    When the album Floored was released, every song except for "Fly" sounded like this. Fly was just something they did as an experiment. Low and behold, it was their first hit and they changed their style to match Fly. One can wonder what would've happened had they become successful with the harder sound they first had.

      had they kept going in this direction i think their third album might have sounded similar to One Hot Minute by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

    ❤ Best song they played LIVE....
    @ The Rose In Pasadena...
    Mark came up to me and my bf decked in our mohawks and punk clothes and said "So.... How did i do?? 90s enough? Hahha man i miss seeing people (punks) like you. I was just like you guys. We need more punks at my shows." He said come visit more often at his shows.

Who knows, I don't know any of them personally so I do not know how they felt about either style of music. Some bands sell out in a different way when they refuse to change and keep making the same shit for years even though its palpable they are sick of their own shit.

    Back in March 1995 I was a teen coming home from school in time for lunch and this video was in heavy rotation for a solid two to three weeks. I fell in love with this band. Lemonade and Brownies is still the best album in my opinion. It's so diverse and refreshing to listen to, still to this day after almost 30 years.

  • @LDSBASS

    If they would release another album with songs like this, they would be back at the top of the heap so to speak. There aren't really alot of "big" bands out there that're pullin' off this kind of stuff. Their name alone would guarantee some degree of success. Not to mention all of the '90s kids that'd be goin' nuts for this. I know I would.

    • @Crunchatize_Me_Senpai

      I would love to hear them put something else like this out, but I don’t think it would put them back at the top of anything, today or 12 years ago, when you made this comment. This type of music hasn’t been popular since, like, 2003 at the latest. They’d have a better chance making a new album with their post-sellout sound. That type of music has made a comeback in recent years.

    This song was actually off their first album, 'Lemonade and Brownies'. Most of their music was more hard rock influenced at the time. They wrote Fly for the second album, and it really didn't fit with the rest of the music on the record, and they wrote it as a joke at first, but the producer David Kahne loved it so much he convinced the band to model the following albums off of it.

    • @claudegibson7650
      @claudegibson7650 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've heard that for the second album they actually wanted to do a sorta Metallica tribute to the fact that they wanted to originally call Kill em All, Metal Up Your Ass. they were gonna call it Shiny Solid Object Up Your Heiny Hole, and it was going to be all semi loosely based Metallica covers. Now I am not sure of the validity of that because I heard that a long long time ago but that would have been freaking hilarious and awesome.

    I've heard a number of different things about Sugar Ray - they sold out, they didn't actually like their sound before and wanted to change it, they organically decided to change their direction.... I don't know what the truth is, but I want to see the universe where this Sugar Ray got popular and stuck around. It is _criminal_ that the only time I heard this song before now was on a soundtrack for a Road Rash game.

      @@murphykarges7584 Wow, I did not know any of the band members had a TH-cam channel. I just checked out the Fly video, and I'm excited to look at more. I should also clarify, "old" and "new" Sugar Ray is good music, I like both, I just prefer the heavier sound in general, if that makes sense. I just feel like my comment could have come off as like, trashing the new sound, and a lot of metal/rock fans who like heavy stuff like to dunk on more pop-rock sounds. But I think both have merit.

    Heard this every time I played Road Rash 64. By the time that game came out, though, Sugar Ray had already changed into the band we know them as today.
    Sucks they abandoned their harder sound in favor of the lighter stuff, but after they experimented with "Fly" and it became a hit, I don't blame them for continuing in that direction. It was the late '90s: many artists and bands out there, and you had to stand out to get a piece of the pie.

    For better or worse, Sugar Ray really went through an identity change over their career.
    Certainly better for their wallets, though a few of us miss the moshable older material. Can't really blame them, though. It's tough out there for musicians, even successful ones.

    I love this song, still my fav from Sugar Ray. They managed to pull off the switch from hard rock/metal to pop and sound good both ways, so no one got mad and called them sellouts LOL but I always thought the lyrics were "My pappy said son, don't drive when you're drinking"
    but apparently the lyrics are ACTUALLY "My pappy said son you're gonna drive me to drinking"

    • @SyphusBatterus
      @SyphusBatterus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They were sellouts. Come on go from this to "Fly" that's not a natural progression, that's some record exec saying here's $1 million to go pop.

    • @atoz0to9999
      @atoz0to9999 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SyphusBatterus of course they sold out LOL I just said that no one cared about it back then. For me, I don't care WHY a band made the music, as long as it sounds good.
