Gary Gygax Was... Woke?

  • The people who claim OSR D&D lacked "diversity and inclusion" are just telling on themselves. They never actually played it. Allow me to use the first campaign setting ever published, the World of Greyhawk, written by Gary Gygax himself, to demonstrate.
The map image of Darlene's Greyhawk, with all the kingdoms' coats of arms, is an extra-large poster framed in the hallway up to my office. If you'd like a copy you can download it here.

In all fairness, pretty much every word in politics means different things to different people. Liberal. Conservative. Choice. Democracy. Fascism. Woman.
      Is.
But I think it's fair and reasonable to assume that most people watching this video will be smart enough to understand what I'm talking about. And if one or two people don't? Then they are either being willfully ignorant or they are very, very stupid. Either way, I don't value their opinions.

That was always so painful to me, to think dwarves intrinsically hated elves or whatever it was, and in retrospect a good thing. Fiction is supposed to point out our follies. I often think back to the idea of a lawful evil society, which I thought was just too absurd, a society with laws to favor the strong abusing the weak - Oh boy did I have a rude awakening coming.

In the 1980s my gaming table was a veritable rainbow of diversity. Any given weekend, we had guys, girls, at least three gay or trans people, native, white, Hispanic, Asian, and black people. No one ever mentioned racism or real world politics. We all wanted to put that aside and come together to kill imaginary dragons. We never needed a label and we just wanted to have fun. Gaming in the 1980s MADE me more diverse, accepting, and understanding of other people and who they were.

When I started playing in '78, the D&D community was a damn sausage party. It's not that we didn't WANT girls in the group, but back in 1978, playing D&D just wasn't something high school girls did.
But my table was still pretty diverse considering the setting. I went to a fancy pants parochoal private school that was like 90% WASP, but my regular 6 players included a black kid, an Iranian, and two Jews.
No girls, though. Damn I wish we had more than a tiny handful of girls playing D&D back then.

@@grumpyoldgrognard9561 I will admit, all girls in the group started as girlfriends of some of the guys who were already playing. It wasn't until the late 80s we got some girls in the group.

I'm suspicious that the motive is clearing away old editions to sell new editions. By turning youngsters on the old players who hang onto the old editions and have established seats as GMs. That would be severe ageism, and they'd be using young folk as their pressure group and unwitting participants in clearing away the old folk. I definitely have been age canceled and the truth is, I don't want to host hostile guests who keep disrupting play either.

    • @grumpyoldgrognard9561

I'm pretty sure of it. It's a marketing strategy. By villainizing older players as bigots they can keep the player base divided. OSR gamers are already a lost cause, as far as Wizards is concerned. If the players of various editions started mingling the young folks might realize what they've been missing out on!!!

Imo Greyhawk is baked into DnD.. especially ADnD but also all editions. Most other settings are just slight modifications to Greyhawk (usually not for the better). If you play in a setting with dwarves, elves, halflings that cast any spells in a "vancian" created by Bigby, Mordenkainen, Melf etc you are playing a homebrew of Greyhawk already.
Greyhawk and the DnD rules are married together in a way that really makes it sing in way other settings don't capture. Just my opinion.

Great video. If you want to make broad statements that mean nothing and get people upset it's important to use a label like 'woke' that has no real meaning. This is the dictionary definition of woke.
'aware of and actively attentive to important societal facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice)'
It is a label that is just pure nonsense.
There are people who say things that are outright offensive and disrespectful and when someone calls them out for it they label the person pointing out that they're acting in an obnoxious way as 'woke'. It's just an excuse for being obnoxious.
On the other side labeling people as nazis or fascists doesn't help either.

In the 1990s MTG released its first and only African themed set, Visions and Mirage, yet Richard Garfield still gets no credit for being a trailblazer. People don't realize that prior to 2000s writers had way more interest in non-western settings and were really branching out. There were attempts to include more African and Polynesian mythology and fantasy rpgs and card games. An awesome thing about the era is that you could learn a lot about mythology, cultures, and history just by playing fantasy games.
The narrative that fantasy and gaming media was racist back then is a fabrication of the corporate media who are looking for a reason to dismiss older materials. It's a way to kick out the gaming old guard who always had a fascination with history and mythology, and pretend like they're innovating on treaded ground; while it was actually corporate media that lacked diversity and sensitivity. Corporations like this form of virtue signaling because ethno-nationalism is cheap and divides the working class... oddly themes about _labor_ _struggle_ don't get nearly as much mileage.
I used to be heavily involved in left-wing organizing. The wokescolds were the bane of my life. They remind me of rabid right-wingers, as tribalistic identity politics defines both groups. Your assessment of them is spot-on, their outrage is just a vehicle for their own self-promotion, they distract from issues and policies that would benefit the working class broadly and steer them to their own bizarro ethno-nationalism. Some people say "do X because God said so", but what they really mean is "do X because _I_ said so", and this is the left-wing version of that. "Do X because POCs said so"; someone needs to have the moral courage to call them out on what they're _really_ saying.

It's not just production values. There's a pretty well-established process for converting an IP over to mainstream audiences. It doesn't really matter what the medium is... Video games, movies, ttrpgs... The process is the same. Dumb it down. Glitz it up. Orient it towards casual users. Place the product in other popular media. Big Bang Theory. Stranger Things.
Of course, this usually means leaving the IPs smaller, existing niche audience behind, but they don't care. This might impact the long-term longevity of the IP, but they don't care about that either. Corporations don't concern themselves with long-term strategies. They only care about short term growth. Next quarter's profits will likely be someone else's problem.

Don't let facts get in the way of a good lie.
To tell the truth, Wizards of the Woke is not pushing Dungeons and Dragons anymore. Their game has so many changes to the technical aspect of "Dungeons and Dragons" that is is effectively not even the same product. When they decided to merge Paizo, and TSR, they changed the product. It is no longer Dungeons and Dragons. That to me is why our old school TSR will stay on top. Our games were always diverse. Our games were always inclusive. We were the ones that brought in the kids that didn't have a clique, or didn't have friends. We were the ones who would try a character, just for the hell of it to say we tried it.
So when the next time one of these nut jobs comes at you with both barrels, tell them to stuff it.
When you are at your table with a fighter, a ranger, a thief, and a cleric, THAT is what matter.
You have players, and a DM. Time to get into the adventure.

So I guess democracy does qualify, but not in the way people use it.
And no, noone is pushing people into the arms nazis, or else, who pushed the nazis into the arms of nazis?
I know that Jews for example really really want everyone who dislikes them to be portrayed as being ensorcelled by Austrian painters, but they themselves have plenty of aspect that anyone with a fiber for goodness and humanity might find unsavory.
Circumcision, aka, well YT doesn't like it when the true nature of that procedure is written, and no, it's not "harmless" or you'd be able to cheer and go "Cut him again!" but that'd be antisemitic too.
The way they prepare livestock for meat processing. The fact that they celebrate the dying of the firstborn of Egypt, the deaths of Persians, the refusal to integrate into the Seleucid culture that hosted them and having their hosts completely merked instead.
The fact that some form of Abrahamism has displaced the folklore, religion and culture of over 75% of all ethnic groups !! in the world and then call others colonizers (even though they spreaded Abrahamism and wouldn't perhaps have even gone anywhere if it weren't a missionary faith)
      Etc.
Does that require an austrian painter? No.
But you do have a point by virtue of people disregarding this willfully, because they fear being ostracised etc if they don't oppose it (aka, me saying all of this is harmless in comparison to the risks you pile onto yourself by not combating me over it) THAT makes them look more appealing.

When the game of dungeons and dragons becomes a battleground because some stupid ass thinks that or or standings for Black people. That would make you a racist that you see or and you connected to a black person.. miniature set come out and most of the characters in it are women or minorities and almost none or white males. All people of all colors nationalities in both sexes are all equals. But when you destroy entertainment to push a narrative. When you feel the need to race or sex bend existing characters and properties then the racial problem is yours. And anyone that wants to stand on the side of the woke you’re a part of the problem. We need to talk to each other, We need to compromise with each other, even if we don't like each other. The whole reason these corporations are pushing wokeism is because it keeps us squabbling with each other and refusing to work with each other over our common interests (and we DO have common interests). Tell me, where do you go, when everything is controlled by wef and their backers?
Yes, WE control OUR gaming table. But by our very nature as GenZ, we don't force others to conform to our ideals.
This is how we lost a generation to governmental and corporate control. And is why wotc and paizo both push the racist idea that orcs are "coded" as black people.

6 minutes in, I agree with some of your points. I think maybe you misunderstand trans issues and I'd encourage you to maybe go beyond that a bit and maybe talk with some trans people about their experiences. The bathroom thing is an overblown media hype fest. Trans people have been using whatever bathroom they're comfortable with for decades at this point and this idea is typically used as a culture war cudgel to paint them as deplorable predators or other disgusting things and further deny them personhood. I used to not understand it myself, the ideas of gender being a separate social category from biological sex, or the ideas of what it "feels like" to be a man or a woman etc. And I wrote off actual demonstrable concerns that they face by virtue of their existence. Again, it's manufactured outrage focusing on hyper specific issues like which bathrooms they can and can't use, and that being said, just to add nuance to the discussion, I've seen trans men with huge giant beards and muscles, who look and act indistinguishably from cis men. There's no way you could plausibly say cis woman would be comfortable with the idea of sharing a bathroom space with that person just because they have a vagina.

If you had bothered to actually watch the video, rather than simply assume the content, I make it very clear that my objection is not to the woke agenda, which I consider to be, mostly, valid. My objection is to the behavior of the "woke" mob, which is not only unpersuasive but actually counterproductive to the agenda they are claiming they want to advance.

@grumpyoldgrognard9561 I did watch the video, and I mostly agree with you in principle. What I said stands. No one identifies themselves as "woke". It is ONLY used as a vague expression of disdain, and by people who literally cannot define it.

    • @EaterOfWorlds78
      @EaterOfWorlds78 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

@grumpyoldgrognard9561 "Woke" used to mean you were into psychedelics and jam bands. Later, it meant that you didn't automatically trust "official" narratives, but it didn't take long to evolve into more of a self-identifying term for conspiracy nutters who believed in lizard aliens and weather control satellites. So you now had hippies and nutjobs both calling themselves the same word and, despite some overlap, meaning 2 completely different things. Nowadays, it doesn't mean anything except that some right-winger with no capacity to form a tangible argument has decided to dismiss you, because of something you said or something they think you believe, without going through the trouble of engaging any brain cells.

      In one word: Bullshit.

Regarding de-platforming. The thing you’re missing is that before social media, people with very objectionable or uncivil opinions didn’t have a platform. So de-platforming is just trying to get us back to when certain communication was simply not allowed in media.

Ooof. Woke = Stupid? You can't define it further? You're seriously going to leave it there and then give affirmation to your viewers who agree without providing a list of actual things that are stupid? I didn't disagree with the title and was very excited to listen to a well-presented point of view, but certainly didn't find anything of substance here. It honestly sounded like you got triggered by a cultural movement that is leaving you and yours behind and needed to vent. Do me a favor, don't spare me your stupid. I would very much like to know what your definition of stupid is so we can move forward with what could have otherwise been an intelligent conversation.

If thinking maybe I have better things to do with my time than helping you figure out that putting people who look different than you into the meat grinder is wrong is being an asshole.
