  • Join Gary, Iain and special guest Linda, for a review and discussion of the 1980 classic spoof "Airplane"
An airplane crew takes seriously ill. Surely the only person capable of landing the plane is an ex-pilot afraid to fly. But don't call him Shirley.

    "How soon can we land?"
    "I can't tell."
"You can tell me, I'm a doctor."
    "No, I mean I don't know."
"Well, can you take a guess?"
    "Not for another two hours."
"You can't take a guess for another two hours?"
I love how they take and show things so literally. Like f.e. the truckload of lamps being dumped on the airstrip to give them some lights.

My favourite scene is the one where they are lining up to beat the women who's freaking out.

There was actually a mini-series aired on ABC in 1982 called "Police Squad", which had Leslie Nielsen as Lt. Frank Drebin which was painfully (and I mean that in a good way) ridiculous. It was pulled after six episodes because you ready for this? Because it had too many sight gags and one-liners. Duh! FYI: It is available on DVD and Blu Ray. Worth a watch. Cheers.

Two of my favorite scenes are when The Zucker Brothers show up in cameo in the beginning with the fork lift gag. "It's right over there, by the baggage loader" and when Robert Stacks character is at home, getting dressed to go to the airport and he steps out of the mirror instead of in front of the hapless driver. So subtle.

What a classic, probably never be another comedy quite like Airplane. As you guys said "even seeing it for the 10th time - it's still funny!" For me the absurd dialogue is what makes this flick so great.

No matter how many times you watch this it's still hysterical and you always notice something new. I think the outtakes would be even funnier.

Hilarious film, but I'd say the first spoof was 74's young frankenstein by mel brooks, either way, love that you did this one.

What I think makes this film work, unlike many modern spoofs is that you aren't required to have seen anything else to get the jokes. They're not simply references, they're funny all on their own. For example, Scary Movie is really only fun if you've seen Scream or I know what you did last Summer. Because it has few original jokes of its own and mostly references. You don't have to have seen any of the disaster films of the 70s to laugh at Airplane. It stands on it's own two feet, which makes it timeless. That's what a good spoof needs to do. Which is why Spaceballs, Blazing Saddles, Hotshots and Robin Hood; Men in Tights work and Disaster Movie, Epic Movie and Scary Movie 2 through whatever don't.

    • @jeanlafayette7152
      @jeanlafayette7152 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Another difference is that if you took out all the jokes from *Airplane!* you'd still have a functional movie - not a great one, but still a coherent narrative with character development for the leads. Pull the jokes from a lot of modern spoofs, and there's nothing of substance left.

Zucker,Zucker, and Abraham wrote a movie three years before "Airplane!" called "Kentucky Fried Movie"(1977). That movie was a spoof of Hollywood movies and was directed by John Landis who went on to direct "The Blues Brothers"(1980).and "Animal House" (1978).

Now I always thought they were taking off the TV movie 'Terror In The Sky' (1971). The cockpit and the lighting is identical, it even includes the line, 'We need to find someone who can not only fly the plane, but who didn't have fish for dinner.' Roddy McDowell said it who played the Nielsen character in this TV movie that was, believe it or not, trying to be serious.

Robert Stack was hilarious. Taking off his sunglasses with small ones underneath......
the guy in the Tower asks him "shouldn't we turn on the runway lights?" "No... that's just what they're expecting us to do." ... as if they're against them now. The scene where the airport employee picks him up. Just gold.

Gary, Iain and Linda. Beautiful British names. I really love the videos with Linda in. She has good insight and doesn’t interrupt during you 2 speaking. When you have had some other guests it’s been hard to get through, no offence to those people but I only like Gary and Iain or Gary, Iain and Linda videos. The Poseidon one is a great one 👍🤙

What makes these movies work so well is the fact that all the characters are dirt stupid but they're played by really intelligent people who portray them as being rather oblivious as opposed to being obtuse like Pauly Shore.

Maybe the first Spoof Whole Movie, but Kentucky Fried Movie, written and acted by the Zucker brothers, preceded it by several years with spoofed commercials, TV shows, and a perfect parody of Enter the Dragon movie. It's pretty politically incorrect by today's standards, and outdated 70's references, but when I originally saw it in the theaters I was rolling on the floor laughing. You can see the obvious influences it had on Airplane.

Great review! Want to review another great spoof film? Then check out Mel Brooks' High Anxiety (1977), which he directed and starred in that's a comedy spoof of 10 classic Alfred Hitchcock films. After watching it for the first time recently, it's become one of my favorite films.

The horse in bed scene was *not* about bestiality. It was a spoof on the movie The Godfather (1972) where a severed horse's head is left in the bed of a sleeping victim as a death threat. It is a use of ''gallows humour'' where suddenly bestiality seems laughable compared to this atrocity: th-cam.com/video/c2qCQ4inKjs/w-d-xo.html

Want to review another great parody film? Check out Robert Townsend's "Hollywood Shuffle", which satirizes the still prevalent issues of racial stereotypes of African Americans in the media. There's even a bit where Townsend's character Bobby Taylor and another do their own version of a "Siskel & Ebert" film review in a movie theatre, and one of the movies they 'review' is called "Attack of the Street Pimps".
