Magic the Gathering is an amazing game, and easily the most fun you could extract from compressed tree pulp and some nicely arranged ink. As we saw in my previous video, Magic the Gathering's Many Scandals, there are some hilarious and fascinating stories and dramas, or 'scandals', that pop up in Magic the Gathering from time to time. With a fanbase of this size, it really is inevetable that we'll have something like crackstyle, wherein Magic the Gathering player Sid Blair posed next to a few errant cracks at Grand Prix Richmond, before going viral on Reddit. Other Many Scandals include artist dramas, such as the controversial banned card Invoke Prejudice, or the art theft by Jason Felix on the Crux of Fate card, or the erasure of Chandra and Nissa's romantic relationship in the War of the Spark: Forsaken novel. Finally, the Player Riot of 1997 saw a number of Magic the Gathering professional players storm the stage and demand the final match be retaken, after player David Mills was disqualified for repeatedly breaking a minor rule.

10:46 The bannings had nothing to do with BLM protests. It was primarily to distract from growing outcry about discrimination in the WOTC workplace. There was a second wave of complaints after this since, aside from Invoke Prejudice being obscene, this started a debate on if it was right to ban cards for non-gameplay reasons without providing mechanically identical alternatives - a problem later encountered with mechanically unique Secret Lair cards.
They made some throwaway line at the end of the article about going through the rest of Magic's history to ban more culturally insensitive cards, then never said a word about it again once people forgot about their drama.

12:42 "since Jason's art has appeared in multiple sets"
This is because the art for upcoming sets is locked months in advance, and it wouldn't be logistically feasible to commission new art for those cards in such a short timeframe. The same thing happened with Terese Nielsen and Noah Bradley; their art was featured in several sets for months after they were both canceled, because many of the cards had already been produced or because the deadline for production was too close for them to secure another artist to remake the art and wait for said artist to send them a finished piece.

@@MastemaJack It's not netflix not allowing gay rapresentation, it's about appealing to the asian/russian market which actively blocks queer content. You want your product to be distrubuted in Russia and China? It better not have anything LGBTQ+ related.
Multiple huge companies (Riot games and Blizzard-Activision are the first two that pop min my mind) already went immense lenghts to censor their content to allow their products to reach out of the western bubble. Movies often get a different cut for those countries as well.
So yeah, the Netflix show is a pretty reasonable motive for ending the romance in such rushed and abrupt way. Just look at the way Arcane kinda wiggles around the idea of the two female leads being attracted to each other, but never states it directly. To my knowledge you dont need to declare the intent. Just tap your lands, which you can do at any moment whenever you wish, and then put the spell on the stack. That is when the opponent finds out what you are casting, and not before

Ironically the "pay first then play card" rule would not work with the cards that let other players help pay them. In order to play those cards first you HAVE to put the card down first, ask if anyone is going to help cast, then pay the remaining cost

When casting a card you can Either spend mana currently in your mana pool, OR play the card, then use mana abilities to put enough mana in the mana pool.
      These days, at least.
If nothing else, some card abilities allow for weird alternate costs that would require you doing the second version.
Also the second way can cause some weird interactions using cards like Selvala, Explorer Returned, since she produces a semi-random amount of Mana.

@@steelcladCompliant Part of casting your spell is tapping your mana, yes. But it happens AFTER you say "I'm casting this spell". According to the rules of the game:

      Total Cost
      Mana Abilities
      Pay
This is found in rule 601.2 in the official rules. Everyone on TH-cam shortcuts this by tapping, then casting, but the proper way is to announce the spell, then tap the mana. If you play Arena, you'll see the client do this very thing. Even on MTGO, when you cast your spell, before you determine what mana you use for it, you have to announce the spell you're casting, then pay the mana.

You can produce mana whenever you want. You can spend it afterwards, from your mana pool, OR produce the mana while casting.
The first is important for abilities that give Mana to someone else, or produce more than one Mana at once, potentially leaving you, or them, with mana to spend After you've cast a spell or used an ability.
My own Yurlok of Scorch Thrash commander deck kind of Relies entire upon this fact.
The second is important for cards with abilities like Join Forces, as you have to play the spell to allow other players to pump it, otherwise you'd have to just ask them nicely to fill their mana pool before you play the card.

There's a ton of minor scandals and silly moments that only entrenched players could really understand, but with your excellent explanation skills, you could probably make a part three work.
There's the secret Lair debacle, with limited print runs at insane prices, mechanically unique cards feature characters from other properties like The Walking Dead and Street Fighter. >$30 for four to five pieces of cardboard made a lot of people very angry.
There's the super desirable and powerful cards that were only printed as an incentive for buying a >$100 booster box, seen as a very greedy move. (True Name Nemesis)
The time they accidentally created a mechanic that was so overpowered it fundamentally changed the game and upset every single format, even the 25 year old ones with $30,000 cards, and WOTC had to emergency change the mechanic to work entirely differently to what is printed on the card. (Companion)
There's the time they printed a card that not only could do an infinite combo with itself, but if was played on an empty board would stall the game out and result in an immediate tie, and neither player could stop it - something possible as soon as turn four. (Hostage Taker)
There's the time the artist accidentally painted a vampire to look like she had a cartoonishly giant penis (Olivia Voldaren)
There's the time card art showing Garruk, an important main character, about to punch a woman was complained about because it had rape-vibes, and the blowback was strong enough that WOTC apologized and then pretended Garruk didn't exist for five years. (Triumph of Ferocity)
Finally, on a lighter note, there's the card that has rules text that demands an inanimate piece of cardboard make a decision in the game for you (floral spuzzum)

    • @gamingtilldawn6785
      @gamingtilldawn6785 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

It even shows how they weigh the value of outward appearances and marketability of the game and its story versus its quality and depth - one might be willing to sacrifice unique characters and situations for broader appeal.

From their magical connection on Zendikar to interactions they've had sprinkled in through Kaladesh and Amonkhet. The foundation for their relationship has been cultivated for years now, sidelining her attraction to Gids to pursue whatever she felt she needed from Nissa. The two of them arriving at a romantic relationship is not a sudden "queering" of the characters. It is one natural conclusion that the two could come to. The only sudden thing here was the abrupt and sloppy way that Weisman ended the relationship between them. A corporate order served with lackluster, ugly prose. I can't help but think that maybe you are the one that doesn't care about these characters and their stories, if you seem fit to ignore the near decade of development they've had since being a "racist elf" and "super straight" woman. I think the fact that you suggest Weisman is more true to these characters, when any story and character choices he's written feel like mere imitations of the characters known up til now, speaks volumes to how much you really care.

@@greywolf7577 I misread this at first and thought you meant retconning their relationship back to pre-WAR. They seem to be allowing Chandra to explore her sexuality again outside of decidedly brawny men in the Innistrad story with a possible attraction towards another female character. But outside of that, we don't know what they will decide to do. Their apology stated that she wouod love other characters regardless of gender, so perhaps that counts as that. While the whole situation is a shame, it's not even the break up itself that is really disappointing to me. It's the terrible, near unintelligible way it was written.

@@MrFozzilla I think if they do anything it will be just another cop out. Like the many times lesbian characters have been retconned to be straight but then due to backlack there now bi-sexual will flirt with other women but will always end up with a man.
Hey at least its some representation .
