These judges are harsh! I've seen several countries' Masterchef, but these chefs are DEMANDING! FOR THE FIRST SEASON! But, maybe the flavors simply wasn't there. I can't taste through the screen, but the look of these dishes are a delight in plating, very far from some of the stuff I've seen elsewhere, where they truly are amateurs (they talked about refinement but they already had that, the dumplings guy had paperthin wrapping, that's refinement and clear skill! I simply cannot do that myself). These people clearly know what they're doing at least, even if they didn't wow the Micheline starred chef, who's on a whole different level...I guess. I’m from the US and our version of Masterchef is virtually unwatchable with how hyper dramatic it is. The tacky, Ice Capades-esque lighting, the soundtrack! The manipulative abuse of the judges, sometimes blatant, sometimes insidious is stomach-churning when contrasted with their praise. When a judge compliments a dish, it’s as if the contestant were touched by God Almighty. Not just tearing up, but sobbing, blood running from their eyes. The music swells as their family waiting backstage falls to their knees in beatitude. It’s actually very sick how the contestants are treated on camera by the judges, by each other. You’ll have Gordon Ramsey go to one cooking contestant and ask, “who do you think is the worst cook?” And they’ll name someone, saying something innocuous like, “I just think Jane has room for more growth.” And next shot, Ramsey is casually walking up to contestant Jane and says “Everyone here thinks you’re a failure. What do you think of that?” And you’ll see that person just wilt. It’s hideous. This version is actually about cooking with realistic highs and lows, actual criticism, not just poison, not horrible drama!! Love it!!
Couldn't agree more re MC USA, and MC Canada is the same. FFS why can't we just them cook and do the best that they can ? Yes the judges here can be a bit scary, but at least this show is about cooking and not about nasty nasty bullying.
Completely disagree- it is supposed to be entertaining as well as informative. I think that many people fail to realize that the contestants are in on the drama. The last thing that I'm thinking about when I watch MC USA is the drama between contestants; in contrast, I'm looking at their cooking skills and what new techniques they will learn. For me, it is all about the food and cooking skills. The contestants have been very friendly and respectful towards each other in the past few years too.
Completely agree. I think MasterChef Ireland is probably the only other one I can stand other than our UK version. The rest are insufferable to watch. Full of mawkishly salacious people and ridiculous drama. They actually make painful viewing!!
The judges make this show unbearable. Not an ounce of kindness, warmth or humility. I hate them with a passion yet I've absolutely no idea who they are. That Dylan McGrath has a very cruel face.
Does one suppose someone has told that judge, Mr. McGrath, that he has conjunctivitis (pink eye) in his left eye? It is really hard to watch this. (I did notice, in episode 3, however, that it was gone. Obviously he found out ;)
What's the deal with these presenters? You can't just be rich, you've got to have personality and passion. This is a piss take. Get some proper presenters.
I love Masterchef and was looking forward to seeing this Irish version. But a combination of dull editing, smarmy judges and huge volume of badly-chosen adverts - it's a definite 'no' from me, Cooking channel. Go away and come back with something watchable.
I couldn't agree more Helen. It's really quite atrocious. Neither judge has any charisma for TV and their faces are even unpleasant to look at. The majority of dishes were just plain awful and the editing of the show is sub par, with too much attention on those two smarmy gits instead of watching some of the food prep. First and last time to watch it I think.
