Back when I were a nipper in the mid sixties, and a member of the school CCF, *all* UK military rations (known as 'Compo' rations at that time) came in tins including the Cadburys chocolate bars, cigarettes and matches. Yup, every box of Compo rations had one tin containing cigarettes and a box of matches, considered essential to the well being of the British soldier at that time.
Being from the Czech Republic and Hamé being a local food manufacturer, I can't help but chuckle at the word combo of "liver paté" and "sophisticated", when I know I can buy that tin of paté for less than 50p.
To be honest it's one of those things you think is fancy as fuck at first if you have no real interest in buying it or eating it but then when you actually look for it in a supermarket you realize how cheap and inexpensive it is. It's just that when you hear things like "goose liver" it's hard not to assume "bougie".
I work with someone who did 6 weeks of Canadian Basic Military Qualification. He told me horror stories about the eggs. Every week, there was a different area of the barracks put into quarantine because the eggs would give a few people major intestinal problems. Like, it was that fucking bad. Don't eat the eggs.
Modern armies are very well fed, and generally have pretty good food! There's not really too much of the classic "disgusting" food to be found in these military rations :P

Usually they're vacuumed packed and already wet, just in case you don't have enough water. Although the tins are odd. British ones definitely don't have tins.
Jere Aho During my compulsory service we heated the cans right away on squad tent ovens. It was very convenient. Also they tasted decent cold as well. Eventually, since most had their own food with them as well, there were many leftover cans. Got heavy pretty fast. We just left ours in our Pasis. All the sweet stuff was eaten though. Really great MRE for morale.
Patrick Logan American MREs use heating bags though which, even though it needs to have extra bags just to do that, is still much lighter than tons of metal tins. Also American MREs are much, much more quality than this.
the porridge looked like it had powdered milk inside it which would make sense as it would be cheaper to fill it with water then to ship weekly supplies of milk to a place with most likely one fridge.
4:48 Liver Paste is really good. I'm surprised that some swedish products are in the Estonian rations. I have no idea what the swedish rations look like but i would think that it's all FELIX products!
And then you have this casual Englishman who eats on their knees and use their WW2 couch as dinner table criticising food from the rest of the world using a branch of Gordon Ramsey's language
Nah if it were Ramsey he'd been shouting: "THAT LOOKS LIKE THE DOGS DINNA!" and "ITS RAWWWWWWWWWWWWW!" and "______ YOU YOU ______ PIG! GET THE _______ OUT OF MY SIGHT!!!!"
Klotser Jr No, it's Hungarian name for the dish, consisting of meat and different sauces. At least half of Russian words are borrowed. Actually, I do not know what dish could be native for Russians that is not borrowed from other nations, like mongols, tatars and such. Except maybe for pancakes and vodka. They borrowed all the best from all countries, they invaded or united. But what can You expect - at the very beginning, actual native Russian territory was a tiny spec on eurasian map, check wikipedia. There is almost nothing really Russian, no matter how they wanted it to be.
The expedition breakfast (the muesli type of thing) is actually meant to be had with water. It already contains milk powder. By the way, having served in the Estonian army myself, it´s absolutely delicious! The saddest part though is that you can only get it in the military, it´s not sold anywhere :(
+ReplayRetro well we don't have much ppl in the military,i think that we just got the thing that women can join too this year....AND about the eurovision thing we won last in 2002 but we usually get a really good score its rare that we get a bad score
that moment when you eat 45 year old food and you're happy about food a year out of date. I love that ashens is so happy and NOT digusted in this video!
Funnily enough rations are really good, everybody thinks there crap, I went to a festival with my dad and we survived the weekend on rations he nicked from the army whilst he was still in. They always have pate and the we had some tins of pate, mushroom pate being one of my faves.
Hmmm... just rewatched it and realized that maybe the bag is so thick stiff plastic so that you can use it for other purposes like storing water or other stuff?
Actually the tins are coming out of most Western Military Rations, but in most former East European countries, they still use tins. Take for example the Russian IRPs (Individual Ration Packs, the Russian Version of MREs, well kind of :-)) They have a load of tins. When I was in the Kate, we had tins or the early MREs depending on who the Quarterbloke was and whether he liked you (If he liked you he provided tins.) I was in the Royal Artillery and served on several OPs (Observation posts) and we were provided with 24 Rations packs, some tinned, some Boil in the Bag MRE type stuff. BTW why don't you try reviewing the Russian Rations.
That thing with the meet and potatoes is pronounced G(as in goat)OOLASH, and it's actually pretty nice when you know how to prepare it. And the paprika thing is basically a paprica filled with meat, onions and rice that are pre-cooked, and then you put the whole thing in the oven. Again, quite pleasant, my grandma is cooking it for lunch tomorrow :) I love schooling people on food....
Weird Kid I think that it's food that exists most other places as well, but the spelling of it may have thrown him off. He also may not be familiar with that type, since the name seems to be used to describe various different kinds of food.
Garrette Many foods seem alike, but are prepared different in different countries. And the spelling... It was a language unknown to him, so how could he know? :'D
Amazing. Two traditional Hungarian foods in a single Estonian bag. You can't even buy gefüllte paprika in the stores in Tallinn, so I'm guessing that came from Germany rightaway. Pretty odd combination, right?
Imagine if you lived in a post-apolcalyptic Earth and you found a crate full of Estonian MRE's. It would be like winning the lottery or something.
+Levi Skardsen It would be great if you'd only eaten people for 6 months.
Not really. US and many EU nations do much better MREs, complete with "fire in a can" to warm it up and everything.
I'd still stick to freshly grilled game.
Why, though? Regular canned goods which have been produces for the mass market would be available in way larger quantities anyway.
I don't think skyrim would taste very good :)

Jere Aho mre is just one meal.
i'm assuming this is a whole day ration, hence the weight of 1.5kg (around 3 pounds)
Patrick Logan American MREs use heating bags though which, even though it needs to have extra bags just to do that, is still much lighter than tons of metal tins. Also American MREs are much, much more quality than this.
This stuff actually look quite good, it's better than what I bring to school, much better.
the porridge looked like it had powdered milk inside it which would make sense as it would be cheaper to fill it with water then to ship weekly supplies of milk to a place with most likely one fridge.
The one and only MRE video ashens ever did to my knowledge
"I imagine this will taste exactly as I am expecting." Because if it didn't, Spock would get very confused.
omg watching these ashens videos while hungry is making me crave the shittest canned foods
He needs to get that out on to a tray
Nice.
This is now a comfort video
4:48 Liver Paste is really good. I'm surprised that some swedish products are in the Estonian rations. I have no idea what the swedish rations look like but i would think that it's all FELIX products!
Estonia has Felix too. By which I mean made in Estonia.
Ashens! The world is still bricks, and we would like more "R-Ashens" reviews, please!
And then you have this casual Englishman who eats on their knees and use their WW2 couch as dinner table criticising food from the rest of the world using a branch of Gordon Ramsey's language
thats how its done
Nah if it were Ramsey he'd been shouting:
"THAT LOOKS LIKE THE DOGS DINNA!" and
"ITS RAWWWWWWWWWWWWW!" and
"______ YOU YOU ______ PIG! GET THE _______ OUT OF MY SIGHT!!!!"
It's RAW!!
A lot of people I know say "it's ru"
Casual? lol wtf
legit impressed with how much you liked this, specially being nearly a year out of date. wonder if it wouldve tasted even better in date.
You should try a Japanese MRE.
Diego Silva with raw fish and dry rice
TheNomadicGrammarNazi An essential part of every meal.
TheNomadicGrammarNazi With some bukake as a side
Gas Pankratus There is a food that does exist called bukkake udon.
Diego Silva but anyone can try ramen noodles
That paprika thing is supposed to be stuffed bell peppers, its something we in post soviet countries cook a lot. Its amazing when done properly)
Never saw it canned tho
Ayla Cheshir We actually do that here in the US a lot too, except instead of paprika we use chili powder.
Kaiser StratosTygo paprika is another name for bell pepper over here :)
"Resell prohibited" Ashens where did you get this from?
Black market
Donation from an Estonian military member who watches Ashens?
foxman105
Yea, might be.
The Cent Lord maybe he got it off the black market 😂😂
acrually its not prohibited. as long as you are selling it outside of estonia. xd
hey! THANKS ASHENS! Thank you SO much for recommending the estonian army! i live in estonia and this is very heartwarming!
GLORY TO ESTONIA!
No one cares.
+Brady Turner well said
+Brady Turner I CARE! ITS MY HOME COUNTRY HATER!
+Brady Turner Try finding vids about estonia -_- ye not easy eh?
GLORY TO ARTOTZKA!
estonians be like "whaaaaa ?"
Marin Srok While I am happy we get treated like this... I am also confused... So yes, you would be correct.
he doesn't know hat gulaš is but i know cuz im croatian and we share some words =)
I believe we borrowed that word from Russian. Don't quote me on that though, not that sure
Klotser Jr
No, it's Hungarian name for the dish, consisting of meat and different sauces.
Cool... I always was bad at history and languages...
The expedition breakfast (the muesli type of thing) is actually meant to be had with water. It already contains milk powder. By the way, having served in the Estonian army myself, it´s absolutely delicious! The saddest part though is that you can only get it in the military, it´s not sold anywhere :(
remember when ashens promises to do follow up videos, that are not loot crates
Seems like the Estonians know how to look after their military, lots of flavorsome good food in here while still providing everything you need
+Jake Roberts cause that is soooooo related to the military.
+Jake Roberts Once en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estonia_in_the_Eurovision_Song_Contest
+ReplayRetro the reason is because we have only about a milion people and we don't have that large of a military force
+ReplayRetro well we don't have much ppl in the military,i think that we just got the thing that women can join too this year....AND about the eurovision thing we won last in 2002 but we usually get a really good score its rare that we get a bad score
+Ashens you should start a Ration review channel and call it Rashens xD
Wish he'd been able to do more of these. 11 months later and I don't think we've had a follow-up.
7 years now
that moment when you eat 45 year old food and you're happy about food a year out of date. I love that ashens is so happy and NOT digusted in this video!
"Let's get this out on a tray."
"Nice."
when is more Rashens i come back here every year like pilgrimage
Funnily enough rations are really good, everybody thinks there crap, I went to a festival with my dad and we survived the weekend on rations he nicked from the army whilst he was still in. They always have pate and the we had some tins of pate, mushroom pate being one of my faves.
I could watch an entire comedy special on netflix with this guy
Judging how "š" is pronounced "sh", I presume "Guljašš" is a Goulash of some sort?
+Brandon Lee Yup, it's goulash with potatoes.
I mean, it's written on pack in English. Same with filled paprika.
Yeah, it's based off of the Hungarian word "gulyás".
It's 6 am, I have things to do, instead I'm watching a man eat Estonian military food. What am I doing with my life?
Kritzberg The right thing.
If you're really that concerned, get off your ass and do something then
"Google.. which.. MRE.. tastes.. the least... bad... right Estonia"
I'd eat it. I'd eat just about anything Ashens has put out on this channel.
I think you should be able to heat future rations if it came with a heating device. like one of those chemical heating pouches.
alright hes having too much fun, someone send him a chinese mre
Ashens. You're the archetypal favourite uncle.
you make scientific study absolutely funny when we play your vids in the background. TY
Hmmm... just rewatched it and realized that maybe the bag is so thick stiff plastic so that you can use it for other purposes like storing water or other stuff?
Yo, Stu! That tin is goulash
Estonian troops eat like fucking kings... Goulash, patê...
Goulash is fucking tasty as hell or i dont know if estonian goulash is the same as albanian goulash
Or the real Hungarian goulash which is absolutely heaven.
Tere tulemast eestisse.
Can't wait to be a fucking king next year.
+GrvR l Motion Designer I love Hungarian goulash so much... and I'm not even Hungarian. It's just really really popular in Poland. :)
"i'm going to be looking over them for the next weeks, months, years and millenia every so often" 7 years and i think this is the only one, lol
Someday, someone's going to come into your living room and see you eating canned filth over your couch.
Weird Kid I agree with you. I've had a few different versions of the food and none of them are alike.
Military rashens?
I see you...with your puns and stuff.
***** Get out.
KINGodfather I see you... with your ellipses and beard.
Fuck off.
Ive noticed that the crackers they use is what i call wasa bread and they are great with some sharp cheddar
I did not know that my country's army had such tasty food.
It’s tasty for the first time, I’m already sick of all of these ration packs, only thing I like about them are the sweets inside the 24h pack.
I think you'll find that most modern military ration packs are good for some time after the 'use by' date on the pack. Several years, in some cases.
Amazing. Two traditional Hungarian foods in a single Estonian bag. You can't even buy gefüllte paprika in the stores in Tallinn, so I'm guessing that came from Germany rightaway. Pretty odd combination, right?
*hand on heart* my country showing up in other countries' videos
so proud
