It’s rare because most photo sharing platforms check the file for compatibility upon upload, and fix the issue by recompressing the file & changing these kinds of things. If the intention of the photographer is to distribute an image online for use as a computer based image, like wallpaper, there is zero reason to have a *.jpg file in any colorspace other than sRGB. Frankly, I can’t imagine why any JPEG image should be anything but sRGB or AdobeRGB.

Just a clarification between converting between color spaces and assigning color spaces. Assign will just declare to the image that an existing value now reflects the value in the new color space (the value will not change just have different meaning), while convert will change the value to reflect the correct one in the new color space (assuming it fits, or it will clip or compress). The difference is assign will shift the colors as in the video, while convert you will still the closest possible colors to the new color space.
That explanation is interesting but it leaves me with one question - If it cannot be displayed as a wallpaper due to Google's typically shoddy standard of coding, why can it be displayed at all? Surely simply trying to display the image would cause the process to crash and you would not be able to display it in order to grab a screenshot.

Pretty easy. Write a program to do the same math google's engine does on all the pixels in the image and output the coordinates of any over 256. The hard part is arriving at the theory that it may be a value over 255. Of course, if there are any logs or backtraces available (and there are on developer builds) they might have seen a debug log talking about a value out of range that comes with the exact line of source code where the error occurred.

That explanation is interesting but it leaves me with one question - If it cannot be displayed as a wallpaper due to Google's typically shoddy standard of coding, why can it be displayed at all? Surely simply trying to display the image would cause the process to crash and you would not be able to display it in order to grab a screenshot.

it really feels like there should be a failsafe where it removes the wallpaper back to default but I guess this problem never even crossed anyone's minds
yeah, most devs work on the principle of "dont fix it if t's not broken" i think (src: wikipedia follows this as well). so, yeah. that causes a lot of issues, subtle, but still issues.
Thats why windows should ask linux to add the failsafe on android os
I wonder if it would be difficult to load up a option that's says boot without wallpaper for this issue, unless they just fix the program to not allow 256 as a value
@@TheAussieBrickMan He said it at the end of the video. If Android 11 is gonna do it (or has done it already), safe to assume others will follow as well
@@TheAussieBrickMan Would you ever think about the importance of "booting without wallpaper", had you not have heard about this in the first place? The option isn't there, because the issue wasn't anticipated.. understandably 😆
