      Although what you're saying is a FACT, I'd say that 14:59 it's good on it's own I mean it's not as heavy as the previous two but if you consider the nostalgia and even some songs in the album are fairly descent, it's not that bad

      Nah. Hardly about money. Why does everyone think that? I suppose it's not understanding what it's like being in a band. It's very hard to TRY and write a good song. When you try to write something, it turns out to be shit in a can. You just write what's on your mind at whatever point you're at. It was more born out of frustration and chaos.. then fly happened.. as an accident.. I tell the whole story on my channel.

    While I agree that they had sold out, I for one enjoy some of their softer songs, I don't really see them as a Pop Band, I see them as Alternative mostly, their songs post 2000 were Pop no doubt about it, but the songs on 14:59 just had that Alternative feel like Every Morning and Someday. Mcgrath himself said they did sell out, but they also never really committed themselves to one genre of music, each of their albums are completely different for each other, but that's what I like about Sugar Ray, their really diversive and they just want to have fun.

    I think there are three kinds of Sugar Ray, and I like them all. Grunge, lounge, and pop. For example, this song, the cover of Abracadabra, and Fly. They each have their place, and all 3 are uniquely refined for their genre. Clearly they're capable musicians with their fingers on the pulse of popularity. Can you really blame them for wanting to be successful?

    • @alwaysfallingshort
      @alwaysfallingshort ปีที่แล้ว

      @jessica Are you offended by the word "pop?" Because uh... yeah, that's exactly what their sophomore albums were? The first sentence of their wikipedia entry refers to the song "Fly" as a "Pop-influenced" single. I haven't listened to their more recent albums, but I can bet hand over fist they didn't go back to being a grunge band.
      What a weird comment. Pop is not a 4 letter word.

    man this song used to get me so amped when I found it on the Escape From LA soundtrack. Esp at 1:52 the way it gets right back into the riff a little early with that "wooooooo!" over top. Honestly, hardly remember the Sugar Ray album this was on, but I remember getting Floored--yes, because of "fly" (guilty pleasure, but that song was catchy as hell, so I'm not ashamed and not going to apologize lol). Had NO CLUE I was getting a "start-to-finish-constantly-playing-in-the-background-for-the-next-few-months-of-my-life" cd. moral of the story, for ppl bagging them selling out with that song, at least it exposed their other side to ppl like me: a fan of heavier music (Other CD's I bought around this same time: Prong, Slayer, Korn, Helmet, Fear Factory and Sepultura), who can still appreciate a catchy ass song, no matter how "pussified" it is! No way I would have ever heard any of their songs with their original style if the radio didn't put them on my radar...

      @MurphyKargesBass 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Appreciate your take on it mkonich. For so many people it's easy to just say "Sellout" but it's often more nuanced than... "Let's try to write a song for money.." As I should know, because I wrote both 10 Seconds Down and Fly. (the music anyway) Cheers.

      Funny yeah that's what they used to call it. "Nu Metal" In Europe they'd call us "Sugar Ray - USA - Crossover" They'd call in Crossover in Europe if you played rock riffs and had a DJ

      @@MurphyKargesBass Hey man. Great work! Wasn't expecting to see you in the comments, very nice.
      To add to what you said-it's an interesting dynamic. I don't think back in the day an exact phrase was coined to describe this style of music. It was more just like, "Mainstream/MTV Metal." Haha.
      I've also heard terms like rapcore, fusion rock, rap metal, & mallcore. These were amongst the many others terms given to patent/label this sound.
      But I think with the evolution of internet-culture & everything, the definitive term for the genre has definitely become "Nu Metal" & I'm glad Sugar Ray was involved in help shaping said sound.
      You guys were super dope, I'm a big fan of Lemonade & Brownies - 14:59 eras of Sugar Ray.
