The OGL Fight has Only Just Begun.

  • Back in the early days of the Mongol Empire Ghengis Khan mastered the art of the false retreat. He would harass an enemy city with an obviously inferior force of light cavalry, and when the defenders sent their army to stop them the horsemen would briefly engage a flank to minimize casualties. When the enemy wheeled to confront them the Khan's light cavalry would flee. Flushed with a false sense of victory the defenders would dispatch troops to follow, where they would be ambushed by the Mongols' main forces. The forces thus split, the Mongol cavalry would make short work of the pursuers, then swarm the remaining forces before they could reach the city. They would slaughter the remaining defenders before they could reach the safety of the city walls.
The Great Khan showed no mercy, in the beginning. It took his advisors some time to persuade him that a captured city could be taxed, and that this would be more profitable than simply looting and destroying it. As a result, this defeat was often followed by a genocidal massacre of every man, woman, and child in the defeated city.
This is what Wizards is trying to do. They are trying to lull us into a false sense of victory.
Don't believe it. This fight isn't over. It's only just beginning.
No free download, this time. This kind of commentary isn't why I started this channel. Next Vid will, hopefully, be less serious and include some free maps I made for my groups current Traveller campaign, but for now... Just stay in formation.

And here I thought I knew all the crabby old, old schoolers here on YT like myself. I, myself, strarted with a Holmes box from a Kmart in 78'. Would say sadly it took this situation to find the channel, but instead I'm thrilled. Thrilled to be part of a fandom backlash approaching the levels of ScAmazon's ROP debacle. Working through your back catalog at present. Keep on keeping on brother!🥃🤘🏼

Don't even get me started on RoP. I paused it halfway through episode 3 to get a stiff drink and didn't go back until I was down with COVID and hate-watched it.

Well said Sir. It's about greed. Simply put and Greed with Evolution. The evolution that Hasbro/WOTC want us to go through for the hobby. Which benefits only the Corporation not the community.

I never really got into 5th, because I remember when they tried exactly this with fourth; they wanted to cancel the OGL back then. It was just that people memory of the promise was fresh then, and so they didn't think they could directly do it.
For that reason, I never really looked at fourth. And for years I didn't look at 5e. It had left such a bad taste in my mouth.
But people kept saying good things about it, so I started getting interested in it, when this happened. So yeah; Hasbro reverting to form here.

I never gave 3E any table time because I was happy playing my 1E/2E homebrew, and I didn't see any point in changing. I did buy the rules and read them. It was a good game, but it wasn't "better", and I prefer the rules-light character development of 1E so I saw no reason to adopt it. I did fall in love with Neverwinter Nights, though, so I used the 3.0/3.5 rules. It was a good rule set for a D&D style computer game.
I wanted to love 5th edition. My friends bought me the starter set and we gave Lost Mines a play through. It was... Meh. At low levels the system works fine, but the PC's are overpowered, and they become more overpowered each level.
The module is good, though, and I have never been a fan of the Forgotten Realms.
I won't be trying 6E. I'm done with Hasbro, too. I am sticking with Castles & Crusades. It's just a superior system to D&D, now.

"When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time." (Maya Angelou). WoTC-Hasbro tipped their whole hand early, don't fall of the bluff and sweetened pot now. Continue to move beyond without them. Us old farts have seen it before. Another quote appropriate for this situation? How about "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" (George Santayana). It will all come around again, just sneakier this time. Thanks Grog.

You are absolutely right. They didn't roll a 1. They said they wanted to do something, the community (DM) asked "Are you sure you want to do that?" and they said "Yes". That's how your character (company) dies.

The latest developments are even slimier. At least the heavy handed tyranny of 1.1 was honest. This new 1.2 strategy of trying to fuck us over with a benevolent smile on their face is just sickening.

Yes they released a OGL 1.2 draft, that is legit the same thing as 1.1 but uses legal loop-holes to achieve the same results. Not to mention they can replace it at any time.

I don’t play very often, but I’m much more interested in non-D&D systems because of all this. I’m even rebuilding my collection of Palladium Rifts books and getting serious nostalgia vibes from it.
Regardless, it’s fun to watch. Keep it up Grumpy!

I'm not familiar with Rifts. I never really plugged into the post-apocalyptic genre. But I did play the Palladium Fantasy RPG a few times and thought it was an excellent system.

@@grumpyoldgrognard9561 it’s definitely a product of it’s time, but the world building is amazing. Going back and reading it again has been a treat.
As for the rules, it’s the same basic deal across all the palladium games. Each one has some quirks to it, and Rifts tossed it all in a blender and hit frappé.
I’ll probably pick up Palladium Fantasy one day, but for now I’m content.

The OGL battle does not affect me since I don't write and/or publish, but I've been following this very closely out of personal interest. I find it very sad to see what Wizards have done to the game and anybody that just wants to make it as enjoyable as it could be. They are in a position to make D&D bigger than anyone's imagination could allow, but instead they allow greed and shortsightedness rule the day. It''s a very far cry from the spirit of the hobby that was so prevalent in the late 70's & early 80's. I know that TSR had it's internal problems, but man, they really knew how to get AD&D and D&D out there. I'm glad that I was born at a time that allowed me to involved in the "Golden Age" of the RPG hobby. What's going on now just doesn't cut it for me.

    • @grumpyoldgrognard9561
      @grumpyoldgrognard9561  ปีที่แล้ว +1

This might affect you as a player more than you think. Unless you play nothing but vanilla D&D it's very likely that content you use in your games is at risk.

I’m mostly just sad that people seem to have no imagination anymore. Maybe I am seeing it wrong. I had almost no modules ever. Graph/hex paper and a couple sourcebooks plus asinine idea = fun. And don’t get me started on the ridiculous Mary Sue/Marty Stu state of 5e. I have no real point. Thanks!

It's so sad watching DnD Beyond deny the whole "AI DM" thing. I mean... I know it's the truth as far as they know, but they don't know what WotC is really doing. Hell... DnD Beyond is nothing in WotC/Hasbro grand plan. They're a bunch of nobodies, completely outside the loop. In six months to a year, they might all very well be unemployed.

I am commited to not bother with D&D6E at all, no matter how entising they may make seem to make it; However, I doubt they can even make it entising in the first place.
    ...
I may not even return to D&D5E, becase I found other systems I like better.
