In America we consider jelly as made with just the juice of the fruit and jam made with the entire fruit and juice. We sell both here. Jelly is usually cheaper than jam.

To explain the jelly/jam/preserves thing in the U.S.
Jelly is made with strained fruit juices.
Jam contains the seeds and skins
Preserves are the whole or large chunks of fruit in a thick sugar syrup.
      Marmalade is marmalade.

. I've made jelly both ways:
      ❤ From the strained fruit's juice and granulated white sugar;
❤ From the fruit juice, little or no sugar, and liquid pectin.
It really depends on how much natural pectin is in the variety of fruit, or what the recipe recommends.
Besides fruit, I've made and canned Dandelion Jelly using dandelion blossoms. Delicious! It tastes like the honey our local beekeepers sell. 😊

Replaced the old RP4s (Ration Pack 4) Those contained a lot of single servings of tinned things of brands you would never see on a store shelf. As a Canadian I can tell you that Jam is cooked down fruit with sugar and pectin etc so it is more thick/chuncky as it has the whole fruit in it. Jelly is made from strained fruit juice, sugar and pectin so it is thinner and has no chucks etc in it....if feels like eating a thin jello spread. Jam and Jelly are just different things. Peanut butter and Jelly sandwiches started as a peanut butter and grape jelly recipe...but many people will do peanut butter and jam now instead and strawberry and raspberry are both popular jams to use....peanut butter and honey is also popular.

My favourite was always the breakfast one of Ham steak and pineapple, or they brought in in a meatball in herb sauce right before I left, it was pretty excellent too. They don't look like they have changed much since I was in, except they have gotten rid of that awful, dense hunk of chemical laden "bread" and brought in tortillas, which look infinitely better.

@@GrandHoff I’m English and am as patriotic as the next guy, but what are you basing your “they’re English” comment on? M&Ms were copied from the English Smarties in the 1930s but were copied BY Forrest Mars (an American) and were originally made in their factory in New Jersey, USA. Nowadays they’re made in Mars factories all over the world including two in the States. They were sold in the USA from 1941 but only came to the UK in the 1980s.
So they’re not English by virtue of being solely made in England (they’re not) or by being made by an English company (Mars is American, headquartered in Virginia, USA) or by being invented by an English person (they weren’t).

In the Canadian military, these particular rations are known as "IMPs" - Individual Meal Pack. The one in the video is from 2019. From experience, the tortillas are better than the hamburger bun (aka: Pain Burger). Typically we'd load the tortillas with the peanut butter and jam. The Canadian IMPs tend to be quite good for the most part - other nations like to trade stuff for ours when deployed.

When I was in the Cadets (Lanark and Renfrew 1st Air Defence Regiment, Royal Canadian Artilliery) around 2005 or so all the MREs came with a wrapped block of very dense bread, a bit bigger than a deck of cards, that was packaged with one of those little desiccant silica sachets, which really filled you up. I also remember going on a camping weekend in Algonquin Park where I ate 5 packages of Byng cherries in syrup out of the MREs and got sick as a dog. Good times...

Jams and Jelly's are two different things. Jelly is a fruit spread made with just the juice of the fruit, almost like a Jello. Jam is a fruit spread made with the entire fruit, or at least the majority of it, and thus can contain seeds and pulp.

Very very sweet does sound like Canadian food, lol. I don't think it's that we put a *lot* of sugar in things, but rather that we put *only* sugar into things, with nothing to cut through. I may have also heard something about most MREs in a number of countries having an oddly high amount of sugar, though I don't know if there's truth to that.

Wasaga Beach, Ontario, Canada, is home to the world's longest freshwater beach! It also happens to be where I live, lol. The beach and town are very popular tourist spots for many Ontarians and Qubecers. The shores with golden sand stretch on for 14km around Georgian Bay on the largest of the five Great Lakes, Huron. The warm shallow sandy bottomed shore waters are ideal for cooling off in the hot, humid summers.

Hey! my cousin was in the CAF and he smuggled a few of these for me to try over the years. Here in Canada they are not called MREs but instead IMP's (Individual meal pack) and you would be issued your FRH to heat it up seperate. they have quite a few flavours but be thankful you DIDNT get the poutine. its a soggy mess of bland fry's and un-candian cheese curds. Wholly not representative of true poutine. if the pack is made after 2020 you one of the newer IMP packs that have the resealable tops, along with being waterproof (the old IMP was just a cardboard paper bag). Its designed to not only give you a high calorie meal, but also give you some home comfort (hence the M&Ms and nescafe). you need to heat the PB a little bit to get it proper but then you roll it and the jam up with the tortillas to make a P&B wrap! perfect for when you are on the go! Always lovely to see other people try Canadian things!
