While but a mere piece of cloth, flags hold in them the hopes and dreams of an entire nation. Symbolic of everything their country stands for, flags are both deeply nostalgic and unflinchingly patriotic, so when your flag is constantly being mistaken for your next door neighbor's, it makes sense that you might want to change it. It is for this reason that, in 2015, New Zealand attempted to change their flag for the low, low cost of $26,000,000. In this video, me and fellow kiwi Internet Historian set out to uncover what went down, what went wrong, and why we ended up with the result we did.

I'm actually related to Kyle, the guy who designed many of the finalist flags which made a lot of people upset, and in his defense I can tell you that he didn't design the flags for the referendum, rather he'd designed them years earlier for a different project, and when the referendum came around he basically just submitted them because he still had the designs lying around and figured he might as well. He had no control over the judges selecting his designs.
Also yeah, I 1000% would have unironically voted for Laser Kiwi I mean can you imagine the fear and respect that flag would bring? Just wild we missed that opportunity.
The fern is a bad element. Too fiddly. The Red Peak design was dope as fuck and fits all vexillology marks.

The flag referendum was the absolute worst time to be in design school, a whole semester of assignments revolved around it
Some random aerospace engineering student watching the design students having to design a flag for a semester straight and still complain.
It's like us and space X in environmental science classes. A whole year of environmental law, how the fact the project occurred anywhere near an Indian reservation and national parks was a legal issue, having to create multi-agency environmental policy documents, etc... it was ao repetitive when not just one professor but all of them decide that is what our semester project(s) will be about, and of course make sure none of them overlap because Turnitin would get mad.
You're very creative coming up with all this New Zealand deep lore. This will definitely help convince people that NZ is real.

Back when Norway designed its own new flag back in the 1800s, one of the requirements was that a child should be able to draw it. All those squiggly ferns would have been rough, I think.
All kiwi children are born with the ability to draw a silver fern, its a mutation that developed so kids could draw all their favourite sports players! Hope this helped!

I don't think being able to draw it is so important. I am from mexico and in the center of our flag there is an eagle eating a snake on top of a cactus. It takes great effort for anyone to accurately draw, not only children. But nobody cares, they try it anyways, they draw simplified versions of it however they can. And I really like my flag, it is badass and culturally significant.
I feel like that should be a requirement for all flags. Like as a kid I would draw a star then write "x50" next to it. Ive seen the Welsh flag drawn as the background colors then the word "DRAGON" in red. Japan's flag was always the best to draw

Also, the flags of several revolutionary socialist Soviet republics in the early 20th century were plain red (which for some reason is the color socialism etc.), including Bavaria, Bremen, Finland, Hungary, Lithuania, Belarus, Slovakia, and Ukraine among others.

If you grew up in Eastern Europe in the 90s and liked kiwi fruit, the NZ flag is the best flag. Picture this: You're a small child, the communism just ended and there's not much things to derive fun from, when suddenly the New Zealandic Board of Agriculture has the Chad idea to include several stickers with their national flag in every punnet of kiwi fruit. For the first time you feel God's Love, and your misery is turned into absolute joy as finally you have stickers you can ruin the furniture and appliances in your house with! And they were the olden day stickers too, with amazingly strong glue! Several things around me still proudly bear the Big Juicy flag, such as- the chandelier in the living room, that old electric kettle I'm too lazy to either fix or throw out, and, crucialy, my grandfather's gravestone.
I felt an overwhelming surge of New Zealand patriotism reading this comment and how well the stickers have persisted.

I was definitely one of the people at the time thinking this was just a vanity project for John Key. Although, as someone interested in design, I definitely thought the Red Peak design was the best of the proposals. Not only did it actually represent things important to New Zealand, but like Roman Mars talked about in the 99% Invisible podcast episode about flags, it met all the criteria for a good flag, especially the ability to easily replicate it. I remember a news article where kids were asked to draw the new flag proposals, and any kid that drew one with the silver fern struggled. Also, doesn’t the fucking red and blue fern one just look like a box of Weetbix?!
The struggle those young NZ test subjects faced has been the living nightmare of Canadian schoolchildren for 60 years. Oh yeah, you think, the maple leaf is 99% straight lines, it'll be easy to draw... IT'S NOT THAT FUCKING EASY TO DRAW, OKAY?!?

Was a Red Peaks supporter and was honestly disgusted with how it lost in the first round. It was the only one that genuinely looked like a flag and as you said represented the people, the creation, and a bit of the mythology of New Zealand.
Most of the long list flags were superficially representing NZ or doing it in the most indirect bland way (though I feel these still were better than the shortlist flags).
Something you should've mentioned as well was how the voting process provided favouritism to the "copy cat" flags. As we voted for a flag 1 through 5 and as the one you voted for got eliminated your number 2, 3, 4, etc votes would go to the next. This means voting for the photocopier's running out of ink flag was effectively doubling your vote for the flag if you didn't care about the colour. Tripling if the generic silver fern flag is also on your list. The Koru and Red Peaks flag don't have the luxury of having such a cushiony ability to stack votes.
Red Peak was by far the best candidate.

Funnily enough, every Maori person I spoke to around the time said the red peak had nothing Maori about it whatsoever.
If I remember correctly, it was basically more of a political power grab than anything truly symbolic. Politicians love using Maori stuff as propaganda to sell you on their shitty politics.

@@trolleymouse It definitely is purely Pākehā in design. Red peak is a bunch of triangles. We use triangles all the time in different forms of weaving. But not to represent Ranginui and Papatuānuku. Also, it does not make sense from a Māori perspective to have the female atua represented by a piercing arrow shape and the male atua represented by a notch shape.
I didn't hate the red peak design in general. I mean, it was the only one that didn't look like a tea towel from a souvenir store to be fair, but it was presumptuous of the designer to assume they had created something that carried that degree of significance, symbolism, and meaning for people from a different culture. To create a bicultural flag you need to be able to navigate the two cultures competently, which the red peak designer clearly cannot do, or at least could not do at the time of designing their flag.

I think you left out the most important thing about the flag debate: It was a longstanding tradition that politicians who got caught paying for their family vacation with government funds by saying "Shouldn't we talk about the flag?" that was finally getting called out in a shit-or-get-off-the-pot moment.

I'm Australian and I actually didn't even notice. To be fair though I didn't pay much attention in school.
Growing up in New Zealand, while 'beaten into our heads" would be a bit of an over statement, it was something that was taught here too. It's fairly rare for an Australian or New Zealander to mistake one for the other simply out of ignorance, there's usually other factors involved. Now, people from Other Places, on the other hand...

For classical tastes, the Coat-of-Arms-style "Suothers Cross inside the ferns" (7:51) would have been a pretty cool, safe bet.
For an exceptional expression of culture, history , and geography, "Red Peak" is absolutely brilliant.
For men and women of culture with a keen eye for the future, "Laser Kiwi" is the only true pick.
A 3-way race between these would have made for an amazing event.

I dunno, the current NZ flag is a very pleasing flag on the eyes. The people who confuse it with the Aussie flag are just too lazy to learn the difference
As an Australian I was very confused why the Australian flag kept showing up, thought you had a poorly paid editor off fiverr who didn't know the difference.

The Wehrmacht used the Reich war flag (Reichskriegsflagge), which was created by the German Empire and kept being used by the Weimar Republic and NSDAP Germany (when it was redesigned to be red and include the swastika). It was the "war flag" of the country, something that is almost entirely gone by now (a few countries still have one) but it was more common during the XIXth century.

Red peak I think is a good choice, but the southern cross does seem like a sweet motif to incorporate wish it could fit more seamlessly into the design
