made it that much more powerful. I'm a huge fan of story telling through flashbacks and this one is wonderful
What's really great is how Alec Guiness is telling Luke the story as if he knew that the Prequels would come some day and all of that would happen. There is some great "backwards-foreshadowing", if you wanna call it like that. Say what you want about the Prequels, but Lucas did some good planning.
Alec Guiness was a renowned actor at the time of IV and was the only name known by Hollywood. Lucas actually couldn’t afford him but Guiness agreed to tone movie in exchange for a cut of the profits because he read the script and knew it would be a hit

@@tonywoods1226 Yeah, but...Anakin didn't die, so Obi-Wan couldn't have possibly killed him. He might've wanted to kill him, or let him die, but he was unsuccessful. So, I can't say any killing happened.
@@tonywoods1226 Let me just elaborate. What really happened is Anakin killed himself, when he decided to become Darth Vader. You might not agree with that statement, but I'm pretty sure that's what the movie was trying to show you.
@Drew B Obi-Wan Kenobi left him there to die. He thought Anakin had, until he felt his presence.
I have no idea how Alec had the foresight to glare at R2 the way he initially does. Neither he nor Lucas knew at that point that Obi-wan and R2 had ever met, yet he still glares at R2 in annoyance for bringing the war to Luke and blowing years of covert existence.
Idk what to believe lol

actually R2 doesn't remember Anakin because they deleted R2's memory
@@iikills6927 R2's memory wasn't wiped -- only C3PO's.

@@jimmiekarlsson4458 he made most of those problems himself
@@jimmiekarlsson4458 which is why Vader was such a terrifying Sith Lord. In one comic he fights against a resurrected Darth Maul, and just as maul is about to win Vader ignites his own saber through his own chest to kill maul from behind him. Maul asked him “what could you hate enough to destroy me?” To which Vader responded “Myself”. Vader always refused to die, because deep down he felt he deserved to be punished to experience all this pain for what he had done. But the more anger and hate the more powerful in the dark side you become. The whole thing is such a Shakespearean tragedy.
@@ollie4425 It was actually heavily due to Kenobi's lack of attention to Anakin and his nightmares about Padme dying and him averting his attention from their relationship in the first place. But even beyond that Anakin needed Qui gon jinn to not die and remain his father figure, Kenobi couldn't do that he said it himself when he defeated Anakin "you were my brother Anakin". You realize that Palpatine entered the picture taking the place of a father like figure for him right?
Mostly for Obi Wan
Obi wan is a freakin legend. He's basically a war veteran. The fact he lived for that long is incredible.
My condolences to Alec Guinness.
It's crazy to think of how good Alec Guinness' performance was in this scene when nobody truly knew his full back story
All that story was build after his performance, so it is not so hard to adopt it.
“Beware of an old man in a profession where men die young”
Damn.
Only Master Yoda could hit him in combat, and he still struggled with it.
If anyone wanted to hit Kenobi in battle they'd have to have either flawless Makashi, which is the fencing style and Dooku's style, or even more perfect Ataru, which is the acrobatic style and Yoda's style.
Straight White Male
What if I just hit o I wan lightsaber really hard.
"Do you know who dismembered my father?"
"Well ofcourse I know him, he's me."
Darth Occlus I think Obi wan killed uncle Owen some reason he likes burning people related to Luke
Man... the dialogue of the first movie was so good. I watched this edit 8 years ago when it first came out and it still holds up. Its amazing the story that Lucas was able to tell when you see it this way.
"He was the best Starfighter in the Galaxy, and a Cunning warrior and he was a good friend." Always gets me, hits even harder after watching Clone Wars.
Almost teared up when he said “and he was a good friend” and then they showed the flashes 🥲😭😭😭
no printer
Im man enough to admit that made me cry a bit.
@@Eliace590 Sosa showed the PTSD side very well a perfect edit
I've come back to this video what, nearly 5 years? No regrets.
Lucas Film mentioning the Clone Wars, Anakin being a great Pilot, etc: “You’re not yet ready this, but your kids are going to love it!”
Holy shit back to the future

@@GoldenTekYT Now this is Podracing!
On a budget!
Actually if you look closely into obiwan's eyes, right after he said "and he was a good friend" it looked like he was ready to cry.
You can see why too. They were brothers and Anakin looked up to Obi-Wan like the father he never had.
Webshooters1 yeah
Alex Guinness was such an amazing actor for his time...
Shadrak94 Yeah that's what I heard.
He didn't really hate _Star Wars_; he just wanted to be remembered for his other roles, not just Obi-Wan.
It's in those pauses that soldiers take when telling a story that speaks to the pain.
His acting before the previous movies were even released is insane.
There is something about the english accent that allows them to say "Tell me, young Luke..." without sounding awkward ... older english actors are perfect for jedi master roles ...
He felt a disturbance in the force
Ikr
@macks it's still gr8 by itself
Thats Sir Alec Guiness for you
This really emphasizes Alec Guinness' acting... As a kid I never realized how heavy the pauses were, I just thought he was a slow old man. Just wow
They are terrible films.
@@beenjammin2118 I like to believe if it wasn't for the Clone Wars TV Show, Star Wars wouldn't have been strong as it is now. Clone Wars brought so much more life into the Star Wars Universe. If it weren't for Clone Wars, then Star Wars would be nothing but something that started as one of the best films from the sci-fi genre to another franchise that fell from grace.
@@beenjammin2118 they were nonsensical, all flash no substance, stupid cash grabs. Not rogue one tho
Luke: “how did my father die?”
Obi wan: “Define what you mean by ‘die’.“
"He died at the hands of then Senator and now Archchancellor Adam Sutler... Wait... Wrong villain. Then Senator and now Emperor, Palpatine, in a joint effort with sand people. And, in a way, an innocent girl called Padme. Remove any of the three influences from his life and who knows what he could have become. They are all equally to blame for his downfall."
"Padme? Wait... My mother? How did she cause his death? They loved each other."
"And without that distraction, without her always on his mind, he would have stayed on the straight and narrow road to becoming one of the great Jedi Masters of our time. And she would have been at the senate to cast her vote instead of leaving that brainless creature to destroy the Republic and cause the horror that is the Empire. Had it not been for their love, things would have been entirely different. We, Jedi Knights, remain celibate for a reason, Luke. We don't let emotions influence our actions. Try to remember that in the future, if you, when you hit around my age, were to meet a silly girl who wants you to teach her."
A man dies a thousand times before his death
Didn't Padme help to overthrow Chancellor Sutler 😂
Yup. Together with Red Skull Elrond trying to be Anonymous.
From a certain point of view
god, imagine what an amazing actor you’d have to be to look like you’re remember things that haven’t even been thought of yet
"You fought in the clone wars?"
"Fought in it? I kinda started it by finding that stupid army."
Palpatine, Dooku and Jango started it by having him cloned times 1000
@mike bond then we won't have great characters like jango ,dooku ,yoda and obi wan ,sure it had flaws but its still a story that explains what happened
@mike bond ok shut up their's peoples in this world who like the prequel like me. We didn't want your point of view so just shut the hell up
@mike bond and if you didn't like it why would you even watch this video you stupid idiot
@Vox3l-Gl1tch sorry 😔
This makes me realize how on point obiwan’s acting was.
Alec Guinness is one of the greatest actors of all time
Tbh this was before The other episodes came so its quite impressive that he could imagine exactly how his character should react
he was so good at acting he could act like he had ptsd of a movie that came out like 20 years later

He literally lied to him so he could use him to kill his dad.
@@Dognuhtz theres no way he would tell the truth, he wanted luke to think his father was always good and wasnt the monster he had became
Alec guiness paints the agony of wrestling with the question so well.
@@thewarner2139 so he had a multiple personality mental disorder, interesting
It seriously sounds like alec guiness is holding back tears when he says "before the empire"
Isaac Benzing except the Empire was good
Its the pauses that the creator added to this conversation with luke that made it that much more powerful.
@@BenniRoR It's interesting you say that because I've always viewed this scene as one that kind of makes it seem like he really didn't have it all planned out from the beginning. I honestly think he changed the direction he wanted to go with these movies after A New Hope. I don't think Vader was originally supposed to be Luke's father and Luke and Leia definitely were not originally intended to be brother and sister. if you listen to some of the stuff he says about the clone wars it makes it seem like Anakin decided to fight and become a jedi much later in adulthood and that he knew Luke's uncle Owen way before that, but according to the prequels they really didn't have much interaction.
