    I still tear up when Elizabeth is suffering at the hands of her mother. My mother was very horrible to us as well, so I sympathise with her.

    This film was integral to my childhood, and lead me to search out more Rik Mayall in my young adult years. now in my 30s...where would I be without Rik Mayall and Drop Dead Fred!? Also, who else thinks him having to be kissed at the end was just an excuse to get some from Phoebe Cates?

    • @SevenEllen
      @SevenEllen 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The kiss at the end was because Fred DID love Lissie, he was just saying goodbye. If you look earlier in the film where Fred asks Lissie what's so great about Charles and she says she loves him, Fred looks totally jealous.

    I'm glad they didn't decide to remake this. Because from what i've read, Brand's version would have been more horror-comedy than normal-comedy.

      NOBODY can replace Rik Mayall

    • @nathanforester5993
      @nathanforester5993 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ultimately a lot of his so called projects ended up in development hell along with Ghostbusters 3, Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian, Superman Lives, Batman Triumphant and the supposed remake of the Crow that's been going around for years. Another project Brand was supposed to be involved in - the movie adaptation of Rentaghost later got given to Ben Stiller instead, and i'm not quite sure what happened to Hauntrepreneur. Also remember the first time they tried to remake Rocky Horror?

      Hollywood need to start coming up with original scripts instead of remaking everything.

    • @volusize
      @volusize 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hollywood really need to invest in new writers because all I see these days are remakes. No one seems to have an original idea. Makes me sick. These people earning 6 figures for writing absolute schlock.

    As an American that has adored this movie since its release (I was 11), and went on to become a huge fan of actual British comedy, starting appropriately enough with MTV's airing of "The Young Ones", I think the gripe against us is just. I don't get why he wouldn't be loved here. It just doesn't work with Americans for some reason or another. Now, if someone can explain why XTC didn't make it big here, that would really be something.

    Drop Dead Fred is, for me personally when i was a kid, a film i didn't enjoy as much as i thought i would; now though, as an adult i look back on it with fond memories of a comedy great who i grew up watching and absolutely adore. I'm still not crazy about the film, but i'm glad it exists.

    There TOTALLY is enough material to see it as Fred is a projection of her Shadow leaking out after years of repression and all those bad things happening all at once over a lunch break is what caused this repressed aspect of herself to start leaking out. It's not until she frees herself from the trauma her mother did to her and LITERALLY freeing her inner child that she is able to become a better person who integrates the part of herself that Fred was that things fix themselves.
    The inciting incident is all the shit happening to her all at once. But the threshold is crossed when she re-opens the music box freeing the chaos within. The climax IS her freeing her inner child and integrating the lessons of her abusive past into herself that's the solid part the end.

    I always thought this was a awesome film ever since the first time I saw it... The only problem, I ever had with the film is because of another film I watched with the same actress in it. ( No, it's not Phoebe Cates) It's Ashley Peldon the child actor that plays a young Pheobe Cates. She was previously in a shocking true life story of Beth Thomas called "Child of Rage" (1992)

    Nice contrast to the Nostalgia Critic review (I spent the whole of that review thinking 'BUT YOU"RE MISSING THE POINT!!!'). I'm firmly with the Off the Shelf interpretation. But then I've been watching and loving Rik Mayall's comedy since I was little, and definitely lean towards comedy with a bit of a child-like spirit. (ps. I also love the burglary scene!!)

      ***** I don't find bland pseudo intellectual copy cat comedy funny more so when delivered by two of the unfunniest little bitches in Hollywood who think they can spew their half cocked political tripe at the same time as using the unfunny formula that comedians of modern Hollywood think will be funny say what you will about guys like Adam Sandler being formulaic but at least it's his own unique formula and he delivers his lines with emotion beyond hipster snark and flat unemotional delivery followed by prolonged awkward pauses as if to say you are supposed to laugh now as for Mr Tarantino I am not a fan of plagiarists who fundamentally don't understand the genre to which they are now humping with Django Unchained you have a mediocre action flick trying to pass itself off as a western (a genre built on little to no blood powerful acting quick wit and the lost art of thundering silent tension along with a morale compass that praises values that the modern media and progressives hate down to their core )and failing with such resounding stupidity it is actually sad as it doesn't understand what makes a good western combined with the fact the lead actor lacked the aura and power to be a lead in a western demonstrated when he has the cameo with Franco Nero and without even having to say a word Franco bloody well makes every actor in the movie chew the scenery in comparison

    • @michaelkeha
      @michaelkeha 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Compair Django Unchained to pretty much any real western it lacks the three core elements a witty sense of humor (no cussing doesn't make for good humor) the sparring use of blood only in service to the story and dramatic flair (unlike Django Unchained where everyone is a gore filled water balloon) powerful silent tension that is the core of the quickdraw fight(Django thinks more noise is always better than any kind of silence it's the audio equivalent of jingling your keys in front of the audiences face) and you do know some of his most famous movies are acts of profound plagiarism hell even his latest movie the Hateful Eight is The Thing set in the wild west think about that for a second.

    I was introduced to this film by a close friend of mine when I was about 9 years old. There was a lot about it I didn’t understand. All of those actors have to keep a straight face while Fred is pissing about and it’s wonderful. Then in my teens even though the reality was opisthotonos, I felt I could relate to Elizabeth. I was of course wrong because I was young and stupid and had no perspective. I to this day talk to myself as if I had an imaginary friend. Sometimes I have to look around and just state, “yes I was talking to myself” and move on. Also when his head gets squashed in the fridge, I almost died laughing. I would rewind and watch that sequence again and again and laugh till I cried. It looks ridiculous and totally hilarious.

    Drop Dead Fred is a flawed film but it has some truly grand moments of Rik Mayalls comedy, It Also has heart too, and it still cracks me up, but granted there are some downright awful scenes the Resturaunt scene with Fred ruining a lunch date was really uncalled for and the burglar scene i think was questionable too and the FX do look very bad even for their time, but other than that the movie isn't a total loss.

    The thing is I like Rik Mayall in The Young Ones, Bottom and Black Adder but I really didn't like this movie. I didn't like that it was American, I didn't like that it mixed cutesy with faux crude and that it just had Mayalls craziness but none of his hilarious unlikablity. I mean in Bottom and The Young Ones he had absolutely no redeeming qualities but in this movie there he is always trying to help her in a misguided way and deeply cares for her. Yeah that isn't funny. Think I'll re watch the Bottom series again.

    I have to admit I am somewhat disappointed with this review. I feel you fall in the same trap as many others when you talk about "the hate for this movie" or "people not getting it". Not everyone likes the same movies or has the same sense of humour. Take for instance Adam Sandler movies, you utterly dislike them, others will roll on the floor laughing.
    Some time ago I had a discussion on Prometheus. I thought it was bad, the other said "you just don't get it". After giving his explanation, I said "yes, I got all that and still think it's pretentious crap".
    I liked this movie and your review, but please, don't tell people that, for whatever reason, don't like it that they "don't get it".

    English have Dougas Adams, Monty Python, Ricky Gervais etc etc etc, and and you're gonna champion superficial comedy. I loved this movie as a kid but it doesn't hold up. It too adult for kid and too kiddish for adults.
