I realize that you have to be on your toes in the kitchen, but it's unfair to judge the one who has 8 orders to get out against someone who has only 3. In a restaurant kitchen that's when someone else jumps n to help.
I agree, they weren't experienced enough yet, also there was the risk of a dish not getting any orders at all. Should have been an invention test or catering.
I've never seen a Masterchef version put in that kind of pressure so early on, especially since the contestants were still struggling with basics! Insane program planning, that doesn't understand human psychology or the idea that these contestants are supposed to be allowed to grow during the program, in skill, technique, and palate. They could AT LEAST not bring in BLOGGERS, AND FOOD CRITICS. Just ordinary people for crying out loud! These people got nothing. Just a test on their weaknesses.

Yep. Definite mistakes and oops of non-trained cooks. You can do that at home, but not in a restaurant setting. (Though it happens there, too - we all know)

If this was a US Masterchef the four guys that didn't make the cut after the dinner segment would have been put in a pressure test cook off and the worst cook would have been sent home. The rest would be saved to compete again with the rest of the contestants. Way too many contestants are being sent home to early in the season. Just saying.
Mary, no, not again.---The dining challenge was confusing until I saw it in action. Wow, that was intense. Catching a glimpse of next challenge looks even more intense. I have a hard time watching conflict, so I might have to skip the next episode. I'll try it.
When these contestants finish with this competition, they are going to be really good. The folks that think these judges are too rough need to understand that being too soft gets you no where on life. Some of us love too much pampering.
March 24th 2021 comment after watching more of the series it appears that the appetizers are whatever they're doing in each group is they're doing their own personal idea of whatever that is supposed to be and not as a group and that's why a captain was not selected for each group. I still think that it would have been a better idea to tell them what to make as a group rather than having their own individual ideas because they may not work. This should have been stated somewhere in the introduction by the judges because it's totally confusing with the comments by the people in some of the beginning groups as to if they can do the dish or not so I am a little confused by this issue

I don't know about this thing with jellies in English-speaking nations, but that's not something I'd ever want to eat with random foods like that. It's unpopular on it's own. (I do have a need for sweet and savory though, so with a good steak on the bone, and a good mushroom sauce, sure, but don't make the jelly into a sauce alright! It's the contrast ingredient. I've seen some crazy stuff on variations on Masterchef, including the professional version. At the very least, I never want to see jelly any near any kind of seafood, ever!).
Of course, you can't cook a risotto like that! Cooking it beforehand, putting it on a tray to keep it warm! That's like baking a risotto?! I don't know, but that was weird! And I'd never chosen to do a risotto on order! Strategically unsound decision for sure.
Risottos are always done to order, in decent Italian restaurants. The client has to wait. There is a cheat, but that would be telling. It is certainly not keeping the cooked risotto hot.
March 24th 2021 comment I have experience in the food industry and the first mistake the judge is made in setting up this challenge is that they did not assign a captain for each section or asking the four people or five people that are in that section to have their own captain because no one will know what the other one is doing and that is a definite mistake that it's it's really obvious. That's what makes this unfair in terms of how it was presented and these judges should have used more experience and these judges should have looked at more of the master chef US episodes before doing this which I had thought they had but obviously they have not.

I don’t like the plating of the ‘rice’ element. Yes, I know it is not rice but can’t think of that element that mimics rice, at the moment. Put the rice in a round something then remove it and you have a round mound. That would be much prettier. Oh, that’s it…….risotto!
I was wondering if the guest comments were because they didn't have to pay for the dinner or they did. I would assume they did not because these were not chefs at the highest level. However I thought that some of the comments were awful by the guest because like when they talked about the desserts not being fancy enough I don't think they understood that these were home cooks in their first kitchen service and for them to be able to do what they did was extraordinarily difficult and you would not expect expertise of people coming from the master chef professionals competition. I thought that some other comments were rude and I hope that the judges will take into consideration that they didn't seem to tell their guests that these people were doing this for the first time and there was no room for any extra creativity etc etc. I don't think the judge just did this and they did a service to every person in the training staff because they are going to be judged on the comments of the guest. It's too bad these two judges didn't watch more master chef episodes because they are paid for their tutoring of people in these series and in the US I think the amount of money each guest judge was paid was around $150,000. And remember these people are not working for any wages. They are not staying overnight as in MasterChef US or Australia and when you're not compensated for your work right now the price even though the money sounds great I would have to say that that is not the long term ammunition to get these people going. Yes I would believe that every person entering is doing this because of the money and it's only several of the cook trainees really have a love of the art but again you know this is a series and I'm sure the two guest judges are getting some kind of a kick back from the network. All of these facts are not obviously being considered when the two judges are eliminating certain people although I know in the case of the woman who could not put her dish up because of her bad timing in the previous episode they did tell her they tested the food and were very complimentary but of course they don't want to get sued by anybody like MasterChef you has been or negative comments coming from a first competition.
This isn’t true. We had a huge rhubarb patch in the garden when I was a kid and on a sunny day we’d go in and get a cup of sugar, pick and wash some ripe rhubarb under the garden tap, then dunk it into the sugar and chomp away at it. It was crisp and fresh, tart and sweet, and delicious! It must have been pretty abundant back then ‘cause it was also served up as rhubarb crumble with custard at school lunch. I’d really love a bowl of that now :)) . Good memories of being a kid in the UK. Here in the USA I can barely find rhubarb in the shops, and when I do it’s usually limp and overpriced. I’ve not liked how it tasted when it was served up in restaurants either. Sad ..
We need diversity in these Masterchef series and I think this Irish version brings some new elements lacking in the others such as harsh but fair constructive criticism. These contestants are adults and should be able to handle this. If not then go home! The judges aren't pulling any punches which is just life!
Last time some contestant commented of how "he would be put down" by the judges, and now Mary is soaking in selfloathing just from not knowing how to do a serving - something completely new to her. It's depressing. This is just putting people down, not lifting them up.

It's a competition, not a therapy session. It's not about "lifting people up"; it's about finding out who's best. Competition is what makes us strong -- you should try it some time.

I don't want them to cuddle the contestants, just acknowledge them as human beings struggling to make their life dreams come true. Acknowledge their will to do better and help them do so. The 2 judges should be testing the food separately, because the chef is obviously the expert and the other guy is just an overrated maitre d...who mirrors everything he says....

The British MasterChef gives no financial rewards. However, it does give a career.

@Christopher, Yes, I saw that and was stunned! Chef Ramsey would never have let that go by in his Hell’s Kitchen broadcast. In fact he did his classic screaming fit when one of his cooks did the same thing. Yucky food from that cook, for sure.

Seems like they should focus on cooking food but not having a restaurant. IDK I think I like America's version of MasterChef where they have to show different skills for each challenge then have them do the restaurant.
