Apple 'Sapphire' iPhone Lens - Whats it made of?

  • What is the Apple iPhone camera lens actually made of? Check out this incredibly in depth look into what elements make up the Apple iPhone camera lens. Why does the iPhone lens scratch at a level 6 on Mohs Scale of Hardness? Ill be using the Diamond selector tool, an XRF machine AND an electron microscope.
    Apple has been telling us that their camera lens is made from sapphire ever since the iPhone 5s. That is 5 different phones now that have this lens. (5s, SE, 6, 6s, and 7)
    Finding the elemental analysis of the iPhone camera lens was quite the adventure. A little outside of the normal repair and durability testing that we do here on this channel. But still a fun project.

      Jerry, as even Samsung has noticed, you are not measuring hardness of materials. In a measurement process you do not just hold an instrument in hand and apply random force to it; you should strictly apply only 1 kg force, and the material has to be supported. So what you did doing through this and previous videos is crushing through the thin unsupported lens cover, instead of scratching it. Hence the cracks of the lens, not scratches. In real life scenarios, for example, you put your smartphone on a table or in a pocket and some sand speckle happened to be there against camera's lens, Apple's sapphire layer should work as intended.

Both scans showed it was *over 90% sapphire!* Now obviously this was a joke, but it kinda just goes to show the vastness of the ignorance of people who shit on Apple. I, however, can shit on Samsung, for example, using facts - for example, the asymmetry of their newest phones and screen burn have driven me away, leading me to switch from a galaxy s8 to an iPhone 11 Pro.

My first grand piano didn't come from a school, but those were definitely some of the first places I went after Steinway. • @georgiivanov61
      @georgiivanov61 7 ปีที่แล้ว +103

      It is not "real sapphire, just impure". It is a normal glass with a super-thin impure Sapphire screen protector on it. That watch was real Sapphire glass with no excuses. Learn to listen properly.

    • @SwiftHDX
      @SwiftHDX 7 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      Georgi Ivanov Did you even watch the video? 90% of the lens was sapphire. If it was "just a coating" it would be like putting a 5mm thick screen protector on a 0.3mm glass.

    • @ipadhacks1
      @ipadhacks1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Georgi Ivanov If you would know where you are talking about you would understand that sapphire is very brittle, which increases the chance of breaking the lens when the phone is dropped (which doesn't happen with a Watch, and which is the reason that the Apple Watch is made from pure sapphire). To make a lens scratch resistant only a thin layer of sapphire would be needed to get a balance between breaking and scratching. This will hold up perfectly under normal conditions, where glass would have more problems. The reason that the layer comes of here is because more pressure is used than in a typical situation. The impurities in the sapphire are to make it more flexible and less brittle.

    Each day it passes there are tons of new videos on the Internet, and I (and I also presume as many others) wish that they were just as qualifying as your's! I bet that all the engineers and lovers of science expired an satisfying smile upon their faces as you went deep into an such complex analysis with a so correct and well explained conclusion. I thank you for the good quality material that you provide and also congratulate you for the amazing job you've done in this video and in many others.
    While I say goodbye I can only wish you keep up the good work, best regards my friend!

    Man, the length you've gone to find out what's going on! Great job!
    Most reviews just follow the trend. If a product is advertised to be something and the public perception is in agreement with the hype over that product, then almost all reviewers just repeat each other to conform to that belief that could be false. But that's what they think they should do to be popular and generate revenue.
    Great job +JerryRigEverything for going all the way.

    A quick laminate test: slowly heat the lens up to about 500 F.
    Any adhesive material that is carbon based is going to fail.
    Bubbling, loss of adhesion, burning of adhesive, funny smells are all signs of laminates failing.
    Glass and sapphire have very different coefficient of expansion, so it is possible the thin sapphire coating would fracture badly as well.
